Emerging evidence indicates that gut microbial dysbiosis is associated with the development of antipsychotic-induced weight gain in schizophrenia (SZ). However, the exact taxonomic composition and functionality that constitute the "obesogenic" microbial profile remain elusive. Our retrospective survey identified two groups of the SZ population separated by BMI, with 1/3 of patients developing overweight/obesity after chronic antipsychotic treatment. Based on multi-omics analysis, we observed altered gut microbiota in SZ patients with overweight/obesity, characterized by a reduction in several beneficial bacteria genera, including Bacteroides, Parabacteroides, Akkermansia, and Clostridium. This microbial dysbiosis was accompanied by disrupted energy expenditure and nutritional metabolism, worsened metabolic indices, and reduced levels of beneficial metabolites, e.g. indole-3-carboxylic acid and propionic acid. Moreover, leveraging data from first-episode drug-naïve schizophrenia (FSZ) patients at one-month and one-year follow-up, both artificial neural network and random forest classifier-based prediction models demonstrated a strong ability of microbial profiles to predict antipsychotic-induced weight gain. Importantly, FSZ patients with higher relative abundance of Parabacteria distasonis were less susceptible to antipsychotic-induced weight gain. Thus, gut microbiota could serve as a noninvasive approach to predict antipsychotic-induced weight gain, guiding clinical antipsychotics administration and developing novel therapeutic strategies for weight management in SZ.

With the rapid growth of global energy consumption, the environment will further deteriorate, and the competition among countries to reduce emissions will become more intense. Photovoltaic power generation using solar energy as a clean energy source is of strategic importance for achieving a carbon-neutral planet. Therein, centralized photovoltaic power stations in terrestrial ecosystems cover the earth's surface, which leads to changes in land use and has a significant effect on the surface energy balance and precipitation regimes, altering soil nutrient cycling and plant productivity, and ultimately significantly affects ecosystem functions and services. By synthesizing relevant studies on this topic over the past 20 years, we summarized the effects of photovoltaic power station construction on microclimate, soil, flora and fauna, and potential changes in terrestrial ecosystem functions. Overall, the photovoltaic power stations improved the quality of the soil condition, especially in harsh environments, and increased the vegetation coverage. In addition, photovoltaic power stations could affect ecosystem functions including plant productivity, soil erosion resistance, and soil carbon sequestration by regulating microclimatic factors such as solar radiation intensity, air temperature and humidity, wind speed, and wind direction. Although numerous studies have anticipated the potential effect of photovoltaic power stations on ecosystem structure and functions, empirical evidence remains scarce. Therefore, more studies focusing on the regional variability of the ecological impacts of photovoltaic power stations and the potential pathways of photovoltaic power stations affecting ecosystem functions are needed in the future. Improving the understanding of the ecological effects of photovoltaic power stations may help to provide a basis for ecological protection and restoration.

Permafrost degradation profoundly affects carbon storage in alpine ecosystems, and the response characteristics of carbon sequestration are likely to differ at the different stages of permafrost degradation. Furthermore, the sensitivity of different stages of permafrost degradation to climate change is likely to vary. However, related research is lacking so far on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). To investigate these issues, the Shule River headwaters on the northeastern margin of the QTP was selected. We applied InVEST and Noah-MP land surface models in combination with remote sensing and field survey data to reveal the dynamics of different carbon (vegetation carbon, soil organic carbon (SOC), and ecosystem carbon) pools from 2001 to 2020. A space-for-time analysis was used to explore the response characteristics of carbon sequestration along a gradient of permafrost degradation, ranging from lightly degraded permafrost (H-SP) to severely degraded permafrost (U-EUP), and to analyze the sensitivity of the permafrost degradation gradient to climate change. Our results showed that: (1) the sensitivity of mean annual ground temperature (MAGT) to climatic variables in the U-EUP was stronger than that in the H-SP and S-TP, respectively; (2) rising MAGT led to permafrost degradation, but increasing annual precipitation promoted permafrost conservation; (3) vegetation carbon, SOC, and ecosystem carbon had similar spatial distribution patterns, with their storage decreasing from the mountain area to the valley; (4) alpine ecosystems acted as carbon sinks with the rate of 0.34 Mg‧ha-1‧a-1 during 2001-2020, of which vegetation carbon and SOC accumulations accounted for 10.65 % and 89.35 %, respectively; and (5) the effects of permafrost degradation from H-SP to U-EUP on carbon density changed from promotion to inhibition.

