INTRODUCTION: Envenomation after a North American rattlesnake (Crotalus spp. and Sistrusus spp.) bite is associated with substantial morbidity. Arizona reports the highest number of rattlesnake envenomations annually in the United States. We evaluated the performance of poison and drug information centers for snakebite surveillance, compared with the hospital and emergency department discharge database. We used both datasets to improve the characterization of epidemiology, healthcare costs, and clinical effects of snakebite envenomations in Arizona. METHODS: We identified patients with a snakebite during 2017-2021 using Arizona hospital and emergency department discharge data and snakebite consults with two regional Arizona poison centers. Patients were matched using name and birthdate. The performance of poison center data for snakebite surveillance was evaluated using the percentage of snakebite patients in hospital and emergency department discharge data that consulted with poison centers. Patient demographics, healthcare characteristics, clinical effects, and context of snakebite events were described using both datasets. RESULTS: In total, 1,288 patients with a snakebite were identified using the Arizona hospital and emergency department discharge data, which resulted in 953 (74%) consultations with poison centers. The median age of patients was 48 years (IQR 28-62 years), and they were predominantly male (66%), White (90%), and non-Hispanic (84%). The median billed charges were US$ 84,880 (IQR US$ 13,286-US$ 168,043); the median duration of a healthcare stay was 34 h (IQR 13-48 h), and 29% of patients were transferred between healthcare facilities. Among 953 consulted poison center calls for a snakebite, a median of 14 vials of antivenom was administered per patient; 375 (60%) bites occurred near the home, and 345 (43%) patients were bitten on a lower extremity. One death was identified. DISCUSSION: Snakebites in Arizona can cause severe morbidity and require extensive healthcare resources for treatment. Poison centers are valuable for monitoring venomous snakebites in Arizona. CONCLUSIONS: Using hospital and emergency department discharge data with poison center records can improve public health surveillance data regarding snakebite epidemiology and human-snake interaction information and be used to tailor interventions to increase awareness of snake encounters and prevent snakebites.

BACKGROUND: The utilization of genomic information to improve health outcomes is progressively becoming more common in clinical practice. Nonetheless, disparities persist in accessing genetic services among ethnic minorities, individuals with low socioeconomic status, and other vulnerable populations. The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) at the Texas-Mexico border is predominantly Hispanic/Latino with a high poverty rate and very limited access to genetic services. Funded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, Project GIVE (Genetic Inclusion by Virtual Evaluation) was launched in 2022 to reduce the time to diagnosis and increase provider knowledge of genomics in this region, with the goal of improving pediatric health outcomes. We describe our experience of establishing a virtual pediatric genomic service in this region to expeditiously identify, recruit, and evaluate pediatric patients with undiagnosed diseases. METHODS: We have utilized an innovative electronic health record (EHR) agnostic virtual telehealth and educational platform called Consultagene to receive referrals from healthcare providers in the RGV. Using this portal, genetic services, including virtual evaluation and genome sequencing (GS), are being delivered to children with rare diseases. The study has also integrated effective methods to involve and educate community providers through in-person meetings and Continuing Professional Education (CPE) events. RESULTS: The recruitment efforts have proven highly successful with the utilization of Consultagene in this medically underserved region. The project's ongoing engagement efforts with local healthcare providers have resulted in progressively more referrals to the study over time, thus improving inclusion and access to genomic care in the RGV. Additionally, the curated CPE content has been well received by healthcare providers in the region. CONCLUSIONS: Project GIVE study has allowed advanced genetic evaluation and delivery of GS through the virtual Consultagene portal, effectively circumventing the recognized socioeconomic and logistical barriers to accessing genetic services within this border community.

