RESUMO

In response to the pressing need for more efficient and targeted cancer therapies, this study presents the development of biodegradable hydroxyapatite/polyaniline (HAp/PANI) nanocomposite drug carriers for near-infrared (NIR)-induced drug delivery. The synthesis involved loading polyaniline onto mesoporous hydroxyapatite spheres, resulting in high drug loading capacity and tunable NIR responsiveness. The HAp/PANI spheres exhibited superior photothermal properties compared to pristine HAp under NIR irradiation, along with excellent biocompatibility. Importantly, the drug release behavior could be precisely controlled by adjusting NIR power and irradiation time, leading to enhanced anticancer efficacy against HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells. These findings highlight the potential of HAp/PANI mesoporous spheres as promising drug carriers for NIR-responsive cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are critical factors that limit the effectiveness of gastric cancer (GC) therapy. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are confirmed as important regulators of many cancers. However, their role in regulating CSC-like properties of GC remains largely unknown. Our study aimed to investigate the role of circUBA2 in CSC maintenance and the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: We identified circUBA2 as an upregulated gene using circRNA microarray analysis. qRT-PCR was used to examine the circUBA2 levels in normal and GC tissues. In vitro and in vivo functional assays were performed to validate the role of circUBA2 in proliferation, migration, metastasis and CSC-like properties of GC cell. The relationship between circUBA2, miR-144-5p and STC1 was characterised using bioinformatics analysis, a dual fluorescence reporter system, FISH, and RIP assays. RESULTS: CircUBA2 expression was significantly increased in GC tissues, and patients with GC with high circUBA2 expression had a poor prognosis. CircUBA2 enhances CSC-like properties of GC, thereby promoting cell proliferation, migration, and metastasis. Mechanistically, circUBA2 promoted GC malignancy and CSC-like properties by acting as a sponge for miR-144-5p to upregulate STC1 expression and further activate the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. More importantly, the ability of circUBA2 to enhance CSC-like properties was inhibited by tocilizumab, a humanised Interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R) antibody. Thus, circUBA2 knockdown and tocilizumab synergistically inhibited CSC-like properties. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated the critical role of circUBA2 in regulating CSC-like properties in GC. CircUBA2 may be a promising prognostic biomarker for GC.

Anxiety disorder is a major symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with a comorbidity rate of ~40%. However, the neural mechanisms of the emergence of anxiety in ASD remain unclear. In our study, we found that hyperactivity of basolateral amygdala (BLA) pyramidal neurons (PNs) in Shank3 InsG3680 knock-in (InsG3680+/+) mice is involved in the development of anxiety. Electrophysiological results also showed increased excitatory input and decreased inhibitory input in BLA PNs. Chemogenetic inhibition of the excitability of PNs in the BLA rescued the anxiety phenotype of InsG3680+/+ mice. Further study found that the diminished control of the BLA by medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and optogenetic activation of the mPFC-BLA pathway also had a rescue effect, which increased the feedforward inhibition of the BLA. Taken together, our results suggest that hyperactivity of the BLA and alteration of the mPFC-BLA circuitry are involved in anxiety in InsG3680+/+ mice.

Objective: This study aimed to search and analyze relevant evidence on perioperative activities in patients undergoing hepatectomy and provide a summary of the best evidence available. Methods: Comprehensive computer searches were conducted in various databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, BMJ Best Practice, Joanna Briggs Institute, Evidence-Based Health Care Centre Database, US Guidelines Network, UK National Institute of Clinical Medicine, Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, International Guidelines Association Network, New Zealand Clinical Practice Guidelines Network, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database from January 30, 2022 to December 30, 2023. The search included guidelines, expert consensus, evidence summaries, systematic reviews, and original research closely related to the evidence. Results: A total of 11 pieces of evidence were included, consisting of 2 guidelines, 2 expert consensuses, 1 evidence summary, 1 systematic review, and 5 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). From these, five pieces of best evidence were identified. Conclusions: The evidence from the included studies collectively indicates that well-planned perioperative activities are safe and beneficial for patients undergoing hepatectomy. Furthermore, high-quality local guidelines have been established in China, suggesting that healthcare professionals can adopt these practices to accelerate patient recovery and enhance the quality of clinical care.