Neurosurgeons often face this dilemma. Brain neoplasm patients undergoing neurosurgery are at a high risk of venous thrombosis. However, antithrombotic drugs may induce bleeding complications. Therefore, we compared the efficacy and safety of prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in brain neoplasm patients undergoing neurosurgery. We searched Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Ovid MEDLINE(R), and Embase from inception to January 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the prophylactic measures efficacy and safety for VTE in brain neoplasm patients undergoing neurosurgery. The main efficacy outcome was symptomatic or asymptomatic VTE. The safety outcomes included major bleeding, minor bleeding, all occurrences of bleeding, and all-cause mortality. We used (Log) odds ratio (OR) of various chemoprophylaxis regimens to judge the safety and effectiveness of VTE. Additionally, all types of intervention were ranked by the Surface Under the Cumulative Ranking (SUCRA) value. We included 10 RCTs with 1128 brain neoplasm patients undergoing neurosurgery. For symptomatic or asymptomatic VTE and proximal DVT or PE, DOACs, compared with placebo, can significantly reduce the events. DOACs were superior to all other interventions in the rank plot of these events. For major bleeding reduction, unfractionated heparin (SUCRA value = 0.21) demonstrated better safety efficacy than others. For minor bleeding reduction, DOACs had a significantly higher risk of minor bleeding compared with placebo [Log OR 16.76, 95% CrI (1.53, 61.13)], LMWH [Log OR 15.68, 95% CrI (0.26, 60.10)] and UFH [Log OR 15.93, 95% CrI (0.22, 60.16)] respectively. Except for placebo (SUCRA values of 0.13), UFH (SUCRA values of 0.37) depicted better safety efficacy than others. For all-cause mortality, we found UFH always had significantly lower all-cause mortality compared with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) [Log OR = 14.17, 95% CrI (0.05, 48.35)]. UFH plus intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) (SUCRA value of 0.12) displayed the best safety for all-cause mortality. In our study, DOACs were more effective as prophylaxis for VTE in brain neoplasm patients undergoing neurosurgery. Regarding the safety of prophylaxis for VTE, UFH of chemoprophylaxis consistently demonstrated better safety efficacy, involving either major bleeding, minor bleeding, bleeding, or all-cause mortality.

Schizophrenia (SZ) places a tremendous burden on public health as one of the leading causes of disability and death. SZ patients are more prone to developing obesity than the general population from the clinical practice. The development of obesity frequently causes poor psychiatric outcomes in SZ patients. In turn, maternal obesity during pregnancy has been associated with an increased risk of SZ in offspring, suggesting that these two disorders may have shared neuropathological mechanisms. The gut microbiota is well known to serve as a major regulator of bidirectional interactions between the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. It also plays a critical role in maintaining physical and mental health in humans. Recent studies have shown that the dysbiosis of gut microbiota is intimately associated with the onset of SZ and obesity through shared pathophysiological mechanisms, particularly the stimulation of immune inflammation. Therefore, gut microbiota may serve as a common biological basis for the etiology in both SZ and obesity, and the perturbed gut-brain axis may therefore account for the high prevalence of obesity in patients with SZ. On the basis of these findings, this review provides updated perspectives and intervention approaches on the etiology, prevention, and management of obesity in SZ patients by summarizing the recent findings on the role of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of SZ and obesity, highlighting the role of gut-derived inflammation.

Understanding the impacts of diurnal freeze-thaw cycles (DFTCs) on soil microorganisms and greenhouse gas emissions is crucial for assessing soil carbon and nitrogen cycles in the alpine ecosystems. However, relevant studies in the permafrost regions in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) are still lacking. In this study, we used high-throughput pyrosequencing and static chamber-gas chromatogram to study the changes in topsoil bacteria and fluxes of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), during autumn DFTCs in the permafrost regions of the Shule River headwaters on the western part of Qilian Mountains, northeast margin of the QTP. The results showed that the bacterial communities contained a total of 35 phyla, 88 classes, 128 orders, 153 families, 176 genera, and 113 species. The dominant phyla were Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Gemmatimonadetes. Two DFTCs led to a trend of increasing bacterial diversity and significant changes in the relative abundance of 17 known bacteria at the family, genus, and species levels. These were predominantly influenced by soil temperature, water content, and salinity. In addition, CO2 flux significantly increased while CH4 flux distinctly decreased, and N2O flux tended to increase after two DFTCs, with soil bacteria being the primary affecting variable. This study can provide a scientific insight into the impact of climate change on biogeochemical cycles of the QTP.

