RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: the article discusses the effect of the complex of active mineral additives consisting of silica and fly ash, and a fine aggregate, including finely ground natural-white quartz sand for partial replacement of river sand, on the mechanical properties of high-strength concrete containing steel fiber. MATERIALS AND METHODS: high-strength concrete containing Dramix®3D 65/35 steel fiber in the amount of 100 kg per 1 m3 of concrete mixture was suggested where 22% to 100% of river sand was replaced by finely ground white natural sand of the particle size of 5 to 1800 µm and containing the complex of active mineral additives for partial replacement of cement as part of a multicomponent binder, consisting of low-calcium fly ash of thermal power plants and silica and containing, respectively, 20, 30, 40% fly ash and from 5 to 15% silica by weight of the binder. RESULTS: research results have shown that 100% replacement of river sand with finely ground natural white sand, in concrete containing 20% of the mass as part of a multicomponent binder, fly ash and from 5 to 15% by weight of silica, contributes to the increase of its strength properties: the values of concrete compressive strength after 28 days were in the range from 118.5 to 128 MPa, tensile strength during bending and splitting, respectively, from 18.8 to 25.4 MPa and from 10.2 to 11.9 MPa, which is higher than the strength of concrete samples containing river sand. CONCLUSIONS: the achieved results have demonstrated the efficiency of using finely ground natural white sand as an alternative to river sand for producing high-strength concrete, thus helping to save the river sand resources in Vietnam. The use of fly ash and micro silicon, which are power and metallurgy wastes, as part of a multicomponent binder in order to partially replace cement reduces the carbon footprint in the production of binders and will also have a beneficial effect on environmental protection against industrial waste pollution.

RESUMO

Phthalonitrile resins (PN) are known for their incredible heat resistance and at the same time poor processability. Common curing cycle of the PN includes dozens hours of heating at temperatures up to 375 °C. This work was aimed at reducing processing time of phthalonitrile resin, and with this purpose, a novolac oligomer with hydroxyl groups fully substituted by phthalonitrile moieties was synthesized with a quantitative yield. Formation of the reaction byproducts was investigated depending on the synthesis conditions. The product was characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR. Curing of the resins with the addition of different amounts of novolac phenolic as curing agent (25, 50 and 75 wt.%) was studied by rheological and DSC experiments. Based on these data, a curing program was developed for the further thermosets' investigation: hot-pressing at 220 °C and 1.7 MPa for 20 min. TGA showed the highest thermal stability of the resin with 25 wt.% of novolac (T5% = 430 °C). The post-curing program was developed by the use of DMA with different heating rates and holding for various times at 280 or 300 °C (heating rate 0.5 °C/min). Carbon and glass fiber plastic laminates were fabricated via hot-pressing of prepregs with Tg's above 300 °C. Microcracks were formed in the CFRP, but void-free GFRP were fabricated and demonstrated superior mechanical properties (ILSS up to 86 MPa; compressive strength up to 620 MPa; flexural strength up to 946 MPa). Finally, flammability tests showed that the composite was extinguished in less than 5 s after the flame source was removed, so the material can be classified as V-0 according to the UL94 ratings. For the first time, fast-curing phthalonitrile prepregs were presented. The hot-pressing cycle of 20 min with 150 min free-standing post-curing yielded composites with the unique properties. The combination of mechanical properties, scale-up suitable fast-processing and inflammability makes the presented materials prospective for applications in the electric vehicle industries, fast train construction and the aerospace industry.

RESUMO

Bucky gel electrodes are composed of morphology-determining polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) filled with carbon nanotubes (CNT). The electrodes are commonly fabricated via the casting of a CNT dispersion containing PVDF and ionic liquid. In this study, several pore-forming additives such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and the common ionic liquid BMIMBF4 were used to control the morphology of the bucky gel electrodes. The crystalline phase type and content of PVDF in the electrodes were determined by FT-IR and DSC, respectively. SEM revealed a sponge-like structure in the case of the use of BMIMBF4 and a spherulite structure if PEG and DBP were used as additives. A strong influence of morphology on the anisotropic increase in the volume of electrodes upon impregnation with electrolyte was observed. The PEG-based electrode elongated more than the others, while the BMIMBF4-based electrode thickened to a greater extent. Ionic actuators were fabricated to experimentally reveal the effect of electrode morphology on their electromechanical efficiency. A high-precision vat photopolymerization technique was used to fabricate identical ionic membranes and minimize their influence on the properties of the actuators. The electrodes were characterized by the same porosity and electrical capacitance, while the actuators differ significantly in performance. As a result, a simple method of using pore-forming additives made it possible to increase the maximum deformation of bucky gel ionic actuators by 1.5 times by changing the morphology of the electrodes.

