LAY ABSTRACT: The Transporters App is an intervention programme with 15 animated episodes that teach emotion recognition skills to autistic children between 4 and 6 years of age. Each episode contains a story depicting social interactions between characters in the form of a vehicle, with human faces grafted on to each of them. Each episode teaches a specific emotion in a story context. Autistic children watched at least three episodes at home for about 15 min daily for a month, with parental guidance. Its automated, home-based format is cost-saving and readily accessible. This study translated The Transporters to a Cantonese-Chinese version. Results showed a significant improvement in emotion recognition following viewing The Transporters in a group of Hong Kong Chinese autistic children, between 4 and 6 years of age, with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (n = 48) relative to a control group (n = 24). A non-autistic group (n = 23) showed that the autistic children scored lower in emotion recognition pre-intervention. Post-intervention, the autistic children had improved in emotion recognition to the level of the non-autistic children. The autistic children in the intervention groups also generalized their learning to novel situations/characters not taught within The Transporters. There was no dosage effect, with the standard recommended number of episodes viewed being sufficient to achieve significant improvement. This study confirms the effectiveness of The Transporters for Chinese autistic children and contributes to the literature/practice by expanding the range of applicability of The Transporters to autistic children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which is important given the high rate of co-occurrence between autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Hermosillo et al. (J Neurosci 31: 10019-10022, 2011) have suggested that action planning of hand movements impacts decisions about the temporal order judgments regarding vibrotactile stimulation of the hands. Specifically, these authors reported that the crossed-hand effect, a confusion about which hand is which when held in a crossed posture, gradually reverses some 320 ms before the arms begin to move from an uncrossed to a crossed posture or vice versa, such that the crossed-hand is reversed at the time of movement onset in anticipation of the movement's end position. However, to date, no other study has attempted to replicate this dynamic crossed-hand effect. Therefore, in the present study, we conducted four experiments to revisit the question whether preparing uncrossed-to-crossed or crossed-to-uncrossed movements affects the temporo-spatial perception of tactile stimulation of the hands. We used a temporal order judgement (TOJ) task at different time stages during action planning to test whether TOJs are more difficult with crossed than uncrossed hands ("static crossed-hand effect") and, crucially, whether planning to cross or uncross the hands shows the opposite pattern of difficulties ("dynamic crossed-hand effect"). As expected, our results confirmed the static crossed-hand effect. However, the dynamic crossed-hand effect could not be replicated. In addition, we observed that participants delayed their movements with late somatosensory stimulation from the TOJ task, even when the stimulations were meaningless, suggesting that the TOJ task resulted in cross-modal distractions. Whereas the current findings are not inconsistent with a contribution of motor signals to posture perception, they cast doubt on observations that motor signals impact state estimates well before movement onset.

OBJECTIVE: To propose a set of internationally harmonized procedures and methods for assessing neurocognitive functions, smell, taste, mental, and psychosocial health, and other factors in adults formally diagnosed with COVID-19 (confirmed as SARS-CoV-2 + WHO definition). METHODS: We formed an international and cross-disciplinary NeuroCOVID Neuropsychology Taskforce in April 2020. Seven criteria were used to guide the selection of the recommendations' methods and procedures: (i) Relevance to all COVID-19 illness stages and longitudinal study design; (ii) Standard, cross-culturally valid or widely available instruments; (iii) Coverage of both direct and indirect causes of COVID-19-associated neurological and psychiatric symptoms; (iv) Control of factors specifically pertinent to COVID-19 that may affect neuropsychological performance; (v) Flexibility of administration (telehealth, computerized, remote/online, face to face); (vi) Harmonization for facilitating international research; (vii) Ease of translation to clinical practice. RESULTS: The three proposed levels of harmonization include a screening strategy with telehealth option, a medium-size computerized assessment with an online/remote option, and a comprehensive evaluation with flexible administration. The context in which each harmonization level might be used is described. Issues of assessment timelines, guidance for home/remote assessment to support data fidelity and telehealth considerations, cross-cultural adequacy, norms, and impairment definitions are also described. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed recommendations provide rationale and methodological guidance for neuropsychological research studies and clinical assessment in adults with COVID-19. We expect that the use of the recommendations will facilitate data harmonization and global research. Research implementing the recommendations will be crucial to determine their acceptability, usability, and validity.
