BACKGROUND: We sought to examine the associations of the Lifestyle for Brain Health (LIBRA) index with cognitive function among rural Chinese older adults and to explore the potential role of cluster of differentiation 33 gene (CD33) in the associations. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study included 4914 dementia-free participants (age ≥60 years; 56.43 % women) in the 2018 baseline examination of MIND-China. The LIBRA index was generated from 11 factors. We used a neuropsychological test battery to assess episodic memory, verbal fluency, attention, executive function, and global cognition. The CD33(rs3865444) polymorphism was detected using multiple-polymerase chain reaction amplification. Data were analyzed using the general linear regression models. RESULTS: A higher LIBRA index was associated with multivariable-adjusted ß-coefficient (95 %CI) of -0.011(-0.020- -0.001) for global cognitive z-score, -0.020(-0.033- -0.006) for episodic memory, and -0.016(-0.029- -0.004) for verbal fluency. The CD33(rs3865444) was associated with a lower global cognitive z-score in the additive (CA vs. CC: ß-coefficient=0.042; 95 %CI=0.008-0.077), the dominant (CA+AA vs. CC: 0.040; 0.007-0.073), and the over-dominant (CA vs. CC+AA: 0.043; 0.009-0.077) models. Similar results were obtained for verbal fluency and attention. The CD33 gene showed statistical interactions with LIBRA index on cognitive function (Pinteraction<0.05) such that a higher LIBRA index was significantly associated with lower z-scores of global cognition and attention only among CD33 CC carriers (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This population-based study reveals for the first time that a higher LIBRA index is associated with worse cognitive performance in rural Chinese older adults and that CD33 gene could modify the association.

The neuropathological mechanisms underlying the association between sleep duration and mild cognitive impairment remain poorly understood. This population-based study included 2032 dementia-free people (age ≥ 60 years; 55.1% women) derived from participants in the Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China; of these, data were available in 841 participants for Alzheimer's plasma biomarkers (e.g. amyloid-ß, total tau and neurofilament light chain), 1044 for serum microvascular biomarkers (e.g. soluble adhesion molecules) and 834 for brain MRI biomarkers (e.g. whiter matter, grey matter, hippocampus, lacunes, enlarged perivascular spaces and white matter hyperintensity WMH). We used electrocardiogram-based cardiopulmonary coupling analysis to measure sleep duration, a neuropsychological test battery to assess cognitive function and the Petersen's criteria to define mild cognitive impairment. Data were analysed with multivariable logistic and general linear models. In the total sample (n = 2032), 510 participants were defined with mild cognitive impairment, including 438 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and 72 with non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Long sleep duration (>8 versus 6-8 h) was significantly associated with increased likelihoods of mild cognitive impairment and non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment and lower scores in global cognition, verbal fluency, attention and executive function (Bonferroni-corrected P < 0.05). In the subsamples, long sleep duration was associated with higher plasma amyloid-ß40 and total tau, a lower amyloid-ß42/amyloid-ß40 ratio and smaller grey matter volume (Bonferroni-corrected P < 0.05). Sleep duration was not significantly associated with serum-soluble adhesion molecules, white matter hyperintensity volume, global enlarged perivascular spaces and lacunes (P > 0.05). Alzheimer's and neurodegenerative pathologies may represent common pathways linking long sleep duration with mild cognitive impairment and low cognition in older adults.

Panonychus citri (McGregor) strains have developed a high level of resistance to abamectin, but the underlying molecular mechanism is unknown. Uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) are critical for the removal of a variety of exogenous and endogenous substances. In this study, an enzyme activity assay revealed that UGTs potentially contribute to P. citri abamectin resistance. Spatiotemporal expression profiles showed that only PcUGT202A9 was significantly overexpressed in the abamectin-resistant strain (AbR) at all developmental stages. Moreover, UGT activity decreased significantly, whereas abamectin susceptibility increased significantly, in AbR after PcUGT202A9 was silenced. Three-dimensional modeling and molecular docking analyses revealed that PcUGT202A9 can bind stably to abamectin. Recombinant PcUGT202A9 activity was detected when α-naphthol was used, but the enzymatic activity was inhibited by abamectin (50 % inhibitory concentration: 803.3 ±â€¯14.20 µmol/L). High-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analyses indicated that recombinant PcUGT202A9 can effectively degrade abamectin and catalyze the conjugation of UDP-glucose to abamectin. These results imply PcUGT202A9 contributes to P. citri abamectin resistance.

IDH1 and IDH2 mutational status is a critical biomarker with diagnostic, prognostic, and treatment implications in glioma. Although IDH1 p.R132H-specific immunohistochemistry is available, it is unable to identify other mutations in IDH1/2. Next-generation sequencing can accurately determine IDH1/2 mutational status but suffers from long turnaround time when urgent treatment planning and initiation is medically necessary. The Idylla assay can detect IDH1/2 mutational status from unstained formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) slides in as little as a few hours. In a clinical validation, we demonstrate clinical accuracy of 97% compared to next-generation sequencing. Sensitivity studies demonstrated a limit of detection of 2.5-5% variant allele frequency, even at DNA inputs below the manufacturer's recommended threshold. Overall, the assay is an effective and accurate method for rapid determination of IDH1/2 mutational status.

