To investigate the association of systemic inflammation index (SII) with psoriasis risk and psoriasis severity. This is a retrospective cohort study based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database from 2009 to 2014. The psoriasis information was obtained from the questionnaire data, and the SII was calculated as neutrophilâ ×â platelet/lymphocyte. We performed matching by controlling age and gender to reach a 1:2 ratio for better statistical power. Weighted logistic regression analysis, subgroup analysis, restricted cubic spline analysis, and threshold analysis were used to evaluate the association of SII with psoriasis risk. Besides, mediation analysis was conducted to assess the possible regulatory path. Finally, the receiver operating characteristic curve was plotted to analyze the predictive value of SII for psoriasis severity. The study involved 16,466 participants including 16,020 no-psoriasis participants and 446 psoriasis participants. After matching, psoriasis and non-psoriasis individuals were 446 and 892, respectively. SII was significantly higher in the psoriasis group than the non-psoriasis group (Pâ <â .05). Additionally, white blood cells and monocytes were significantly linked to psoriasis risk and SII scores (Pâ <â .05). Besides, SII elevation was an independent predictor for upregulated psoriasis risk (Pâ <â .05). There was a nonlinear relationship between SII and psoriasis risk (P nonlinearâ <â .05), which was not mediated by white blood cells and monocytes. Unexpectedly, SII had no significance in predicting SII severity (Pâ >â .05). SII can independently predict psoriasis risk but has no impact on psoriasis severity. Further, SII serves as a potential and robust biomarker for identifying high-risk psoriasis individuals.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate recombinant human endostatin (rHE)-induced normalization of the tumor vasculature in colorectal cancer (CRC) and to evaluate the therapeutic effects of combined treatment with rHE and a programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) inhibitor. Methods: A mouse subcutaneous tumorigenesis model was established to evaluate the antitumor effects of endostatin combined with a PD-L1 inhibitor on CRC. Intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (IVIM-DW MRI) was used to evaluate changes in the intratumor microcirculation in response to combined treatment with endostatin and a PD-L1 inhibitor. The infiltration density and function of CD8+ T cells in tumors were evaluated using flow cytometry. Finally, clinical specimens were used to evaluate the expression area of tumor vascular pericytes and CD8+ T cells in tumor tissues. Results: The antitumor effects of endostatin combined with a PD-L1 inhibitor were significantly greater than those of endostatin or a PD-L1 inhibitor alone. On the ninth day of intervention, the endostatin group showed significantly higher pseudo diffusion parameter (D*) and microvascular volume fraction (F) values in tumors than those in the control group or PD-L1 group. After 27 days of intervention, the endostatin groups showed significantly lower levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß than those in the control group. Treatment of CD8+ T cells with endostatin for 24 h did not alter the expression levels of markers of reduced T-cell activity. However, endostatin reversed the VEGF-mediated inhibition of the secretion of interferon (IFN)-γ from T cells. The results in CRC clinical samples showed that treatment with endostatin induced significantly higher infiltration of CD8+ T cells compared with treatment that did not include endostatin. Furthermore, the expression area of pericytes was significantly positively related to the infiltration density of CD8+ T cells and overall survival time. Conclusion: Endostatin improved the antitumor effects of PD-L1 inhibitors on CRC, significantly increased the activity of CD8+ T cells, and synergistically improved the tumor treatment effect of the two inhibitors.