BACKGROUND: Insulin has been demonstrated to play an important role in the occurrence and development of Alzheimer's disease, especially in those with diabetes. ß cells are important insulin-producing cells in human pancreas. This study aimed to investigate the association between ß-cell dysfunction and cognitive impairment among patients over 40-year-old with abnormal glucose metabolism in Chinese rural communities. METHODS: A sample of 592 participants aged 40 years or older from the China National Stroke Prevention Project (CSPP) between 2015 and 2017 were enrolled in this study. Abnormal glucose metabolism was defined when hemoglobin Alc ≥ 5.7%. Cognitive function was assessed by the Beijing edition of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment scale. Homeostasis assessment of ß-cell function was performed and classified into 4 groups according to the quartiles. A lower value of HOMA-ß indicated a worse condition of ß-cell function. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between ß-cell function and cognitive impairment. RESULTS: In a total of 592 patients with abnormal glucose metabolism, the average age was 60.20 ± 7.63 years and 60.1% patients had cognitive impairment. After adjusting for all potential risk factors, we found the first quartile of ß-cell function was significantly associated with cognitive impairment (OR: 2.27, 95%CI: 1.32-3.92), especially at the domains of language (OR: 1.64, 95%CI: 1.01-2.65) and abstraction (OR: 2.29, 95%CI: 1.46-3.58). CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that worse ß-cell function is associated with cognitive impairment of people over 40-year-old with abnormal glucose metabolism in Chinese rural communities, especially in the cognitive domains of abstraction and language.

It is generally believed that there is a vegetation succession sequence from alpine marsh meadow to desert in the alpine ecosystem of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However, we still have a limited understanding about distribution patterns and community assemblies of microorganisms' response to such vegetation changes. Hence, across a gradient represented by three types of alpine vegetation from swamp meadow to meadow to steppe, the soil bacterial, fungal and archaeal diversity was evaluated and then associated with their assembly processes, and glacier foreland vegetation was also surveyed as a case out of this gradient. Vegetation biomass was found to decrease significantly along the vegetation gradient. In contrast to irregular shifts in alpha diversity, bacterial and fungal beta diversities that were dominated by species replacement components (71.07-79.08%) significantly increased with the decreasing gradient in vegetation biomass (P < 0.05). These trends of increase were also found in the extent of stochastic bacterial and fungal assembly. Moreover, an increase in microbial beta diversity but a decrease in beta nearest taxon index were observed along with increased discrepancy in vegetation biomass (P < 0.001). Stepwise regression analyses and structural equation models suggested that vegetation biomass was the major variable that was related to microbial distribution and community assembly, and there might be associations between the dominance of species replacements and stochastic assembly. These findings enhanced our recognition of the relationship between vegetation and soil microorganisms and would facilitate the development of vegetation-microbe feedback models in alpine ecosystems.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Carotid atherosclerosis, including carotid artery intima-media thickness, plaques, and stenosis, is an important risk factor for stroke. However, the association between hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) was inconsistent. The aim of this study was to explore the association between HbA1c and the risk of increased cIMT among the Chinese population aged ≥40 years without diabetes. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 3528 participants without diabetes from the China National Stroke Screen Survey program were enrolled in this study. cIMT was measured using duplex ultrasound examination. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association between HbA1c level and the risk of increased cIMT. A total of 565 (16.0%) participants had increased cIMT. After adjustment for other potential confounding factors, higher levels of HbA1c increased the risk of increased cIMT compared with the lowest level, and the odds ratios for quartile 2, quartile 3, and quartile 4 were 1.58, 1.67, and 1.98, respectively. Age had an interaction impact on the association between HbA1c level and the risk of increased cIMT. CONCLUSION: In this large-scale and cross-sectional study, high-normal HbA1c was associated with the risk of increased asymptomatic cIMT in a rural Chinese population without diabetes, especially in individuals aged <60 years.

