RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is a recently described neuroinflammatory demyelinating disease. OBJECTIVE: To better understand the clinical spectrum, risk factors and outcomes in MOGAD. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study including all subjects harboring anti-MOG antibodies identified in major academic hospitals across the province of Quebec. RESULTS: We identified 45 MOGAD cases. The minimal estimated point-prevalence was 0.52/100 000 in Quebec. Median age at presentation was 32 years (range 1-71) with equal sex ratio. Most frequent ethnic groups were Caucasians and Asians. The most frequent clinical manifestations at onset were optic neuritis (ON), affecting 56% of adults, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), affecting 33% of children. First MRI was abnormal in 84% of cases. Most CSF samples showed pleocytosis without oligoclonal bands. Two brain biopsies revealed lipid-laden macrophages and reactive astrocytes. Despite steroids, only 38% had fully recovered at 4 weeks after onset. Half of pediatric and two thirds of adult-onset MOGAD subjects experienced relapses. At last follow-up, 69% showed residual deficits, which were moderate to severe in 17% of adults. CONCLUSION: MOGAD has heterogeneous disease course, and it is not a benign disease for a substantial proportion of adults. Best disease-modifying therapies remain to be determined.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Galaxolide (HHCB) is used for fragrance in many consumer products. The aim of the current study was to use objective assessments of HHCB to build a predictive model in order to estimate indoor-measured HHCB concentrations from questionnaire-based data on dwelling characteristics and occupants' habits and activities. METHODS: Environmental assessments of indoor HHCB, dwelling characteristics were carried out in 150 dwellings in Brittany (France). Among the various models that were tested, the best predictive model for the reduced set of characteristics was identified on the basis of the coefficient of determination (R2) criterion. RESULTS: Linear regression model showed among the best performances (R2 = 0.48), together with some more complex models. According to the estimated results, the main variables that significantly increased HHCB concentrations were: living in rural area, drying clothes inside dwellings, painted walls, chipboard furniture, double glazing, damaged floors and duration of bathroom door being kept open. Laminated floors and presence of indoor plants were found to significantly decrease HHCB concentrations. DISCUSSION: The linear model based on objective assessments and questionnaire-derived data about dwelling characteristics and occupants' activities constituted an easy method for predicting indoor air HHCB concentrations. For studies including a large number of dwellings, modeling of HHCB concentrations is cheaper than measuring it in every location. Our methodological procedure can be applied to other indoor air pollutants.

RESUMO

The flexed-arm hang (FAH) has been used to assess arm and shoulder girdle strength for 35 years despite little evidence to support its use. The purpose of this study was to determine what muscular fitness component, if any, was related to the FAH. The traditional overgrip chin-above-bar test and 5 different variations were compared with absolute strength (1 repetition maximum [1RM] lat pull down), relative strength (1RM.mass(-1)), and muscle endurance (repetitions to failure at 70% of the 1RM). Sixty college-age women volunteered for the study. Relationships were examined using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. No significant relationship was found between any of the FAH variations and absolute strength or muscle endurance; however, all FAH variations correlated significantly with relative strength (1RM.mass(-1)). The strongest relationship was with the undergrip FAH timed to 90 degrees of elbow extension (r = 0.72). Investigators concluded that the FAH is a test of weight-relative muscular strength and appears unrelated to absolute strength or muscle endurance.
