RESUMO

This is a global ocean climatological dataset of 17 thermohaline parameters such as isothermal layer (ITL) depth (hT), mixed layer (ML) depth (hD), thermocline gradient (GT), pycnocline gradient (GD) determined from temperature (T) and salinity (S) profiles of the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) world ocean atlas 2018 (WOA18) using the double gradient method along with the identity-index (i-index) showing the quality of the determination. With the identified (hT, hD) and (GT, GD), other parameters such as ITL heat content (HITL), mixed layer fresh-water content (FML), maximum thermocline gradient (GTmax), thermocline depth (hth), temperature at thermocline depth (Tth), maximum density gradient GDmax), pycnocline depth (hpyc), density at pycnocline depth (ρpyc), and (hT - hD) (barrier layer if positive or compensated layer if negative). The dataset is located at the NOAA/NCEI website ( https://doi.org/10.25921/j3v2-jy50 ). It provides useful background information for ocean mixed layer dynamics, air-sea interaction, climatological studies. This paper is the only document for the dataset.

RESUMO

Disease caused by the archetypical amdoparvovirus (APV), Aleutian mink disease virus (AMDV), has been well studied, but APV infections in other carnivores are poorly understood. Skunk amdoparvovirus (SKAV), one of a handful of newly discovered APVs, is apparently species-specific in striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) and has a high prevalence across North America. We have evaluated the infection status and viral tissue distribution in a cohort of 26 free-ranging California skunks from a single rehabilitation facility who were euthanized due to poor prognosis for recovery from neurologic disease. SKAV was detected in the majority of this cohort, and virus was associated with a spectrum of lesions including tubulointerstitial nephritis, meningoencephalitis, myocarditis, and arteritis. Affected tissue and patterns of inflammation were partially overlapping with those of AMDV infection but were notably distinct in the kidney.

RESUMO

Reproductive failure represents an important cause of economic loss for the equine industry. We reviewed the cases of equine abortion and stillbirth submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, University of California-Davis from 1990 to 2022. A total of 1,774 cases were reviewed. A confirmed cause of abortion was determined in 29.2% of the cases. Abortion or stillbirth was attributed to infectious agents in 18.7% of the cases, with Streptococcus spp., equine herpesvirus 1, and Leptospira spp. being the most prevalent. Noninfectious causes of abortion were established in 10.5% of the cases, with umbilical cord torsion being the most common. In 70.8% of the cases, a definitive cause of abortion could not be established. Our study demonstrated the difficulties in establishing an etiologic diagnosis, even when following a standard diagnostic work-up. New diagnostic approaches are needed to improve the likelihood of reaching a final diagnosis in cases of equine abortion and stillbirth.

RESUMO

Background: The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) variants posed considerable threats to the global public health. We reviewed the epidemiology of variant cases and control measures implemented in Hong Kong. Methods: The epidemiological characteristics and the temporal trend of the COVID-19 variant cases and local clusters in Hong Kong, and the corresponding public health control measures were reviewed. Results: Between December 2020 and June 2021, 393 variant cases were reported, including 153, 59 and 79 cases of Alpha, Beta and Delta variants with no Gamma variant. The vast majority (378, 96.2%) were imported cases. Since early June 2021, Delta variant had taken over Alpha as the dominant strain. Public health control measures, including risk-stratified quarantine and testing requirements for inbound travellers, banning of flights from extremely high-risk areas, enhanced contact tracing and quarantine, were implemented. Among the 3 clusters involving local transmissions, 2 were linked to imported cases while the source of the remaining one was unknown. Discussion: Amid the global surges of COVID-19 variants, Hong Kong had continued to limit and prevent the occurrence of community-wide outbreak. Ongoing control strategies should be constantly reviewed and adjusted in response to the global and local COVID-19 situation.

RESUMO

Two different treatments in ocean dynamics are found between the gravity and pressure gradient force. Vertical component is 5-6 orders of magnitude larger than horizontal components for the pressure gradient force in large-scale motion, and for the gravity in any scale motion. The horizontal pressure gradient force is considered as a dominant force in oceanic motion from planetary to small scales. However, the horizontal gravity is omitted in oceanography completely. A non-dimensional C number (ratio between the horizontal gravity and the Coriolis force) is used to identify the importance of horizontal gravity in the ocean dynamics. Unexpectedly large C number with the global mean around 24 is obtained using the community datasets of the marine geoid height and ocean surface currents. New large-scale ocean dynamic equations with the real gravity are presented such as hydrostatic balance, geostrophic equilibrium, thermal wind, equipotential coordinate system, and vorticity equation.

