To predict the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of crude protein (CP) in dogs we developed an in vitro system using an in vitro digestion method and a statistical analysis. The experimental diets used chicken meat powder as the protein source, with CP levels of 20% (22.01%, analyzed CP value as dry-based), 30% (31.35%, analyzed CP value as dry-based), and 40% (41.34%, analyzed CP value as dry-based). To simulate in vivo digestive processes a static in vitro digestion was performed in two steps; stomach and small intestine. To analyze ATTD the total fecal samples were collected in eight neutered beagle dogs during the experimental period. CP digestibility was calculated by measuring CP levels in dog food, in vitro undigested fraction, and dog feces. In result, CP digestibility at both in vivo and in vitro was increased with increasing dietary CP levels. To estimate in vivo digestibility the co-relation of in vivo ATTD and in vitro digestibility was investigated statistically and a regression equation was developed to predict the CP ATTD (% = 2.5405 × in vitro CP digestibility (%) + 151.8). The regression equation was evaluated its feasibility by using a commercial diet. The predicted CP digestibility which was calculated by the regression equation showed high index of similarity (100.16%) with that of in vivo in dogs. With that, it would be a feasible non-animal method to predict in vivo CP digestibility by using in vitro digestion method and the proposed linear regression equation in adult dogs.

Introduction: Spondylosis deformans is a non-inflammatory osteophytic reaction that develops to re-establish the stability of weakened joints between intervertebral discs. However, assessing these changes using radiography is subjective and difficult. In human medicine, attempts have been made to use artificial intelligence to accurately diagnose difficult and ambiguous diseases in medical imaging. Deep learning, a form of artificial intelligence, is most commonly used in medical imaging data analysis. It is a technique that utilizes neural networks to self-learn and extract features from data to diagnose diseases. However, no deep learning model has been developed to detect vertebral diseases in canine thoracolumbar and lumbar lateral X-ray images. Therefore, this study aimed to establish a segmentation model that automatically recognizes the vertebral body and spondylosis deformans in the thoracolumbar and lumbar lateral radiographs of dogs. Methods: A total of 265 thoracolumbar and lumbar lateral radiographic images from 162 dogs were used to develop and evaluate the deep learning model based on the attention U-Net algorithm to segment the vertebral body and detect spondylosis deformans. Results: When comparing the ability of the deep learning model and veterinary clinicians to recognize spondylosis deformans in the test dataset, the kappa value was 0.839, indicating an almost perfect agreement. Conclusions: The deep learning model developed in this study is expected to automatically detect spondylosis deformans on thoracolumbar and lumbar lateral radiographs of dogs, helping to quickly and accurately identify unstable intervertebral disc space sites. Furthermore, the segmentation model developed in this study is expected to be useful for developing models that automatically recognize various vertebral and disc diseases.

Background: Panax ginseng, one of the valuable perennial medicinal plants, stores numerous pharmacological substrates in its storage roots. Given its perennial growth habit, organ regeneration occurs each year, and cambium stem cell activity is necessary for secondary growth and storage root formation. Cytokinin (CK) is a phytohormone involved in the maintenance of meristematic cells for the development of storage organs; however, its physiological role in storage-root secondary growth remains unknown. Methods: Exogenous CK was repeatedly applied to P. ginseng, and morphological and histological changes were observed. RNA-seq analysis was used to elucidate the transcriptional network of CK that regulates P. ginseng growth and development. The HISTIDINE KINASE 3 (PgHK3) and RESPONSE REGULATOR 2 (PgRR2) genes were cloned in P. ginseng and functionally analyzed in Arabidopsis as a two-component system involved in CK signaling. Results: Phenotypic and histological analyses showed that CK increased cambium activity and dormant axillary bud formation in P. ginseng, thus promoting storage-root secondary growth and bud formation. The evolutionarily conserved two-component signaling pathways in P. ginseng were sufficient to restore CK signaling in the Arabidopsis ahk2/3 double mutant and rescue its growth defects. Finally, RNA-seq analysis of CK-treated P. ginseng roots revealed that plant-type cell wall biogenesis-related genes are tightly connected with mitotic cell division, cytokinesis, and auxin signaling to regulate CK-mediated P. ginseng development. Conclusion: Overall, we identified the CK signaling-related two-component systems and their physiological role in P. ginseng. This scientific information has the potential to significantly improve the field-cultivation and biotechnology-based breeding of ginseng.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This parallel, single-center, pragmatic, randomized controlled study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of motion style acupuncture treatment (MSAT; a combination of acupuncture and Doin therapy) to reduce pain and improve the functional disability of patients with acute low back pain (aLBP) due to road traffic accidents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six patients with aLBP admitted to the Haeundae Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine in South Korea due to traffic accidents were treated with integrative Korean medicine (IKM) with additional 3-day MSAT sessions during hospitalization (MSAT group, 48 patients) or without (control group, 48 patients), and followed up for 90 days. RESULTS: The mean numeric rating scale (NRS) scores of low back pain (LBP) of the MSAT and control groups were both 6.7 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 6.3, 7.1) at baseline. After completing the third round of all applicable treatment sessions (the primary endpoint in this study), the mean NRS scores of the MSAT and control groups were 3.76 (95% CI: 3.54, 3.99) and 5.32 (95% CI: 5.09, 5.55), respectively. The difference in the mean NRS score between the two groups was 1.56 (95% CI: 1.25, 1.87). CONCLUSION: IKM treatment combined with MSAT can reduce pain and improve the range of motion of patients with aLBP. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial is registered at ClinicalTrial.gov (NCT04956458).

