AIM: To explain the design and delivery of diagnostic imaging and image-guided intervention services for an international games. The authors share their experiences from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was undertaken of anonymised data from the Zillion, Easyvision (RIS and PACS), and Encounter platforms for image viewing, interpretation and reporting during the Games. The data collected included age and gender, type of sport, nature of the injury, and imaging findings with diagnoses. RESULTS: The number of individuals who had radiological investigations at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games was 518 and the vast majority of them were athletes (90 %). The average age of athletes who had imaging was 28 years and that of non-athletes who accessed imaging services was 46.4 years with male predominance. Magnetic resonance imaging was the most frequently used imaging technique and the lower limb was the most frequently imaged body part. Athletes playing netball and beach volleyball had the highest percentage of injuries. CONCLUSION: The authors share their experience from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 regarding the nuances and challenges in radiology service provision for an international sports event that would be helpful for musculoskeletal radiologists in the design and delivery of similar international events in the future.

Here, we report the genome sequences of three bacterial isolates, Kinneretia sp. strain XES5, Shinella sp. strain XGS7, and Vogesella sp. strain XCS3, which were cultured from skin of adult female laboratory-bred Xenopus laevis.

Global peatlands store more carbon than is naturally present in the atmosphere1,2. However, many peatlands are under pressure from drainage-based agriculture, plantation development and fire, with the equivalent of around 3 per cent of all anthropogenic greenhouse gases emitted from drained peatland3-5. Efforts to curb such emissions are intensifying through the conservation of undrained peatlands and re-wetting of drained systems6. Here we report eddy covariance data for carbon dioxide from 16 locations and static chamber measurements for methane from 41 locations in the UK and Ireland. We combine these with published data from sites across all major peatland biomes. We find that the mean annual effective water table depth (WTDe; that is, the average depth of the aerated peat layer) overrides all other ecosystem- and management-related controls on greenhouse gas fluxes. We estimate that every 10 centimetres of reduction in WTDe could reduce the net warming impact of CO2 and CH4 emissions (100-year global warming potentials) by the equivalent of at least 3 tonnes of CO2 per hectare per year, until WTDe is less than 30 centimetres. Raising water levels further would continue to have a net cooling effect until WTDe is within 10 centimetres of the surface. Our results suggest that greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands drained for agriculture could be greatly reduced without necessarily halting their productive use. Halving WTDe in all drained agricultural peatlands, for example, could reduce emissions by the equivalent of over 1 per cent of global anthropogenic emissions.

Skull base osteomyelitis is a relatively rare condition, generally occurring as a complication of advanced otologic or sinus infection in immunocompromised patients. Skull base osteomyelitis is generally divided into 2 broad categories: typical and atypical. Typical skull base osteomyelitis occurs secondary to uncontrolled infection of the temporal bone region, most often from necrotizing external otitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a patient with diabetes. Atypical skull base osteomyelitis occurs in the absence of obvious temporal bone infection or external auditory canal infection. It may be secondary to advanced sinusitis or deep face infection or might occur in the absence of a known local source of infection. Atypical skull base osteomyelitis preferentially affects the central skull base and can be caused by bacterial or fungal infections. Clinically, typical skull base osteomyelitis presents with signs and symptoms of otitis externa or other temporal bone infection. Both typical and atypical forms can produce nonspecific symptoms including headache and fever, and progress to cranial neuropathies and meningitis. Early diagnosis can be difficult both clinically and radiologically, and the diagnosis is often delayed. Radiologic evaluation plays a critical role in the diagnosis of skull base osteomyelitis, with CT and MR imaging serving complementary roles. CT best demonstrates cortical and trabecular destruction of bone. MR imaging is best for determining the overall extent of disease and best demonstrates involvement of marrow space and extraosseous soft tissue. Nuclear medicine studies can also be contributory to diagnosis and follow-up. The goal of this article was to review the basic pathophysiology, clinical findings, and key radiologic features of skull base osteomyelitis.