Background: Genetic variants in GARP (also known as LRRC32) have been reported to have significant associations with asthma and eczema in special populations, but little is known about allergic rhinitis. This study purposes to evaluate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in GARP with house dust mite (HDM)-sensitized persistent allergic rhinitis (PER) in a population of Han Chinese. Methods: In this hospital-based case-control study, 534 HDM-sensitized PER patients and 451 healthy controls were recruited from East China. In this population, six SNPs in GARP were identified. Serum total and specific IgE levels were measured with ImmunoCAP. Secondary structure and minimum free energy were predicted by RNAfold. Results: rs79525962 was associated with the risk of HDM-sensitized PER (P < 0.05). The individuals with CT+TT genotype demonstrated a higher risk of HDM-sensitized PER than those with CC genotype (adjusted ORâ=â1.393, 95% CIâ=â1.019-1.904). The homozygous genotype CC of rs3781699 rendered a lower risk of HDM-sensitized PER than the wild-type genotype AA (adjusted ORâ=â0.646, 95% CIâ=â0.427-0.976); however, the genotype and allele frequencies of rs3781699 demonstrated no associations with HDM-sensitized PER (P > 0.05). rs79525962 increased the risk of HDM-sensitized PER in the subgroup aged ≥16 years (adjusted ORâ=â1.745, 95% CIâ=â1.103-2.760), and this high risk was also found in the females (adjusted ORâ=â1.708, 95% CIâ=â1.021-2.856). The G-C haplotype of rs1320646-rs3781699 rendered a lower risk of HDM-sensitized PER than the common haplotype G-A (adjusted ORâ=â0.819, 95% CIâ=â0.676-0.993). The secondary structure of GARP altered in response to different genotypes of rs79525962 and rs3781699. Conclusion: SNP rs79525962 in the GARP gene marks a risk locus of HDM-sensitized PER in Chinese Hans.

Purpose: The present study was carried out to investigate the global m6A-modified RNA pattern and possible mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of keloid. Method: In total, 14 normal skin and 14 keloid tissue samples were first collected on clinics. Then, three samples from each group were randomly selected to be verified with the Western blotting to determine the level of methyltransferase and demethylase. The total RNA of all samples in each group was isolated and subjected to the analysis of MeRIP sequencing and RNA sequencing. Using software of MeTDiff and htseq-count, the m6A peaks and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were determined within the fold change >2 and p-value < 0.05. The top 10 pathways of m6A-modified genes in each group and the differentially expressed genes were enriched by the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes signaling pathways. Finally, the closely associated pathway was determined using the Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining. Results: There was a higher protein level of WTAP and Mettl3 in the keloid than in the normal tissue. In the keloid samples, 21,020 unique m6A peaks with 6,573 unique m6A-associated genetic transcripts appeared. In the normal tissue, 4,028 unique m6A peaks with 779 m6A-associated modified genes appeared. In the RNA sequencing, there were 847 genes significantly changed between these groups, transcriptionally. The genes with m6A-methylated modification and the upregulated differentially expressed genes between two tissues were both mainly related to the Wnt signaling pathway. Moreover, the hyper-m6A-modified Wnt/ß-catenin pathway in keloid was verified with Western blotting. From the immunofluorescence staining results, we found that the accumulated fibroblasts were under a hyper-m6A condition in the keloid, and the Wnt/ß-Catenin signaling pathway was mainly activated in the fibroblasts. Conclusion: The fibroblasts in the keloid were under a cellular hyper-m6A-methylated condition, and the hyper-m6A-modified highly expressed Wnt/ß-catenin pathway in the dermal fibroblasts might promote the pathogenesis of keloid.

Objective: To investigate the effects and mechanisms of Astragalus polysaccharide on improving imiquimod-induced psoriasiform dermatitis in mice. Methods: Forty healthy female C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into 5 groups, including blank control group, model group, astragalus polysaccharide high-dose group (200 mg/kg), medium-dose group (100 mg/kg) and low-dose group (50 mg/kg), with 8 mice in each group. The mice in model group and astragalus polysaccharide treatment group were treated with 5% imiquimod cream on the back to induce psoriasiform dermatitis. PASI score was monitored, and the secretion of inflammatory factors was determined by ELISA. The secretion of inflammatory factors was closely related to the infiltration of macrophages. The infiltration of macrophages in skin was detected by flow cytometry to further explore the effect of different concentrations of APS on psoriasis. Results: Compared with control group, the PASI score and the serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 were increased significantly (Pï¼0.05), and the infiltration of macrophages in skin tissue was increased significantly in model group (Pï¼0.05). Compared with model group, the PASI score was decreased significantly (Pï¼0.05), and the serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 were down-regulated significantly in astragalus polysaccharide high-dose and medium-dose groups (Pï¼0.05). The infiltrating macrophages in skin tissue were decreased significantly in Astragalus polysaccharide high-dose group (Pï¼0.05). Conclusion: Astragalus polysaccharide improve psoriasiform dermatitis in mice by inhibiting the infiltration of macrophages in skin tissue and decreasing the secretion of TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 in serum.