RESUMO

Not only can perovskite solar cells be exposed to high temperatures, up to 80 °C, depending on the operating environment, but absorbed energy is lost as heat, so it is important to have thermal stability for commercialization. However, in the case of the recently reported p-i-n structure solar cell, most of the electron and hole transport layers are composed of organic materials vulnerable to heat transfer, so the light absorption layer may be continuously exposed to high temperatures when the solar cell is operated. In this study, we attempted to improve the thermal conductivity of the electron transport layer using phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) containing zinc oxide (ZnO). As a result, the thermal conductivity was improved by more than 7.4% and 23.5% by adding 6.57vol% and 22.38vol% of ZnO to PCBM, respectively. In addition, the insertion of ZnO resulted in changes in the electron transport behavior and energy level of the electron transport layer. As a result, it was confirmed that not only could the temperature stability of the perovskite thin film be improved, but the efficiency of the solar cell could also be improved from 14.12% to 17.97%.

RESUMO

We investigated the effect of specific surface area on the electrochemical properties of NiCo2O4 (NCO) for glucose detection. NCO nanomaterials with controlled specific surface areas were prepared by additive-assisted hydrothermal synthesis, and self-assembled nanostructures with urchin-, pine-needle-, tremella-, and flower-like morphologies were obtained. The novelty of this method is the systematic control of chemical reaction routes assisted by the addition of different additives during synthesis, which results in the spontaneous formation of various morphologies without any difference in the crystal structure and chemical states of the constituent elements. Such morphological control of NCO nanomaterials leads to considerable changes in the electrochemical performance for glucose detection. Combined with materials characterization, the relationship between the specific surface area and the electrochemical performance is discussed for glucose detection. This work can provide scientific insights for tailoring the surface area of nanostructures, which determines their functionality for potential applications in glucose biosensors.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study examined the number of suicides in the Republic of Korea (ROK) Armed Forces and compared the relative suicide risk of military personnel with that in the general population. METHODS: Age-, sex-, and calendar year-adjusted standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to compare the number of suicides between the ROK Armed Forces and the general population. RESULTS: Between 2011 and 2016, there were 405 suicides by ROK Armed Forces Personnel. The ROK Armed Forces had significantly fewer suicides than expected compared with the general population (SMR = 0.46, 95% confidence interval 0.41~0.50, based on 405 deaths). This was evident for both rank groups (soldiers and officers). In addition, a significant decrease was observed in the soldier group when comparing the SMR in 2016 with the previous 5-year average. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, during the period 2011-2016, the ROK Armed Forces had fewer suicides than expected when compared with the general population.

