RESUMO

Composites suitable for rotational molding technology based on poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and filled with hollow glass microspheres (HGM) or functionalized hollow glass microspheres (HGMf) were prepared via melt-compounding. The functionalization of glass microspheres was carried out by a silanization treatment in order to improve the compatibility between the inorganic particles and the polymer matrix and achieve a good dispersion of glass microspheres in the matrix and an enhanced filler-polymer adhesion. The crystallization behavior of materials was studied by DSC under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions and the nucleating effect of the glass microspheres was proven. In particular, the presence of silanized glass microspheres promoted faster crystallization rates and higher nucleation activity, which are enhanced by 75% and 50%, respectively, comparing neat PCL and the composite filled with 20 wt% HGMf. The crystalline and supermolecular structure of PCL and composites crystallized from the melt was evaluated by WAXD and SAXS, highlighting differences in terms of crystallinity index and structural parameters as a function of the adopted crystallization conditions.

The challenge to manufacture medical devices with specific antibacterial functions, and the growing demand for systems able to limit bacterial resistance growth, necessitates the development of new technologies which can be easily produced at an industrial level. The object of this work was the study and the development of silver, titanium dioxide, and chitosan composites for the realization and/or implementation of biomedical devices. Thermoplastic elastomeric polyurethane was selected and used as matrix for the various antibacterial functions introduced during the processing phase (melt compounding). This strategy was employed to directly incorporate antimicrobial agents into the main constituent material of the devices themselves. With the exception of the composite filled with titanium dioxide, all of the other tested composites were shown to possess satisfactory mechanical properties. The best antibacterial effects were obtained with all the composites against Staphylococcus aureus: viability was efficiently inhibited by the prepared materials in four different bacterial culture concentrations.

The technique of grafting side chains onto a linear polymeric backbone is commonly used to confer to the new polymeric material with desired properties, such as tunable solubility, ionic charge, biocompatibility, or specific interactions with biological systems. In this paper, two new polybenzofulvene backbones were assembled by spontaneous polymerization of the appropriate benzofulvene monomers (4,6-PO-BF3k and 4',6-PO-BF3k) bearing two clickable propargyloxy groups in different positions of the 3-phenylindene scaffold. Poly-4,6-PO-BF3k and poly-4',6-PO-BF3k were grafted with monomethyl oligo(ethylene glycol) (MOEG) to prepare two new polybenzofulvene brushes (i.e., poly-4,6-MOEG-9-TM-BF3k and poly-4',6-MOEG-9-TM-BF3k) by means of a "grafting onto" approach, that were characterized from the point of view of their macromolecular features, aggregation liability, and in a preliminary evaluation of biocompatibility. The obtained results make these PEGylated polybenzofulvene brushes (PPBFB) derivatives potentially useful as nanocarriers for nanoencapsulation and delivery of drug molecules.

Mats of wool-derived keratin nanofibre have been prepared by electrospinning solutions of keratin in formic acid at 20 and 15 wt.%, and obtaining nanofibres with mean diameter of about 400 and 250 nm, respectively. These mats can find applications in tissue engineering (they can mimic the native extracellular matrix) and in wastewater treatment (they can trap small particles and adsorb heavy-metals). A drawback to overcome is their solubility in water. A stabilization method, based on a thermal treatment alternative to the use of formaldehyde, is proposed. The solubility test in the dithiothreitol/urea extraction buffer, the amino acid composition analysis and studies on keratin secondary structures suggest that the improved stability in water of thermally treated mats can be ascribed to the formation of amide bonds between acid and basic groups of some amino acid side chains.

Fibers made of cellulose and silk fibroin at different composition were wet spun from solutions by using N-methylmorpholine N-oxide hydrates (NMMO/H(2)O) as solvent and ethanol as coagulant. Different spinning conditions were used. The fibers were characterized by different techniques: FTIR-Raman, scanning electron microscopy, wide-angle x-ray diffraction, DSC analysis. The results evidence a phase separation in the whole blends compositions. The tensile characterization, however, illustrates that the properties of the blends fibers are higher respect to a linear behaviour between the pure polymers, confirming a good compatibility between cellulose and silk fibroin. The fibers containing 75% of cellulose show better mechanical properties than pure cellulose fibers: modulus of about 23 GPa and strength to break of 307 MPa.
