AIM: Patients with acute ischaemic stroke are more likely to develop refeeding syndrome due to increased need for nutritional support when suffering alterations of consciousness and impairment of swallowing. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, risk factors and outcomes of refeeding syndrome in stroke patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study, using the prospective stroke database from hospital, included all consecutive acute ischaemic stroke patients who received enteral nutrition for more than 72 h from 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2022. Refeeding syndrome was defined as occurrence of new-onset hypophosphataemia within 72 h after enteral feeding. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to evaluate risk factors and relationships between refeeding syndrome and stroke outcomes. RESULTS: 338 patients were included in the study. 50 patients (14.8%) developed refeeding syndrome. Higher scores on National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale and Nutritional Risk Screening 2002, albumin <30 g/L and BMI <18.5 kg/m2 were risk factors for refeeding syndrome. Moreover, refeeding syndrome was independently associated with a 3-month modified Rankin Scale score of >2 and 6-month mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Refeeding syndrome was common in stroke patients and higher baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, higher Nutritional Risk Screening 2002, albumin <30 g/L and BMI <18.5 kg/m2 were independent risk factors of refeeding syndrome. Occurrence of refeeding syndrome was significantly associated with higher 3-month modified Rankin Scale and 6-month mortality.

Introduction: Peripheral vascular atherosclerosis (PVA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by lipid accumulation in blood vessel walls, leading to vessel narrowing and inadequate blood supply. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying PVA remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed a combination of Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and integrated transcriptomics to identify the critical gene signature associated with PVA. Methods: This study utilized three public datasets (GSE43292, GSE100927 and GSE28829) related to peripheral vascular atherosclerosis obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Instrumental variables (IVs) were identified through expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) analysis, and two-sample MR analysis was performed using publicly available summary statistics. Disease critical genes were identified based on odds ratios and intersected with differentially expressed genes in the disease dataset. GSE28829 dataset was used to validate the screened disease critical genes. Functional enrichment analysis, GSEA analysis, and immune cell infiltration analysis were performed to further characterize the role of these genes in peripheral vascular atherosclerosis. Results: A total of 26,152 gene-related SNPs were identified as IVs, and 242 disease-associated genes were identified through MR analysis. Ten disease critical genes (ARHGAP25, HCLS1, HVCN1, RBM47, LILRB1, PLAU, IFI44L, IL1B, IFI6, and CFL2) were significantly associated with peripheral vascular atherosclerosis. Functional enrichment analysis using KEGG pathways revealed enrichment in the NF-kappa B signaling pathway and osteoclast differentiation. Gene set enrichment analysis further demonstrated functional enrichment of these genes in processes related to vascular functions and immune system activation. Additionally, immune cell infiltration analysis showed differential ratios of B cells and mast cells between the disease and control groups. The correlations analysis highlights the intricate interplay between disease critical genes and immune cells associated with PVA. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying PVA by identifying ten disease critical genes associated with the disease. These findings, supported by differential expression, functional enrichment, and immune system involvement, emphasize the role of these genes in vascular function and immune cell interactions in the context of PVA. These findings contribute to a better understanding of PVA pathogenesis and offer potential targets for further mechanistic exploration and therapeutic interventions.

Handgrip strength is a crucial indicator to monitor the change of cognitive function over time, but its mechanism still needs to be further explored. We sampled 59 monozygotic twin pairs to explore the potential mediating effect of DNA methylation (DNAm) on the association between handgrip strength and cognitive function. The initial step was the implementation of an epigenome-wide association analysis (EWAS) in the study participants, with the aim of identifying DNAm variations that are associated with handgrip strength. Following that, we conducted an assessment of the mediated effect of DNAm by the use of mediation analysis. In order to do an ontology enrichment study for CpGs, the GREAT program was used. There was a significant positive association between handgrip strength and cognitive function (ß = 0.194, P < 0.001). The association between handgrip strength and DNAm of 124 CpGs was found to be statistically significant at a significance level of P < 1 × 10-4. Fifteen differentially methylated regions (DMRs) related to handgrip strength were found in genes such as SNTG2, KLB, CDH11, and PANX2. Of the 124 CpGs, 4 within KRBA1, and TRAK1 mediated the association between handgrip strength and cognitive function: each 1 kg increase in handgrip strength was associated with a potential decrease of 0.050 points in cognitive function scores, mediated by modifications in DNAm. The parallel mediating effect of these 4 CpGs was -0.081. The presence of DNAm variation associated with handgrip strength may play a mediated role in the association between handgrip strength and cognitive function.

