OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) growth rates, body composition, and cardiometabolic markers in preschool children. METHODS: Three-year-old children were recruited for this cohort study. BMI and body composition measurements were obtained at enrollment, with multiple BMI measurements spanning ages 1 month to 3 years extracted from medical records. Levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), non-HDL-cholesterol (non-HDL-C), remnant cholesterol (RC), uric acid (UA), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) were measured at 3 years. Data analyses employed piecewise linear mixed models and logistic regression models. RESULTS: Out of 3822 children recruited, 3015 were included in the analysis. The accelerated zBMI growth rate between 6 and 24 months was positively correlated with high TG and LDL-C levels, with sex, birthweight, and size-for-gestational age disparities. Obesity increased the risks of high TG level and the highest RC quartile in boys. Fat mass index (FMI) and percentage of fat mass (FM%) were linked with high UA level and dyslipidemia, particularly high TG and non-HDL-C levels, in boys. Fat-free mass index (FFMI) showed negative associations with high levels of TC and non-HDL-C in boys and high LDL-C level in girls (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the significant impact of BMI growth rates and body composition on cardiometabolic markers in 3-year-old children. The effects of BMI growth rates in specific periods varied by sex, birthweight, and size-for-gestational age, and boys exhibiting a higher susceptibility to adverse outcomes.

The objective of this study is to explore the associations between obesity, body composition, and the self-reported risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and to examine whether the risk of OSA is related to metabolic abnormalities in children and adolescents aged 6-17 years. Utilizing data from the 2022 to 2023 Beijing Children and Adolescents Health Cohort baseline survey, 5000 school-aged participants were analyzed. OSA risk was assessed via the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire, with anthropometric and body composition measurements taken. Metabolic markers included blood pressure, lipid levels, blood glucose, and uric acid. Associations were analyzed using logistic regression and generalized linear models. Results showed that 88.6% were low-risk and 11.4% were high-risk for OSA. Overweight (aOR 1.53, 95% CI 1.22-1.92), obesity (aOR 1.94, 95% CI 1.57-2.40), and abdominal obesity (aOR 1.59, 95% CI 1.31-1.93) significantly increased OSA risk. High fat mass was a critical factor, while muscle mass was not, especially in those who were overweight and obese. Associations of OSA risk with metabolic abnormalities were non-significant after adjusting for BMI. Our research highlights the significant associations of obesity and body composition with OSA risk, with child BMI influencing the relationship between OSA and metabolic abnormalities. Future research should explore causative relationships and the enduring impacts of OSA on metabolic health in children.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to explore the latent growth trajectory of body mass index (BMI) from birth to 24 months and comprehensively analyze body composition development influencing factor in preschool children. METHODS: This ambidirectional cohort study was conducted in Tianjin, China, from 2017 to 2020, and children's regular medical check-up data from birth to 24 months were retrospectively collected. The growth models were used to fit BMI z-score trajectories for children aged 0-24 months. Crossover analysis and interaction model were used to explore the interaction of influencing factors. RESULTS: We analyzed the growth trajectories of 3217 children, of these, 1493 children with complete follow-up data were included in the influencing factors analysis. Trajectories and parental prepregnancy BMI (ppBMI) were independent factors influencing children's body composition. When paternal ppBMI ≥24 kg/m2, regardless of maternal ppBMI, the risk of overweight and obesity in senior-class children was increased. The high trajectories played a partial mediating role in the association between paternal ppBMI and body composition in preschool children. CONCLUSIONS: BMI growth in children aged 0-24 months can be divided into three latent trajectories: low, middle, and high. These trajectories and parental ppBMI were independent and interactive factors influencing children's body composition. The high trajectories played a partial mediating role in the association between paternal ppBMI and body composition in preschool children. It is necessary to pay attention to the BMI growth level of children aged 0-24 months, which plays an important role in the development of body fat in the future.