Alveolar bone supports and anchors teeth. The parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) pathway plays a key role in alveolar bone biology. Salt inducible kinases (SIKs) are important downstream regulators of PTH/PTHrP signaling in the appendicular skeleton where SIK inhibition increases bone formation and trabecular bone mass. However, the function of these kinases in alveolar bone remains unknown. Here, we report a critical role for SIK2/SIK3 in alveolar bone development, homeostasis, and socket healing after tooth extraction. Inducible SIK2/SIK3 deletion led to dramatic alveolar bone defects without changes in tooth eruption. Ablating these kinases impairs alveolar bone formation due to disrupted osteoblast maturation, a finding associated with ectopic periostin expression by fibrous cells in regions of absent alveolar bone at steady state and following molar extraction. Distinct phenotypic consequences of SIK2/SIK3 deletion in appendicular versus craniofacial bones prompted us to identify a specific transcriptomic signature in alveolar versus long bone osteoblasts. Thus, SIK2/SIK3 deletion illuminates a key role for these kinases in alveolar bone biology and highlights the emerging concept that different osteoblast subsets utilize unique genetic programs. Summary statement: SIK2/SIK3 deletion in alveolar bone reduces bone formation and mass by impairing osteoblast maturation, unlike in long bones, where it increases bone formation and mass.

Recent advances in AI and intelligent vehicle technology hold the promise of revolutionizing mobility and transportation through advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Certain cognitive factors, such as impulsivity and inhibitory control have been shown to relate to risky driving behavior and on-road risk-taking. However, existing systems fail to leverage such factors in assistive driving technologies adequately. Varying the levels of these cognitive factors could influence the effectiveness and acceptance of ADAS interfaces. We demonstrate an approach for personalizing driver interaction via driver safety interfaces that are are triggered based on the inference of the driver's latent cognitive states from their driving behavior. To accomplish this, we adopt a data-driven approach and train a recurrent neural network to infer impulsivity and inhibitory control from recent driving behavior. The network is trained on a population of human drivers to infer impulsivity and inhibitory control from recent driving behavior. Using data collected from a high-fidelity vehicle motion simulator experiment, we demonstrate the ability to deduce these factors from driver behavior. We then use these inferred factors to determine instantly whether or not to engage a driver safety interface. This approach was evaluated using leave-one-out cross validation using actual human data. Our evaluations reveal that our personalized driver safety interface that captures the cognitive profile of the driver is more effective in influencing driver behavior in yellow light zones by reducing their inclination to run through them.

Osteocytes are embedded in lacunae and connected by canaliculi (lacuno-canalicular network, LCN). Bones from mice with X-linked hypophosphatemia (Hyp), which have impaired production of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25D) and hypophosphatemia, have abnormal LCN structure that is improved by treatment with 1,25D or an anti-FGF23 targeting antibody, supporting roles for 1,25D and phosphate in regulating LCN remodeling. Bones from mice lacking the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in osteocytes (Vdrf/f;Dmp1Cre+) and mice lacking the sodium phosphate transporter 2a (Npt2aKO), which have low serum phosphate with high serum 1,25D, have impaired LCN organization, demonstrating that osteocyte-specific actions of 1,25D and hypophosphatemia regulate LCN remodeling. In osteoclasts, nuclear factor of activated T cells cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1) is critical for stimulating bone resorption. Since osteocytes also resorb matrix, we hypothesize that NFATc1 plays a role in 1,25D and phosphate-mediated LCN remodeling. Consistent with this, 1,25D and phosphate suppress Nfatc1 mRNA expression in IDG-SW3 osteocytes, and knockdown of Nfatc1 expression in IDG-SW3 cells blocks 1,25D- and phosphate-mediated suppression of matrix resorption gene expression and 1,25D- and phosphate-mediated suppression of RANKL-induced acidification of the osteocyte microenvironment. To determine the role of NFATc1 in 1,25D- and phosphate-mediated LCN remodeling in vivo, histomorphometric analyses of tibiae from mice lacking osteocyte-specific Nfatc1 in Vdrf/f;Dmp1Cre+ and Npt2aKO mice were performed, demonstrating that bones from these mice have decreased lacunar size and expression of matrix resorption genes, and improved canalicular structure compared to Vdrf/f;Dmp1Cre+ and Npt2aKO control. This study demonstrates that NFATc1 is necessary for 1,25D- and phosphate-mediated regulation of LCN remodeling.