CONTEXT: Rotator cuff tear is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain and has become a prominent disease most frequently treated by surgery. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the long-term therapeutic effect of integrative Korean medicine (KM) as a conservative treatment in treating rotator cuff tears. DESIGN: A multicenter observational study. SETTINGS: The settings involve four regional network KM hospitals. PATIENTS: The study participants are 288 patients aged 19-70 with rotator cuff tear identified by radiologist based on magnetic resonance imaging who received integrative KM treatment for the chief complaint of shoulder pain between 1 January 2015 and 31 March 2020. INTERVENTION: None. MAIN OUTCOMES: The primary outcome was the pain score in the affected shoulder, measured by the numeric rating scale (NRS). The secondary outcomes were Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), 5-Level Quality of life: EuroQol 5-Dimension (EQ-5D-5L), Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC), and range of motion (ROM) scores. RESULTS: Eligible patients for MCID achievement analysis for minimally clinical important change were 167, and 109 completed the follow-up survey. The mean NRS pain score in the affected shoulder was 5.80 ± 1.27 at admission, 3.50 ± 1.32 at discharge, and 3.83 ± 2.04 at follow-up.The mean SPADI score was 51.48 ± 20.18 at admission, 37.76 ± 19.23 at discharge, and 24.26 ± 21.80 at follow-up. The improvement at discharge (P-value < 0.001) and follow-up (P-value < 0.001) compared to those at admission was statistically significant. The results also presented a significant improvement in ROM for all motions at discharge after treatment (P-value < 0.001). The number of patients who achieved minimal clinically important difference in NRS was 116 (69.5%) at discharge and 71 (65.1%) at follow-up, and in SPADI was 82 (50.9%) at discharge and 77 (70.6%) at follow-up. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggested that integrative KM treatment can help improve pain, functional impairment, QoL, and ROM in patients with a rotator cuff tear TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT04566939.

The browning of white adipocytes may be an innovative approach to address obesity. This study investigated the effects of rabbit meat extract on 3T3-L1 adipocytes, with a specific emphasis on inducing browning. The browning effects of rabbit meat extract were evaluated by analyzing genes specifically expressed in 3T3-L1 adipocytes using quantitative PCR and immunoblotting. Rabbit meat extract increased the expression of brown adipocyte-specific markers, UCP1 and PGC1α, and mitochondrial biogenesis factors, TFAM and NRF1, without affecting cell viability in fully differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Moreover, adipocyte differentiation and the triglyceride content were decreased; hormone-sensitive lipase activity was promoted. Rabbit meat extract activated the AMPK pathway in the differentiated 3T3-L1 cells. However, in adipocytes treated with rabbit meat extract, the expression of genes related to browning was reduced by the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibitor, dorsomorphin dihydrochloride. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that rabbit meat extract induces the browning of white adipocytes via the activation of the AMPK pathway, thereby demonstrating its therapeutic potential in preventing obesity.