The gene encoding the NUAK family kinase 1 (NUAK1) is frequently amplified and its expression is upregulated, activating oncogenic signaling in various cancers. However, little is known about its role in gastric cancer (GC). We investigate the mechanistic links among NUAK1, Hedgehog signaling, and tumorigenesis in GC. NUAK1 overexpression is validated in local and public GC cohorts. Patient-derived xenograft and transgenic mouse models demonstrate that NUAK1 depletion or inhibition dramatically ameliorates gastric tumorigenesis. NUAK1 upregulates GLI1 expression by activating STAT5-mediated transcription and stabilizing GLI1 protein. NUAK1 depletion or inhibition impairs cancer cell expansion, tumor formation, and chemotherapy resistance in in vitro and in vivo models. Clinicopathological analysis confirms that upregulated NUAK1 expression correlates with poor prognosis and chemotherapy resistance in human GC. Our findings demonstrate that the signaling axis NUAK1/STAT5/GLI1 promotes cancer cell expansion and tumorigenesis and indicate that NUAK1 is an attractive therapeutic target and prognostic factor in GC.

Intelligence quotient is a vital index to evaluate the ability of an individual to think rationally, learn from experience and deal with the environment effectively. However, limited efforts have been paid to explore the potential associations of intelligence quotient traits with the tissue proteins from the brain, CSF and plasma. The information of protein quantitative trait loci was collected from a recently released genome-wide association study conducted on quantification data of proteins from the tissues including the brain, CSF and plasma. Using the individual-level genotypic data from the UK Biobank cohort, we calculated the polygenic risk scores for each protein based on the protein quantitative trait locus data sets above. Then, Pearson correlation analysis was applied to evaluate the relationships between intelligence quotient traits (including 120 330 subjects for 'fluid intelligence score' and 38 949 subjects for 'maximum digits remembered correctly') and polygenic risk scores of each protein in the brain (17 protein polygenic risk scores), CSF (116 protein polygenic risk scores) and plasma (59 protein polygenic risk scores). The Bonferroni corrected P-value threshold was P < 1.30 × 10-4 (0.05/384). Finally, Mendelian randomization analysis was conducted to test the causal relationships between 'fluid intelligence score' and pre-specific proteins from correlation analysis results. Pearson correlation analysis identified significant association signals between the protein of macrophage-stimulating protein and fluid intelligence in brain and CSF tissues (P brain = 1.21 × 10-8, P CSF = 1.10 × 10-7), as well as between B-cell lymphoma 6 protein and fluid intelligence in CSF (P CSF = 1.23 × 10-4). Other proteins showed close-to-significant associations with the trait of 'fluid intelligence score', such as plasma protease C1 inhibitor (P CSF = 4.19 × 10-4, P plasma = 6.97 × 10-4), and with the trait of 'maximum digits remembered correctly', such as tenascin (P plasma = 3.42 × 10-4). Additionally, Mendelian randomization analysis results suggested that macrophage-stimulating protein (Mendelian randomization-Egger: ß = 0.54, P = 1.64 × 10-61 in the brain; ß = 0.09, P = 1.60 × 10-12 in CSF) had causal effects on fluid intelligence score. We observed functional relevance of specific tissue proteins to intelligence quotient and identified several candidate proteins, such as macrophage-stimulating protein. This study provided a novel insight to the relationship between tissue proteins and intelligence quotient traits.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the longitudinal associations between irisin and executive function among children, as well as the sex difference in this correlation. METHODS: The study involving 330 children aged 6-10 years conducted in Guangzhou, China. Baseline surveys and fasting blood samples were collected in 2017. Plasma irisin concentration was measured using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Executive function was assessed by the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) scale in 2017 and followed up after 2 years. Multivariable linear regression was used for association analysis. RESULTS: The plasma irisin concentration was 9.04±2.18 ng/mL. There was no statistical difference in plasma irisin and change values of BRIEF T-scores between boys and girls. No significant associations were found between plasma irisin and change values of BRIEF T-scores (P > 0.05) in the overall sample. Further subgroup analyses according to sex revealed that plasma irisin was negatively associated with change values of behavior regulation index (BRI, ß=-0.521, 95 %CI: -1.036 ∼ -0.006), emotional control (ß=-0.649, 95 %CI: -1.249 ∼ -0.049), working memory T-scores (ß=-0.774, 95 %CI: -1.350 ∼ -0.199) in girls. Moreover, we firstly identified a sex effect modification in the association of plasma irisin with change values of working memory T-score (Pinterference=0.012). CONCLUSIONS: Higher irisin concentration was associated with better executive function performance in girls. Further studies that included populations in other regions or countries are needed to confirm these findings.