Background And Objective: Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) has no FDA approved treatment. Serotonin-2c (5HT2c) agonists have preclinical and human laboratory evidence for potential efficacy for CUD. We assessed the tolerability and effects of lorcaserin (5HT2c agonist) on CUD. Methods: In a 10-week, open label, uncontrolled trial, the tolerability of lorcaserin was tested in outpatients with CUD. Adverse events (AE) were assessed weekly. Cannabis use was assessed twice weekly by the Timeline follow-back and quantitative urine metabolites. Results: 17 participants enrolled, and 14 received medication. Participants' average age was 35 years; majority were male (N=12). The medication was well tolerated in males. There were no serious adverse events (SAE). The most common AE's were headache/migraine (N=4, all females), anorexia (N=3), and irritability (N=2). Participants decreased their frequency of cannabis use significantly (p < 0.001), adjusted for baseline use. By the end of the trial, participants decreased by 1.76 (SE=0.47) cannabis using days/week. Average daily amount of cannabis and urine THC metabolite levels did not change significantly. Conclusions: Lorcaserin was well tolerated in males but not females suggesting possible sex differences. Future trials of other 5HT2c agonists (lorcaserin was withdrawn at the request of the FDA) should consider longer dose titration phases. Trial Registration: NCT02932215.

Introduction: Mesoamerican nephropathy (MeN) is a chronic kidney disease (CKD) which may be caused by recurrent acute kidney injury (AKI). We investigated urinary quinolinate-to-tryptophan ratio (Q/T), a validated marker of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) biosynthesis that is elevated during ischemic and inflammatory AKI, in a sugarcane worker population in Nicaragua with high rates of MeN. Methods: Among 693 male sugarcane workers studied, we identified 45 who developed AKI during the harvest season. We matched them 1:1 based on age and job category with 2 comparison groups: (i) "no kidney injury," active sugarcane workers with serum creatinine (sCr) <1.1 mg/dl; and (ii) "CKD," individuals no longer working in sugarcane due to their CKD, who had additional 1:1 matching for sCr. We measured urine metabolites using liquid chromatography coupled tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and compared Q/T and other metabolic features between the AKI and comparison groups. Results: Urine Q/T was significantly higher in workers with AKI than in those with no kidney injury (median interquartile Range [IQR]: 0.104 [0.074-0.167] vs. 0.060 [0.045-0.091], P < 0.0001) and marginally higher than in workers with CKD (0.086 [0.063-0.142], P = 0.059). Urine levels of the NAD+ precursor nicotinamide were lower in the AKI group than in comparison groups. Conclusion: Workers at risk for MeN who develop AKI demonstrate features of impaired NAD+ biosynthesis, thereby providing new insights into the metabolic mechanisms of injury in this population. Therapeutic use of oral nicotinamide, which may ameliorate NAD+ biosynthetic derangement and fortify against kidney injury, should be investigated to prevent AKI in this setting.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if treatment of co-occurring adult ADHD and Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) with extended-release mixed amphetamine salts (MAS-ER) would be effective at improving ADHD symptoms and promoting abstinence. METHOD: A 12-week randomized, double-blind, two-arm pilot feasibility trial of adults with comorbid ADHD and CUD (n = 28) comparing MAS-ER (80 mg) to placebo. Main outcomes: ADHD: ≥30% symptom reduction, measured by the Adult ADHD Investigator Symptom Rating Scale (AISRS). CUD: Abstinence during last 2 observed weeks of maintenance phase. RESULTS: Overall, medication was well-tolerated. There was no significant difference in ADHD symptom reduction (MAS-ER: 83.3%; placebo: 71.4%; p = .65) or cannabis abstinence (MAS-ER: 15.4%; placebo: 0%; p = .27). MAS-ER group showed a significant decrease in weekly cannabis use days over time compared to placebo (p < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: MAS-ER was generally well-tolerated. The small sample size precluded a determination of MAS-ER's superiority reducing ADHD symptoms or promoting abstinence. Notably, MAS-ER significantly reduced weekly days of use over time.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and osteoporosis often coexist in the elderly. Although observational studies suggest an association between these two diseases, the pathophysiologic link between AD and skeletal health has been poorly defined. We examined the skeletal phenotype of 5xFAD mice, an AD model with accelerated neuron-specific amyloid-ß accumulation causing full-blown AD phenotype by the age of 8 months. Micro-computed tomography indicated significantly lower trabecular and cortical bone parameters in 8-month-old male, but not female, 5xFAD mice than sex-matched wild-type littermates. Dynamic histomorphometry revealed reduced bone formation and increased bone resorption, and quantitative RT-PCR showed elevated skeletal RANKL gene expression in 5xFAD males. These mice also had diminished body fat percentage with unaltered lean mass, as determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and elevated Ucp1 mRNA levels in brown adipose tissue, consistent with increased sympathetic tone, which may contribute to the osteopenia observed in 5xFAD males. Nevertheless, no significant changes could be detected between male 5xFAD and wild-type littermates regarding the serum and skeletal concentrations of norepinephrine. Thus, brain-specific amyloid-ß pathology is associated with osteopenia and appears to affect both bone formation and bone resorption. Our findings shed new light on the pathophysiologic link between Alzheimer's disease and osteoporosis.