The destruction of the microvascular structure and function can seriously affect the survival and prognosis of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Nuciferine has a potentially beneficial effect in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, albeit its role in microvascular structure and function during AMI remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect and the related mechanisms of nuciferine in microvascular injury during AMI. Cardiac functions and pathological examination were conducted in vivo to investigate the effect of nuciferine on AMI. The effect of nuciferine on permeability and adherens junctions in endothelial cells was evaluated in vitro, and the phosphorylation level of the PI3K/AKT pathway (in the presence or absence of PI3K inhibitors) was also analyzed. In vivo results indicated that nuciferine inhibited ischemia-induced cardiomyocyte damage and vascular leakage and improved cardiac function. In addition, the in vitro results revealed that nuciferine could effectively inhibit oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) stimulated breakdown of the structure and function of human coronary microvascular endothelial cells (HCMECs). Moreover, nuciferine could significantly increase the phosphorylation level of the PI3K/AKT pathway. Finally, the inhibitor wortmannin could reverse the protective effect of nuciferine on HCMECs. Nuciferine inhibited AMI-induced microvascular injury by regulating the PI3K/AKT pathway and protecting the endothelial barrier function in mice.

Brassica oleracea, globally cultivated for its vegetable crops, consists of very diverse morphotypes, characterized by specialized enlarged organs as harvested products. This makes B. oleracea an ideal model for studying rapid evolution and domestication. We constructed a B. oleracea pan-genome from 27 high-quality genomes representing all morphotypes and their wild relatives. We identified structural variations (SVs) among these genomes and characterized these in 704 B. oleracea accessions using graph-based genome tools. We show that SVs exert bidirectional effects on the expression of numerous genes, either suppressing through DNA methylation or promoting probably by harboring transcription factor-binding elements. The following examples illustrate the role of SVs modulating gene expression: SVs promoting BoPNY and suppressing BoCKX3 in cauliflower/broccoli, suppressing BoKAN1 and BoACS4 in cabbage and promoting BoMYBtf in ornamental kale. These results provide solid evidence for the role of SVs as dosage regulators of gene expression, driving B. oleracea domestication and diversification.

Constructing inbred lines for self-incompatible species and species with long generation times is challenging, making the use of F1 outcross/segregating populations the main strategy for genetic studies of such species. However, there is a lack of dedicated algorithms/tools for rapid quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping using the F1 populations. To this end, we have designed and developed an algorithm/tool called OcBSA specifically for QTL mapping of F1 populations. OcBSA transforms the four-haplotype inheritance problem from the two heterozygous diploid parents of the F1 population into the two-haplotype inheritance problem common in current genetic studies by removing the two haplotypes from the heterozygous parent that do not contribute to phenotype segregation in the F1 population. Testing of OcBSA on 1800 simulated F1 populations demonstrated its advantages over other currently available tools in terms of sensitivity and accuracy. In addition, the broad applicability of OcBSA was validated by QTL mapping using seven reported F1 populations of apple, pear, peach, citrus, grape, tea, and rice. We also used OcBSA to map the QTL for flower color in a newly constructed F1 population of potato generated in this study. The OcBSA mapping result was verified by the insertion or deletion markers to be consistent with a previously reported locus harboring the ANTHOCYANIN 2 gene, which regulates potato flower color. Taken together, these results highlight the power and broad utility of OcBSA for QTL mapping using F1 populations and thus a great potential for functional gene mining in outcrossing species. OBJECTIVE: Cynarin is a derivative of hydroxycinnamic acid presented in various medicinal plants, such as Cynara scolymus L. and Onopordum illyricum L. To date, the antioxidant and antihypertensive activities of cynarin have been reported. However, whether cynarin has a therapeutic impact on ulcerative colitis (UC) is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the potential effect of cynarin on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute colitis in vivo and on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-induced RAW264.7 and J774A.1 cellular inflammation model in vitro. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we investigated that cynarin alleviated clinical symptoms in animal models, including disease activity index (DAI) and histological damage. Furthermore, cynarin can attenuate colon inflammation through decreasing the proportion of neutrophils in peripheral blood, reducing the infiltration of neutrophils, and macrophages in colon tissue, inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and suppressing the expression of STAT3 and p65. In cellular inflammation models, cynarin inhibited the expression of M1 macrophage markers, such as TNF-α, IL-1ß, and iNOS. Besides, cynarin suppressed the expression of STAT3 and p65 as well as the phosphorylation of STAT3, p65. Cynarin inhibited the polarization of RAW264.7 and J774A.1 cells toward M1 and alleviated LPS/IFN-γ-induced cellular inflammation. CONCLUSION: Considering these results, we conclude that cynarin mitigates experimental UC partially through inhibiting the STAT3/NF-кB signaling pathways and macrophage polarization toward M1. Accordingly, cynarin might be a potential and effective therapy for UC.