Pregnant women are physiologically prone to glucose intolerance, while the puerperium represents a critical phase for recovery. However, how air pollution disrupts glucose homeostasis during the gestational and early postpartum periods remains unclear. This prospective cohort study conducted an oral glucose tolerance test and measured the insulin levels of 834 pregnant women in Guangzhou, with a follow-up for 443 puerperae at 6-8 weeks postpartum. Residential PM2.5 and five chemical components were estimated by an established spatiotemporal model. The adjusted linear model showed that an IQR increase in gestational PM2.5 exposure was associated with an increase of 0.17 mmol/L (95% CI: 0.06, 0.28) in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and 0.24 (95% CI: 0.05, 0.42) in the insulin resistance index. Postpartum PM2.5 exposure was linked to a 0.17 mmol/L (95% CI: 0.05, 0.28) elevation in FPG per IQR, with a strengthened association found in women with gestational diabetes (Pinteraction = 0.003). In the quantile-based g-computation model, NO3- consistently contributed to the combined effect of PM2.5 components on gestational and postpartum FPG. This study was the first to suggest that PM2.5 components were associated with exacerbated gestational insulin resistance and elevated postpartum FPG. Targeted interventions reducing the emissions of toxic PM2.5 components are essential to improving maternal glucose metabolism.

CircRNAs are covalently closed, single-stranded RNA that form continuous loops and play a crucial role in the initiation and progression of tumors. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are indispensable for cancer development; however, the regulation of cancer stem cell-like properties in gastric cancer (GC) and its specific mechanism remain poorly understood. We elucidate the specific role of Circ-0075305 in GC stem cell properties. Circ-0075305 associated with chemotherapy resistance was identified by sequencing GC cells. Subsequent confirmation in both GC tissues and cell lines revealed that patients with high expression of Circ-0075305 had significantly better overall survival (OS) rates than those with low expression, particularly when treated with postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for GC. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that overexpression of Circ-0075305 can effectively reduce stem cell-like properties and enhance the sensitivity of GC cells to Oxaliplatin compared with the control group. Circ-0075305 promotes RPRD1A expression by acting as a sponge for corresponding miRNAs. The addition of LF3 (a ß-catenin/TCF4 interaction antagonist) confirmed that RPRD1A inhibited the formation of the TCF4-ß-catenin transcription complex through competitive to ß-catenin and suppressed the transcriptional activity of stem cell markers such as SOX9 via the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. This leads to the downregulation of stem cell-like property-related markers in GC. This study revealed the underlying mechanisms that regulate Circ-0075305 in GCSCs and suggests that its role in reducing ß-catenin signaling may serve as a potential therapeutic candidate.