ABSTRACT: Lysyl oxidase (LOX) is a facilitator of extracellular matrix cross-linking. Using newly developed megakaryocyte-specific LOX knockout mice, we show that LOX expressed in these scarce bone marrow cells affects bone volume and collagen architecture in a sex-dependent manner.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) disease activity can be caused by treatment non-adherence. Medication possession ratio (MPR) is an established metric of medication adherence. A higher MPR correlates with better outcomes in several chronic diseases, but MPR has not been investigated with respect to EoE. A retrospective cohort study was performed using an established EoE registry for the years 2005 to 2020. Treatment periods were identified, MPRs were calculated, and medical records were assessed for histologic remission (<15 eos/hpf), dysphagia, food impaction, stricture occurrence, and esophageal dilation that corresponded to each treatment period. In total, 275 treatment periods were included for analysis. The MPR in the histologic remission treatment period group was 0.91 (IQR 0.63-1) vs. 0.63 (IQR 0.31-0.95) for the non-remission treatment period group (p < 0.001). The optimal MPR cut-point for histologic remission was 0.7 (Sen 0.66, Spec 0.62, AUC 0.63). With MPRs ≥ 0.7, there were significantly increased odds of histologic remission (odds ratio 3.05, 95% confidence interval 1.79-5.30) and significantly decreased odds of dysphagia (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.15-0.45), food impaction (OR 0.26, 95% CI 0.11-0.55), stricture occurrence (OR 0.52 95% CI 0.29-0.92), and esophageal dilation (OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.15-0.54). Assessing MPR before repeating an esophagogastroduodenoscopy may decrease unnecessary procedures in the clinical management of eosinophilic esophagitis.

Biallelic pathogenic variants in MAP3K20, which encodes a mitogen-activated protein kinase, are a rare cause of split-hand foot malformation (SHFM), hearing loss, and nail abnormalities or congenital myopathy. However, heterozygous variants in this gene have not been definitively associated with a phenotype. Here, we describe the phenotypic spectrum associated with heterozygous de novo variants in the linker region between the kinase domain and leucine zipper domain of MAP3K20. We report five individuals with diverse clinical features, including craniosynostosis, limb anomalies, sensorineural hearing loss, and ectodermal dysplasia-like phenotypes who have heterozygous de novo variants in this specific region of the gene. These individuals exhibit both shared and unique clinical manifestations, highlighting the complexity and variability of the disorder. We propose that the involvement of MAP3K20 in endothelial-mesenchymal transition provides a plausible etiology of these features. Together, these findings characterize a disorder that both expands the phenotypic spectrum associated with MAP3K20 and highlights the need for further studies on its role in early human development.

PURPOSE: Chest radiographs in critically ill patients can be difficult to interpret due to technical and clinical factors. We sought to determine the agreement of chest radiographs and CT scans, and the inter-observer variation of chest radiograph interpretation, in intensive care units (ICUs). METHODS: Chest radiographs and corresponding thoracic computerised tomography (CT) scans (as reference standard) were collected from 45 ICU patients. All radiographs were analysed by 20 doctors (radiology consultants, radiology trainees, ICU consultants, ICU trainees) from 4 different centres, blinded to CT results. Specificity/sensitivity were determined for pleural effusion, lobar collapse and consolidation/atelectasis. Separately, Fleiss' kappa for multiple raters was used to determine inter-observer variation for chest radiographs. RESULTS: The median sensitivity and specificity of chest radiographs for detecting abnormalities seen on CTs scans were 43.2% and 85.9% respectively. Diagnostic sensitivity for pleural effusion was significantly higher among radiology consultants but no specialty/experience distinctions were observed for specificity. Median inter-observer kappa coefficient among assessors was 0.295 ("fair"). CONCLUSIONS: Chest radiographs commonly miss important radiological features in critically ill patients. Inter-observer agreement in chest radiograph interpretation is only "fair". Consultant radiologists are least likely to miss thoracic radiological abnormalities. The consequences of misdiagnosis by chest radiographs remain to be determined.