Polyploidization is important to the evolution of plants. Subgenome dominance is a distinct phenomenon associated with most allopolyploids. A gene on the dominant subgenome tends to express to higher RNA levels in all organs as compared to the expression of its syntenic paralogue (homoeolog). The mechanism that underlies the formation of subgenome dominance remains unknown, but there is evidence for the involvement of transposon/DNA methylation density differences nearby the genes of parents as being causal. The subgenome with lower density of transposon and methylation near genes is positively associated with subgenome dominance. Here, we generated eight generations of allotetraploid progenies from the merging of parental genomes Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea. We found that transposon/methylation density differ near genes between the parental (rapa:oleracea) existed in the wide hybrid, persisted in the neotetraploids (the synthetic Brassica napus), but these neotetraploids expressed no expected subgenome dominance. This absence of B. rapa vs. B. oleracea subgenome dominance is particularly significant because, while there is no negative relationship between transposon/methylation level and subgenome dominance in the neotetraploids, the more ancient parental subgenomes for all Brassica did show differences in transposon/methylation densities near genes and did express, in the same samples of cells, biased gene expression diagnostic of subgenome dominance. We conclude that subgenome differences in methylated transposon near genes are not sufficient to initiate the biased gene expressions defining subgenome dominance. Our result was unexpected, and we suggest a "nuclear chimera" model to explain our data.

Objective: Zishen Yutai Pill (ZYP) is a frequently used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation in women's health. However, the effects of ZYP on endometrial epithelial response have not been fully explored. Herein, uterine natural killer cell (uNK) secretion medium was used to mimic the uterine microenvironment. Thereafter, an endometrial epithelial cell line (Ishikawa cells) was treated with ZYP-containing serum to elucidate the effects of ZYP on endometrial receptivity.Methods: uNK cells were isolated from decidual tissues of pregnant women undergoing pregnancy termination surgery, and thereafter, uNK secretion medium was collected. ZYP-containing serum was collected from rats after intragastrical administration of ZYP. Ishikawa cells were divided into three groups, one treated with blank control (control group), one treated with uNK secretion medium (uNK group), and one treated with both uNK secretion medium and ZYP-containing serum (ZYP + uNK group). Total RNAs were extracted. Gene expression profiles of Ishikawa in different groups were determined through microarray analysis. mRNA expressions of selected genes were determined through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Expression of intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) was determined using Western blotting (WB). Results: Compared with the uNK group, the gene expressions of ZYP group with a total of 1117 genes were significantly altered, among which 510 genes were upregulated and 607 genes were downregulated. Compared with uNK group, expressions of CSF1, CSF2, SPP1, and ICAM1 were upregulated (P < 0.05). Up-regulation of ICAM-1 expression after treatment of ZYP was further confirmed by WB analysis. Conclusion: In brief, in the presence of uNK cell medium, ZYP could improve the expressions of ICAM1, CSF1, CSF2, TNF, SPP1, etc. However, further exploration should be carried out in in vivo experiments for the validation of the mechanisms of ZYP on endometrial epithelial response.