RESUMO

We report a detection system for simultaneous measurement of cellular and molecular markers of cancer. Magnetic beads conjugated with antibodies against a specific antigen are used to capture both free molecules and whole cells overexpressing the antigen. The target-bound beads then flow through a microfluidic chamber where they are drawn to a glass surface by an external magnetic field. The cells and molecules captured on the surface are quantitatively analyzed using fluorescent microscopy. The system was characterized by detecting free folate receptor (FR) and an FR+ cancer cell line (KB) in culture media. The system detected as low as 10 pM of FR and captured 87% of the spiked KB cells at a volumetric throughput of 3 mL/min. We further demonstrated the detection of 100 KB cells and 200 pM FR spiked into healthy human blood to simulate detection of rare cells and protein biomarkers present in a cancer patient's blood sample. The FR concentration was measured to be 244 pM (including the intrinsic FR present in the blood), and the total number of KB cells in the sample was estimated to be 98. The potential of this approach in clinical diagnostics was also demonstrated by detecting both FR+ cells and free FR in an ascites sample obtained from an ovarian cancer patient. Because of the system's capability to detect multiple targets at the same time, its high throughput, and its overall simplicity, we expect it to be highly useful in a wide range of research settings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The presence of inflammation in prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) has been well described but the cellular mechanisms by which inflammation modulates the prostate are currently unclear. Prostate stem cells (PSC) not only maintain prostate homeostasis but also are considered to be the cell of origin of PCa and an important contributor to BPH. However, the impact of inflammation on PSC is not well understood. Therefore, we initiated studies to evaluate the effect of inflammation on PSC. METHOD: Ovalbumin specific CD8(+) T cells were intravenously delivered to intact and castrated prostate ovalbumin expressing transgenic-3 (POET-3) mice to induce inflammation. Lin (CD45/CD31)(-) Sca1(+) CD49f(+) cells (LSC) and progenitor cells within LSC were determined by flow cytometry. Sorted LSC were subjected to a prostate sphere forming assay to evaluate PSC clonal propagation, proliferation, immediate differentiation, and self-renewal ability. Density of individual spheres was measured by a cantilever-based resonator weighing system. Morphology and characterization of prostate spheres was determined by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Finally, immediate PSC differentiation in sphere formation was determined by immunofluorescence for epithelial cytokeratin markers cytokeratin (CK) 5 and CK8. RESULT: Data presented here demonstrate a significant expansion of the proliferative (BrdU(+) ) LSC population, including CK5(+) , p63(+) , CK18(+) cells, as well as intermediate cells (CK5(+) /CK8(+) ) in inflamed prostates. Histological images reveal that PSC from inflamed prostates produce significantly larger spheres, indicating that the enhanced proliferation observed in LSC is sustained in vitro in the absence of inflammatory mediators. In addition, cultures from inflamed PSC yielded increased number of tubule-like spheres. These tube-like spheres grown from PSCs isolated from inflamed mice exhibited stratification of a CK8(+) luminal-like layer and a CK5(+) basal-like layer. Notably, the numbers of spheres formed by inflamed and non-inflamed PSC were equal, suggesting that even though proliferation is enhanced by inflammation, the homeostatic level of PSC is maintained. CONCLUSION: Induction of inflammation promotes PSC expansion and immediate differentiation through highly proliferative progenitor cells while the homeostasis of PSC is maintained.

RESUMO

We report on-chip isolation and detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood samples using a system that integrates a microchip with immunomagnetics, high-throughput fluidics and size-based filtration. CTCs in a sample are targeted via their surface antigens using magnetic beads functionalized with antibodies. The mixture is then run through a fluidic chamber that contains a micro-fabricated chip with arrays of 8 µm diameter apertures. The fluid runs parallel to the microchip while a magnetic field is generated underneath to draw the beads and cells bound to them toward the chip surface for detection of CTCs that are larger than the apertures and clear out free beads and other smaller particles bound to them. The parallel flow configuration allows high volumetric flow rates, which reduces nonspecific binding to the chip surface and enables multiple circulations of the sample fluid through the system in a short period of time. In this study we first present models of the magnetic and fluidic forces in the system using a finite element method. We then verify the simulation results experimentally to determine an optimal flow rate. Next, we characterize the system by detecting cancer cell lines spiked into healthy human blood and show that on average 89% of the spiked MCF-7 breast cancer cells were detected. We finally demonstrate detection of CTCs in 49 out of 50 blood samples obtained from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients and pancreatic cancer (PANC) patients. The number of CTCs detected ranges from 2 to 122 per 8 mL s of blood. We also demonstrate a statistically significant difference between the CTC counts of NSCLC patients who have received therapy and those who have not.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using a virtual reality (VR) casino environment in cue exposure therapy (CET) for gambling. The main objective of this study was to assess the ability of five VR casino cues to elicit subjective reactions and physiological responses that can be used within the CET paradigm. A second objective was to analyze changes in participants' urge to gamble after repeated exposure to a VR casino program and relaxation training. METHODS: Twelve recreational gamblers were exposed to five virtual environments with casino-related cues that reproduced typical gambling situations. Self-reported subjective urges and psychophysiological responses were recorded during exposure. RESULTS: All virtual environments with casino-related cues generated craving in recreational gamblers, whereas no increase in the psychophysiological variables was observed. In addition, urges to gamble elicited by VR casino environment reduced through repeated exposure and relaxation training. CONCLUSION: These findings provide evidence of the effectiveness of VR for simulating casino environments in the treatment of gambling.