Ebullition has been shown to be an important pathway for methane (CH4) emissions from inland waters. However, the CH4 fluxes and their magnitudes in thermokarst lakes remain unclear due to limited research data, especially on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). The magnitude and regulation of two CH4 pathways, ebullition and diffusion, were investigated in 32 thermokarst lakes on the TP during the summer of 2020. CH4 emissions from thermokarst lakes on the TP showed significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Diffusion fluxes in lakes averaged 2.6 mmol m-2 d-1 (ranging from 0.003 to 48.4 mmol m-2 d-1), and ebullition fluxes in lakes averaged 6.6 mmol CH4 m-2 d-1 (ranging from 0.002 to 140.0 mmol m-2 d-1). Together, these ebullition fluxes contributed 66.1 ± 24.9% (ranging 5.4 to 100.0%) to the total (diffusion + ebullition) CH4 emissions, indicating the importance of ebullition as a major CH4 transport mechanism on the TP. In general, thermokarst lakes with higher CH4 diffusion fluxes and ebullition fluxes occurred in alpine meadows (2.5 ± 5.3 mmol m-2 d-1; 8.2 ± 20.6 mmol m-2 d-1), followed by alpine steppes (0.6 ± 5.3 mmol m-2 d-1; 0.7 ± 10.8 mmol m-2 d-1) and desert steppes (0.2 ± 0.2 mmol m-2 d-1; 0.6 ± 0.8 mmol m-2 d-1). The organic matter contents in water and sediment were found to be important factors influencing the seasonal variations in CH4 diffusion fluxes. However, the ebullition CH4 fluxes did not show a clear seasonal variation pattern. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the large spatiotemporal variations in ebullition CH4 fluxes to improve the accuracy of large-scale estimations of CH4 fluxes in thermokarst lakes on the TP. Greater insight into these aspects will increase the understanding of CH4 dynamics in thermokarst lakes on the TP, which is essential for forecasting and climate impact assessments and to better constrain feedback to climate warming.

Permafrost degradation may induce soil carbon (C) loss, critical for global C cycling, and be mediated by microbes. Despite larger C stored within the active layer of permafrost regions, which are more affected by warming, and the critical roles of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in C cycling, most previous studies focused on the permafrost layer and in high-latitude areas. We demonstrate in situ that permafrost degradation alters the diversity and potentially decreases the stability of active layer microbial communities. These changes are associated with soil C loss and potentially a positive C feedback. This study provides insights into microbial-mediated mechanisms responsible for C loss within the active layer in degraded permafrost, aiding in the modeling of C emission under future scenarios.

INTRODUCTION: Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke often fails due to poor adherence among patients to evidence-based prevention recommendations. The proper formatting of messages portraying CVD and stroke risks and interventional benefits may promote individuals' perception and motivation, adherence to healthy plans and eventual success in achieving risk control. The main objective of this study is to determine whether risk and intervention communication strategies (gain-framed vs loss-framed and long-term vs short-term contexts) and potential interaction thereof have different effects on the optimisation of adherence to clinical preventive management for the endpoint of CVD risk reduction among subjects with at least one CVD risk factor. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This trial is designed as a 2×2 factorial, observer-blinded multicentre randomised controlled study with four parallel groups. Trial participants are aged 45-80 years and have at least one CVD risk factor. Based on sample size calculations for primary outcome, we plan to enrol 15 000 participants. Data collection will occur at baseline, 6 months and 1 year after randomisation. The primary outcomes are changes in the estimated 10-year CVD risk, estimated lifetime CVD risk and estimated CVD-free life expectancy from baseline to the 1-year follow-up. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study received approval from the Ethical Committee of West China Hospital, Sichuan University and will be disseminated via peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04450888.