RESUMO

Absolute geostrophic current at the ocean surface (S) contains three components: (1) absolute geostrophic current at the geoid undulation (N), (2) geostrophic shear (between S and N) due to horizontal gradient of dynamic ocean topography, and (3) geostrophic shear (between S and N) due to horizontal gradient of density. However, only the second component is used to represent the surface absolute geostrophic current in physical oceanography and satellite geodesy. Four public datasets are used to calculate each component. Evident difference between the surface absolute geostrophic current and the second component (i.e., geostrophic shear due to horizontal gradient of dynamic ocean topography) was found by the statistical characteristics with the relative root mean square difference of 0.605. It shows that the common practice in physical oceanography and satellite geodesy is not correct. The horizontal gradient of dynamic ocean topography alone cannot be claimed as the surface absolute geostrophic current.

RESUMO

Different from the existing global ocean climatological datasets of isothermal layer (ITL) depth (h), a global ocean synoptic dataset of h along with other parameters has been established from temperature profiles of the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) world ocean database 1961-2017. The exponential leap-forward gradient method was used to identify h and thermocline gradient (G) from each temperature profile measured by expendable bathythermograph (XBT) and conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD) instruments. Due to quality and vertical resolution of the profiling data, the numbers of (G, h) pairs are 446,811 out of 964,942 CTD profiles and 755,086 out of 2,303,433 XBT profiles. With the given h, other parameters such as ITL heat content (HITL), sea surface temperature (SST), temperature below ITL (Tm), and quality measures (Q, I) indices are provided. Altogether, the dataset contains 1,201,897 temporally and horizontally varying sets of (G, h, HITL, SST, Tm, Q-index, I-index). Note that we added 200° to the longitude. This synoptic dataset is located on the NCEI website for public use.

RESUMO

Summary: Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death among young adults. Social media and television have been shown to affect the likelihood that young adults will engage in risk-taking behaviour. We watched 216 episodes of five popular television series on Netflix and identified 333 separate driving scenes, of which 271 (81.4%) portrayed at least one risky driving behaviour. Unsafe driving (not wearing a seat belt) was the most common risky driving behaviour noted, occurring in 245 (73.6%) of driving scenes. Distracted driving (36 [18.8%]) and driving while using a cellphone (28 [8.4%]) were also noted. Popular television series model unsafe driving behaviours. Seat belts are infrequently used. As well, drivers are often distracted, looking away from the road to talk or talking on their cellphones. Television producers should be sensitive to modelling unsafe driving behaviours, particularly if the audience consists largely of young people.

RESUMO

A 14-mo-old South American coati (Nasua nasua) was submitted for necropsy to the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The coati had a history of progressive neurologic signs beginning 3 mo prior to euthanasia. At necropsy, the coati was in thin body condition, but no other significant findings were evident. Histopathologic findings included moderate distension of neuronal cell bodies by finely vesiculated cytoplasm within the cerebrum, cerebellum, spinal cord, and intestinal ganglia. Hepatocytes and macrophages in the lung, spleen, and liver were similarly affected. Transmission electron microscopy showed numerous electrondense membranous cytoplasmic bodies, swirls, and vesicular profiles within neuronal lysosomes in the brain. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a naturally occurring congenital glycogen storage disease in a South American coati and the family Procyonidae.

RESUMO

Galiximab is a primatized monoclonal antibody that targets CD80 expressed on malignant B cells and is being studied in the clinic as a potential treatment for follicular NHL. We have recently reported that galiximab signals B-NHL cells in vitro and inhibits cell growth and sensitizes resistant tumor cells to apoptosis by chemotherapeutic drugs. This study was designed to validate the in vitro findings in in vivo in mice. Thus, we examined in vivo the antitumor activity of galiximab used alone and in combination with chemotherapeutic agents in SCID mice bearing human lymphoma xenografts. The in vivo antitumor effects of galiximab used alone and in combination with fludarabine or doxorubicin were determined in solid and disseminated human B-lymphoma tumors grown in SCID mice. Galiximab monotherapy in vivo demonstrated significant antitumor activity in a Raji lymphoma solid tumor model and in an SKW disseminated lymphoma tumor model. There was significant inhibition in tumor growth and prolongation of survival. In vitro, galiximab sensitized Raji cells to apoptosis by both fludarabine and doxorubicin. Tumor growth inhibition was significantly enhanced when the mice were treated with the combination of galiximab and fludarabine. These findings support the potential clinical application of galiximab in combination with chemotherapeutic drugs for the treatment of CD80-expressing hematological malignancies.

RESUMO

There is a need for radioprotectors that protect normal tissues from ionizing radiation in patients receiving high doses of radiation and during nuclear emergencies. We investigated the possibility of creating an efficient oral radioprotector based on the natural pigment melanin that would act as an internal shield and protect the tissues via Compton scattering followed by free radical scavenging. CD-1 mice were fed melanin-containing black edible mushrooms Auricularia auricila-judae before 9 Gy total body irradiation. The location of the mushrooms in the body before irradiation was determined by in vivo fluorescent imaging. Black mushrooms protected 80% of mice from the lethal dose, while control mice or those given melanin-devoid mushrooms died from gastrointestinal syndrome. The crypts of mice given black mushrooms showed less apoptosis and more cell division than those in control mice, and their white blood cell and platelet counts were restored at 45 days to preradiation levels. The role of melanin in radioprotection was proven by the fact that mice given white mushrooms supplemented with melanin survived at the same rate as mice given black mushrooms. The ability of melanin-containing mushrooms to provide remarkable protection against radiation suggests that they could be developed into oral radioprotectors.