In this study, the reduction in the abundance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the fertilizer potential of liquid products from hydrothermally treated cattle manure were investigated. Hydrothermal treatment (HTT) was conducted under different reaction temperatures (125, 150, 175 and 200 °C) and retention times (60, 90 and 120 min). The total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) of the liquid product increased with increasing reaction temperature. The germination index (GI), a measure of the percentage of germination, exceeded 90 % at 125, 150, and 175 °C in diluted samples, while it decreased to 18 % at 200 °C. Although a longer retention time contributed to an increase in TOC of liquid products, it did not increase the GI values. The liquid product should be diluted or adjusted before use as fertilizer to prevent phytotoxicity. In our analysis of ARB and ARGs, E. coli and antibiotic-resistant E. coli were completely reduced after HTT, except for the operating conditions of 125 °C and 60 min. Although both a higher reaction temperature and longer retention time tended to be better for the reduction of ARGs and intI1, it was found that the longer retention time is much more effective than the higher reaction temperature. The reduction of target ARGs and intI1 was 2.9-log under175 °C and 120 min. Comprehensively considering the fertilizer potential of liquid product and the reduction of ARB and ARGs, 175 °C of reaction temperature and 120 min of retention time of operating conditions for HTT were recommended.

Mechanical stress stands as a fundamental factor in the intricate processes governing the growth, development, morphological shaping, and maintenance of skeletal mass. The profound influence of stress in shaping the skeletal framework prompts the assertion that stress essentially births the skeleton. Despite this acknowledgment, the mechanisms by which the skeleton perceives and responds to mechanical stress remain enigmatic. In this comprehensive review, our scrutiny focuses on the structural composition and characteristics of sclerotin, leading us to posit that it serves as the primary structure within the skeleton responsible for bearing and perceiving mechanical stress. Furthermore, we propose that osteocytes within the sclerotin emerge as the principal mechanical-sensitive cells, finely attuned to perceive mechanical stress. And a detailed analysis was conducted on the possible transmission pathways of mechanical stress from the extracellular matrix to the nucleus.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether variations in cranial angles and treatment accuracy during CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery necessitate adjustment of the margins of the planning target volume. Patients and Methods: Data from 66 patients receiving CyberKnife treatment for brain tumors were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were immobilized using a thermoplastic mask and headrest. The cranial angle was measured on planning CT and patients were divided into 2 groups: ≤10° (Group A) and >10° (Group B). Intrafractional motion was recorded using the CyberKnife tracking system over 50 min. Translational and rotational errors were compared between groups, and planning target volume margins were calculated. Results: In Group A, significant translational error differences were found along with the X-axis over time (P < .02). In Group B, significant differences occurred along with the Z-axis (P < .03). No significant rotational or 3-dimensional vector differences were found in either group. Group A had significantly lower Y-axis (P < .045) and roll axis (P < .005) errors compared to Group B. Estimated planning target volume margins in Group A were 0.56 mm (X), 0.46 mm (Y), and 0.47 mm (Z). In Group B, margins were 0.62 mm (X), 0.48 mm (Y), and 0.46 mm (Z). Margins covering 95% of intrafraction motion were 0.49 to 0.50 mm (X, Y, Z) and 0.69 mm (3-dimensional vector) for Group A, and 0.48 to 0.60 mm and 0.79 mm for Group B. With a 1-mm margin, complete coverage was achieved in Group A while 2.1% of vectors in Group B exceeded 1 mm. Conclusion: Adjusting cranial angle to ≤10° during thermoplastic mask molding provided better or similar intrafractional stability compared to >10°.

