RESUMO

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal illness caused by a mutated feline coronavirus (FCoV). This disease is characterized by its complexity, resulting from systemic infection, antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), and challenges in accessing effective therapeutics. Extract derived from Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek (VRE) exhibits various pharmacological effects, including antiviral activity. This study aimed to investigate the antiviral potential of VRE against FCoV, addressing the urgent need to advance the treatment of FIP. We explored the anti-FCoV activity, antiviral mechanism, and combinational application of VRE by means of in vitro antiviral assays. Our findings reveal that VRE effectively inhibited the cytopathic effect induced by FCoV, reduced viral proliferation, and downregulated spike protein expression. Moreover, VRE blocked FCoV in the early and late infection stages and was effective under in vitro ADE infection. Notably, when combined with VRE, the polymerase inhibitor GS-441524 or protease inhibitor GC376 suppressed FCoV more effectively than monotherapy. In conclusion, this study characterizes the antiviral property of VRE against FCoV in vitro, and VRE possesses therapeutic potential for FCoV treatment.

LncRNAs are vital regulators for lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC). However, the detailed role that LINC01133 plays in LUSC is unclear. This work sought to explore the potential function of LINC01133.Levels of LINC01133, miR-30d-5p, and MARCKS were separately tested in both tissues and cells using qRT-PCR. Proliferation was assessed through MTT experiment and apoptosis was detected upon flow cytometry. Transwell experiments were implemented to evaluate migratory and invasive abilities. The interaction between two genes was affirmed through luciferase reporter assay and RNA pull-down experiment. Western blotting measured the protein level of MARCKS. Animal models were established and tissues were taken for IHC analysis of MARCKS and Ki67.LINC01133 was elevated in LUSC and its downregulation could suppress proliferation, migration and invasion but induced apoptosis. LINC01133 interacted with and regulated the binding of miR-30d-5p to MARCKS. LINC01133/miR-30d-5p axis mediated proliferation, apoptosis, migration and invasion in LUSC cells, as well as modulated tumor growth in animal models. LINC01133 interacted with miR-30d-5p to modulate MARCKS expression, contributes to promoted cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and inhibited cell apoptosis in vitro, and promoted tumor growth in vivo. These findings could provide possible therapeutic targets in view of LUSC treatment in the future.

ABSTRACT: Chen, C-F, Chuang, C-Y, Wang, C-C, Liu, S-A, Chang, H-W, and Chan, K-H. Lower repetition induces similar postactivation performance enhancement to repetition maximum after a single set of heavy-resistance exercise. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2023-The study was divided into 2 parts to investigate the acute postactivation performance enhancement (PAPE) responses to lower repetitions at the same load of 87% 1 repetition maximum (1RM) in the upper and lower body. In part 1, 14 athletes performed plyometric push-up (PPU) after the conditioning activity (CA) of bench press (BP). In part 2, 13 athletes performed a countermovement jump (CMJ) after the CA of parallel squat (PS). Subjects completed 3, 4, or 5 repetitions (trials CA-3, CA-4, or CA-5) of BP or PS in randomized and counterbalanced order. The velocity of each movement of the trial was recorded. The PPU or CMJ was tested every 2 minutes after the trial up to 12 minutes to assess the Post-Max and optimal individual PAPE time. The mean velocity of the last movement of BP in CA-5 was significantly lower than that in CA-3 (0.23 ± 0.06 vs. 0.28 ± 0.06 m·second -1 , p < 0.05), and the velocity of PS in CA-4 or CA-5 was significantly lower than that in CA-3 (0.53 ± 0.07 and 0.50 ± 0.05 vs. 0.57 ± 0.07 m·second -1 , p < 0.05). The peak force of PPU and jump height of CMJ at Post-Max in the 3 trials were significantly greater than those at Pre ( p < 0.05). There were no significant differences among trials in the optimal individual PAPE times in either part of the study. A single set of 87% 1RM resistance exercises with 3 or 4 repetitions in both the upper body and the lower body induces similar PAPE to repetition maximum.

Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3) is a newly emerging virus associated with porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS) and reproductive disorders, impacting global pig populations. Porcine circoviruses contain two major open reading frames (ORFs), and the ORF2 encodes the viral capsid protein (Cap). Cap is the most antigenic structural protein and an ideal candidate for the development of vaccines and diagnostic reagents. This study generated a monoclonal antibody (MAb) specific to PCV3 Cap, MAb CCC160, for diagnosis and pathogenesis studies of this novel virus. The MAb specifically recognized PCV3-infected swine lymph node tissue in an immunohistochemical analysis confirming its clinical diagnostic potential. In addition, a novel linear B-cell epitope recognized by MAb CCC160 was identified at the amino acid region 120-134 of Cap. Nuclear localization analysis of PCV3 Cap revealed a potential nuclear localization signal (NLS) in the middle region (aa 131-143) in addition to the dominant N-terminal NLS that is already known. A cell viability assay further demonstrated that the cytotoxicity of PCV3 Cap is correlated with its nuclear localization, indicating a crucial role of Cap in the pathogenic mechanism of PCV3. A full-length construct of PCV3 Cap was successfully expressed using a baculovirus expression system and purified recombinant proteins self-assembled into virus-like particles (VLPs). The protein constitution of the VLPs was confirmed by MAb CCC160 recognition, indicating the correct conformation and specificity of VLP and exhibiting the linear epitope aa 120-134 on the VLP surface. These results provide insights for developing diagnostic tools and potential VLP vaccines for PCV3, revealing its pathogenesis and antigenic properties.

Classical swine fever (CSF), caused by classical swine fever virus (CSFV), is a highly contagious disease in pigs. In Taiwan, the emerging genotype 2.1 (G2.1) CSFV caused sporadic outbreaks in 1994 and replaced the previous G3.4 CSFV in the field. The shift of CSFV genotypes to G2 CSFV was also observed in several CSFV-affected countries. The present study aimed to explore the mechanism of the genotype shift of CSFV. Two groups of specific pathogen-free (SPF) pigs were first inoculated with either G2.1 or G3.4 CSFV (single-inoculated group) and housed together with naïve SPF pigs (cohabitating group). The results showed that peak viremia, viral loads in blood and tissues, and viral shedding of G2.1 were consistently higher than those of G3.4 CSFV in single-inoculated and cohabitating pigs. The phenomenon of superinfection exclusion (SIE), characterized by the prevention of secondary infection by a primary infection, was readily observed in CSFV single-inoculated pigs. Interestingly, coinfection of both genotypes of CSFV was observed in 3 out of 4 cohabitating pigs, while only one pig was infected with G2.1 CSFV alone. These findings suggest that the genetic shift in CSFV in the field may be in part the consequence of SIE.

Pigeon paramyxovirus-1 (PPMV-1), a genetic variant of avian paramyxovirus-1 (APMV-1), has been identified in Columbiformes and is the primary cause of diseases in captive and free-ranging pigeons. However, it has also been reported that PPMV-1 can infect chickens naturally and experimentally, thus posing a potential threat to the poultry industry. This study investigated a lethal outbreak of paramyxovirus infection that occurred among 16 oriental turtle doves (Streptopelia orientalis) in a walk-in aviary at a zoo from March to April 2021. Necropsies were performed, and histopathological findings revealed mild to moderate lymphoplasmacytic infiltration in several organs, such as the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and lungs. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks, virus isolation from fresh tissue, and in situ hybridization against the fusion (F) protein confirmed the diagnosis for PPMV-1 infection. The isolated strain NTU/C239/21 was fully sequenced by next-generation sequencing, and the results of phylogenetic analyses revealed that the F protein of NTU/C239/21 shared 98.8% nucleotide sequence identity with Pigeon/Taiwan/AHRI121/2017, which was isolated from a feral pigeon in Taiwan. The present study is the first to identify PPMV-1 infection in Streptopelia orientalis and suggests that Streptopelia orientalis may also play an important role in spreading the infection, similar to pigeons in APMV-1 spreading.

Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) shares high antigenic homology with other members of the genus Pestivirus. Because several pestivirus species can also infect swine, eliciting cross-reactive antibodies, it is important to define CSFV-specific epitopes for the differential diagnosis of classical swine fever (CSF) by serology. For this purpose, epitope mapping of seven monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), recognizing sites on the D/A domain of glycoprotein E2, was performed using recombinant expressed antigenic domains and mutants of E2, as well as an overlapping peptide library. Three CSFV-specific epitopes, i.e., 780-IEEMGDDFGFGLCPF-794, 810-NGSAFYLVCPIGWTG-824, and 846-REKPF-850, were identified within the D/A domain of E2. Site-directed mutagenesis further confirmed that residues 783-MGD-785, 789-FGLCPF-794, 813-AFYLVCPIGWTG-824, and 846-REK-848 were critical residues in these regions. In addition, a F789S difference within the epitope 780-IEEMGDDFGFGLCPF-794 was responsible for the absence of binding of two mAbs to the E2 protein of the live attenuated CSFV vaccine strain Riems. Structural modeling revealed that, the three epitopes are located near each other, suggesting that they may form a more complex conformational epitope on the D/A domain in vivo. Six of the mAbs neutralized viruses of diverse genotypes, indicating that the target epitopes are involved in virus interaction with cells. The binding of CSFV to cells was significantly reduced after pre-incubation with either truncated E2 proteins comprising the D/A domain or with the CSFV-specific mAbs targeting the domain D/A. These epitopes identified on the D/A domain are important targets for virus neutralization that might be involved in the early steps of CSFV infection. These findings reveal potential candidates for improving the differential diagnosis of pestiviruses by serology.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis patients are at an increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and are excluded from preauthorization COVID-19 vaccine trials; therefore, their immunogenicity is uncertain. METHODS: To compare the antibody responses to homologous ChAdOx1 and mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in hemodialysis patients, 103 age- and sex-matched hemodialysis patients with two homologous prime-boost vaccinations were recruited to detect anti-receptor-binding domain (RBD) IgG levels and seroconversion rates (SCRs) 14 days after a prime dose (PD14), before and 28 days after a boost dose (pre-BD0 and BD28). RESULTS: Both mRNA-1273 and ChAdOx1 vaccinations elicited immunogenicity in study subjects, and the former induced higher anti-RBD IgG levels than the latter. The SCRs of both groups increased over time and varied widely from 1.82% to 97.92%, and were significantly different at PD14 and pre-BD0 regardless of different thresholds. At BD28, the SCRs of the ChAdOx1 group and the mRNA-1273 group were comparable using a threshold ≥ 7.1 BAU/mL (93.96% vs. 97.92%) and a threshold ≥ 17 BAU/mL (92.73% vs. 97.92%), respectively, but they were significantly different using a threshold ≥ 20.2% of convalescent serum anti-RBD levels (52.73% vs. 95.83%). The seroconversion (≥20.2% of convalescent level) at BD28 was associated with mRNA-1273 vaccination after being adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, and the presence of solicited reactogenicity after a prime vaccination. CONCLUSION: Our prospective, observational cohort indicates that a full prime-boost mRNA-1273 vaccination is likely to provide higher immune protection in hemodialysis patients compared to ChAdOx1, and this population with a prime-boost ChAdOx1 vaccination should be prioritized for a third dose.

Feline injection-site sarcomas (FISSs) are highly invasive malignant mesenchymal neoplasms that arise from injection sites in cats. Although the tumorigenesis of FISSs is still uncertain, there is a consensus that FISS is associated with chronic inflammation caused by irritation of injection-related trauma and foreign chemical substances. Chronic inflammation can provide a proper microenvironment for tumour development, which has been known as one of the risk factors of tumorigenesis in many tumours. To investigate the tumorigenesis of FISS and screen for its potential therapeutic targets, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an inflammation-enhancing enzyme, was selected as a target for this study. In vitro experiments using FISS- and normal tissue-derived primary cells and robenacoxib, a highly selective COX-2 inhibitor, were performed. The results demonstrated that expression of COX-2 could be detected in formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded FISS tissues and FISS-derived primary cells. Cell viability, migration and colony formation of FISS-derived primary cells were inhibited, and cell apoptosis was enhanced by robenacoxib in a dose-dependent manner. However, susceptibility to robenacoxib varied in different lines of FISS primary cells and was not completely correlated with COX-2 expression. Our results suggest that COX-2 inhibitors could be potential adjuvant therapeutics against FISSs.