The relationships between mixtures of multiple minerals and depression have not been explored. Therefore, we analyzed the relationship between the mixture of nine dietary minerals [calcium (Ca), phosphorus, magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), zinc, copper (Cu), sodium, potassium (K), and selenium (Se)] and depressive symptoms in the general population. We screened 20,342 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. We fitted the general linear regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), and Bayesian semiparametric regression models to explore associations and interactions. We obtained the relative importance of dietary minerals by calculating posterior inclusion probabilities (PIPs). The dietary intakes of minerals were obtained using the 24-h dietary recall interview, and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The linear analysis showed that nine minerals were negatively associated with PHQ-9 scores. The BKMR analysis showed a negative association between the dietary mineral mixture and PHQ-9 scores, with Se having the largest PIP at 1.0000, followed by K (0.7784). We also observed potential interactions between Ca and Fe, Se and Fe, and K and Mg. Among them, the interaction of Ca and Fe had the largest PIP of 0.986. In addition, the overall effect was more pronounced in females than males, and Cu's PIP (0.8376) was higher in females. Two sensitivity analyses showed that our results were robust. Our study provides a basis for formulating nutritional intervention programs for depression in the future.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Fibrosis is the principle reason for heart failure in diabetes. Regarding the involvement of long non-coding ribonucleic acid zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 antisense 1 (ZEB1-AS1) in diabetic myocardial fibrosis, we explored its specific mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Human cardiac fibroblasts (HCF) were treated with high glucose (HG) and manipulated with plasmid cloning deoxyribonucleic acid 3.1-ZEB1-AS1/microribonucleic acid (miR)-181c-5p mimic/short hairpin RNA specific to sirtuin 1 (sh-SIRT1). ZEB1-AS1, miR-181c-5p expression patterns, cell viability, collagen I and III, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), fibronectin levels and cell migration were assessed by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction, cell counting kit-8, western blot and scratch tests. Nuclear/cytosol fractionation assay verified ZEB1-AS1 subcellular localization. The binding sites between ZEB1-AS1 and miR-181c-5p, and between miR-181c-5p and SIRT1 were predicted and verified by Starbase and dual-luciferase assays. The binding of SIRT1 to Yes-associated protein (YAP) and YAP acetylation levels were detected by co-immunoprecipitation. Diabetic mouse models were established. SIRT1, collagen I, collagen III, α-SMA and fibronectin levels, mouse myocardium morphology and collagen deposition were determined by western blot, and hematoxylin-eosin and Masson trichrome staining. RESULTS: Zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 antisense 1 was repressed in HG-induced HCFs. ZEB1-AS1 overexpression inhibited HG-induced HCF excessive proliferation, migration and fibrosis, and diminished collagen I, collagen III, α-SMA and fibronectin protein levels in cells. miR-181c-5p had targeted binding sites with ZEB1-AS1 and SIRT1. SIRT1 silencing/miR-181c-5p overexpression abrogated ZEB1-AS1-inhibited HG-induced HCF proliferation, migration and fibrosis. ZEB1-AS1 suppressed HG-induced HCF fibrosis through SIRT1-mediated YAP deacetylation. ZEB1-AS1 and SIRT1 were repressed in diabetic mice, and miR-181c-5p was promoted. ZEB1-AS1 overexpression improved myocardial fibrosis in diabetic mice, and reduced collagen I, collagen III, α-SMA and fibronectin protein levels in myocardial tissues. CONCLUSION: Long non-coding ribonucleic acid ZEB1-AS1 alleviated myocardial fibrosis through the miR-181c-5p-SIRT1-YAP axis in diabetic mice.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the efficacy of acupuncture for the treatment of tobacco withdrawal syndrome. METHODS: The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding acupuncture for treatment of tobacco withdrawal syndrome were searched in CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, SinoMed, PubMed, Cochrane, Medline and EMbase databases. The search period was from January 1st of 2011 to December 31st of 2021. After data extraction and bias risk assessment of the included literature, the Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.4.1 software. RESULTS: Totally 23 RCTs were included, including 2 120 patients. The Meta-analysis results showed that compared with medication, acupuncture showed no significant difference at improving Fagerström test for nicotine dependence (FTND) score (MD=0.16, 95%CI: -0.08, 0.41), heaviness of smoking index (HSI) score (MD=0.11, 95%CI: -0.13, 0.36), Minnesota nicotine withdrawal scale (MNWS) score (MD=0.12, 95%CI: -0.11, 1.35), questionnaire of smoking urges (QSU) score (MD=-0.30, 95%CI: -2.78, 2.18), Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) score (MD=0.76, 95%CI: -1.54, 3.06), abstinence rate (RR=0.95, 95% CI: 0.82, 1.10) and effective rate (RR=1.01, 95%CI: 0.95, 1.07). Acupuncture was superior to sham acupuncture in reducing MNWS score (MD=-4.88, 95%CI: -5.21, -4.55, P<0.000 01). Acupuncture was superior to cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing FTND score (MD=-1.41, 95%CI: -1.74, -1.08), MNWS score (MD=-4.28, 95%CI: -5.31, -3.25) and increasing abstinence rate (RR=2.19, 95%CI: 1.39, 3.45, P<0.000 01, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture could effectively improve tobacco withdrawal syndrome, increase abstinence rate and effective rate. Limited by the quantity and quality of the included studies, this conclusion needs to be verified by more studies.