Objectives: We previously revealed that scorpio and centipede (SC) improve the inflammatory response in asthma, whereas it is unclear whether ferroptosis is involved in this process. Materials and Methods: The asthmatic mouse model was established and lung tissues were collected for histopathological examination. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin- (IL-)1ß, Fe2+, malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), ferritin heavy chain 1(FTH1), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were assessed in asthmatic mice and mouse airway epithelial cells. Results: Our results showed that ferroptosis was induced in asthmatic mice, as evidenced by the reduction of FTH1 and GPX4 expression and the increase of MDA and Fe2+ levels (all P<0.05). Ferrostatin-1 repressed inflammation and ferroptosis of asthmatic mice. Additionally, SC significantly inhibited the levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, MDA, and Fe2+, while enhancing FTH1 and GPX4 expression. However, SC plus erastin showed the reverse results. Moreover, ferroptosis remarkably increased in asthmatic airway epithelial cells, while SC suppressed ferroptosis of the cells (all P<0.05). Conclusion: SC ameliorated asthma by inhibiting the crosstalk between ferroptosis and inflammation in airway epithelial cells.

Background: Clinical decision-making is enhanced by the development of a mathematical model for prognosis prediction. Screening criteria associated with viral shedding time and developing a prediction model facilitate clinical decision-making and are, thus, of great medical value. Methods: This study comprised 631 patients who were hospitalized with mild COVID-19 from a single center and 30 independent variables included. The data set was randomly divided into the training set (80%) and the validation set (20%). The outcome variable included viral shedding time and whether the viral shedding time >14 days, LASSO was used to screen the influencing factors. Results: There were 321 males and 310 females among the 631 cases, with an average age of 62.1 years; the median viral shedding time was 12 days, and 68.8% of patients experienced viral shedding within 14 days, with fever (50.9%) and cough (44.2%) being the most common clinical manifestations. Using LASSO with viral shedding time as the outcome variable, the model with lambda as 0.1592 (λ = 0.1592) and 13 variables (eg the time from diagnosis to admission, constipation, cough, hs-CRP, IL-8, IL-1ß, etc.) was more accurate. Factors were screened by LASSO and multivariable logistic regression with whether the viral shedding time >14 days as the outcome variable, five variables, including the time from diagnosis to admission, CD4 cell count, Ct value of ORF1ab, constipation, and IL-8, were included, and a nomogram was drawn; after model validation, the consistency index was 0.888, the AUC was 0.847, the sensitivity was 0.744, and the specificity was 0.830. Conclusion: A clinical model developed after LASSO regression was used to identify the factors that influence the viral shedding time. The predicted performance of the model was good, and it was useful for the allocation of medical resources.

Background: Accurate assessment of body composition (BC) is important to investigate the development of childhood obesity. A bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) device is portable and inexpensive compared with air displacement plethysmography (ADP) for the assessment of BC and is widely used in children. However, studies of the effectiveness of BIA are few and present different results, especially in pediatric populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agreement between BIA and ADP for estimating BC. Methods: The BC of 981 Chinese children (3-5 years) was measured using the BIA device (SeeHigher BAS-H, China) and ADP (BOD POD). Results: Our results showed that BIA underestimated fat mass (FM) and overestimated fat-free mass (FFM) in normal weight children (P < 0.05), but the opposite trend was shown in children with obesity (P < 0.05). The agreement between FM and FFM measured by the two methods was strong (CCC > 0.80). The linear regression equation of 5-year-old children was constructed. Conclusion: The SeeHigher BAS-H multi-frequency BIA device is a valid device to evaluate BC in Chinese preschool children compared with ADP (BOD POD), especially in 5-year-old children or children with obesity. Further research is needed to standardize the assessment of BC in children.

