RESUMO

PyMCGPU-IR is an innovative occupational dose monitoring tool for interventional radiology procedures. It reads the radiation data from the Radiation Dose Structured Report of the procedure and combines this information with the position of the monitored worker recorded using a 3D camera system. This information is used as an input file for the fast Monte Carlo radiation transport code MCGPU-IR in order to assess the organ doses, Hp(10) and Hp(0.07), as well as the effective dose. In this study, Hp(10) measurements of the first operator during an endovascular aortic aneurysm repair procedure and a coronary angiography using a ceiling suspended shield are compared to PyMCGPU-IR calculations. Differences in the two reported examples are found to be within 15%, which is considered as being very satisfactory. The study highlights the promising advantages of PyMCGPU-IR, although there are still several improvements that need to be implemented before its final clinical use.

RESUMO

This paper presents the results of a parametric study on the occupational exposure in interventional radiology to explore the influence of various variables on the staff doses. These variables include the angiography beam settings: x-ray peak voltage (kVp), added copper filtration, field diameter, beam projection and source to detector distance. The study was performed using Monte-Carlo simulations with MCNPX for more than 5600 combinations of parameters that account for different clinical situations. Additionally, the analysis of the results was performed using both multiple and random forest regression to build a predictive model and to quantify the importance of each variable when the variables simultaneously change. Primary and secondary projections were found to have the most effect on the scatter fraction that reaches the operator followed by the effect of changing the x-ray beam quality. The effect of changing the source to image intensifier distance had the lowest effect.

RESUMO

The presence of (138)La and (227)Ac impurities in LaBr3(Ce) scintillator crystals is a drawback for their use in environmental radiation monitoring. A method is presented to evaluate the internal (138)La activity. Firstly, an experimental set-up is prepared with the LaBr3(Ce) crystal acting as the radiation source and an HPGe detector that acquires the photon spectrum. Then, the internal background spectrum is simulated with a modified version of the PENELOPE/penEasy Monte Carlo code. The simulated spectra agree with measurements conducted at ultra-low-background facilities.