Microbial colonization of animal intestine impacts host metabolism and immunity. The study was aimed to investigate the diversity of the intestinal microflora in specific pathogen free (SPF) and non-SPF Beagle dogs of different ages by direct sequencing analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. Stool samples were collected from four non-SPF and four SPF healthy Beagle dogs. From a total of 792 analyzed Operation taxonomic units, four predominant bacterial phyla were identified: Firmicutes (75.23%), Actinobacteria (10.98%), Bacteroidetes (9.33%), and Proteobacteria (4.13%). At the genus level, Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium were dominated. Among which, Alloprevotella, Prevotella_9, and Faecalibacterium were presented exclusively in non-SPF beagles, with potentially anti-inflammatory capability, which could protect non-SPF beagles from complex microbial environment. The number and diversity of intestinal flora for non-SPF Beagle dogs were the highest at birth and gradually decreased with growth, whereas the results for the SPF beagle samples were the opposite, with the number and diversity of intestinal microbiota gradually increases as beagles grow. In a nutshell, the microbial complexity of the rearing environment can enrich the gut microbiota of beagles, many of which are anti-inflammatory microbiota with the potential to increase the adaptability of the animal to the environment. However, the gut microbiota of SPF beagles was more sensitive to environmental changes than that of non-SPF beagles. This study is of great significance for understanding the bionomics of intestinal microflora in non-SPF and SPF beagles, improving the experimental accuracy in scientific research.

Handgrip strength has been shown an indispensable biomarker for older adults. Furthermore, the association between sleep duration and grip strength in special populations (e.g., type 2 diabetics) has been previously documented. However, the association between sleep duration and grip strength has been less studied in older adults and the dose-response relationship is unclear. Therefore, we drew 1881 participants aged 60 years and older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014 to explore their association and the dose-response relationship. Sleep duration was obtained through self-report. Grip strength data were obtained through a grip test using a handgrip dynamometer and divided into two categories: low grip strength and normal grip strength. Thus, dichotomized grip strength was used as a dependent variable. Poisson regression and restricted cubic spline were used for the main part of the analysis. We found that long sleep duration (≥9 h) was associated with a higher prevalence of low grip strength than the normal sleep duration (7-<9 h) group (IRR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.12-1.69). Moreover, the gender-stratified analysis did not change the original results. This association was particularly pronounced and further strengthened among participants with normal weight (BMI < 25) (IRR: 2.30, 95% CI: 1.64-3.22) and participants aged 60-70 (IRR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.40-2.22). In addition, with the increase in sleep duration, the multivariate-adjusted IRRs of low grip strength had a general downward trend at first, followed by a brief period of stability, and then presented an upward trend (p-value for non-linearity = 0.001). According to this study, we found that older adults who had long sleep duration had a higher risk of low grip strength. Muscle insulin utilization and muscle glucose metabolism are closely related to grip strength, so our research emphasizes the importance of maintaining normal sleep duration in older adults and suggests that older adults who sleep for a long period should pay more attention to their muscle health.