OBJECTIVE: Dexmedetomidine is a medication that has analgesic, sedative, and anti-anxiety properties. In the clinical, it is often used to prevent common complications associated with strabismus surgery, including postoperative delirium, postoperative nausea and vomiting, postoperative pain, and oculocardiac reflex. However, its effectiveness and side effects of the present studies are different. The sample sizes of the present studies on the prevention of complications of dexmedetomidine are small. Therefore, this study evaluates the efficacy of dexmedetomidine in preventing anesthesia-related complications in strabismus surgery through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Literature was retrieved from 10 commonly used databases and randomized controlled trials published up to May 2022 were sought. The included studies compared the intervention effects of dexmedetomidine versus placebo on anesthesia-related complications in surgery. The occurrence rates of postoperative delirium, postoperative nausea and vomiting, postoperative pain, and oculocardiac reflex in patients undergoing strabismus surgery were evaluated. Statistical analyses and forest plots were generated using Review Manager and STATA software. Binary outcomes were measured using relative risk (RR) with a 95% confidence interval for each outcome. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess the bias and risk in the studies that met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: A total of 13 articles were ultimately included in the analysis, comprising 1,018 patients who underwent strabismus surgery. The dexmedetomidine group, compared to the placebo group, demonstrated significant reductions in the incidence of postoperative delirium (RR = 0.73, P = 0.001), severe postoperative delirium (RR = 0.45, P = 0.005), postoperative nausea and vomiting (RR = 0.48, P < 0.0001), and the need for supplemental analgesia postoperatively (RR = 0.60, P = 0.004). Additionally, subgroup analysis revealed that intravenous administration of dexmedetomidine significantly reduced the incidence of oculocardiac reflex (RR = 0.50, P = 0.001). In contrast, intranasal administration of dexmedetomidine did not have a significant effect on the incidence of oculocardiac reflex (RR = 1.22, P = 0.15). There was a significant difference between the subgroups (P = 0.0005, I2 = 91.7%). CONCLUSION: Among patients undergoing strabismus surgery, the use of dexmedetomidine can alleviate postoperative delirium and reduce the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting, as well as postoperative pain. Moreover, intravenous administration of dexmedetomidine can lower the occurrence rate of the oculocardiac reflex.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of factors in the first 1,000 days of life on metabolic phenotypes of obesity in preschool children in a cohort study. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We recruited 3-year-old children for the study. Early life factors included maternal age at delivery, maternal education, prepregnancy BMI, gestational weight gain, gravidity, history of gestational diabetes mellitus, delivery mode, gestational age, family history of metabolic disorders, paternal education, annual family income, child sex, birth weight, and breastfeeding duration. According to BMI and metabolic status, children were classified as metabolically healthy (no metabolic risk factors) with normal weight (MHNW), metabolically unhealthy (one or more metabolic risk factors) with normal weight (MUNW), metabolically healthy with overweight or obesity (MHO), and metabolically unhealthy with overweight or obesity (MUO). RESULTS: We recruited 3,822 children for the study, with 3,015 analyzed. Accelerated BMI z score growth rate between 6 and 24 months was associated with MHO (ß = 0.022; 95% CI 0.009, 0.036) and MUO (ß = 0.037; 95% CI 0.018, 0.056). Maternal overweight (odds ratio [OR] 3.16; 95% CI 1.55, 6.42) and obesity (OR 8.14; 95% CI 3.73, 17.76) before pregnancy and macrosomia (OR 2.47; 95% CI 1.32, 4.59) were associated with MHO, and maternal obesity before pregnancy (OR 6.35; 95% CI 2.17, 18.52) increased the risk of MUO. CONCLUSIONS: Early life factors, such as maternal obesity and accelerated BMI growth rate between 6 and 24 months, were related not only to MHO but also to MUO. Children with these early life factors should be given interventions for weight control to prevent metabolic abnormalities.