Afforestation is a significant cause of global peatland degradation. In some regions, afforested bogs are now undergoing clear-felling and restoration, often known as forest-to-bog restoration. We studied differences in water-table depth (WTD) and porewater chemistry between intact, afforested, and restored bogs at a raised bog and blanket bog location. Solute concentrations and principal component analysis suggested that water-table drawdown and higher electrical conductivity (EC) and ammonium (NH4-N) concentrations were associated with afforestation. In contrast, higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and phosphate (PO4-P) concentrations were associated with deforestation. Drying-rewetting cycles influenced seasonal variability in solute concentrations, particularly in shallower porewater at the raised bog location. WTD was significantly deeper in the oldest raised bog restoration site (~9 years post-restoration) than the intact bog (mean difference = 6.2 cm). However, WTD in the oldest blanket bog restoration site (~17 years post-restoration), where furrows had been blocked, was comparable to the intact bog (mean difference = 1.2 cm). When averaged for all porewater depths, NH4-N concentrations were significantly higher in the afforested than the intact sites (mean difference = 0.77 mg L-1) whereas significant differences between the oldest restoration sites and the intact sites included higher PO4-P (mean difference = 70 µg L-1) in the raised bog and higher DOC (mean difference = 5.6 mg L-1), EC (mean difference = 19 µS cm-1) and lower SUVA254 (mean difference = 0.13 L mg-1 m-1) in the blanket bog. Results indicate felled waste (brash) may be a significant source of soluble C and PO4-P. Mean porewater PO4-P concentrations were between two and five times higher in furrows and drains in which brash had accumulated compared to other locations in the same sites where brash had not accumulated. Creating and maintaining brash-free buffer zones may therefore minimise freshwater impacts.

The superfamily Pronocephaloidea Looss, 1899 comprises digeneans occurring in the gut and respiratory organs of fishes, turtles, marine iguanas, birds and mammals. Although many life cycles are known for species of the Notocotylidae Lühe, 1909 maturing in birds and mammals, relatively few are known for the remaining pronocephaloid lineages. We report the cercariae of five pronocephaloid species from marine gastropods of the Queensland coast, Australia. From Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef, we report three cercariae, two from Rhinoclavis vertagus (Cerithiidae) and one from Nassarius coronatus (Nassariidae). From Moreton Bay, southern Queensland, an additional two cercariae are reported from two genotypes of the gastropod worm shell Thylacodes sp. (Vermetidae). Phylogenetic analysis using 28S rRNA gene sequences shows all five species are nested within the Pronocephaloidea, but not matching or particularly close to any previously sequenced taxon. In combination, phylogenetic and ecological evidence suggests that most of these species will prove to be pronocephalids parasitic in marine turtles. The Vermetidae is a new host family for the Pronocephaloidea.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of relapse after discharge from the hospital in dogs with a diagnosis of presumed primary immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, risk factors associated with relapse and whether or not indefinite use of immunosuppressive medication influences risk of relapse. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records from August 2007 through July 2016 were reviewed to identify dogs with a diagnosis of presumed primary immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. Data collection included signalment, initial diagnostic tests, treatment, incidence of relapse, survival duration and follow-up testing. RESULTS: A total of 45 dogs were diagnosed, treated and monitored for at least one year for presumed primary immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. 89â6% of patients survived to discharge and 31% of those experienced a relapse following discharge. The median time from diagnosis to relapse was 79 days. Of dogs that experienced a relapse, 50% had at least one further relapse. There was no difference in age, body weight, gender, breed, platelet count at presentation, nadir packed cell volume during hospitalisation, incidence of melaena or initial treatment between the relapsing and non-relapsing groups. In the relapsing group, time to platelet recovery was significantly longer and these patients were more likely to have received a blood transfusion. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study does not provide evidence to support the use of long-term immunosuppressive medications to prevent relapse. However, the data suggest that patients with more severe disease at the time of diagnosis or that have already experienced a relapse should be monitored more closely.