RESUMO

We report a simple and highly versatile system to select and weigh individual dry biological particles. The system is composed of a microtweezer to pick and place individual particles and a cantilever-based resonator to weigh them. The system can weigh entities that vary from a red blood cell (~10(-11) g) to the eye-brain complex of an insect (~10(-6) g), covering a 5-order-of-magnitude mass range. Due to its versatility and ease of use, this weighing method is highly compatible with established laboratory practices. The system can provide complementary mass information for a wide variety of individual particles imaged using scanning electron microscopy and determine comparative weights of individual biological entities that are attached to microparticles as well as weigh fractions of individual biological entities that have been subjected to focused ion beam milling.

RESUMO

Previous studies have reported promising results regarding the effect of repeated virtual cue exposure therapy on nicotine dependence. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of virtual cue exposure therapy (CET) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for nicotine dependence. Thirty subjects with nicotine dependence participated in 4 weeks of treatment with either virtual CET (n=15) or CBT (n=15). All patients were male, and none received nicotine replacement treatment during the study period. The main setting of the CET used in this study was a virtual bar. The primary foci of the CBT offered were (a) smoking cessation education, (b) withdrawal symptoms, (c) coping with high-risk situations, (d) cognitive reconstruction, and (e) stress management. Daily smoking count, level of expiratory carbon monoxide (CO), level of nicotine dependence, withdrawal symptoms, and subjective craving were examined on three occasions: week 0 (baseline), week 4 (end of treatment), and week 12 (follow-up assessment). After treatment, the daily smoking count, the expiratory CO, and nicotine dependence levels had significantly decreased. These effects continued during the entire study period. Similar changes were observed in both virtual CET and CBT groups. We found no interaction between type of therapy and time of measurement. Although the current findings are preliminary, the present study provided evidence that virtual CET is effective for the treatment of nicotine dependence at a level comparable to CBT.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to explore a psychological profile of Internet addiction (IA) considering impulsivity as a key personality trait and as a key component of neuropsychological functioning. Twenty three subjects with IA (Young's Internet Addiction Test scores=70 or more) and 24 sex-, age-, and intelligence-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Participants filled out a questionnaire about trait impulsivity, the Trait Characteristic Inventory, depression, and anxiety. Next, we administered traditional neuropsychological tests including the Stroop et al. and computerized neuropsychological tests using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery. The IA group exhibited more trait impulsivity than the healthy control group. They also scored higher for novelty seeking and harm avoidance. The IA group performed more poorly than the healthy control group in a computerized stop signal test, a test for inhibitory function and impulsivity; no group differences appeared for other neuropsychological tests. The IA group also scored higher for depression and anxiety, and lower for self-directedness and cooperativeness. In conclusion, individuals with IA exhibited impulsivity as a core personality trait and in their neuropsychological functioning.

RESUMO

Carbon nanotube (CNT) has excellent electrical and thermal conductivity and high aspect ratio for X-ray tube cathode. However, CNT field emission cathode has been shown unstable field emission and short life time due to field evaporation by high current density and detachment by electrostatic force. An alternative approach in this direction is the introduction of CNT yarn, which is a one dimensional assembly of individual carbon nanotubes bonded by the Van der Waals force. Because CNT yarn is composed with many CNTs, CNT yarns are expected to increase current density and life time for X-ray tube applications. In this research, CNT yarn was fabricated by spinning of a super-aligned CNT forest and was characterized for application to an X-ray tube cathode. CNT yarn showed a high field emission current density and a long lifetime of over 450 hours. Applying the CNT yarn field emitter to the X-ray tube cathode, it was possible to obtain micro-scale resolution images. The relationship between the field emission properties and the microstructure evolution was investigated and the unraveling effect of the CNT yarn was discussed.