This study took Chinese patent medicine for children included in Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2020 edition and the first supplement), Medicine Catalogue for National Basic Medical Insurance, Work Injury Insurance, and Maternity Insurance(2022 edition), and National Essential Medicines List(2018 edition) as the research objects, so as to sort out the distribution situation, characteristics, and the problems of Chinese patent medicine for children(including child-specific medicines, common medicines for children and adults, and discretionary medicines for children). According to statistics and summary, Chinese patent medicine for children is mainly administered orally, and the dosage forms are mostly traditional dosage forms, such as tablets, granules, capsules, and oral liquids, with mostly bitter or sweet taste. Diseases are mainly classified into pulmonary diseases and spleen and stomach diseases, and varieties of medication without Children's medication safety information or "still unclear" account for a relatively large proportion of the medicines. There are relatively few varieties of Chinese patent medicines for children, poor compliance of child-specific medication, lack of refinement of Chinese patent medicines for children dosage, and lack of information about safe use of medication. It is recommended to update and improve the instruction manuals in a timely manner, develop new varieties of Chinese patent medicine for children, and actively carry out post-marketing evaluation and clinical comprehensive evaluation of Chinese patent medicine for children, so as to provide a reference for the supplement and improvement of the instructions, the comprehensive improvement, the formulation of the catalogue, and the research and development of new Chinese patent medicine for children and ensure the use of medicines for children.

Since depression is common in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, we aimed to explore the specific brain functional network dynamics in ALS patients with depression (ALS-D) compared with healthy controls (HCs) and ALS patients without depressive symptoms (ALS-ND). According to the DSM-V, 32 ALS-D patients were selected from a large and newly diagnosed ALS cohort. Then, 32 demographic- and cognitive-matched ALS-ND patients were also selected, and 64 HCs were recruited. These participants underwent resting-state fMRI scans, and functional connectivity state analysis and dynamic graph theory were applied to evaluate brain functional network dynamics. Moreover, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) was used to quantify depressive symptoms in the ALS-D patients. Four distinct states were identified in the ALS-D patients and controls. Compared with that in HCs, the fraction rate (FR) in state 2 was significantly decreased in ALS-D patients, and the FR in state 4 was significantly increased in ALS-D patients. Compared with that of HCs, the dwell time in state 4 was significantly increased in the ALS-D patients. Moreover, compared with that in the ALS-D patients, the FR in state 3 was significantly decreased in the ALS-ND patients. Among the ALS-D patients, there was the suggestion of a positive association between HDRS scores and dwell time of state 4, but this association did not reach statistical significance (r = 0.354; p = 0.055). Depression is an important feature of ALS patients, and we found a special pattern of brain functional network dynamics in ALS-D patients. Our findings may play an important role in understanding the mechanism underlying depression in ALS patients and help develop therapeutic interventions for depressed ALS patients.

Battery recycling is viewed in China as an important means of achieving primary sustainability goals and greater economic and environmental development. With the notice of high battery recycling intentions through relevant investigations, this study examine the influencing factors of these recycling behaviors of e-bikes citizens by incorporating the place identity and environmental concern into the Extended Normative Activation Model (NAM), which fill the research gap on how place identity and environmental concern affect the batteries recycling behavior. This study proposes that the consequence awareness, personal norms, and attitudes have mediating effect on place identity to the recycling behavior, and the environmental concern has moderating effect on consequence awareness, personal norms, and attitudes to the recycling behavior, respectively. Based on 1068 valid surveys, hypotheses were examined using partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that personal norms and awareness of consequences positively impact e-bike users' intentions to recycle waste batteries, and environmental concerns have no moderating effect on attitude, recycling intention, personal norms, and recycling intention. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed at last.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify candidate loci and genes related to sleep disturbances in depressed individuals and clarify the co-occurrence of sleep disturbances and depression from the genetic perspective. METHODS: The study subjects (including 58,256 self-reported depressed individuals and 6,576 participants with PHQ-9 score ≥ 10, respectively) were collected from the UK Biobank, which were determined based on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and self-reported depression status, respectively. Sleep related traits included chronotype, insomnia, snoring and daytime dozing. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of sleep related traits in depressed individuals were conducted by PLINK 2.0 adjusting age, sex, Townsend deprivation index and 10 principal components as covariates. The CAUSALdb database was used to explore the mental traits associated with the candidate genes identified by the GWAS. RESULTS: GWAS detected 15 loci significantly associated with chronotype in the subjects with self-reported depression, such as rs12736689 at RNASEL (P = 1.00 × 10- 09), rs509476 at RGS16 (P = 1.58 × 10- 09) and rs1006751 at RFX4 (P = 1.54 × 10- 08). 9 candidate loci were identified in the subjects with PHQ-9 ≥ 10, of which 2 loci were associated with insomnia such as rs115379847 at EVC2 (P = 3.50 × 10- 08), and 7 loci were associated with daytime dozing, such as rs140876133 at SMYD3 (P = 3.88 × 10- 08) and rs139156969 at ROBO2 (P = 3.58 × 10- 08). Multiple identified genes, such as RNASEL, RGS16, RFX4 and ROBO2 were reported to be associated with chronotype, depression or cognition in previous studies. CONCLUSION: Our study identified several candidate genes related to sleep disturbances in depressed individuals, which provided new clues for understanding the biological mechanism underlying the co-occurrence of depression and sleep disorders.