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a nasal inflammatory disease resulting from a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. The association between Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling pathway and environmental factors in AR pathogenesis remains to be explored. This study aims to assess the genetic association of AR with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TLR signaling pathway, and investigate the roles of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions in AR. Methods: A total of 452 AR patients and 495 healthy controls from eastern China were enrolled in this hospital-based case-control study. We evaluated putatively functional genetic polymorphisms in TLR2, TLR4 and CD14 genes for their association with susceptibility to AR and related clinical phenotypes. Interactions between environmental factors (such as traffic pollution, residence, pet keeping) and polymorphisms with AR were examined using logistic regression. Models were stratified by genotype and interaction terms, and tested for the significance of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions. Results: In the single-locus analysis, two SNPs in CD14, rs2563298 (A/C) and rs2569191 (C/T) were associated with a significantly decreased risk of AR. Compared with the GG genotype, the GT and GT/TT genotypes of TLR2 rs7656411 (G/T) were associated with a significantly increased risk of AR. Gene-gene interactions (eg, TLR2 rs7656411, TLR4 rs1927914, and CD14 rs2563298) was associated with AR. Gene-environment interactions (eg, TLR4 or CD14 polymorphisms and certain environmental exposures) were found in AR cases, but they were not significant after Bonferroni correction. Conclusion: The genetic polymorphisms of TLR2 and CD14 and gene-gene interactions in TLR signaling pathway were associated with susceptibility to AR in this Han Chinese population. However, the present results were limited to support the association between gene-environment interactions and AR.

BACKGROUND: The polymorphisms inside microRNA target sites locating in the 3'-UTR region may introduce the micro-RNA-binding changes, which may regulate the gene expression and correlate with the potential diseases. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate whether the polymorphisms in microRNA target sites of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß) signaling pathway genes are associated with the susceptibility of mite-sensitized allergic rhinitis (AR) in a Han Chinese population. METHODS: In this case-control study, 454 AR patients and 448 healthy controls were recruited. Three HapMap single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were mapped to putative microRNA recognition sites and genotyped by TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. RESULTS: The genotype and allele frequencies of 3 SNPs (rs1590 in TGFBR1; rs1434536 and rs17023107 in BMPR1B) showed lack of significant association with AR. However, in the subgroup analysis, the TG, GG, and TG/GG genotypes of rs1590 exhibited significantly increased risk of AR in the male subgroup (TG: adjusted OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.08-2.31; GG: adjusted OR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.09-2.86; TG/GG: adjusted OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.13-2.33). The CT genotypes of rs17023107 might have potential to protect against AR in the patients age of <15 years (adjusted OR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.14-0.95) and the males (adjusted OR = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.25-0.95). No significant association was found between SNPs and the total serum IgE level. CONCLUSIONS: In a Han Chinese population, stratified by age and gender, susceptibility to mite-sensitized AR may be associated with 2 SNPs (rs1590 and rs17023107) in microRNA target sites of TGF-ß signaling pathway genes.

BACKGROUND: Polymorphism -509C/T in the promoter of transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFB1) gene is implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma. This polymorphism might also act to regulate the development of allergic rhinitis (AR). OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether -509C/T is associated with AR susceptibility and severity in a Han Chinese population. METHODS: The study enrolled 263 patients with persistent AR and 249 healthy controls. AR patients were classified as mild or moderate/severe AR groups according to the Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma classification. TGFB1 gene polymorphism -509C/T was genotyped with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Serum total Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and specific IgE levels were determined using an ImmunoCAP. RESULTS: Significant difference was found in the allele frequency of TGFB1 -509C/T between AR patients and healthy controls (P = .027) but not in the genotype frequency (P =.051). However, the genotype frequency of TGFB1 -509C/T showed significant difference between the mild AR group, the moderate/severe AR group, and the control group (P = .012); between the moderate/severe AR group and the control group (P =.036); between the mild AR group and the moderate/severe AR group (P = .038); but not between the mild AR group and the control group (P =.075). CONCLUSION: TGFB1 promoter polymorphism -509C/T may be associated with the susceptibility and the severity of persistent AR of Han Chinese, but the functional relationship still needs clarification.