RESUMO

Retroperitoneal schwannomas are rare and present non-specifically. They usually manifest secondary to their compressive effects on adjacent structures. We describe a patient who presented with recurrent syncope resulting from a large retroperitoneal schwannoma stretching the inferior vena cava and compromising venous return. We also discuss the salient aspects of preoperative investigations leading to definitive diagnosis and surgery.

RESUMO

Pt-Ru binary catalysts were prepared on a polyaniline-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (PANi/MWCNT). PANi/MWCNT composites were synthesized by the polymerization of aniline in the presence of a carbon nanotube suspension using FeSO(4) and (NH(4))(2)S(2)O(8) as the oxidants. The Pt-Ru/PANi/MWCNT catalysts were formed by the chemical reduction of H(2)PtCl(6) and RuCl(3) using NaBH(4) as the reducing agent. The binary component catalyst is sharply distributed, with particle sizes ranging from 2.0 to 4.0 nm, and the Pt and Ru distributions are homogeneous when supported on PANi/MWCNT. In comparison, the binary catalyst supported on bare MWCNT displayed a Pt-rich core and a Ru-rich shell nanostructure. The surface composition deduced from CO stripping potentials confirms that the Ru surface content (χ(Ru)) is approximately 50% for the Pt-Ru alloy on PANi/MWCNT, and the catalyst on bare MWCNT shows nearly 70% Ru on the surface. Pt-Ru binary catalysts supported on PANi/MWCNT have higher activity, a higher Pt utilization efficiency, and much better durability when compared to other catalyst supports on bare MWCNT or on Vulcan XC-72.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Protection of bone marrow against radiotoxicity during radioimmunotherapy and in some cases external beam radiation therapy such as hemi-body irradiation would permit administration of significantly higher doses to tumors, resulting in increased efficacy and safety of treatment. Melanin, a naturally occurring pigment, possesses radioprotective properties. We hypothesized that melanin, which is insoluble, could be delivered to the bone marrow by intravenously administrated melanin-covered nanoparticles (MNs) because of the human body's "self-sieving" ability, protecting it against ionizing radiation. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The synthesis of MNs was performed via enzymatic polymerization of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine and/or 5-S-cysteinyl-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine on the surface of 20-nm plain silica nanoparticles. The biodistribution of radiolabeled MNs in mice was done at 3 and 24 h. Healthy CD-1 mice (Charles River Laboratories International, Inc., Wilmington, MA) or melanoma tumor-bearing nude mice were given MNs intravenously, 50 mg/kg of body weight, 3 h before either whole-body exposure to 125 cGy or treatment with 1 mCi of (188)Re-labeled 6D2 melanin-binding antibody. RESULTS: Polymerization of melanin precursors on the surface of silica nanoparticles resulted in formation of a 15-nm-thick melanin layer as confirmed by light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence. The biodistribution after intravenous administration showed than MN uptake in bone marrow was 0.3% and 0.2% of injected dose per gram at 3 and 24 h, respectively, whereas pre-injection with pluronic acid increased the uptake to 6% and 3% of injected dose per gram, respectively. Systemic MN administration reduced hematologic toxicity in mice treated with external radiation or radioimmunotherapy, whereas no tumor protection by MNs was observed. CONCLUSIONS: MNs or similar structures provide a novel approach to protection of bone marrow from ionizing radiation based on prevention of free radical formation by melanin.

RESUMO

Segments of conjugated polymers display the propensity to aggregate in solutions with common organic solvents. Here we revealed that the segmental aggregation of a conjugated polymer, poly(9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene-2,7-diyl), (PF2/6), in toluene was stabilized by the polymer-solvent complex formation through pi-pi stacking induction of solvent molecules and polymer segments. In this case, a portion of the solvent was trapped inside the aggregate domains upon bringing the system to the subambient temperatures. The residence time of these associated solvent molecules became long enough to yield a separate upfield-shifted NMR resonance. The line-shape of this resonance revealed alignment of the polymer segments in the aggregates. A portion of the solvent was frozen in the compact structure due to the formation of strong polymer-solvent complex.

RESUMO

The structure and solvent (water, methanol, etc.) dynamics of a number of fuel membrane electrode assembly (MEA) samples are studied with nuclear magnetic resonance microimaging with spatial resolution of tens of micrometers. The micrometer-scale inhomogeneity of the samples is observed and confirmed with various weighting methods. In particular, diffusion coefficients at different positions in MEA are clearly differentiated. Furthermore, chemical shift selection imaging enables one to investigate the spatial distribution and dynamics of individual chemical groups. These types of information offer us insights into the working principle of fuel cell and pave the way to in situ studies of operating fuel cells.