As an urgent international challenge, the sudden change in climate due to global warming needs to be addressed in the near future. This can be achieved through a reduction in fossil fuel utilization and through carbon sequestration, which reduces the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. In this study, a self-sustainable impact sensor is proposed through implementing a triboelectric nanogenerator with a CaCO3 contact layer fabricated via a CO2 absorption method. The triboelectric polarity of CaCO3 with the location between the polyimide and the paper and the effects of varying the crystal structure are investigated first. The impact sensing characteristics are then confirmed at various input frequencies and under applied forces. Further, the high mechanical strength and strong adherence of CaCO3 on the surface of the device are demonstrated through enhanced durability compared to the unmodified device. For the intended application, the as-fabricated sensor is used to detect the turning state of the paper Ddakji in a slap match game using a supervised learning algorithm based on a support vector machine presenting a high classification accuracy of 95.8%. The robust CaCO3-based triboelectric device can provide an eco-friendly advantage due to its self-powered characteristics for impact sensing and carbon sequestration.

The mechanisms underlying the ability of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) to rapidly activate lineage-specific genes during differentiation remain largely unknown. Through multiple CRISPR-activation screens, we discovered human ESCs have pre-established transcriptionally competent chromatin regions (CCRs) that support lineage-specific gene expression at levels comparable to differentiated cells. CCRs reside in the same topological domains as their target genes. They lack typical enhancer-associated histone modifications but show enriched occupancy of pluripotent transcription factors, DNA demethylation factors, and histone deacetylases. TET1 and QSER1 protect CCRs from excessive DNA methylation, while HDAC1 family members prevent premature activation. This "push and pull" feature resembles bivalent domains at developmental gene promoters but involves distinct molecular mechanisms. Our study provides new insights into pluripotency regulation and cellular plasticity in development and disease. One sentence summary: We report a class of distal regulatory regions distinct from enhancers that confer human embryonic stem cells with the competence to rapidly activate the expression of lineage-specific genes.

This study investigated the effects of corn resistant starch (RS) on the anti-obesity properties, nutrient digestibility, and blood parameters in healthy beagles. Four spayed and six castrated beagle dogs were divided into a control group (CON) with a diet comprising rice and chicken meal and a treatment group (TRT) with a diet comprising corn with an increased RS content by heating-cooling and chicken meal. All dogs in the CON and TRT groups were fed a 1.2-fold higher energy diet than the daily recommended energy requirement for 16 weeks. Throughout the study period, the body weight of dogs in CON increased, whereas no change in body weight was observed in TRT, resulting in a significant difference in body weight between the two groups at the end of the experiment. Moreover, a significant reduction in the apparent total tract digestibility was observed upon the analysis of dry matter, nitrogen-free extract, and organic matter in TRT compared with that in CON. The complete blood cell composition and biochemical parameters were within the reference range in both groups. A significant increase in the concentration of serum adiponectin was found in TRT at the end of the experiment. These results suggest that the corn RS may be beneficial for weight management owing to its reduced nutrient digestibility.

Vascular cambium produces the phloem and xylem, vascular tissues that transport resources and provide mechanical support, making it an ideal target for crop improvement. However, much remains unknown about how vascular cambium proliferates. In this study, through pharmaceutical and genetic manipulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) maxima, we demonstrate a direct link between levels of ROS and activity of LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES DOMAIN 11 (LBD11) in maintaining vascular cambium activity. LBD11 activates the transcription of several key ROS metabolic genes, including PEROXIDASE 71 and RESPIRATORY BURST OXIDASE HOMOLOGS D and F, to generate local ROS maxima in cambium, which in turn enhance the proliferation of cambial cells. In a negative feedback mechanism, higher ROS levels then repress LBD11 expression and maintain the balance of cambial cell proliferation. Our findings thus reveal the role of a novel LBD11/ROS-dependent feedback regulatory system in maintaining vascular cambium-specific redox homeostasis and radial growth in plants.