Despite increasing attention to the influence of unsteady-state volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the adsorption of activated carbon, studies in this regard are rare. Therefore, in this study, an investigation into the migration and diffusion of unsteady-state VOCs on activated carbon adsorption beds under reverse ventilation was conducted. Here, reverse clean air was introduced when the activated carbon bed reached the penetration point. The influence of reverse ventilation temperature, reverse superficial gas velocity, activated carbon filling height, and different ventilation modes on the adsorption of unsteady toluene by activated carbon were studied. Our experimental results show that when the reverse ventilation temperature increased from 20 °C to 60 °C, the quasi-first-order desorption rate constant increased from 0.00356 min-1 to 0.00807 min-1, an increase in the reverse superficial gas velocity led to a higher rate constant, and at greater reverse superficial gas velocities, the stripping capacity increased. It was observed that the maximum stripping capacity was achieved at a reverse superficial gas velocity of 0.3 m/s. For different activated carbon filling heights, following reverse ventilation, the stripping capacity of a 5 cm and 30 cm activated carbon bed accounted for 41.43% and 65.85% of the original adsorption capacity, respectively. The study concludes that concentration of toluene first increased and then decreased with time under forward ventilation, whereas the concentration gradually decreased under reverse ventilation.

Orychophragmus violaceus, referred to as "eryuelan" (February orchid) in China, is an early-flowering ornamental plant. The high oil content and abundance of unsaturated fatty acids in O. violaceus seeds make it a potential high-quality oilseed crop. Here, we generated a whole-genome assembly for O. violaceus using Nanopore and Hi-C sequencing technologies. The assembled genome of O. violaceus was ∼1.3 Gb in size, with 12 pairs of chromosomes. Through investigation of ancestral genome evolution, we determined that the genome of O. violaceus experienced a tetraploidization event from a diploid progenitor with the translocated proto-Calepineae karyotype. Comparisons between the reconstructed subgenomes of O. violaceus identified indicators of subgenome dominance, indicating that subgenomes likely originated via allotetraploidy. O. violaceus was phylogenetically close to the Brassica genus, and tetraploidy in O. violaceus occurred approximately 8.57 million years ago, close in time to the whole-genome triplication of Brassica that likely arose via an intermediate tetraploid lineage. However, the tetraploidization in Orychophragmus was independent of the hexaploidization in Brassica, as evidenced by the results from detailed phylogenetic analyses and comparisons of the break and fusion points of ancestral genomic blocks. Moreover, identification of multi-copy genes regulating the production of high-quality oil highlighted the contributions of both tetraploidization and tandem duplication to functional innovation in O. violaceus. These findings provide novel insights into the polyploidization evolution of plant species and will promote both functional genomic studies and domestication/breeding efforts in O. violaceus.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy between auricular point sticking combined with transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) and nicotine patch for smoking cessation. METHODS: Two hundred patients who voluntarily quit smoking were randomly divided into a combination group and a nicotine patch group, 100 cases in each group. In the combination group, auricular point sticking (Shenmen [TF4], Neifenmi [CO18], Pizhixia [AT4], Jiaogan [AH6a], etc., once every other day) combined with TEAS(Lieque [LU 7] and Zusanli [ST 36], with continuous wave, 20 Hz in frequency, 1 mA in current intensity, 30 min each time, once a day) were applied. In the nicotine patch group, nicotine patch was applied. Both groups were treated for 8 weeks. The immediate withdrawal rate and persistent withdrawal rate 8 weeks into treatment and in follow-up of 16 weeks after treatment in the two groups were compared; before treatment, 8 weeks into treatment and in follow-up of 16 weeks after treatment, the degree of nicotine dependence was evaluated by using Fagerström test for nicotine dependence (FTND); 1 week into treatment, 8 weeks into treatment and in follow-up of 16 weeks after treatment, the withdrawal symptoms and smoking craving were evaluated by using Minnesota nicotine withdrawal scale (MNWS); the safety and compliance (dropped off rate and treatment completeness) were evaluated in the two groups. RESULTS: There was no statistical significance of the differences in the immediate withdrawal rate and persistent withdrawal rate 8 weeks into treatment and during follow-up between the two groups (P>0.05). The FTND scores were decreased 8 weeks into treatment and during follow-up in the two groups compared with those before treatment (P<0.01); the FTND score during follow-up in the combination group was lower than the nicotine patch group (P<0.05). The MNWS scores were decreased 8 weeks into treatment and during follow-up in the two groups compared with those 1 week into treatment (P<0.05); the changes of MNWS scores 8 weeks into treatment and during follow-up in the combination group were greater than the nicotine patch group (P<0.05, P<0.01). There were no serious adverse reactions in either group. Eight weeks into treatment and during follow-up, the dropped off rates were all 16.0% (16/100) in the combination group, which were 20.0% (20/100) and 23.0% (23/100) in the nicotine patch group, there was no statistical significance of the differences in the two groups (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in treatment completeness between the two groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Auricular point sticking combined with TEAS could effective decrease the degree of nicotine dependence, improve withdrawal symptoms in smokers, its effect is superior to nicotine patch.