Psychosocial interventions remain the primary strategy for addressing cocaine use disorder (CUD), although many individuals do not benefit from these approaches. Amphetamine-based interventions have shown significant promise and may improve outcomes among individuals continuing to use cocaine in the context of behavioral interventions. One hundred forty-five adults (122 males) who used cocaine a minimum of 4 days in the prior month and met the criteria for a CUD enrolled in a two-stage intervention. All participants received a computer-delivered skills intervention and contingency management for reinforcing abstinence for a 1-month period. Participants demonstrating less than 3 weeks of abstinence in the first month were randomized to receive mixed amphetamine salts-extended release (MAS-ER) or placebo (80 mg/day) for 10 weeks under double-blind conditions. All participants continued with the behavioral intervention. The primary outcome was the proportion of individuals who achieved 3 consecutive weeks of abstinence as measured by urine toxicology confirmed self-report at the study end. The proportion of participants demonstrating 3 consecutive weeks of abstinence at study end did not differ between the medication groups: MAS-ER = 15.6% (7/45) and placebo = 12.2% (5/41). Participants who received MAS-ER reported greater reductions in the magnitude of wanting cocaine, although no group differences were noted in either the perceived improvement or the frequency of wanting cocaine. Retention rates were greater for both medication groups compared to behavioral responders. Overall, augmenting a behavioral intervention with MAS-ER did not significantly increase the abstinence rate among individuals continuing to use cocaine following a month of behavioral therapy alone. Genetic research presents numerous ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI), particularly when the research involves collaborations between investigators in high and low-income countries. Some ELSI issues are universal, and others are specific to context and culture. This study investigates perceptions of genetic research in Nicaragua, Central America, where local and U.S. based researchers have collaborated for over a decade. A total of 43 residents from northwestern Nicaragua, a region with high mortality rates attributed to chronic kidney disease of non-traditional causes (CKDnt), were interviewed, including research participants in ongoing studies (n = 36), health professionals (n = 3), labor leaders (n = 2), and family members of research participants (n = 2). Questions focused on informed consent, data-sharing, and post-study expectations. Audio recordings of interviews conducted in Spanish were transcribed and translated into English. English transcripts were coded and analyzed using NVivo 12 software. The lack of familiarity with terms in the consent form presented a barrier to participant comprehension of key elements of the genetic research study, raising concerns about the validity of informed consent. Research participants often viewed their participation as access to health care. Health professionals emphasized the importance of long-term partnerships between foreign-based researchers and local health institutions. Leaders and family members recommended that they be informed of research studies and allowed the opportunity to consent, as they felt the benefits and risks of research also apply to them. Our findings identified genetic research practices to be improved upon in order to be more responsive to the contextual realities of collaborators living in low-resource settings.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity prevalence in Military Health System (MHS) children has been reported through fiscal year (FY) 2012 as consistently lower than in the general population. Our study reports military pediatric overweight, obesity, and severe obesity prevalence through FY2018. We compared FY2018 prevalence to a sample of the general population using National Health and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MHS Data Repository was queried for all children aged 2-17 years seen at any military treatment facility between FY2012 and FY2018. We calculated overweight and obesity (classes 1, 2, and 3) prevalence for each FY and performed subgroup analysis for sex, age, and sponsor rank. We also compared FY2018 to NHANES 2017-2018 data. This study was approved by the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Institutional Review Board. RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight and obesity was stable from FY2012 (14.4% and 11.3%, respectively) to FY2018 (14.1% and 10.7%). Rates of classes 2 and 3 obesity combined were also stable at around 2.5% of all children. In FY2018, obesity prevalence was greater in assigned males, increased with age, and was highest in 16-17-year-olds (odds ratio: 2.75) and children with an enlisted military sponsor (odds ratio: 1.78). Compared to NHANES, MHS children had lower rates of obesity (10.7% versus 19.3%) with a smaller proportion of severe obesity (24% versus 32%). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of pediatric overweight and obesity in the MHS was stable over time. Disparities were observed between age and sponsor rank groups. When compared to the general population, overall obesity prevalence was lower in younger military children. Further research is needed to explore disparities and to identify optimal strategies to mitigate the increase in obesity prevalence with age.