Highly crystalline ZSM-23 zeolite, exhibiting a distinctive dumbbell morphology, was synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Bifunctional catalysts, comprising single metals (Pt or Au) and bimetals (Pt-Au), were successfully prepared by using a positional precipitation method. The hydroisomerization of hexadecane served as a model reaction to assess the catalytic performance arising from the synergistic effects of bimetallic active sites. In comparison to single-metal catalysts, 0.3Au0.7Pt/ZSM-23 demonstrated increased n-C16 conversion, while 0.5Au0.5Pt/ZSM-23 exhibited enhanced i-C16 selectivity, achieving the highest i-C16 yield. The bimetallic catalyst not only finely tuned the metal site activity through bimetallic synergy but also achieved a superior balance between metal and acid catalysis, resulting in improved catalytic performance in the n-C16 hydroisomerization. The Pt-Au bimetallic catalyst approached the ideal requirements for a hydroisomerization catalyst, achieving a harmonious balance of metal and acid catalysis.

AIM: To investigate the clinical nursing effect of bispectral index (BIS) monitoring for paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) patients in the neurosurgical intensive care unit (NICU). METHODS: From January 2022 to June 2023, a total of 30 patients with PSH secondary to moderate to severe craniocerebral injury in the NICU were monitored for BIS. The patients' paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity-assessment measure (PSH-AM) scores were recorded. PSH patients generally appear in 3 states: calm state, seizure state, and postmedication state. Thirty PSH patients' BIS values were recorded during the calm period, during the seizure state, and postmedication state, and these 3 different stages' BIS values were divided into groups A, B, and C, using the Kruskal-Wallis H test to compare groups. RESULTS: The Kruskal-Wallis H test yielded a value of H=22.599, P <0.001. H0 was rejected against the test standard of α=0.05, and the BIS values of groups A, B, and C differed. The BIS values of group A and group B differed after a pairwise comparison, and the difference was statistically significant (adjusted P =0.001). Group B and group C had different BIS values, and the difference was statistically significant (adjusted P =0.001); group A and Group C had no difference in BIS values, and the difference was not statistically significant (adjusted P =1.00). CONCLUSIONS: Taking BIS value as the nursing observation index for PSH patients can make nursing work more objective, reasonable, and accurate, reduce the inducing factors of PSH attack, further reduce the attack of PSH, save nursing resources, and help guide the safety assessment of sedative use.