Bladder volume assessments are crucial for managing urinary disorders. Ultrasound imaging (US) is a preferred noninvasive, cost-effective imaging modality for bladder observation and volume measurements. However, the high operator dependency of US is a major challenge due to the difficulty in evaluating ultrasound images without professional expertise. To address this issue, image-based automatic bladder volume estimation methods have been introduced, but most conventional methods require high-complexity computing resources that are not available in point-of-care (POC) settings. Therefore, in this study, a deep learning-based bladder volume measurement system was developed for POC settings using a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN)-based segmentation model, which was optimized on a low-resource system-on-chip (SoC) to detect and segment the bladder region in ultrasound images in real time. The proposed model achieved high accuracy and robustness and can be executed on the low-resource SoC at 7.93 frames per second, which is 13.44 times faster than the frame rate of a conventional network with negligible accuracy drawbacks (0.004 of the Dice coefficient). The feasibility of the developed lightweight deep learning network was demonstrated using tissue-mimicking phantoms.

PURPOSE: The strategy of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) treatment in household tuberculosis (TB) contacts has been expanding in South Korea. However, there is little evidence of the cost-effectiveness of LTBI treatment in patients over 35 years of age. This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of LTBI treatment among household TB contacts in different age groups in South Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An age-structured model of TB was developed based on the reports from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and the National Health Insurance Service. Quality-adjusted life-years (QALY) and the averted number of TB-related deaths were estimated along with discounted costs for a measure of incremental cost-effectiveness ratios. RESULTS: The number of cumulative active TB cases would decrease by 1564 and 7450 under the scenario of LTBI treatment for those aged <35 years and <70 years, respectively, relative to the no-treatment scenario. The treatment strategies for patients aged 0 to <35 years, <55 years, <65 years, and <70 years would add 397, 1482, 3782, and 8491 QALYs at a cost of $660, $5930, $4560, and $2530, respectively, per QALY. For the averted TB-related deaths, LTBI treatment targeting those aged 0 to <35 years, <55 years, <65 years, and <70 years would avert 7, 89, 155, and 186 deaths at a cost of $35900, $99200, $111100, and $115700 per deaths, respectively, in 20 years. CONCLUSION: The age-specific expansion policy of LTBI treatment not only for those under 35 years of age but also for those under 65 years of age among household contacts was cost-effective in terms of QALYs and averted TB deaths.

Pluripotent stem cells are defined by both the ability to unlimitedly self-renew and differentiate to any somatic cell lineage, but understanding the mechanisms that control stem cell fitness versus the pluripotent cell identity is challenging. We performed four parallel genome-scale CRISPR-Cas9 screens to investigate the interplay between these two aspects of pluripotency. Our comparative analyses led to the discovery of genes with distinct roles in pluripotency regulation, including many mitochondrial and metabolism regulators crucial for stem cell fitness, and chromatin regulators that control stem cell identity. We further discovered a core set of factors that control both stem cell fitness and pluripotency identity, including an interconnected network of chromatin factors that safeguard pluripotency. Our unbiased and systematic screening and comparative analyses disentangle two interconnected aspects of pluripotency, provide rich datasets for exploring pluripotent cell identity versus self-renewal, and offer a valuable model for categorizing gene function in broad biological contexts.

CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) and MAZ are recognized insulators required for shielding repressed posterior genes from active anterior genes within the Hox clusters during motor neuron (MN) differentiation. CTCF and MAZ interact independently with cohesin and regulate three-dimensional genome organization. Here, we followed cohesin re-location upon CTCF and MAZ depletion in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) to identify novel insulators. Cohesin relocated to DNA motifs for various transcription factors, including PATZ1 and other zinc finger proteins (ZNFs). Moreover, PATZ1 and ZNFs co-localized with CTCF, MAZ, and cohesin with apparent overlapping specificity as dictated by the site to be insulated. Similar to CTCF and MAZ, PATZ1 interacted with RAD21. Patz1 KO mESCs exhibited altered global gene expression. While the absence of MAZ impacts anterior CTCF-boundaries as shown previously 1 , Patz1 KO led to derepression of posterior Hox genes, resulting in cervicothoracic transformation of motor neuron (MN) fate during differentiation. These findings point to a varied, combinatorial binding of known and newly defined accessory factors as being critical for positional identity and cellular fate determination during differentiation.