RESUMO

Since carbon nanotube (CNT) was first discovered in 1991, it has been considered as a viable type of conductive filler for electromagnetic wave absorption materials in the GHz range. In this paper, pearl-necklace-structure CNT/Ni nano-powders were fabricated by a polyol process as conductive fillers. Compared to synthesized CNT, pearl-necklace Ni-decorated CNT increased the electrical conductivity by an order of 1 due to the enhancement of the Ni-conductive network. Moreover, the decorated Ni particles prevented the agglomeration of CNTs by counterbalancing the Van der Walls interaction between the CNTs. A CNT/Ni nanocomposite showed a homogeneous dispersion in an epoxy-based matrix. This enhanced physical morphology and electrical properties lead to an increase in the loss tangent and reflection loss in the CNT/Ni/Epoxy nanocomposite compared to these characteristics of a CNT/Epoxy nanocomposite in range of 8-12 GHz. The electromagnetic wave absorption properties of CNT/Ni/epoxy nanocomposites will provide enormous opportunities for electronic applications where lightweight EMI shielding or electro-magnetic wave absorption properties are necessary.

RESUMO

A composite material consisting of Bacillus subtilis spores suspended in a humidity sensitive hydrogel can be used to pattern biomolecules in different concentrations directly onto glass surfaces using a mechanical micromanipulator. By altering the relative humidity surrounding the composite gel during deposition, surface concentration of patterned biomolecules can be controlled and varied to create user-defined, biomolecular surface concentrations.

RESUMO

Carbon nanotube has good electrical properties and a high aspect ratio, which enable it to obtain a high current at a low voltage due to its high field. Due to the life and uniformity of their emission tips, carbon nanotube field emitters are hard to commercialize. A field emitter with a three-dimensional (3D) structure was fabricated in this study to overcome such problems. In the 3D-structured field emitter, the field emission tips are located only at the vertical plane, where an enlarged field emission area can be attained. To fabricate the tip of the 3D-structured field emitter, carbon nanotube/silver nanocomposite powders were fabricated via molecular-level mixing and were sprayed at a substrate with good attachment and homogeneous dispersion between the CNT tips and the silver. The field emission properties of the 3D-structured field emitter were then determined and compared with those of a flat field emitter. The field emission area of the 3D-structured field emitter was found to be 4.5 times larger than that of the flat field emitter, with six times higher current density. Moreover, the 3D-structured field emitter had better stability than the flat field emitter. At a high gate field, the emission images of the 3D-structured field emitter showed light spots expanded towards the gate direction.

RESUMO

Coarse piecewise linear approximation of surfaces causes undesirable polygonal appearance of silhouettes. We present an efficient method for smoothing the silhouettes of coarse triangle meshes using efficient 3D curve reconstruction and simple local re-meshing. It does not assume the availability of a fine mesh and generates only moderate amount of additional data at run time. Furthermore, polygonal feature edges are also smoothed in a unified framework. Our method is based on a novel interpolation scheme over silhouette triangles and this ensures that smooth silhouettes are faithfully reconstructed and always change continuously with respect to continuous movement of the view point or objects. We speed up computation with GPU assistance to achieve real-time rendering of coarse meshes with the smoothed silhouettes. Experiments show that this method outperforms previous methods for silhouette smoothing.

RESUMO

We isolated a filamentous bacteriophage, VfO4K68, from the pandemic Vibrio parahaemolyticus strain belonging to 04:K68 serovar. The VfO4K68 DNA lacked a 1,893-bp fragment present in that of the distinctive region of f237, a filamentous phage isolated from a pandemic 03:K6 strain (Nasu, H. et al., J. Clin. Microbiol., 38, 2156-2161, 2000). The deletion resulted in the formation of a novel open reading frame (ORF) that possesses homology to the ORF 27 of ETA phage and staphylococcal enterotoxin E (SEE) of Staphylococcus aureus. VfO4K68 was able to infect the recipient 03:K6 serovar strains. These results suggest that VfO4K68 might act as a genetic transmitter and play some roles in the pandemic V. parahaemolyticus infection.