BACKGROUND: The BRIM-3 trial showed improved progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) for vemurafenib compared with dacarbazine in treatment-naive patients with BRAFV600 mutation-positive metastatic melanoma. We present final OS data from BRIM-3. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned in a 1 : 1 ratio to receive vemurafenib (960 mg twice daily) or dacarbazine (1000 mg/m2 every 3 weeks). OS and PFS were co-primary end points. OS was assessed in the intention-to-treat population, with and without censoring of data for dacarbazine patients who crossed over to vemurafenib. RESULTS: Between 4 January 2010 and 16 December 2010, a total of 675 patients were randomized to vemurafenib (n = 337) or dacarbazine (n = 338, of whom 84 crossed over to vemurafenib). At the time of database lock (14 August 2015), median OS, censored at crossover, was significantly longer for vemurafenib than for dacarbazine {13.6 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 12.0-15.4] versus 9.7 months [95% CI 7.9-12.8; hazard ratio (HR) 0.81 [95% CI 0.67-0.98]; P = 0.03}, as was median OS without censoring at crossover [13.6 months (95% CI 12.0-15.4) versus 10.3 months (95% CI 9.1-12.8); HR 0.81 (95% CI 0.68-0.96); P = 0.01]. Kaplan-Meier estimates of OS rates for vemurafenib versus dacarbazine were 56% versus 46%, 30% versus 24%, 21% versus 19% and 17% versus 16% at 1, 2, 3 and 4 years, respectively. Overall, 173 of the 338 patients (51%) in the dacarbazine arm and 175 of the 337 (52%) of those in the vemurafenib arm received subsequent anticancer therapies, most commonly ipilimumab. Safety data were consistent with the primary analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Vemurafenib continues to be associated with improved median OS in the BRIM-3 trial after extended follow-up. OS curves converged after ≈3 years, likely as a result of crossover from dacarbazine to vemurafenib and receipt of subsequent anticancer therapies. CLINICALTRIALS.GOV: NCT01006980.

Lumbar puncture has, for many years, been the responsibility of the internal medicine physician or the neurologist. As more patients have undergone spine surgery and with the current increase in body mass index of the general population, the radiologist has been consulted with increasing frequency to perform lumbar puncture with fluoroscopic guidance. Radiology, in fact, is now the dominant overall provider of lumbar puncture procedures. The procedure is more difficult when the needle length increases, and if fluoroscopy is used, landmarks are more difficult to visualize with increasing subcutaneous fat. Our goal with this review was to describe our techniques for lumbar puncture in the difficult patient, with emphasis on using fluoroscopy in the obese patient and to suggest maneuvers that might make the procedure easier. Combining our experience from performing these procedures on an obese population, we would like to share our tips, especially with trainees early in their career.

CASE REPORT: A 2-year-old neutered male German Shepherd dog was presented with weakness, poor appetite and weight loss. Glucocorticoid-deficient hypoadrenocorticism was diagnosed with undetectable pre- and post-ACTH cortisol concentrations but normal sodium and potassium concentrations. Despite appropriate supplementation with glucocorticoids, the patient's weakness progressed and neurological deficits developed. The patient was euthanased. Histopathological analysis of multiple organs, including the adrenal glands, showed an accumulation of neoplastic lymphocytes within blood vessels, consistent with a diagnosis of intravascular lymphoma. Histologically, in both adrenal glands, the architecture of the zona fasciculata and reticularis was disrupted by blood vessels congested with a neoplastic population of T-lymphocytes; the zona glomerulosa remained intact. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of intravascular lymphoma causing glucocorticoid-deficient hypoadrenocorticism in a dog.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: To evaluate and compare the diagnostic capability of arthroscopy and ultrasonography for the detection of pathological change in equine stifle joints. Although descriptions of the arthroscopic and ultrasonographic boundaries of the normal femorotibial joint exist, there are few examples in the literature comparing the pathological changes observed with each imaging modality. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare arthroscopic and ultrasonographic examinations for characterising pathological change in the stifle joint. To describe how the results of arthroscopic and ultrasonographic examinations may differ in characterising the severity of lesions and to evaluate which lesions are best assessed with each modality. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of ultrasonographic and arthroscopic examinations. METHODS: The structures of the stifle joint were evaluated and graded for pathological change by scoring arthroscopic and ultrasonographic examinations. The presence and severity of the lesions were then compared between each modality. RESULTS: Medial meniscal lesions were detected more often with ultrasonography than with arthroscopy. Conversely, arthroscopy was better for detection of cranial medial meniscotibial ligament (CrMMTL) tearing. Articular cartilage defects were best detected with arthroscopy and periarticular osteophytes of the medial femoral condyle with ultrasonography. Four cases had defects within one of the patellar ligaments, all of which were only characterised with ultrasonography. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonography and arthroscopy should be combined to best evaluate pathology of the stifle, since each modality has its own limitations depending on the location and type of lesion.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that environmental pollution from an earthquake might be associated with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). AIM: To determine the incidence of AAV during the 3-year period before (period 1), and the 3 years following (period 2), the earthquake that occurred on 22 February 2011 in Christchurch, New Zealand. METHODS: All ANCA tests performed in the Canterbury region for 3 years before the earthquake (period 1, 2007-2010), and for 3 years after the earthquake (period 2, 2011-2014) were examined. AAV was defined according to The European Medicines Agency classification algorithm. Medical records were reviewed and cases were included if they were newly diagnosed within the study period. Incidence was calculated using population data from the 2013 New Zealand census. RESULTS: A total of 52 new cases of AAV was identified. The incidence in period 1 was 1.87/100 000/annum (95% C.I. 1.23-2.72), and for period 2 was 1.73/100 000/annum (95% C.I. 1.12-2.55). There was no statistically significant difference in incidence between the two study periods. There was no difference when analysing by myeloperoxidase (MPO) or proteinase-3 status, or restricting the analyses to those residing in an urban environment. The mean age at diagnosis for MPO AAV was significantly younger in period 2 than period 1 (61 years vs 71 years, P = 0.05). There were no other clinically important differences between the two groups. CONCLUSION: This study does not support the hypothesis that an environmental agent, caused by dust pollution related to earthquake damage, has a causative role in the pathogenesis of AAV.