Ongoing, first-in-human clinical trials illustrate the feasibility and translational potential of human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-based cell therapies in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, a major unresolved challenge in the field is the extensive cell death following transplantation with <10% of grafted dopamine neurons surviving. Here, we performed a pooled CRISPR/Cas9 screen to enhance survival of postmitotic dopamine neurons in vivo . We identified p53-mediated apoptotic cell death as major contributor to dopamine neuron loss and uncovered a causal link of TNFa-NFκB signaling in limiting cell survival. As a translationally applicable strategy to purify postmitotic dopamine neurons, we performed a cell surface marker screen that enabled purification without the need for genetic reporters. Combining cell sorting with adalimumab pretreatment, a clinically approved and widely used TNFa inhibitor, enabled efficient engraftment of postmitotic dopamine neurons leading to extensive re-innervation and functional recovery in a preclinical PD mouse model. Thus, transient TNFa inhibition presents a clinically relevant strategy to enhance survival and enable engraftment of postmitotic human PSC-derived dopamine neurons in PD. Highlights: In vivo CRISPR-Cas9 screen identifies p53 limiting survival of grafted human dopamine neurons. TNFα-NFκB pathway mediates p53-dependent human dopamine neuron deathCell surface marker screen to enrich human dopamine neurons for translational use. FDA approved TNF-alpha inhibitor rescues in vivo dopamine neuron survival with in vivo function.

Comprehensive enhancer discovery is challenging because most enhancers, especially those affected in complex diseases, have weak effects on gene expression. Our network modeling revealed that nonlinear enhancer-gene regulation during cell state transitions can be leveraged to improve the sensitivity of enhancer discovery. Utilizing hESC definitive endoderm differentiation as a dynamic transition system, we conducted a mid-transition CRISPRi-based enhancer screen. The screen discovered a comprehensive set of enhancers (4 to 9 per locus) for each of the core endoderm lineage-specifying transcription factors, and many enhancers had strong effects mid-transition but weak effects post-transition. Through integrating enhancer activity measurements and three-dimensional enhancer-promoter interaction information, we were able to develop a CTCF loop-constrained Interaction Activity (CIA) model that can better predict functional enhancers compared to models that rely on Hi-C-based enhancer-promoter contact frequency. Our study provides generalizable strategies for sensitive and more comprehensive enhancer discovery in both normal and pathological cell state transitions.

Recently, there is a need to explore the utilization of various heterostructures using the designed nanocomposites and tuning the surfaces of electrodes for improving the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors (SC). In this work, a novel approach is successfully employed through a facile two-step synthetic route with the assistance of a microwave for only 1 min. Depending on the glass transition of a polystyrene (PS) substrate and electrochemical deposition (ECD) of electroactive Ni-Co layered double hydroxides (LDHs), a hierarchically designed flake-like morphology can be readily prepared to enhance the surface-active sites, which allows a rhombohedral Ni-Co LDHs electrode to obtain superior electrochemical properties. Further, the interactions between electrode and electrolyte during the diffusion of ions are highly simplified using multiple enhanced electroactive sites and shorter pathways for electron transfer. The unique surface architecture of the PS substrate and the synergistic effect of the bimetallic components in Ni-Co LDHs enable this substrate to obtain desired electrochemical activity in charge storage systems. The optimized MWC Co0.5Ni0.5 electrode exhibited an areal capacity of 100 µAh/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2 and a remarkable capacity retention of 91.2% over 5000 continuous charging and discharging cycles due to its remarkable synergistic effect of abundant faradaic redox reaction kinetics. The HSC device is assembled with the combination of optimized MWC Co0.5Ni0.5 and activated carbon as a positive and negative electrode, respectively. Further, the electrochemical test results demonstrated that MWC Co0.5Ni0.5 //AC HSC device showed a high areal capacitance of 531.25 mF/cm2 at a current density of 5 mA/cm2. In addition, the fabricated an aqueous HSC device showed a power density of 16 mW/cm2 at an energy density of 0.058 mWh/cm2, along with the remarkable capacity retention of 82.8% even after 10,000 continuous charging and discharging cycles. Moreover, the assembled hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) device is integrated with a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for the development of energy conversion and storage systems. Not only an extensive survey of materials but also an innovative solution for recent progress can confirm the wide range of potential SC applications. Remarkably, this study is a new way of constructing self-powered energy storage systems in the field of sustainable wearable electronics and future smart sensing systems.