Despite the widely recommended usage of partially hydrolyzed formula (PHF) or extensively hydrolyzed formula (EHF) of milk protein for preventing allergic diseases (ADs), clinical studies have been inconclusive regarding their efficacy compared with that of cow's milk formula (CMF) or breast milk (BM). We aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of PHF or EHF compared with those of CMF or BM on risk of ADs (cow's milk allergy, allergic rhinitis, eczema, asthma, wheeze, food allergy, and sensitization) in children. We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for clinical trials published from inception to 21 October, 2022. We used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to grade the strength of evidence. Overall, 24 trials (10,950 infants) were included, 17 of which specifically included high-risk infants. GRADE was low for the evidence that, compared with CMF, infants early fed with EHF had lower risk of cow's milk allergy at age 0-2 y [relative risk (RR): 0.62; 95% CI: 0.39, 0.99]. Moderate evidence supported that PHF and EHF reduced risk of eczema in children aged younger or older than 2 y, respectively (RR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.52, 0.96; and RR: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.67, 0.94, respectively). We also identified moderate systematic evidence indicating that PHF reduced risk of wheeze at age 0-2 y compared with CMF (RR: 0.50; 95% CI: 0.29, 0.85), but PHF and EHF increased the risk compared with BM (RR: 1.61; 95% CI: 1.11, 2.31; and RR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.26, 2.14). Neither PHF nor EHF had significant effects on other ADs in children of any age. In conclusion, compared with CMF, PHF, or EHF had different preventive effect on cow's milk allergy, eczema, and wheeze. Compared with BM, both PHF and EHF may increase risk of wheeze but not other ADs. Given that most trials included only high-risk infants, more research on non-high-risk infants is warranted before any generalization is attempted. BACKGROUND: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been shown to protect against fine particulate matter <2.5µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5)-induced hazards. However, limited evidence is available for respiratory health, particularly in pregnant women and their offspring. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the association of prenatal exposure to PM2.5 and its chemical components with allergic rhinitis (AR) in children and explore effect modification by maternal erythrocyte PUFAs. METHODS: This prospective birth cohort study involved 657 mother-child pairs from Guangzhou, China. Prenatal exposure to residential PM2.5 mass and its components [black carbon (BC), organic matter (OM), sulfate (SO42-), nitrate (NO3-), and ammonium (NH4+)] were estimated by an established spatiotemporal model. Maternal erythrocyte PUFAs during pregnancy were measured using gas chromatography. The diagnosis of AR and report of AR symptoms in children were assessed up to 2 years of age. We used Cox regression with the quantile-based g-computation approach to assess the individual and joint effects of PM2.5 components and examine the modification effects of maternal PUFA levels. RESULTS: Approximately 5.33% and 8.07% of children had AR and related symptoms, respectively. The average concentration of prenatal PM2.5 was 35.50±5.31 µg/m3. PM2.5 was positively associated with the risk of developing AR [hazard ratio (HR)=1.85; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.16, 2.96 per 5 µg/m3] and its symptoms (HR=1.79; 95% CI: 1.22, 2.62 per 5 µg/m3) after adjustment for confounders. Similar associations were observed between individual PM2.5 components and AR outcomes. Each quintile change in a mixture of components was associated with an adjusted HR of 3.73 (95% CI: 1.80, 7.73) and 2.69 (95% CI: 1.55, 4.67) for AR and AR symptoms, with BC accounting for the largest contribution. Higher levels of n-3 docosapentaenoic acid and lower levels of n-6 linoleic acid showed alleviating effects on AR symptoms risk associated with exposure to PM2.5 and its components. CONCLUSION: Prenatal exposure to PM2.5 and its chemical components, particularly BC, was associated with AR/symptoms in early childhood. BACKGROUND: As the stages of the COVID-19 pandemic evolved, the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and insomnia have increasingly manifested among Chinese college students. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between these symptoms through network analysis among Chinese college students during COVID-19. METHOD: A three-wave cross-sectional survey was conducted at 22 colleges in Guangdong Province, involving 381,152 students during three specific time intervals: T1 (baseline, February 3 to 10, 2020), T2 (19 months after baseline, June 10 to 18, 2021), and T3 (37 months after baseline, March 15 to April 22, 2023). Depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), and insomnia (YSIS) were used separately. We analyzed two key network indices: "Expected influence" and "Bridge expected influence". Network stability was assessed through a case-dropping bootstrap program. RESULT: The effective sample sizes for the three periods were as follows: T1 - 164,101 (103,645 females, 63.2 %), T2 - 86,767 (52,146 females, 60.1 %), and T3 - 130,284 (76,720 females, 58.9 %). Across these three periods, the key central symptoms were "Fatigue" (PHQ4), "Restlessness" (GAD5), "Uncontrollable worrying" (GAD2), "Worry too much" (GAD3) and "Sleep insufficiency" (YSIS6). Notably, "Fatigue" (PHQ4), "Restlessness" (GAD5) and "Irritability" (GAD6) consistently served as bridge symptoms. In the T1 and T2 period, "Motor" (PHQ8) acted as a bridge symptom but weakened in T3. CONCLUSION: Throughout the three periods, the mental health issues among Chinese college students displayed characteristics of somatization within the depression-anxiety-insomnia comorbidity network. Over time, anxiety symptoms appeared to become more prominent. Consequently, this study highlights the importance of accurately identifying and promptly intervening in these core symptoms of mental health among college students, as these symptoms may evolve across different stages of a pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Using in vivo neuroimaging techniques, growing evidence has demonstrated that the choroid plexus (CP) volume is enlarged in patients with several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. However, although animal and postmortem findings suggest that CP abnormalities are likely important pathological mechanisms underlying amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the third most common neurodegenerative disease, no available study has been conducted to thoroughly assess CP abnormalities and their clinical relevance in vivo in ALS patients to date. Thus, we aimed to determine whether in vivo CP enlargement may occur in ALS patients. We also aimed to identify the relationships of CP volume with clinical disabilities and blood-CSF barrier (BCSFB) permeability in ALS patients. METHODS: In this retrospective study, based on structural MRI data, CP volume was assessed using a Gaussian mixture model and underwent further manual correction in 155 ALS patients and 105 age- and sex-matched HCs from October 2021 to April 2023. The ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R) was used to assess clinical disability. The CSF/serum albumin quotient (Qalb) was used to assess BCSFB permeability. Moreover, all the ALS patients completed genetic testing, and according to genetic testing, the ALS patients were further divided into genetic ALS subgroup and sporadic ALS subgroup. RESULTS: We found that compared with HCs, ALS patients had a significantly higher CP volume (p < 0.001). Moreover, compared with HCs, CP volume was significantly increased in both ALS patients with and without known genetic mutations after family-wise error correction (p = 0.006 and p < 0.001, respectively), while there were no significant differences between the two ALS groups. Furthermore, the CP volume was significantly correlated with the ALSFRS-r score (r = -0.226; p = 0.005) and the Qalb (r = 0.479; p < 0.001) in ALS patients. CONCLUSION: Our study first demonstrates CP enlargement in vivo in ALS patients, and continues to suggest an important pathogenetic role for CP abnormalities in ALS. Moreover, assessing CP volume is likely a noninvasive and easy-to-implement approach for screening BCSFB dysfunction in ALS patients.