Sensory analysis of ground LL samples representing 12 beef product categories was conducted in 3 different regions of the U.S. to identify flavor preferences of beef consumers. Treatments characterized production-related flavor differences associated with USDA grade, cattle type, finishing diet, growth enhancement, and postmortem aging method. Consumers (N=307) rated cooked samples for 12 flavors and overall flavor desirability. Samples were analyzed to determine fatty acid content. Volatile compounds produced by cooking were extracted and quantified. Overall, consumers preferred beef that rated high for beefy/brothy, buttery/beef fat, and sweet flavors and disliked beef with fishy, livery, gamey, and sour flavors. Flavor attributes of samples higher in intramuscular fat with greater amounts of monounsaturated fatty acids and lesser proportions of saturated, odd-chain, omega-3, and trans fatty acids were preferred by consumers. Of the volatiles identified, diacetyl and acetoin were most closely correlated with desirable ratings for overall flavor and dimethyl sulfide was associated with an undesirable sour flavor.

Research into anxiety and driving has indicated that those higher in anxiety are potentially more dangerous on the roads. However, simulator findings suggest that conclusions are mixed at best. It is possible that anxiety is becoming confused with fear, which has a focus on more clearly defined sources of threat from the environment, as opposed to the internal, thought-related process associated with anxiety. This research aimed to measure feelings of fear, as well as physiological and attentional reactions to increasing levels of accident risk. Trait anxiety was also measured to see if it interacted with levels of risk or its associated reactions. Participants watched videos of driving scenarios with varying levels of accident risk and had to rate how much fear they would feel if they were the driver of the car, whilst skin conductance, heart rate, and eye movements were recorded. Analysis of the data suggested that perceptions of fear increased with increasing levels of accident risk, and skin conductance reflected this pattern. Eye movements, when considered alongside reaction times, indicated different patterns of performance according to different dangerous situations. These effects were independent of trait anxiety, which was only associated with higher rates of disliking driving and use of maladaptive coping mechanisms on questionnaires. It is concluded that these results could provide useful evidence in support for training-based programmes; it may also be beneficial to study trait anxiety within a more immersive driving environment and on a larger scale.

Peatlands are important sources of fluvial carbon. Previous research has shown that riverine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations are largely controlled by soil type. However, there has been little work to establish the controls of riverine DOC within blanket peatlands that have not undergone major disturbance from drainage or burning. A total of 119 peatland catchments were sampled for riverine DOC and water colour across three drainage basins during six repeated sampling campaigns. The topographic characteristics of each catchment were determined from digital elevation models. The dominant vegetation cover was mapped using 0.5m resolution colour infrared aerial images, with ground-truthed validation revealing 82% accuracy. Forward and backward stepwise regression modelling showed that mean slope was a strong (and negative) determinant of DOC and water colour in blanket peatland river waters. There was a weak role for plant functional type in determining DOC and water colour. At the basin scale, there were major differences between the models depending on the basin. The dominance of topographic predictors of DOC found in our study, combined with a weaker role of vegetation type, paves the way for developing improved planning tools for water companies operating in peatland catchments. Using topographic data and aerial imagery it will be possible to predict which tributaries will typically yield lower DOC concentrations and which are therefore more suitable and cost-effective as raw water intakes.