RESUMO

Here we show the effect of the ionic liquid nature, its content and monomer/crosslinker ratio on the copolymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) with triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) induced by UV or heat irradiation. For the first time, kinetics curves of photopolymerization NVP with TEGDMA in the presence of ionic liquids are obtained. The ionic liquids EmimBF4, BmimBF4, OmimBF4 and EmimTFSI with different cation and anion structures and lengths of the alkyl radical were varied in photopolymer compositions. To understand the influence of ionic liquids on the polymerization kinetics, photo-DSC, dynamic DSC, and FTIR were performed. Parameters obtained from photo-DSC curves allowed to develop the methodology for the stereolithography of ionogels. The presented data constitutes the complete dataset useful for 3D-printing of ionogels with high accuracy, which is reported in the main article.

RESUMO

This study built theoretical and practical models to evaluate the corrosion resistance of concrete for coastal offshore structures in Vietnam. A mathematical model was developed in the form of a system of nonlinear partial differential equations characterizing the diffusion "free calcium hydroxide" in a solid of a concrete structure. The model describes the process of non-stationary mass conductivity observed in the "concrete structure-marine environment" system under non-uniform arbitrary initial conditions, as well as combined boundary conditions of the second and third kind, taking into account the nonlinear nature of the coefficients of mass conductivity k and mass transfer ß. It was shown that the solution of the boundary value problem of non-stationary mass conductivity allows us to conclude about the duration of the service life of a concrete structure, which will be determined by the processes occurring at the interface: in concrete-mass conductivity, depending on the structural and mechanical characteristics of hydraulic structures, and in the liquid phase-mass transfer, determined by the conditions of interaction at the interface of the indicated phases.

RESUMO

Two types of poly(5-phenyl-2-norbornene) were synthesized via ring opening metathesis and addition polymerization. The polymers sulfonation reaction under homogeneous conditions resulted in ionomer with high sulfonation degree up to 79% (IEC 3.36 meq/g). The prepared ionomer was characterized by DSC, GPC, 1H NMR and FT-IR. Polymers for electromechanical applications soluble in common polar organic solvents were obtained by replacing proton of sulfonic group with imidazolium and 1-methylimidazlium. Membranes were prepared using the above-mentioned polymers and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMImBF4), as well as mixtures with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Mechanical, morphological, and conductive properties of the membranes were examined by tensile testing, SEM, and impedance spectroscopy, respectively. Dry and air-stable actuators with electrodes based on SWCNT were fabricated via hot-pressing. Actuators with membranes based on methylimidazolium containing ionomers outperformed classical bucky gel actuator and demonstrated high strain (up to 1.14%) and generated stress (up to 1.21 MPa) under low voltage of 2 V.

RESUMO

We studied the static and dynamic mechanical properties of crosslinked polymer matrices using multiscale simulations and experiments. We continued to develop the multiscale methodology for generating atomistic polymer networks, and applied it to the case of phthalonitrile resin. The mechanical properties of the resulting networks were analyzed using atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) and dissipative particle dynamics (DPD). The Young's and storage moduli increased with conversion, due both to the appearance of a network of covalent bonds, and to freezing of degrees of freedom and lowering of the glass transition temperature during crosslinking. The simulations' data showed good quantitative agreement with experimental dynamic mechanical analysis measurements at temperatures below the glass transition. The data obtained in MD and DPD simulations at elevated temperatures were conformable. This makes it possible to use the suggested approach for the prediction of mechanical properties of a broad range of polymer matrices, including ones with high structural heterogeneity.
