RESUMO

The sequestration of organic carbon in seafloor sediments plays a key role in regulating global climate; however, human activities can disturb previously-sequestered carbon stocks, potentially reducing the capacity of the ocean to store CO2. Recent studies revealed profound seafloor impacts and sedimentary carbon loss due to fishing and shipping, yet most other human activities in the ocean have been overlooked. Here, we present an assessment of organic carbon disturbance related to the globally-extensive subsea telecommunications cable network. Up to 2.82-11.26 Mt of organic carbon worldwide has been disturbed as a result of cable burial, in water depths of up to 2000 m. While orders of magnitude lower than that disturbed by bottom fishing, it is a non-trivial amount that is absent from global budgets. Future offshore developments that disturb the seafloor should consider the safeguarding of carbon stocks, across the full spectrum of Blue Economy industries.

RESUMO

Sediment, nutrients, organic carbon and pollutants are funnelled down submarine canyons from continental shelves by sediment-laden flows called turbidity currents, which dominate particulate transfer to the deep sea. Post-glacial sea-level rise disconnected more than three quarters of the >9000 submarine canyons worldwide from their former river or long-shore drift sediment inputs. Existing models therefore assume that land-detached submarine canyons are dormant in the present-day; however, monitoring has focused on land-attached canyons and this paradigm remains untested. Here we present the most detailed field measurements yet of turbidity currents within a land-detached submarine canyon, documenting a remarkably similar frequency (6 yr-1) and speed (up to 5-8 ms-1) to those in large land-attached submarine canyons. Major triggers such as storms or earthquakes are not required; instead, seasonal variations in cross-shelf sediment transport explain temporal-clustering of flows, and why the storm season is surprisingly absent of turbidity currents. As >1000 other canyons have a similar configuration, we propose that contemporary deep-sea particulate transport via such land-detached canyons may have been dramatically under-estimated.

RESUMO

As demonstrated at Anak Krakatau on December 22nd, 2018, tsunamis generated by volcanic flank collapse are incompletely understood and can be devastating. Here, we present the first high-resolution characterisation of both subaerial and submarine components of the collapse. Combined Synthetic Aperture Radar data and aerial photographs reveal an extensive subaerial failure that bounds pre-event deformation and volcanic products. To the southwest of the volcano, bathymetric and seismic reflection data reveal a blocky landslide deposit (0.214 ± 0.036 km3) emplaced over 1.5 km into the adjacent basin. Our findings are consistent with en-masse lateral collapse with a volume ≥0.175 km3, resolving several ambiguities in previous reconstructions. Post-collapse eruptions produced an additional ~0.3 km3 of tephra, burying the scar and landslide deposit. The event provides a model for lateral collapse scenarios at other arc-volcanic islands showing that rapid island growth can lead to large-scale failure and that even faster rebuilding can obscure pre-existing collapse.

RESUMO

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that spontaneous clearance of hepatitis C virus (HCV) may be associated with the HLA DQB1*0301 allele but there is still some debate over the role of other alleles and HLA haplotypes in HCV infection. As this may best be resolved by studying genetically different populations, we have investigated HLA class II-encoded susceptibility and resistance to HCV infection in a relatively sedentary population of patients from northwestern Poland. METHODS: The distributions of HLA class II DRB1, DQA1, DQB1 and DPB1 alleles were determined by standard PCR-protocol in 129 unrelated patients with chronic hepatitis C (anti-HCV and HCV-RNA positive) and 103 healthy unrelated racially-matched control subjects. Fifty-five patients were treated with alpha-interferon (5 MIU thrice weekly for 6 months) out of whom 29 showed a complete response and 26 were non-responders. RESULTS: A significantly reduced frequency of the DQB1*0301 allele in the patients was observed (24.0% vs. 38.8%; p=0.015). Additionally, two different DR-DQ haplotypes were found to be associated with chronic HCV infection: DRB1*1501-DQA1*01-DQB1*0602 (24.0% vs. 12.6%; p= 0.027) and DRB1*0701-DQA1*0201-DQB1*02 (31.8 vs. 12.6%; p=0.0006), the latter difference being most pronounced in those patients who responded to alpha-interferon treatment (41.4% vs. 12.6%; p=0.00048). CONCLUSIONS: The results confirm the negative association between chronic HCV and DQB1*0301 and identify two novel genetic associations. In particular, the DRB1*0701-DQA1*0201-DQB1*02 haplotype is associated with both chronic infection and response to alpha-interferon. Interestingly, the same haplotype is reportedly associated with non-response to hepatitis B vaccination.