Currently there is little research into the relationship between emotion and driving in the context of advertising and distraction. Research that has looked into this also has methodological limitations that could be affecting the results rather than emotional processing (Trick et al., 2012). The current study investigated the relationship between image valence and risk perception, eye movements and physiological reactions. Participants watched hazard perception clips which had emotional images from the international affective picture system overlaid onto them. They rated how hazardous or safe they felt, whilst eye movements, galvanic skin response and heart rate were recorded. Results suggested that participants were more aware of potential hazards when a neutral image had been shown, in comparison to positive and negative valenced images; that is, participants showed higher subjective ratings of risk, larger physiological responses and marginally longer fixation durations when viewing a hazard after a neutral image, but this effect was attenuated after emotional images. It appears that emotional images reduce sensitivity to potential hazards, and we suggest that future studies could apply these findings to higher fidelity paradigms such as driving simulators.

A retrospective study was carried out to provide updated knowledge of the spatial pattern of Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in Southern England and to investigate associations between selected host characteristics (age, breed, sex), risk of infection and clinical presentation (cardiorespiratory signs v haemorrhagic diathesis). One hundred and forty-one cases diagnosed between April 1999 and July 2012 were compared with a control population of dogs referred to the same hospital. A significant association was found between haemorrhagic diathesis and breed but not for other host characteristics and clinical presentations. Younger dogs and certain breeds of dog (Jack Russell terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, Cavalier King Charles spaniels and Staffordshire Bull Terriers) had significantly higher odds of angiostrongylosis than other breeds in the study. A significant cluster of cases was found in Southern England. Animals presenting with cardiorespiratory signs or haemorrhagic diathesis in Southern England, especially if they are young or of a breed associated with angiostrongylosis, should be given special consideration with regards to possible A. vasorum infestation. Our results should be interpreted bearing in mind that they are based on the retrospective exploration of dogs seen at a referral centre.

Feline upper respiratory tract aspergillosis (URTA) occurs as two distinct anatomical forms, namely, sino-nasal aspergillosis (SNA) and sino-orbital aspergillosis (SOA). An emerging pathogen, Aspergillus felis, is frequently involved. The pathogenesis of URTA, in particular the relationship between the infecting isolate and outcome, is poorly understood. In this study, computed tomography was used to investigate the route of fungal infection and extension in 16 cases (SNA n = 7, SOA n = 9) where the infecting isolate had been identified by molecular testing. All cases had nasal cavity involvement except for one cat with SNA that had unilateral frontal sinus changes. There was a strong association between the infecting species and anatomic form (P = 0.005). A. fumigatus infections remained within the sino-nasal cavity, while cryptic species infections were associated with orbital and paranasal soft-tissue involvement and with orbital lysis. Cryptic species were further associated with a mass in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses or nasopharynx. Orbital masses showed heterogeneous contrast enhancement, with central coalescing hypoattenuating foci and peripheral rim enhancement. Severe, cavitated turbinate lysis, typical of canine SNA, was present only in cats with SNA. These findings support the hypothesis that the nasal cavity is the portal of entry for fungal spores in feline URTA and that the route of extension to involve the orbit is via direct naso-orbital communication from bone lysis. Additionally, a pathogenic role for A. wyomingensis and a sinolith in a cat with A. udagawae infection are reported for the first time.