OBJECTS: To explore the specific features of cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia at different stages and its influencing factors. METHODS: The MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) were administered to 208 patients with schizophrenia, including 158 clinically stable schizophrenia (CSS) and 50 first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FES), and 40 healthy controls (HC). Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to match the CSS and FES. RESULTS: (1) The MCCB and it,s sub-scale scores in patients with schizophrenia were lower than HC, but the score of emotion intelligence showed no significant difference between CSS and HC. (2) Before PSM, the cognitive scores of FES were significantly lower than CSS (except trail making A test, Hopkins verbal learning, category fluency). After PSM, patients with CSS still do better in performing trail making A test, emotional intelligence, continuous performances and MCCB total score. (3) BPRS total score, gender, group (FES vs CSS) and age were independent contributors to emotion intelligence, and BPRS total score had the biggest effect. (4) The effect of group (FES vs CSS) on MCCB total score and emotional intelligence was statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: There are significant cognitive deficits in patients with FES and CSS compared with HC. FES have greater cognitive impairments compared with CSS. Emotion intelligence of CSS may be even close to the level of HC. BPRS total score, gender, group (FES vs CSS) and age may be the independent contributors to social cognition. Group (FES vs CSS) may play an important effect on general cognition and social cognition.

Background: The prevalence of cognitive impairment is growing and higher in rural areas. The association between carotid plaque and cognitive impairment remains uncertain, and few studies focused on the cognitive function of the rural population. We designed this study to investigate the association between carotid plaque and cognitive impairment in a rural community. Methods: We enrolled 3,336 participants who underwent carotid ultrasound and cognitive function measurements, free of cerebrovascular diseases, and without neurological deficits, from the China National Stroke Screen Survey program. Cognitive function was evaluated by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (Beijing version). We used multivariable logistic regression to assess the association between asymptomatic carotid plaques and the presence of cognitive impairment. Results: Nine hundred seventy-six participants had cognitive impairment in this study. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, asymptomatic carotid plaques (odds ratio was 1.35; 95% confidence interval, 1.15-1.58), especially vulnerable carotid plaques (odds ratio was 1.54; 95% confidence interval, 1.28-1.85), were associated with cognitive impairment. Conclusion: In this community-based and observational study, asymptomatic vulnerable carotid plaque is an independent and significant risk factor for cognitive impairment in rural residents.

In the general population, there is a strong inverse relationship between the number of ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) metrics and the total incidence of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. However, the prevalence of ideal CVH is extremely low and there are few studies on its association with newly found asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis (AICAS). Therefore, we performed this prospective study to assess the relationship between the newly found AICAS and ideal CVH metrics in the Chinese community population. Seven ideal CVH metrics of 3,475 participants in the Asymptomatic Polyvascular Abnormalities Community study (APAC) conducted in China (1,962 men and 1,513 women between the ages of 45 and 75 years) were collected. Based on the occurrence of newly found AICAS, all participants were divided into the AICAS group and non-ICAS group. Prevalence of ideal CVH metrics was compared between the two groups. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association of newly found AICAS with ideal CVH metrics. The result was the number of ideal CVH metrics was strongly associated with age, gender, education levels and family income (each P < 0.0001). Among the seven CVH metrics total cholesterol (TC) was the only one showing significant difference between the newly found AICAS group and non-ICAS group in our 2 years observation. Participants with less ideal CVH metrics (≤3) were associated with significantly higher prevalence of AICAS than those with more (>3) ideal CVH metrics (OR, 1.27; P = 0.045). Furthermore, less (≤3) ideal CVH metrics was markedly associated with higher incidence of AICAS for all participants, younger participants (<60 years) (OR, 1.34; P = 0.046) and men participants (OR, 1.53; P = 0.032) after adjustment for gender, age, education level, family income and stroke history. Thus we conclude that participants with newly found AICAS have high prevalence of total cholesterol status, and Individuals with low ideal CVH metrics (≤3) are associated with significantly higher prevalence of asymptomatic ICAS, especially in high-risk population of young and men participants. Therefore, primordial prevention of stroke should also focus on those high-risk populations.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diabetes may be one of the risk factors of cognitive impairment. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between diabetes status and cognitive impairment among the middle-aged and elderly population (≥40 years) in Chinese rural communities. METHODS: A sample of 3392 participants aged 40 years or older from the China National Stroke Prevention Project (CSPP) between 2015 and 2017 were enrolled in this study. Cognitive function was assessed by the Beijing edition of the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) scale. Cognitive impairment was diagnosed as a MoCA score < 26. Diabetes status was divided into three groups------Normal: fasting plasma glucose (FPG) ≤ 5.5 mmol/L, Prediabetes: 5.6 ≤ FPG ≤ 6.9 mmol/L, Diabetes: FPG ≥ 7.0 mmol/L or with a history of diabetes. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between diabetes status and cognitive impairment. RESULTS: Out of the 3392 enrolled participants, 2023(59.6%) had cognitive impairment, 1586(46.8%) had abnormal fasting plasma glucose including 867(25.6%) prediabetes and 719(21.2%) diabetes. After adjusting for potential risk factors, we found prediabetes (OR: 1.22, 95%CI: 1.03-1.45) and diabetes (OR: 1.28, 95%CI: 1.06-1.55) are all associated with cognitive impairment, especially in the domains of language (prediabetes: OR: 1.14, 95%CI: 1.05-1.25; diabetes: OR:1.13, 95%CI: 1.03-1.24), visuospatial/executive functions (diabetes: OR: 1.50, 95%CI: 1.22-1.84) and attention (diabetes: OR: 1.15, 95%CI: 1.02-1.31). CONCLUSIONS: In this large community-based study, we found diabetes status may be an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment, particularly in domains of language, visuospatial/executive functions, and attention.