The association between iodine status and depressive symptoms has not been investigated in the general population. Therefore, we drew 8935 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018 to explore their association. In NHANES, Inductively Coupled Plasma Dynamic Reaction Cell Mass Spectroscopy was utilized to measure urinary iodine concentration (UIC), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 was used to assess depressive symptoms. Meanwhile, we fitted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models. We found that high UIC was associated with a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms than the normal UIC group (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.04-2.16). This association was particularly pronounced and further strengthened among females (OR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.19-3.01) and participants aged 40-59 (OR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.11-3.25). Moreover, we found that low UIC was associated with a high prevalence of depressive symptoms among females (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.02-2.18). Moreover, the dose-response relationship between UIC and depressive symptoms presented a general trend of decreased, steady transiently, and then increased. We found that participants with high UIC had a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms than those with normal UIC. Meanwhile, we also found that females with low UIC had higher odds of reporting depressive symptoms.

AIMS: Our objective was to explore whether the accuracy of the transitional zone index (TZI) for outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias (OT-VAs) origin is affected by cardiac rotation and the additive value of interventricular septum angle (IVSa) obtained from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). METHODS: Standard 12-lead ECGs of OT-VAs with inferior axis in consecutive patients undergoing both CCTA examination and successful ablation were retrospectively analyzed. The IVSa was defined as an angle between the long axis of IVS and sagittal axis of the body from CCTA. RESULTS: 64 patients (31 men; mean age 54.2 ± 11.6 years) were enrolled. The OT-VAs exhibited right ventricular outflow tract origin in 46 (71.9%) patients and 36 (78.3%) were diagnosed correctly by TZI. The left ventricular outflow tract origin OT-VAs was observed in 18 (28.1%) patients and 16 (88.9%) were diagnosed correctly by TZI. The patients were then divided into TZI correct group (n = 52) and TZI incorrect group (n = 12). In the TZI incorrect group, 11/12 (91.7%) cases were R/S transition in lead V3 with the TZ score during premature ventricular contractions [2.8(2.5-3.4)], and the TZI between -1.5 and 0. The IVSa was significantly larger in the TZI incorrect group than correct group (52.0 ± 6.9° vs. 39.0 ± 6.1°; p < .0001). The IVSa ≥46° predicted TZI incorrect with 92% sensitivity, 94% specificity, and 94% accuracy. CONCLUSION: The IVSa is a novel cardiac rotation index that reliably improves TZI to differentiate the OT-VAs origin, especially for the OT-VAs with lead V3 R/S transition.