Background: As the adoption of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology in rehabilitation training is gradually maturing, the rehabilitation climbing walls combined with BCI technology are applied in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) adoption research. Methods: From January 2022 to January 2023, a total of 100 AIS patients were assigned into a control group (group C, rehabilitation climbing wall training) and an observation group (group B, rehabilitation climbing wall training based on BCI technology) equally and randomly. The therapeutic effects of the patients were analyzed, including the Cobb angle, waist range of motion, and quality of life. Results: The Cobb angles of all patients after three months of treatment were obviously smaller than those preoperatively, and the Cobb angle of patients in group B was smaller than that of group C. The improvement rate of the Cobb angle of patients in group B was substantially superior to that in group C (95%CI 17.8-42.6, P = .034). Moreover, patients in groups C and B had more extensive waist flexion, tension, and left ranges. Suitable lateral regions after three months of treatment than before and lower lumbar dysfunction scores, and group B was significantly better than group C (95%CI 20.3-35.4, P = .042). After three months of treatment, all patients' general condition, physical pain, physiological function, and mental health scores were higher than those preoperatively, and the scores in group B were substantially superior to those in group C (95%CI 51.3-84.2, P = .022). Furthermore, the total effective rate of patients in group B after three months was markedly superior to that in group C (96% vs. 82%) (95%CI 79.3-97.2, P = .014). Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that the rehabilitation climbing wall training method combined with brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has significant therapeutic effects on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients. The intervention was found to effectively reduce the Cobb angle, increase the lumbar range of motion, improve lumbar function, and enhance the quality of life of the patients. These findings indicate that the adoption of rehabilitation climbing walls combined with BCI technology can be clinically valuable in the treatment of AIS. This approach holds promise in improving the rehabilitation outcomes for AIS patients, providing a non-invasive alternative to surgical interventions.