Background: Lack of adequate objectivity and universality, available models are still difficult to be applied to clinical practice in predicting occult cervical metastasis of early oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Taking abnormal metabolic state into consideration, the current model is helpful to distinguish those patients with or without occult cervical metastasis. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 330 OSCC patients initially diagnosed cT1-2N0M0 stage and received neck dissection from January 2020 to July 2022. The occult cervical metastasis was identified by pathological examination.. After screening independent risk factors using logistic regression, patients were divided into training and validation cohorts at the ratio of 2:1 randomly, and a novel diagnostic model was constructed. Performances of this model were evaluated by the area under the curve (AUC), calibrating curve, decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve (CIC). Results: Of the 330 included patients {age mean [standard deviation (SD)], 61.24 (12.99) years; 202 (61.2%) males}, 49 (14.8%) had occult nodal metastasis. Five variables, including body mass index (BMI) [high odds ratio (OR): 1.132; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.019-1.258, P=0.021], primary tumor site (tongue & floor of mouth (TF) OR: 3.756; 95% CI: 1.295-10.898, P=0.015), depth of invasion (DOI) (5-10 mm OR: 2.973; 95% CI: 1.266-6.981; P=0.012), pathological differentiation (Poor differentiation OR: 2.65; 95% CI: 1.341-5.239; P=0.005), and diabetes (OR: 3.123; 95% CI: 1.23-7.929; P=0.017) were screened to establish the predictive model. In training cohort (n=220), this model achieved an AUC of 0.814 and had a sensitivity of 78.1% and specificity of 70.2%. Calibration plots showed favorable consistency between the prediction of the model and actual observations (Hosmer-Lemeshow value >0.05). Decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve (CIC) showed the model was clinically useful and had better discriminative ability under the threshold probability of 0.5. Above evaluations were verified in the validation cohort (n=110). Compared to previous reported models, the concordance index (C-index), net reclassification index (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) values were superior in both training and validation cohorts (P<0.05). Conclusions: This constructed model might have reference value for clinicians in making neck management decisions of early OSCC patients.

Purpose: Wearing a mask during the coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic (COVID-19) is a preventive way to reduce droplet and aerosol transmission. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the position error of wearing a surgical mask during radiotherapy in head and neck cancer patients. Patients and Methods: We collected and analyzed 2351 kV X-ray image records of 81 patients with head and neck cancer who underwent image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT). Patients with/without a surgical mask were divided into the head-neck (HN) mask group and head-neck-shoulder (HNS) mask group. The position error in the X (left-right), Y (superior-inferior), Z (anterior-posterior), 3D (three dimensional) vectors, as well as the pitch and yaw axes were compared between the four groups. Results: We found that patients wearing surgical masks in the HN mask group showed no significant differences in the mean position error of the different types of headrest (p>0.05). In the HNS mask group, only the type C headrest group showed significant differences (P < 0.05). The X axis values were -0.05±0.07 and -0.11± 0.01 cm (P = 0.04), and the pitch axis values were 0.34±0.29° and 0.83±0.08° (P = 0.01). Conclusion: The mean position error of most patients wearing surgical masks was not greater than patients without a surgical mask. Patients wearing while receiving treatment is a low-cost and easy-to-implement prevention method.

Importance: In 2009, the US National Academy of Medicine (NAM) released revised gestational weight gain (GWG) guidelines, which were established primarily for White North American women and may be unsuitable for Asian women. In 2021, the Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS) released its GWG guidelines, but their applicability requires re-examination. Objective: To compare the differences between the CNS and NAM recommendations for GWG in association with health outcomes in the offspring of Chinese women. Design, Setting, and Participants: In this bidirectional cohort study, children in China were recruited at age 3 years from 2017 to 2018, with 2 follow-up visits over the next 2 years (between September 2017 and September 2020). Information during pregnancy was retrieved from medical records. Data analysis was performed from October 2021 to January 2022. Main Outcomes and Measures: GWG was classified as insufficient, appropriate, or excessive according to the CNS and NAM guidelines separately. Children's height, weight, fat mass, fat-free mass, and percentage of body fat were measured at each visit. Body mass index, fat mass index, fat-free mass index, weighted κ score, risk ratio values, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) were calculated. Results: A total of 3822 children (1996 boys and 1826 girls; mean [SD] age, 3.79 [0.30] years) were enrolled; after exclusions, 3170 term singleton children were recruited and were followed at 4 and 5 years of age. According to the CNS guidelines, the prevalence rates were 14.1% for insufficient GWG, 48.1% for appropriate GWG, and 37.9% for excessive GWG, whereas the rates according to NAM guidelines were 39.7% for insufficient GWG, 37.2% for appropriate GWG, and 23.1% for excessive GWG. The weighted κ value for the classification agreement between the 2 guidelines was 0.530 (95% CI, 0.510-0.550). For the appropriate GWG group, the rates for low nutritional levels did not differ between the 2 guidelines, but the rates for high nutritional levels were significantly lower under CNS guidelines than under NAM guidelines. When the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV with respect to the mothers who maintained appropriate GWG were used to estimate the nonhigh nutritional status of their offspring, generally higher values based on the CNS guidelines were found compared with those based on the NAM recommendations. Conclusions and Relevance: These findings suggest that the GWG recommendations promulgated by the NAM are higher than the CNS guidelines, with the latter more suitable for Chinese women.

