RESUMO

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of compassion fatigue in nurses caring for chronic diseases and the factors that affect it. Nurses who provide continuous care for chronic diseases are under the risk of facing compassion fatigue. Methods. The descriptive and cross-sectional study took place during January-March 2019. The nurse identification form and the 'compassion fatigue' sub-dimension of the professional quality of life scale were used to determine compassion fatigue. Results. Nurses experience compassion fatigue at a moderate level. Female nurses, those who experience a decrease in their willingness to provide care and those who intend to leave work experience compassion fatigue more. Decrease in the willingness to provide care plays a determinant role on compassion fatigue. Nurses who experience compassion fatigue are unwilling to provide care to their patients. Conclusion. This study indicates the importance of the necessity for development of a compassion fatigue prevention program in the clinical area. Nurses should be trained on compassion fatigue within the scope of in-service training. This subject should be included in the school curriculum to increase the awareness of nursing students' about compassion fatigue.

RESUMO

Hydatid Cyst is a public health problem in Turkey. Although it can lead to cyst formation in all organs and systems, the most frequently affected organs are the liver and lungs. Here, we reported a 14-year-old girl who presented with low back pain and hydatid vomita symptoms and signs. The abdominal and thoracic CT examinations of the patient revealed that hydatid cyst found in the liver was opened to the inferior vena cava and it was determined that it caused multiple emboli in the right atrium, pulmonary arteries and lungs. Albendazole treatment was commenced and the hydatid cyst in the liver was excised by surgery, and surgery was planned for the hydatid cyst lesion in the right atrium. However, in the control thorax BT before the surgery, it was found that the cysts in the cardiovascular structures disappeared, causing widespread pulmonary embolism and spread to the entire pulmonary field. The most important complication of intense hydatid pulmonary embolization is the development of pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure. In our patient, pulmonary artery pressures and right heart functions were normal in repeated echocardiography. With this case, we wanted to emphasize that the cardiovascular involvement of hydatid cyst may not always require surgery.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Parvovirus B19 infection generally presents as a transient viral illness in children but rarely shows systemic lupus erythematosus-like symptoms. CASE REPORT: Here we present a 7-year-old girl with parvovirus B19 infection who had prolonged fever, rash, pancytopenia and hypocomplementemia making it difficult do differentiate from the first episode of systemic lupus erythematosus. Because she had severe progressive pancytopenia she was administered intravenous immune globulin treatment and her clinical course was dramatically improved. DISCUSSION: Parvovirus B19 infection can mimic systemic lupus erythematosus and it may be difficult to differentiate a recent parvovirus B19 infection and the first presentation of systemic lupus erythematosus. Absence of discoid lesions, alopecia, Raynaud phenomenon and autoimmune hemolytic anemia may help to distinguish parvovirus B19 infection from systemic lupus erythematosus. CONCLUSIONS: Parvovirus B19 infection may cause a severe clinical picture resembling systemic lupus erythematosus even in otherwise healthy children. Intravenous immune globulin treatment might be considered in cases resistant to supportive management.