British × Continental steers (initial BW = 484.6 kg) were fed at a commercial feed yard to evaluate the effects of ß-agonists on live performance, carcass characteristics, and carcass subprimal yield. Weights and ultrasonic measurements were used to allocate steers to pens (n = 40) divided equally into 4 blocks, with 2 treatment replicates per block. Pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 5 treatments: control; ractopamine-HCl (RH) fed at 200 or 300 mg ⢠steer(-1) ⢠d(-1), or 400 mg ⢠steer(-1) ⢠d(-1) top dress for the final 30 d of feeding; or zilpaterol-HCl (ZH) fed at 7.5 mg/kg beginning 23 d before slaughter with a 3-d withdrawal period. Steers were harvested by block at a commercial facility over 4 wk. Carcass based performance measures were calculated using initial pen weights and actual DMI. From each pen, eight carcasses that were within ± 13.6 kg of the mean pen HCW were selected such that two carcasses were within each of the following four Yield Grade (YG) ranges: YG ≤ 2.8; 2.9-3.2; 3.3-3.5; YG > 3.5. Carcasses were fabricated by plant personnel to determine subprimal yield. Steers fed ZH had higher carcass-based ADG and carcass-based G:F compared with all other treatments (P < 0.05). Carcass-based ADG and carcass-based G:F were higher in RH treatments compared with controls (P < 0.05). Steers fed ZH had higher dressing percentages (1.0 to 1.6%) and larger LM area (4.3 to 6.7 cm(2)) than all other treatments (P < 0.05). Use of RH 400 and ZH increased HCW 6.3 and 11.1 kg, respectively compared with controls (P < 0.05). Compared with controls, RH 300 and ZH decreased marbling score and the frequency of carcasses qualifying for upper 2/3 Choice premiums (P < 0.05). Beta-agonists increased subprimal yield from the round and loin; however, blade meat was the only cut from the rib or chuck affected by ß-agonists. Results from this study indicated improvements in performance and carcass traits as a result of ß-agonist use; however, differences between ZH, RH 400, and RH 300 treatments were minimal for carcass traits and cutability. Increases in saleable yield following ß-agonist use were not uniformly distributed across the four major primals and the majority of weight gain occurred in the lower priced cuts of the round and chuck. Increased response of the lower priced cuts to ß-agonists could have economic implications to packers.

The effect of ractopamine hydrochloride (RH) and zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) on slice shear force (SSF) and sensory characteristics of beef from calf-fed Holstein steers was evaluated. All steers were implanted with a progesterone (100 mg) plus estradiol benzoate (10 mg) implant followed by a terminal trenbolone acetate (200 mg) plus estradiol (40 mg) implant. Steers were blocked by weight into pens (n = 32) randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: control, RH fed at 300 mg·steer(-1)·d(-1) (RH 300) or RH fed at 400 mg·steer(-1)·d(-1)(RH 400) for the final 31 d of finishing, or ZH fed at 6.8 g/t for 21 d with a 5-d withdrawal before harvest. Fourteen carcasses were randomly selected from each pen, and two LM samples (1 per side) were excised and aged either 14 or 21 d before SSF testing. For trained panel evaluation, two steaks were collected from each of 60 low Choice strip loins (20 each from control, RH 300, and ZH treatments) and aged either 14 or 21 d. Steers fed RH and ZH produced steaks with SSF values that were 9% to 25% higher than controls. No difference in SSF was detected between the two levels of RH (P > 0.05). Compared to controls, the probability of steaks aged 14 d failing to meet SSF requirements to be certified tender (SSF < 20 kg) was increased 0.15, 0.17, and 0.26 in steers fed RH 300, RH 400, and ZH, respectively. Compared to controls, the probability of steaks aged 21 d having SSF values >20 kg was increased 0.03, 0.08, and 0.16 in steers fed RH 300, RH 400, and ZH, respectively. Steaks from Select carcasses of steers fed ZH aged 21 d postmortem had double the probability (0.39 vs. 0.17) of having SSF values >20 kg compared to steaks from steers fed either level of RH (P < 0.05). This difference tended to be identical in steaks from Select carcasses 14 d postmortem (0.50 vs. 0.33; P = 0.11); however, no difference was found in low Choice samples at 14 or 21 d postmortem. Trained panelists rated steaks aged 14 d from steers fed ZH lower for overall tenderness and flavor compared to controls (P < 0.05); however, no difference was found between controls and those fed RH 300. Steaks from steers fed ZH aged 21 d were rated lower for overall tenderness and juiciness compared to controls and those from steers fed RH 300 (P < 0.05). This study suggests RH and ZH negatively impact sensory attributes of beef from calf-fed Holstein steers.
