RESUMO

For cellular structures with uniform geometry, cell size and distribution, made from a neo-Hookean material, we demonstrate experimentally that large stretching causes nonlinear scaling effects governed by the microstructural architecture and the large strains at the cell level, which are not predicted by the linear elastic theory. For this purpose, three honeycomb-like structures with uniform square cells in stacked distribution were designed, where the number of cells varied, while the material volume and the ratio between the thickness and the length of the cell walls were fixed. These structures were manufactured from silicone rubber and tested under large uniaxial tension in a bespoke test fixture. Optical strain measurements were used to assess the deformation by capturing both the global displacements of the structure and the local deformations in the form of a strain map. The experimental results showed that, under sufficiently large strains, there was an increase in the stiffness of the structure when the same volume of material was arranged as many small cells compared to when it was organized as fewer larger cells. Finite element simulations confirmed our experimental findings. This study sheds light upon the nonlinear elastic responses of cellular structures in large-strain deformations, which cannot be captured within the linear elasticity framework.

RESUMO

SoloStar (sanofi-aventis) is a new, disposable insulin pen for the administration of insulin glargine (Lantus, sanofi-aventis) or insulin glulisine (Apidra, sanofi-aventis). SoloStar was developed to address a wide range of patient needs and demonstrates advancement over previous devices, owing to its appropriate combination of ergonomically-tested and mechanically improved features. The authors report the results of key investigations carried out by sanofi-aventis as part of the SoloStar development plan, including dose accuracy and injection force testing. Comparisons between SoloStar and two commonly used pens, FlexPen (Novo Nordisk) and the Humulin/Humalog pen (Eli Lilly) establish SoloStar as a state of the art pen that is suitable for most patients with diabetes.

RESUMO

Pen injection devices are a common method of administering insulin for patients with diabetes. Pen devices must comply with guidelines prepared by the International Organization for Standardization, which include device dose accuracy and precision. OptiClik (sanofi-aventis) was developed to fulfil unmet needs of patients with diabetes, including: easier cartridge changing, clearer dose display and readability, and a larger dose of insulin to be delivered with a single injection. In this paper, the authors report on the dose accuracy of the OptiClik pen device, which uses a novel cartridge system with an integrated plunger for easier cartridge changing. The authors show that OptiClik accurately delivers a required dose of insulin, which is maintained over the lifetime of the pen. OptiClik offers a significant contribution to the treatment of diabetes.