As recent studies have described an association between vitamin D and allergic rhinitis, we hypothesized that vitamin D pathway-related genes may be candidate genes for susceptibility to allergic rhinitis. Thus, we sought to evaluate whether polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and CYP2R1 genes are associated with mite-sensitized persistent allergic rhinitis (PER) in a Han Chinese population. A hospital-based case-control study consisting of 519 patients with mite-sensitized PER and 447 healthy controls was conducted. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in VDR and CYP2R1 were selected for genotyping. The genotype and allele frequencies of rs9729, rs2228570, rs1544410, and rs731236 in VDR as well as rs2060793 in CYP2R1 were not significantly associated with susceptibility to mite-sensitized PER. After stratification analyses, however, both the CT and CT/TT genotypes of rs2228570 in VDR exhibited a significantly decreased risk (CT: adjusted odds ratio (OR)=0.58, 95% confidence intervals (CI)=0.37-0.91; CT/TT: adjusted OR=0.61, 95% CI=0.40-0.93) of mite-sensitized PER, while the AA genotype of rs2060793 in CYP2R1 exhibited a significantly increased risk (adjusted OR=1.85, 95% CI=1.03-3.34) of PER in the age subgroup of <16 years old. Both the AG and AG/GG genotypes of rs731236 in VDR exhibited a significantly decreased risk (AG: adjusted OR=0.43, 95% CI=0.21-0.89; AG/GG: adjusted OR=0.46, 95% CI=0.23-0.94) of PER in the female subgroup. Analysis of the locus-locus interactions of VDR and CYP2R1 revealed two models that involved combined SNPs of VDR and CYP2R1 were statistically significant (P<0.05). Our data suggest that age and gender may have an impact on the association of three SNPs (rs2228570, rs731236, and rs2060793) in genes of the vitamin D pathway with the risk of mite-sensitized PER in this Chinese population. The VDR and CYP2R1 variants may be involved in genetic interactions in the pathogenesis of PER.

BACKGROUND: The ADAM33 gene has been identified as a potentially important asthma candidate gene and polymorphisms in this gene have been shown to be associated with asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the ADAM33 polymorphisms are associated with persistent allergic rhinitis (PER) due to house dust mites in a Chinese population. METHODS: In a hospital-based case-control study of 515 patients with mite-sensitized PER and 495 healthy controls, we genotyped seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ADAM33. Serum levels of eosinophil cationic protein, total IgE and allergen-specific IgE against Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae were measured by the ImmunoCAP assays. RESULTS: In the single-locus analysis, three polymorphisms, rs3918392 (F1), rs528557 (S2) and rs2787093, were significantly associated with mite-sensitized PER. SNP S2 was associated with significantly increased risk both of asthmatic and nonasthmatic mite-sensitized PER. In the combined genotypes analysis, individuals with 2-4 risk alleles had a significantly higher risk of mite-sensitized PER (adjusted ORâ=â1.99, 95% CIâ=â1.50-2.62) than those with 0-1 risk alleles. Haplotype-based association analysis revealed that the ACAGCCT haplotype might have potential to protect against mite-sensitized PER (adjusted ORâ=â0.67; 95% CIâ=â0.49-0.90). CONCLUSIONS: Polymorphisms in the ADAM33 gene may contribute to susceptibility of mite-sensitized PER in this Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationships between the severity of childhood allergic rhinitis (AR) and the peripheral blood eosinophil count, serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), total IgE (tIgE), and allergen-specific IgE (sIgE) levels. METHODS: A total of 138 children with AR aged 3 to 17 (9.96 ± 3.78, x() ± s) years old were enrolled in the study. All children had persistent AR sensitized to house dust mites with a clinical history of 3 months to 12 (4.21 ± 2.72) years. The disease severity was evaluated using 10 cm-visual analogue scale (VAS), and the serum levels of ECP, tIgE and sIgE were determined using an ImmunoCAP system. Statistical analysis was conducted with SPSS11.0 software. RESULTS: Among 138 children with AR, the VAS scores for global severity of rhinitis and nasal obstruction symptom were 5.32 ± 2.16 and 4.78 ± 2.45, respectively. Blood eosinophil count was 0.39 [0.24; 0.63] (M[P(25); P(75)]) ×10(9)/ml. Serum levels of ECP and total IgE were 10.60 [3.26; 30.80] µg/L and (2.50 ± 0.53) log kU/L, respectively. Serum levels of allergen-sIgE against Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae were 58.20[24.75; > 100] kUA/L and 54.95 [24.55; > 