Cognitive impairment is one of the core symptoms of schizophrenia, and patients with schizophrenia are at increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MS). However, the role of MS in cognitive impairment of schizophrenia is not established. This study investigated the correlation between neurocognitive, social cognitive performance and MS with schizophrenia. One hundred and fifty eight (158) schizophrenia patients were divided into 3 groups with ① normal metabolism, ② metabolic disorder (only meeting 1 or 2 MS criteria), and ③ metabolic syndrome (meeting 3 or more MS criteria). MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery)MCCB(and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale)BPRS(were used to evaluate cognitive performance and clinical symptoms. Blood samples were obtained to detect glucose and lipid metabolic levels. Overall MCCB and subscale T scores in the normal metabolism and metabolic disorder groups were better than in the MS group. After controlling for the confounding factors including age, sex, the usage of hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic drugs, and disease duration, metabolic deficits had effects on the symbol coding and spatial span scores. The results suggest that a defective metabolic state might play a role in neurocognitive performance of schizophrenia patients.

Tibetan permafrost largely formed during the late Pleistocene glacial period and shrank in the Holocene Thermal Maximum period. Quantifying the impacts of paleoclimatic extremes on soil carbon stock can shed light on the vulnerability of permafrost carbon in the future. Here, we synthesize data from 1114 sites across the Tibetan permafrost region to report that paleoclimate is more important than modern climate in shaping current permafrost carbon distribution, and its importance increases with soil depth, mainly through forming the soil's physiochemical properties. We derive a new estimate of modern soil carbon stock to 3 m depth by including the paleoclimate effects, and find that the stock ([Formula: see text] PgC) is triple that predicted by ecosystem models (11.5 ± 4.2 s.e.m PgC), which use pre-industrial climate to initialize the soil carbon pool. The discrepancy highlights the urgent need to incorporate paleoclimate information into model initialization for simulating permafrost soil carbon stocks.

BACKGROUND: Ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) metrics have been found to be associated with subclinical vascular abnormalities. However, the relationship between ideal CVH metrics and retinal vessel calibers and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in a Chinese population is unknown. METHODS: We collected information on the seven ideal CVH metrics among 3376 participants aged 40 years or older from the Asymptomatic Polyvascular Abnormalities Community Study in 2012. Retinal vessel calibers and RNFL thickness were assessed by retinal photography and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Multivariable linear models were used to analyze the relationship between ideal CVH metrics and retinal parameters. RESULTS: With the decreased number of ideal CVH metrics, central retinal arteriolar equivalents (CRAE) was significantly narrowed and arterio- venous ratio (AVR) significantly decreased (p < 0.0001). While the RNFL thickness and central retinal venous equivalents (CRVE) showed no significant changes with the decreased ideal CVH metrics. Linear regression showed that both CRAE and AVR was positively related with the number of ideal CVH metrics (regression coefficient beta: 0.806, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.266-1.346 for CRAE (micron); and regression coefficient beta: 0.005, 95% CI: 0.002-0.009 for AVR) after adjusting for age (year), sex = male (n), education (n), average monthly income (¥) and other related risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested a clear positive relationship between the number of ideal CVH metrics and CRAE and AVR in Chinese population, supporting the importance of ideal health behaviors and factors in subclinical vascular abnormalities prevention.