To assess the relationship between fat mass percentage (FMP) and glucose metabolism in children aged 0−18 years we performed a systematic review of the literature on Medline/PubMed, SinoMed, Embase and Cochrane Library using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines up to 12 October 2021 for observational studies that assessed the relationship of FMP and glucose metabolism. Twenty studies with 18,576 individuals were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that FMP was significantly associated with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (r = 0.08, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.04−0.13, p < 0.001), fasting plasma insulin (INS) (r = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.37−0.57, p < 0.001), and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA)- insulin resistance (IR) (r = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.33−0.53, p < 0.001). The subgroup analysis according to country or overweight and obesity indicated that these associations remained significant between FMP and INS or HOMA-IR. Our results demonstrated that there is a positive relationship between FMP and FPG. Moreover, subgroup analysis according to country or overweight and obesity indicated that FMP is significantly associated with INS and HOMA-IR. This is the first known systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the associations of FMP with glucose metabolism in children and adolescents.

Purpose: To assess the relationship between fat-free mass (FFM) and glucose metabolism in children 0-18 years of age. Methods: We performed a systematic review of the literature on Medline/PubMed, SinoMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines to 12 October 2021; this encompassed observational studies in which the relationship between FFM and glucose metabolism was assessed. Correlation coefficient (r), regression coefficient (ß), and odds ratio (OR) values in the studies were extracted and recorded as the primary data. "Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality" quality-assessment forms recommended for cross-sectional/prevalence studies were applied to evaluate the quality of the selected studies, and we executed R software to combine the pooled data. Results: We included eight studies comprising 13,282 individuals, five of which involved the assessment of the relationship between FFM and blood glucose, and four on the relationship between FFM and insulin resistance (IR). Our results showed that FFM was significantly associated with fasting plasma insulin levels (r = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.30-0.39, P < 0.001). Due to high heterogeneity or insufficient quantity of data, the studies of the relationship between FFM and fasting plasma glucose, HOMA-IR, or HbA1c were not congruent, and were therefore not suitable for meta-analysis. Conclusion: Our results indicated that FFM was significantly associated with fasting plasma insulin levels. As far as we have determined, this is the first-ever systematic review and meta-analysis of the associations between FFM and glucose metabolism in children and adolescents; and our results thus provide novel information to fill a gap in the literature in this area. This study aimed to examine the association of cesarean delivery with trajectories of growth and body composition in preschool children. This ambidirectional cohort study was conducted between 2017 and 2020 in China. Information on the delivery mode, weight, and length/height of the children measured at routine healthcare visits was obtained from maternal and child health records. For three years while in kindergarten, children's body mass index (BMI), fat mass index (FMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI), and percentage of body fat (FM%) were repeatedly measured. A BMI z score (zBMI) was calculated and standardized to WHO measures, and overweight and obesity were defined using the WHO reference. After adjustment for maternal age, maternal education, annual family income, prepregnancy BMI, gestational weight gain, gravidity, parity, gestational age, child sex, birthweight, breastfeeding duration, and the parent-reported dietary intake of the children, children born via cesarean delivery (n = 1992) versus those born vaginally (n = 1578) had higher zBMI growth rates beyond 36 months (ß: 0.003; 95% CI: 0.001, 0.005 SD units/month) and elevated levels of FMI (ß: 0.097; 95% CI: 0.026, 0.168 kg/m2), FM% (ß: 0.402; 95% CI: 0.058, 0.745%) and zBMI (ß: 0.073; 95% CI: 0.012, 0.133 units), but not FFMI (ß: 0.022; 95% CI: -0.022, 0.066 kg/m2). The adjusted OR of overweight and obesity was 1.21 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.40). Cesarean delivery likely elevated zBMI growth rates and increased the risk of overweight and obesity in preschool children, with the elevation of fat mass but not fat-free mass.