100] kUA/L, respectively. The VAS scores of nasal obstruction symptom, but not global severity of rhinitis, were positively related to the duration of AR (r = 0.215, P = 0.011) and the levels of serum ECP (r = 0.196, P = 0.022) in bivariate correlation analysis. There was also a significant correlation between the serum ECP level and the blood eosinophil count (r = 0.295, P = 0.000). No relationships of blood eosinophil count, and serum tIgE and sIgE levels with global severity of rhinitis as well as nasal obstruction symptom were found (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that the severity of nasal obstruction was positively correlated with the duration of rhinitis and the levels of serum ECP in childhood persistent AR due to house dust mites, indicating the disease severity might be related to chronic inflammatory process.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze and compare the differences of clinical characteristics and comorbidities between patients with non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) and allergic rhinitis (AR). METHODS: A total of 556 out-patients were enrolled from January 2010 to June 2011. The chief complaints of the patients included at least two of the following nasal symptoms: nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal itching. Based on the results of the disease history, physical examination and allergen skin prick test, the patients were classified into NAR group (n = 206) and AR group (n = 350). Detailed information including general data, nasal symptoms and signs, accompanied symptoms and comorbidities were obtained by questionnaires. A scoring was adopted to estimate the severity of disease. SPSS 13.0 software was applied for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The mean age of NAR patients (31.8 ± 16.7) was older than that of AR patients (26.3 ± 14.8), and the difference was significant (t = 4.01, P = 0.0001). While there was no significant difference on gender distribution between two groups (χ² = 0.12, P = 0.73). The percentage of nasal congestion was not significantly different between NAR and AR patients (89.8% and 92.0%, respectively; χ² = 0.26, P = 0.611). However, the symptoms of rhinorrhea, sneezing, nasal itching, eyes itching, lachrymation, wheeze and cough were more popular in AR patients than those in NAR patients (all P < 0.05). Moreover, above symptoms (except cough) were more serious in AR patients, and the symptom scores were significantly higher than those in NAR patients (all P < 0.05). Most of patients with NAR (67.0%) and AR (62.9%) were moderate-severe persistent (χ² = 1.25, P = 0.264). Accompanied asthma were more common in patients with AR (12.6%) compared with NAR (2.4%), while hypertension were more common in patients with NAR (7.3%) compared with AR (1.7%), and the differences were significant (both P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: NAR and AR are two different disease entities, which have different clinical characteristics, as well as different comorbidities. Further clinical study should be done on the rhinitis phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: The IL4, IL13, and IL4 receptor α chain (IL4RA) genes are candidate genes for atopic diseases. We hypothesized that the polymorphisms in these genes are associated with persistent allergic rhinitis (PER). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of the potential functional polymorphisms in IL4, IL13, and IL4RA with PER induced by house dust mites in a Chinese population. METHODS: Using the TaqMan method, we genotyped six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) including C-590T in IL4, C-1055T and Arg130Gln in IL13, and Ile50Val, Ser478Pro and Gln551Arg in IL4RA, in a case-control study of 265 patients with PER and 275 healthy controls. RESULTS: We found that the CT/CC genotypes in IL4 C-590T were associated with a significantly decreased risk of mite-sensitized PER [adjusted odds ratio (OR) â=â0.64, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.45-0.92], compared to the TT genotype. Furthermore, PER patients with CT/CC genotypes had significantly lower serum levels of total IgE than those with TT genotype (Pâ=â0.001). However, there was no significant association of the IL13 and IL4RA polymorphisms with mite-sensitized PER (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the C-590T polymorphism in IL4 may contribute to the susceptibility to mite-sensitized PER in a Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with standardized house dust mite (HDM) extract for persistent allergic rhinitis (PER). METHODS: Ninety-eight patients with moderate to severe PER caused by