Right atrial thrombosis, which occurs alone, is rare in clinical practice. Its incidence and mechanism are unclear, but susceptibility factors are usually present at its occurrence: ischemic heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and chronic kidney disease. Complete isolated right atrial thrombosis rarely occurs. We report here a 47-year-old male patient with a right atrial mass on cardiac ultrasound and chest computed tomography (CT) and a history of previous right heart surgery with type 2 diabetes mellitus and atrial fibrillation, complaining of "chest tightness and shortness of breath after activity for half a month." The patient was admitted to the hospital and underwent right atrial mass resection, and the postoperative pathology showed "right atrial thrombus." As right atrial thrombus is very rare and can be a serious threat to life when it occurs in the heart, the prevention and treatment of right atrial thrombus are very important. Based on the analysis of this case, we believe that for patients with special medical history such as "post right heart surgery and atrial fibrillation," we need to be vigilant for atrial thrombosis.

Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious swine disease caused by the classical swine fever virus (CSFV), wreaking havoc on global swine production. The virus is divided into three genotypes, each comprising 4-7 sub-genotypes. The major envelope glycoprotein E2 of CSFV plays an essential role in cell attachment, eliciting immune responses, and vaccine development. In this study, to study the cross-reaction and cross-neutralizing activities of antibodies against different genotypes (G) of E2 glycoproteins, ectodomains of G1.1, G2.1, G2.1d, and G3.4 CSFV E2 glycoproteins from a mammalian cell expression system were generated. The cross-reactivities of a panel of immunofluorescence assay-characterized serum derived from pigs with/without a commercial live attenuated G1.1 vaccination against different genotypes of E2 glycoproteins were detected by ELISA. Our result showed that serum against the LPCV cross-reacted with all genotypes of E2 glycoproteins. To evaluate cross-neutralizing activities, hyperimmune serum from different CSFV E2 glycoprotein-immunized mice was also generated. The result showed that mice anti-E2 hyperimmune serum exhibited better neutralizing abilities against homologous CSFV than heterogeneous viruses. In conclusion, the results provide information on the cross-reactivity of antibodies against different genogroups of CSFV E2 glycoproteins and suggest the importance of developing multi-covalent subunit vaccines for the complete protection of CSF.

Video watermarking embeds a message into a cover video in an imperceptible manner, which can be retrieved even if the video undergoes certain modifications or distortions. Traditional watermarking methods are often manually designed for particular types of distortions and thus cannot simultaneously handle a broad spectrum of distortions. To this end, we propose a robust deep learning-based solution for video watermarking that is end-to-end trainable. Our model consists of a novel multiscale design where the watermarks are distributed across multiple spatial-temporal scales. Extensive evaluations on a wide variety of distortions show that our method outperforms traditional video watermarking methods as well as deep image watermarking models by a large margin. We further demonstrate the practicality of our method on a realistic video-editing application.

Baculovirus penaei (BP), the causative agent of tetrahedral baculovirosis, causes the death of penaeid genera at the larval and post-larval stages. BP has been reported in the Western Pacific, South-East Atlantic, and the State of Hawaii, but never in Asia. The clinical features of BP infection are non-specific, and diagnosis relies on histological and molecular methods. In the present study, we report the first identification of BP infection in a shrimp farm in Northern Taiwan in 2022. Histopathologically, several tetrahedral eosinophilic intranuclear occlusion bodies were observed in or budding out of the nuclei of the degenerative hepatopancreatic cells. In situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction confirmed tetrahedral baculovirosis infection caused by BP. Sequence alignment of the TW BP-1 with the USA BP strain reported in 1995 revealed 94.81% identity in the partial gene. The possibility of the emergence of USA-like BP in Taiwan highlights the importance of further epidemiological investigations on the prevalence and impact of BP in Asia.

