The authors recommend berberine bisulfate for use as thrombocytopoiesis stimulator in thrombocytopenias as they have found secondary therapeutic property of this drug--to increase platelet count in patients with primary and secondary thrombocytopenia. The drug was given as monotherapy and in combined treatment 3 times a day for 15 days in a dose 5 mg 20 min before meals.

Six to nine months (7.2 months, on the average) after injection of 198Au into large joints of patients with rheumatoid arthritis there was a decrease of blood thrombophilia characteristics of these patients and refractory to correction with conventional remedies. Functional activity of platelets and fibrinolysis studies were the most sensitive laboratory tests enabling one to reveal the lowering of the patients' blood thrombogenic potential after radionuclide therapy. Comparison of the time-course of changes in these parameters with those of the immunological blood status of the treated patients forms the basis for suggestions that the coagulologic laboratory tests may be used for estimating the efficacy of the treatment carried out.

Parameters of functional status of the hemostatic system were studied in 76 breast and lung cancer patients in the course of radiotherapy using TTC-10 hypoxic gas mixture (oxygen--10% and nitrogen--90%) as radioprotector. The thrombophilic status of the blood in breast and lung cancer patients established prior to treatment was accounted for by increased functional activity of platelets, increased capillary blood coagulability, formation of dense clot and inhibition of fibrinolysis. In the course of hypoxyradiotherapy, blood thrombogeneity becomes lower due to a decrease in platelet adhesion.

The use of small doses of metronidazole (90 mg/kg) for 7 days followed by irradiation of the rat hip at a dose of 66 Gy, increased 1.7 times cicatrization at the site of radiation injuries in comparison with the control group of animals.

Indices of platelet function, plasmic coagulation and fibrinolysis were studied during gamma-beam therapy in patients with laryngeal, gastric and cervical tumors (potentially at risk for thrombosis) against a background of metronidazole administration. During the above therapy the thrombophilic status of gastric cancer patients was preserved. These patients were considered at risk for thrombosis. In patients with laryngeal and cervical cancer platelet capacity to adhesion was considerably reduced during radiotherapy with the use of metronidazole. As a result of it the thrombogenic blood potential and danger of intravascular thrombogenesis were decreased.

Platelet functional activity, plasma coagulation and fibrinolysis were studied in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) against a background of various therapeutic modalities. Therapy with non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents resulted in an increase in platelet and plasma coagulating activity and inhibition of fibrinolysis. An insignificant rise of disaggregation of platelet aggregates was noted 2 weeks after intraarticular administration of 198Au against a background of therapy with non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents. Mydocalm incorporated in a dose of 1-2 mg/kg in the therapeutic scheme did not change significantly blood coagulation indices.

A study was made of the functional activity of platelets, plasmatic coagulation and fibrinolysis in patients with late radiation disorders of the blood and lymph flow during treatment with vasodilative drugs: nicotinic acid and midocalm. These drugs tend to decrease the functional activity of platelets and to raise the blood fibrinolytic activity. Their use is indicated to this group of patients to better their intravascular status.

The blood of 100 health humans aged 18 to 40 years was analysed. The aggregation of platelets and blood fibrinolytic activity were shown to change within 23-day physical cycle according to Swoboda and Fliess. In the negative phase the platelets count, their aggregation, desaggregation process and blood fibrinolytic activity were higher than in the positive one. No substantial differences in platelets aggregation and blood fibrinolytic activity were found during the positive and negative phases of the emotional or intellectual cycles.
