RESUMO

Soft tissue defects are a common clinical challenge mostly caused by trauma, congenital anomalies and oncological surgery. Current soft tissue reconstruction options include synthetic materials (fillers and implants) and autologous adipose tissue transplantation through flap surgery and/or lipotransfer. Both reconstructive options hold important disadvantages to which vascularized adipose tissue engineering (VATE) strategies could offer solutions. In this review, we first summarized pivotal characteristics of functional adipose tissue such as the structure, function, cell types, development and extracellular matrix (ECM). Next, we discussed relevant cell sources and how they are applied in different state-of-the-art VATE techniques. Herein, biomaterial scaffolds and hydrogels, ECMs, spheroids, organoids, cell sheets, three dimensional printing and microfluidics are overviewed. Also, we included extracellular vesicles and emphasized their potential role in VATE. Lastly, current challenges and future perspectives in VATE are pointed out to help to pave the road towards clinical applications.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to evaluate a balloon expandable transcatheter heart valve (THV) system (Myval) at 6-month follow-up in ovine banding model. Eleven THV systems were implanted via carotid approach. There were 2 procedure-related deaths and 2 premature deaths. At 6 months all valves that completed follow-up (n = 7) were functional, with no significant regurgitation, calcification, thrombi, or vegetation. Mean pressure gradient was 21.9 ± 11 mm Hg, maximum velocity = 3.3 ± 1 m/s, and ejection fraction was 53.3 ± 6%. Myval THV showed optimal hemodynamic performance and biocompatibility.

RESUMO

Coffee husks represent about 12 wt % of coffee grains, generating a significant impact on the environment because of its inadequate disposal. In Colombia, this waste presents an energy resource opportunity equivalent to over 49,106 TJ per year. However, several challenges related to this type of biomass, such as the moisture content, the irregular shapes, and the low bulk density, make its use difficult in current burners. Thus, in this paper, the combustion of coffee husk pellets was studied in detail to design a high-efficiency burner to produce energy for coffee drying. The pellets were prepared in a pelletizer with 15% moisture and 20% yield and burned in a bench-scale lateral reactor to determine the energy density. It was found that the combustion properties of coffee husk depend on the specifics of the pelleting process. The energy density values were I v = 0.789 MW/m3 and I g = 0.007 MW/m2, which could be used to design the combustion chamber for coffee husk burning.