Background: Stroke is a disease with high morbidity, disability, and mortality. Immune factors play a crucial role in the occurrence of ischemic stroke (IS), but their exact mechanism is not clear. This study aims to identify possible immunological mechanisms by recognizing immune-related biomarkers and evaluating the infiltration pattern of immune cells. Methods: We downloaded datasets of IS patients from GEO, applied R language to discover differentially expressed genes, and elucidated their biological functions using GO, KEGG analysis, and GSEA analysis. The hub genes were then obtained using two machine learning algorithms (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE)) and the immune cell infiltration pattern was revealed by CIBERSORT. Gene-drug target networks and mRNA-miRNA-lncRNA regulatory networks were constructed using Cytoscape. Finally, we used RT-qPCR to validate the hub genes and applied logistic regression methods to build diagnostic models validated with ROC curves. Results: We screened 188 differentially expressed genes whose functional analysis was enriched to multiple immune-related pathways. Six hub genes (ANTXR2, BAZ2B, C5AR1, PDK4, PPIH, and STK3) were identified using LASSO and SVM-RFE. ANTXR2, BAZ2B, C5AR1, PDK4, and STK3 were positively correlated with neutrophils and gamma delta T cells, and negatively correlated with T follicular helper cells and CD8, while PPIH showed the exact opposite trend. Immune infiltration indicated increased activity of monocytes, macrophages M0, neutrophils, and mast cells, and decreased infiltration of T follicular helper cells and CD8 in the IS group. The ceRNA network consisted of 306 miRNA-mRNA interacting pairs and 285 miRNA-lncRNA interacting pairs. RT-qPCR results indicated that the expression levels of BAZ2B, C5AR1, PDK4, and STK3 were significantly increased in patients with IS. Finally, we developed a diagnostic model based on these four genes. The AUC value of the model was verified to be 0.999 in the training set and 0.940 in the validation set. Conclusion: Our research explored the immune-related gene expression modules and provided a specific basis for further study of immunomodulatory therapy of IS.

Accurate monitoring of tetracycline (TC) residues in the environment is crucial for avoiding contaminant risk. Herein, a novel TC biosensor was facilely designed by integrating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into the porphyrin metal-organic matrix (Ag@AgPOM) as a bifunctional electrochemiluminescence (ECL) probe. Different from the step-by-step synthesis of the co-reaction accelerator and ECL emitter, the co-reaction accelerators Ag NPs were in situ-grown on the surface of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) via a simple one-pot approach. Symbiotic Ag NPs on Ag@AgPOM formed an intimate interface and increased the collision efficiency of the ECL reaction, achieving the ECL enhancement of TCPP. Under the optimized conditions, the ternary ECL biosensor showed a wide linear detection range toward TC with a low detection limit of 0.14 fmol L-1. Compared with the traditional HPLC and ELISA methods, satisfied analytical adaptability made this sensing strategy feasible to monitor TC in complex environmental samples.

INTRODUCTION: The surgical intervention approach to insulinomas in proximity to the main pancreatic duct remains controversial. Standard pancreatic resection is recommended by several guidelines; however, enucleation (EN) still attracts surgeons with less risk of late exocrine/endocrine insufficiency, despite a higher postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) rate. Recently, the efficacy and safety of preoperative pancreatic stent placement before the EN have been demonstrated. Thus, a multicentre open-label study is being conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of stent placement in improving the outcome of EN of insulinomas in proximity to the main pancreatic duct. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a prospective, randomised, open-label, superiority clinical trial conducted at multiple tertiary centres in China. The major eligibility criterion is the presence of insulinoma located in the head and neck of the pancreas in proximity (≤2 mm) to the main pancreatic duct. Blocked randomisation will be performed to allocate patients into the stent EN group and the direct EN group. Patients in the stent EN group will go through stent placement by the endoscopist within 24 hours before the EN surgery, whereas other patients will receive EN surgery directly. The primary outcome is the assessment of the superiority of stent placement in reducing POPF rate measured by the International Study Group of Pancreatic Surgery standard. Both interventions will be performed in an inpatient setting and regular follow-up will be performed. The primary outcome (POPF rate) will be tested for superiority with the Χ2 test. The difference in secondary outcomes between the two groups will be analysed using appropriate tests. The incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) induced by obesity is rapidly increasing. Although there are many synthetic drugs for treating T2DM, they have various side effects. Here, we report that miR8175, a plant miRNA from burdock root, has effective antidiabetic activity. After administration of burdock decoction or synthetic miR8175 by gavage, both burdock decoction and miR8175 can significantly improve the impaired glucose metabolism of diabetic mice induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Our results demonstrate that burdock decoction and miR8175 enhance the insulin sensitivity of the hepatic insulin signaling pathway by targeting Ptprf and Ptp1b, which may be the reason for the improvement in metabolism. This study provides a theoretical basis for the main active component and molecular mechanism of burdock to improve insulin resistance. And the study also suggests that plant miRNA may be an indispensable nutrient for maintaining human health.