To address the problem of automatic identification of fine-grained fracture types, in this paper, we propose a novel framework using 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) to learn fracture features from voxelized bone models which are obtained by establishing isomorphic mapping from fractured bones to a voxelized template. The network, which is named FractureNet, consists of four discriminators forming a multi-stage hierarchy. Each discriminator includes multiple sub-classifiers. These sub-classifiers are chained by two kinds of feature chains (feature map chain and classification feature chain) in the form of a full m-ary tree to perform multi-stage classification tasks. The features learned and classification results obtained at previous stages serve as prior knowledge for current learning and classification. All sub-classifiers are jointly learned in an end-to-end network via a multi-stage loss function integrating losses of the four discriminators. To make our FractureNet more robust and accurate, a data augmentation strategy termed r-combination with constraints is further proposed on the basis of an adjacency relation and a continuity relation between voxels to create a large-scale fracture dataset of voxel models. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method can recognize various fracture types in patients accurately and effectively, and enables significant improvements over the state-of-the-arts on a variety of fracture recognition tasks. Moreover, ancillary experiments on the CIFAR-10 and the PadChest datasets at large scales further support the superior performance of the proposed FractureNet.

Antibiotic compounds have caused serious environmental concerns. In this study, we developed an effective technology for treatment of chlortetracycline (CTC), a widely used antibiotic compound. A natural heteroatom-doped spent tea leaves-based biochar (STLB) with excellent adsorption and catalytic property was prepared by simple thermal treatment. An adsorption-promoted persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (PS-AOP) using STLB was studied for CTC removal. The results showed that the as-prepared STLB presented favorable adsorption affinity towards CTC with the maximum adsorption capacity of 627 mg g-1. Meanwhile, CTC enriched on the surface of STLB was good for in-situ decomposition of CTC and nearly 97.4 % of CTC was removed within 30 min of pre-adsorption and 60 min of subsequent degradation. The STLB had excellent recyclability and wide pH tolerance range of 3.0-9.0 in combined pre-adsorption and PS-AOP. Reactive oxygen species analysis confirmed that CTC degradation was mainly due to non-radical (singlet oxygen, 1O2) and radicals (SO4- and OH). This study suggests that STLB is a promising adsorption-enhanced PS activator for the treatment of refractory wastewater and also provides a strategy of waste control by spent tea leaves.

Gene transcription is a complex multistep biochemical process, which can create memory between individual reaction events. On the other hand, many inducible genes, when activated by external cues, are often coregulated by several competitive pathways with crosstalk. This raises an unexplored question: how do molecular memory and crosstalk together affect gene expressions? To address this question, we introduce a queuing model of stochastic transcription, where two crossing signaling pathways are used to direct gene activation in response to external signals and memory functions to model multistep reaction processes involved in transcription. We first establish, based on the total probability principle, the chemical master equation for this queuing model, and then we derive, based on the binomial moment approach, exact expressions for statistical quantities (including distributions) of mRNA, which provide insights into the roles of crosstalk and memory in controlling the mRNA level and noise. We find that molecular memory of gene activation decreases the mRNA level but increases the mRNA noise, and double activation pathways always reduce the mRNA noise in contrast to a single pathway. In addition, we find that molecular memory can make the mRNA bimodality disappear.