Background: Opioid use disorder (OUD) continues to be major public health problem in the US and innovative medication strategies are needed. The extended-release injectable formulation of naltrexone (ER-NTX), an opioid receptor antagonist, is an effective treatment for OUD, but the need for an opioid-free period during the induction phase of treatment is a barrier to treatment success, particularly in the outpatient setting. Lofexidine, an alpha-2-adrenergic agonist, is an effective treatment for opioid withdrawal.Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility, safety, and tolerability of lofexidine for facilitating induction onto ER-NTX in the management of OUD.Methods: In an open-label, uncontrolled, 10-week outpatient clinical trial, 20 adults (four women) with OUD were treated with a fixed-flexible dosing strategy (maximum 0.54 mg 4×/daily) of lofexidine for up to 10 days to manage opioid withdrawal prior to receiving ER-NTX. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a modification of the study methods after enrolling 10 participants who attended all visits in person. The second group of 10 participants attended most induction period visits remotely.Results: Overall, 10 of the 20 participants (50%) achieved the primary outcome by receiving the first ER-NTX injection. Rates of induction success did not differ by the presence of fentanyl or remote visit attendance, although the small sample size provided limited statistical power. Six out of 20 participants (30%) initiated on lofexidine required dose adjustments. There were no study-related serious adverse events.Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence supporting the feasibility of inducting individuals with OUD onto ER-NTX using lofexidine.

Osteocytes express parathyroid hormone (PTH)/PTH-related protein (PTHrP) receptors and respond to the PTHrP analog abaloparatide (ABL) and to the PTH 1-34 fragment teriparatide (TPTD), which are used to treat osteoporosis. Several studies indicate overlapping but distinct skeletal responses to ABL or TPTD, but their effects on cortical bone may differ. Little is known about their differential effects on osteocytes. We compared cortical osteocyte and skeletal responses to ABL and TPTD in sham-operated and ovariectomized mice. Administered 7 weeks after ovariectomy for 4 weeks at a dose of 40 µg/kg/d, TPTD and ABL had similar effects on trabecular bone, but ABL showed stronger effects in cortical bone. In cortical osteocytes, both treatments decreased lacunar area, reflecting altered peri-lacunar remodeling favoring matrix accumulation. Osteocyte RNA-Seq revealed that several genes and pathways were altered by ovariectomy and affected similarly by TPTD and ABL. Notwithstanding, several signaling pathways were uniquely regulated by ABL. Thus, in mice, TPTD and ABL induced a positive osteocyte peri-lacunar remodeling balance, but ABL induced stronger cortical responses and affected the osteocyte transcriptome differently. We concluded that ABL affected the cortical osteocyte transcriptome in a manner subtly different from TPTD, resulting in more beneficial remodeling/modeling changes and homeostasis of the cortex.

Telling that one object or moment is different from another one is fundamental to cognition and intelligent behavior. Most investigations examining same/different (S/D) concepts in animals have relied on testing static visual stimuli. To move beyond this limitation, we investigated how five pigeons learned and performed a motion S/D discrimination. Using a go/no-go task, dynamic motion fields built from dot elements were presented in sequence to display repeating (same) or changing (different) motions. Each trial consisted of 10 motion segments presented in succession using the direction and rate of dot movement in the motion field to exemplify the S/D relations. The pigeons learned this motion S/D discrimination. We further tested their performance by varying the number and persistence of the dots in the motion fields. The results indicated the pigeons likely extracted globally integrated perceptual summaries of the motions for comparison across the segments. Testing differing organizations of the S/D relations across segments indicated that this discrimination could be determined from as few as two segments and involved an updating comparison of at least four or more segments of the sequence during their presentation. Collectively, the experiments establish for the first time that pigeons can use motion features to classify sequential same and different experiences.