Canine obesity is a major health concern that predisposes dogs to various disorders. The fecal microbiome has been attracting attention because of their impact on energy efficiency and metabolic disorders of host. However, little is known about specific microbial interactions, and how these may be affected by obesity in dogs. The objective of this study was to investigate the differences in fecal microbiome and specific microbial networks between obese and normal dogs. A total of 20 beagle dogs (males = 12, body weight [BW]: 10.5 ± 1.08 kg; females = 8, BW: 11.3 ± 1.71 kg; all 2-year-old) were fed to meet the maintenance energy requirements for 18 weeks. Then, 12 beagle dogs were selected based on body condition score (BCS) and divided into two groups: high BCS group (HBCS; BCS range: 7-9, males = 4, females = 2) and normal BCS group (NBCS; BCS range: 4-6, males = 4, females = 2). In the final week of the experiment, fecal samples were collected directly from the rectum, before breakfast, for analyzing the fecal microbiome using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The HBCS group had a significantly higher final BW than the NBCS group (P < 0.01). The relative abundances of Faecalibacterium, Phascolarctobacterium, Megamonas, Bacteroides, Mucispirillum, and an unclassified genus within Ruminococcaceae were significantly higher in the HBCS group than those in the NBCS group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, some Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) modules related to amino acid biosynthesis and B vitamins biosynthesis were enriched in the HBCS group (P < 0.10), whereas those related to carbohydrate metabolism were enriched in the NBCS group (P < 0.10). Microbial network analysis revealed distinct co-occurrence and mutually exclusive interactions between the HBCS and NBCS groups. In conclusion, several genera related to short-chain fatty acid production were enriched in the HBCS group. The enriched KEGG modules in the HBCS group enhanced energy efficiency through cross-feeding between auxotrophs and prototrophs. However, further studies are needed to investigate how specific networks can be interpreted in the context of fermentation characteristics in the lower gut and obesity in dogs.

This research aims to assess the functionality of the VLP-32 LiDAR sensor, which serves as the principal sensor for object recognition in autonomous vehicles. The evaluation is conducted by simulating edge conditions the sensor might encounter in a controlled darkroom setting. Parameters for environmental conditions under examination encompass measurement distances ranging from 10 to 30 m, varying rainfall intensities (0, 20, 30, 40 mm/h), and different observation angles (0°, 30°, 60°). For the material aspects, the investigation incorporates reference materials, traffic signs, and road surfaces. Employing this diverse set of conditions, the study quantitatively assesses two critical performance metrics of LiDAR: intensity and NPC (number of point clouds). The results indicate a general decline in intensity as the measurement distance, rainfall intensity, and observation angles increase. Instances were identified where the sensor failed to record intensity for materials with low reflective properties. Concerning NPC, both the effective measurement area and recorded values demonstrated a decreasing trend with enlarging measurement distance and angles of observation. However, NPC metrics remained stable despite fluctuations in rainfall intensity.

This study investigated the effect of Dodamssal rice, which has a high content of resistant starch, on obesity and hematologic properties in dogs. In Experiment 1, 24 spayed dogs were divided into three feeding groups: normal-fat basal diet (control), high-fat diet with 12% normal amylose type rice (hNAR), and high-fat diet with 12% high amylose type rice (Dodamssal rice; hHAR). In Experiment 2, 8 spayed dogs were assigned to a normal amylose type rice (NAR) group and a high amylose type rice group (HAR) with a normal-fat basal diet. After 24 weeks, an increase in weight and blood cholesterol was observed in both high-fat diet groups for Experiment 1. Specifically, an increase in serum alanine aminotransferase was observed over time in the hNAR group compared with that of the control; however, no such patterns were present in the hHAR group. Further, a significant weight-loss effect was observed in the HAR group in Experiment 2 at 4 weeks. The effect on body weight was due to the reduced digestibility of amylose and thereby lower dietary ME content. Overall, this confirmed that Dodamssal rice had a positive effect on weight loss in dogs, and these results suggest that Dodamssal rice has potential value as a raw ingredient for preventing obesity in dogs.