Bacillus licheniformis-fermented products (BLFP) are probiotics with antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties that can improve growth performance. This study aimed to compare the fecal microbiota of diarrheal cats with chronic diarrhea (n = 8) with that of healthy cats (n = 4) from the same household using next-generation sequencing, and evaluate the effectiveness of oral administration of BLFP in relieving clinical signs and altering the intestinal microbiota in diarrheal cats. Six out of eight diarrheal cats showed clinical improvement after BLFP administration for 7 days, and the stool condition of the other two was normal. A higher Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio was noted in the feces of diarrheal cats without clinical improvement as compared with those in the healthy cats and in the diarrheal cats with clinical improvement after receiving BLFP. The phylum Bacteroidetes and class Bacteroidia decreased significantly in diarrheal cats regardless of BLFP administration. Blautia spp., Ruminococcus torques, and Ruminococcus gnavus, which belong to the Clostridium cluster XIVa and have been reported as beneficial to intestinal health, increased significantly in feces after treatment. Furthermore, Clostridium perfringens also significantly decreased in diarrheal cats after BLFP administration. Overall, BLFP could be a potential probiotic to relieve gastrointestinal symptoms and improve fecal microbiota in cats with chronic diarrhea.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect and clinical significance of different thoracic surgical approaches for patients with stage IIB-IVA esophageal squamous cell carcinoma on the survival and prognosis of postoperative radiotherapy patients. METHODS: One hundred thirty-two patients with stage IIB-IVA esophageal squamous cancer who received radiotherapy after surgery were screened for baseline characteristics and survival analysis. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to draw the survival curve for the follow-up data, and the log-rank test was used to compare the difference in survival rate between the two groups. The Cox regression model was used for multivariate survival analysis. RESULT: For stage IIB-IVA esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, the results of multivariate analysis showed that different surgical methods and clinical staging were independent factors affecting the survival and prognosis of patients after radiotherapy. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates of patients with advanced esophageal cancer through the left chest approach were 84.2%, 61.4%, and 36.8% respectively. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates of patients with advanced esophageal cancer through the right chest approach were 73.3%, 40.0%, and 21.3% respectively. There was no significant difference in the 1-year survival rate (P = 0.135) between the two surgical procedures. The 3-year survival rate (P < 0.05) and the 5-year survival rate (P < 0.05) were significantly different. CONCLUSION: For patients with stage IIB-IVA esophageal squamous cell carcinoma undergoing radiotherapy after surgery, the long-term survival prognosis of patients after the left thoracic approach is significantly higher than that of the right thoracic approach.

The serum neutralization (SN) test has been regarded as the "gold standard" for seroconversion following foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) vaccination, although a high-level biosafety laboratory is necessary. ELISA is one alternative, and its format is constantly being improved. For instance, standard polyclonal antisera have been replaced by monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) for catching and detecting antibodies, and inactive viruses have been replaced by virus-like particles (VLPs). To the best of current knowledge, however, no researchers have evaluated the performances of different MAbs as tracers. In previous studies, we successfully identified site 1 and site 2 MAbs Q10E and P11A. In this study, following the established screening platform, the VLPs of putative escape mutants from sites 1 to 5 were expressed and used to demonstrate that S11B is a site 3 MAb. Additionally, the vulnerability of VLPs prompted us to assess another diagnostic antigen: unprocessed polyprotein P1. Therefore, we established and evaluated the performance of blocking ELISA (bELISA) systems based on VLPs and P1, pairing them with Q10E, P11A, S11B, and the non-neutralizing TSG MAb as tracers. The results indicated that the VLP paired with S11B demonstrated the highest correlation with the SN titers (R2 = 0.8071, n = 63). Excluding weakly positive serum samples (SN = 16-32, n = 14), the sensitivity and specificity were 95.65% and 96.15% (kappa = 0.92), respectively. Additionally, the P1 pairing with Q10E also demonstrated a high correlation (R2 = 0.768). We also discovered that these four antibodies had steric effects on one another to varying degrees, despite recognizing distinct antigenic sites. This finding indicated that MAbs as tracers could not accurately detect specific antibodies, possibly because MAbs are bulky compared to a protomeric unit. However, our results still provide convincing support for the application of two pairs of bELISA systems: VLP:S11B-HRP and P1:Q10E-HRP.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is a highly contagious swine disease caused by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). PED causes enteric disorders with an exceptionally high fatality in neonates, bringing substantial economic losses in the pork industry. The trimeric spike (S) glycoprotein of PEDV is responsible for virus-host recognition, membrane fusion, and is the main target for vaccine development and antigenic analysis. The atomic structures of the recombinant PEDV S proteins of two different strains have been reported, but they reveal distinct N-terminal domain 0 (D0) architectures that may correspond to different functional states. The existence of the D0 is a unique feature of alphacoronavirus. Here we combined cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to demonstrate in situ the asynchronous S protein D0 motions on intact viral particles of a highly virulent PEDV Pintung 52 strain. We further determined the cryo-EM structure of the recombinant S protein derived from a porcine cell line, which revealed additional domain motions likely associated with receptor binding. By integrating mass spectrometry and cryo-EM, we delineated the complex compositions and spatial distribution of the PEDV S protein N-glycans, and demonstrated the functional role of a key N-glycan in modulating the D0 conformation.

Toxoplasmosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii affects both conservation and public health efforts. In the Taipei Zoo, toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in ring-tailed lemurs and a meerkat in 2019 while a freeze-thaw meat strategy had been applied to carnivores before the event. To investigate the possible risk factors associated with T. gondii infection in the Taipei Zoo, 179 veterinary visiting mammals from 2019-2021 and six stray cats were included to detect anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM in their serum via ELISA, and T. gondii in their faeces and blood via PCR. Although the overall T. gondii IgG seroprevalence was 33.5% and PCR positivity was 16.2% in the zoo mammals, the correlation between T. gondii PCR and systemic IgG results was low. An omnivorous diet (adjusted OR = 0.4; 95% CI: 0.2-1.0), a herbivorous diet (adjusted OR = 3.2; 95% CI: 1.1-9.6), and animals in the Conservation Area where stray cats appeared (adjusted OR = 18.3; 95% CI: 3.9-85.9) were independent risk factors for T. gondii infection. The low T. gondii-specific IgM positivity (0.6%) suggests that most animals did not have acute T. gondii infection. In conclusion, our findings indirectly support that feeding frozen meat to carnivores, cleaning fresh food, and restricting access to stray cats to prevent faecal contaminants could prevent animals from T. gondii exposure.

Uncontrollable bleeding and infection are two of the most common causes of trauma-related death. Yet, developing safe materials with high hemostatic and antibacterial effectiveness remains a challenge. Keratin-based biomaterials have been reported to exhibit the functions of enhancing platelet binding and activating and facilitating fibrinogen polymerization. In this study, we designed a hemostatic material with good biodegradability, biocompatibility, hemostatic ability, and antibacterial function to solve the shortcomings of common hemostatic materials. Methylene blue-loaded keratin/alginate composite scaffolds were prepared by the freeze-gelation method. The composite scaffolds exhibited over 1600% liquid absorption, well-interconnected pores, good biocompatibility, and biodegradability. We find that the keratin/alginate composite scaffolds' synergistic action may significantly reduce hemostasis time. To prevent infection, the drug-loaded scaffolds generated high burst release by absorbing wound exudate in the early stages of wound healing. The results obtained by the antimicrobial photoinactivation assay in vitro suggest that an antimicrobial photodynamic effect might be triggered, thereby preventing the fast growth of colonies.

Hepatopancreatic parvovirus (HPV) and Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) are emerging and reemerging pathogens in shrimps. In the present study, a novel genotype of HPV concurrently infected with EHP in Penaeus vannamei in Taiwan leading to severe atrophy and damage of hepatopancreas were confirmed by histopathology, in situ hybridization, and PCR. The novel genotype of HPV exhibited 66%-69.5% sequence identities with all known HPVs and carried unique amino acid deletions and insertions in the VP gene. According to phylogenetic analysis, the Taiwan HPV isolates were classified as the genotype IV. The present study not only provided the histopathological and molecular proof of HPV and EHP co-infection in Taiwan, but also revealed the importance of investigating the geographical expansion of novel HPV genotypes.