HDM and who completed SCIT (Alutard SQ, ALK-Abell¨®) or SLIT (Chanllergen-Df drops, Wolwo Pharma) regimen for two years were enrolled in this open-label controlled study. The patients were divided into two groups: SCIT group consisted of 40 patients aged 7 to 57 years old [(19.0 ± 2.7) years, x(-) ± s], and SLIT group consisted of 58 patients aged 6 to 50 years old [(17.7 ± 3.2) years]. The nasal symptoms (sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction and pruritus) were evaluated using a four-point rating scale (from 0 = absent to 3 = severe) as well as 10 cm-visual analogue scale (VAS). Efficacy of SCIT and SLIT was assessed as the mean change from baseline in nasal symptom scores after 2-year course of immunotherapy, and the results were compared. SAS software version 9.1.3 was applied for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Both SCIT and SLIT significantly reduced the individual symptom score of sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction and pruritus, and the total nasal symptom scores (including 4-point scale and VAS) after 2-year treatment when compared with the baseline (Z value were -3.14, -3.76, -3.09, -3.48, -4.13; -3.63, -3.21, -2.48, -3.56, -3.98, respectively, all P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in decreased mean score of the individual and total nasal symptoms (4-point scale) between SCIT and SLIT groups (Z value were -0.97, -0.67, -0.36, -0.04, -0.67, respectively, all P > 0.05). However, a significant reduction of VAS score of nasal obstruction was found in SCIT group after 2-year treatment, compared with SLIT group (t = -2.21, P = 0.032). There was no significant difference in decreased VAS score of three other nasal symptoms as well as global rhinitis severity between two immunotherapy groups (t value were -0.57, -1.93, -1.73, -0.99, respectively, all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both SCIT and SLIT demonstrated clinical improvement in moderate to severe PER patients sensitized to HDM after two years treatment. It is suggested that SCIT may relieve nasal obstruction significantly; however, the overall clinical efficacy is consistent with SCIT and SLIT.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and describe the differences in age, sex, seasonality distribution, and related environmental factors between patients with non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) and allergic rhinitis (AR). METHODS: One hundred and eleven patients with NAR and 112 patients with AR were enrolled in this study. All patients were first diagnosed in outpatient department between January and August 2010. Questionnaires were distributed to all participants to record the general information, medical history, and the factors relevant to symptom onset. Statistical analysis was performed using a SPSS13.0 software. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with NAR increased with age, compared to patients with AR. The peak age was 21 - 30 years old in patients with NAR, whereas 11 - 20 years old in patients with AR. In adults more than 18 years old, the average age (years, x(-) ± s) of patients with NAR (38.6 ± 14.5) was significantly higher than those with AR (32.8 ± 13.0; t = 2.58, P = 0.024). NAR was more likely to be males before 30 years old, while after 30 years old, it likely to be female predominance. The same case occurred in AR subjects but in their 20 years old. NAR was symptomatically worse in winter (χ(2) = 27.57, P = 0.000), whereas AR worse in spring (χ(2) = 13.75, P = 0.003). The cases of NAR were significantly more than those of AR during the winter season (χ(2) = 12.34, P = 0.000). Among the disease-related environmental factors, living or working place near the traffic artery had 1.94-fold increased risk for development of NAR compared with AR; however, living or working in ground floor or sunshine time less than 2 h per day had 1.77- or 1.91-fold increased risk for development of NAR compared with NAR. Subjects with personal or family history of allergic disease had 2.14 to 4.06-fold increased risk for development of AR compared with NAR. The self-reported predisposing factors in NAR patients were mainly including temperature shift (56.3%), common cold (52.8%), climate change (32.4%), and strong odors (31.1%). However, there were no significant differences in these nonspecific triggers between NAR and AR (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: There are significant differences in the distribution of age, sex and seasonality, personal and family history of allergic disease, and some environmental factors relevant to the onset of symptom between patients with NAR and AR.