This study investigated the impact of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) at Neiguan acupoint (PC6) on the physiological and behavioral responses of participants exposed in virtual height. 40 participants were included in the study and were randomly assigned to either a control group or an intervention group. Participants had an immersive experience with a VR interactive platform that provided somatosensory interaction in height stimulation scenes. Psychological scores, behavioral and cognitive performance, and physiological responses were recorded and analyzed. The results indicated that the intervention group had significantly lower fear scores compared to the control group. Analysis of heart rate variability revealed that the intervention group exhibited improved heart rate variability, indicating enhanced cardiovascular function and emotion regulation. The behavioral and cognitive results demonstrated that the intervention group exhibited higher left eye openness, faster reaction times, and greater movement distance, suggesting enhanced attentional focus, cognitive processing, and reduced avoidance behaviors. These findings suggest that TEAS at PC6 can effectively reduce fear and improve the regulation of physiological and behavioral responses to negative emotional stimuli.

Cyetpyrafen is a recently developed acaricide. The citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor), has developed significant resistance to cyetpyrafen. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the cyetpyrafen resistance in P. citri remains unclear. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) play a critical role in arthropod pesticide resistance. This study showed that GSTs were potentially related to the resistance of P. citri to cyetpyrafen through synergistic experiments and enzyme activity analysis. An omega-family GST gene, PcGSTO1, was significantly up-regulated in the egg, nymph, and adult stages of the cyetpyrafen-resistant strain. Additionally, silencing of PcGSTO1 significantly increased the mortality of P. citri to cyetpyrafen and recombinant PcGSTO1 demonstrated the ability to metabolize cyetpyrafen. Our results indicated that the overexpression of PcGSTO1 is associated with cyetpyrafen resistance in P. citri, and they also provided valuable information for managing resistance in P. citri.

BACKGROUND: Lacunes are associated with cognitive impairment. We sought to identify strategic lacune locations associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and subtypes of MCI among older adults, and further to examine the role of white matter hyperintensities and perivascular spaces in the association. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study included 1230 dementia-free participants in the brain magnetic resonance imaging substudy (2018-2020) in MIND-China (Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China). Lacunes were visually identified in frontal lobe, parieto-occipital lobe, temporal lobe, insula, basal ganglia, thalamus, cerebellum, and brainstem. MCI, amnestic MCI (aMCI), and nonamnestic MCI (naMCI) were defined following the Petersen's criteria. Data were analyzed using logistic regression models. RESULTS: Of the 1230 participants (age, ≥60 years; mean age, 69.40; SD, 4.30 years; 58.5% women), lacunes were detected in 357 people and MCI was defined in 286 individuals, including 243 with aMCI and 43 with naMCI. Lacunes in the supratentorial area, internal capsula, putamen/pallidum, and insula was significantly associated with increased odds ratio of MCI (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio ranged 1.40-3.21; P<0.05) and aMCI (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio ranged 1.46-3.36; P<0.05), whereas lacunes in the infratentorial area and brainstem were significantly associated with naMCI (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio ranged 2.68-3.46; P<0.01). Furthermore, the associations of lacunes in insula and internal capsula with MCI and aMCI, as well as the associations of lacunes in infratentorial area and brainstem with naMCI were present independent of white matter hyperintensities volume and perivascular spaces number. CONCLUSIONS: Lacunes in the internal capsula, putamen/pallidum, insula, and brainstem may represent the strategic lacunes that are independently associated with MCI, aMCI, or naMCI in Chinese older adults. Subcellular metabolomics analysis is crucial for understanding intracellular heterogeneity and accurate drug-cell interactions. Unfortunately, the ultra-small size and complex microenvironment inside the cell pose a great challenge to achieving this goal. To address this challenge, we propose an artificial intelligence-assisted subcellular mass spectrometry imaging (AI-SMSI) strategy with in situ image segmentation. Based on the nanometer-resolution MSI technique, the protonated guanine and threonine ions were respectively employed as the nucleus and cytoplasmic markers to complete image segmentation at the subcellular level, avoiding mutual interference of signals from various compartments in the cell. With advanced AI models, the metabolites within the different regions could be further integrated and profiled. Through this method, we decrypted the distinct action mechanism of isomeric drugs, doxorubicin (DOX) and epirubicin (EPI), only with a stereochemical inversion at C-4'. Within the cytoplasmic region, fifteen specific metabolites were discovered as biomarkers for distinguishing the drug action difference between DOX and EPI. Moreover, we identified that the downregulations of glutamate and aspartate in the malate-aspartate shuttle pathway may contribute to the higher paratoxicity of DOX. Our current AI-SMSI approach has promising applications for subcellular metabolomics analysis and thus opens new opportunities to further explore drug-cell specific interactions for the long-term pursuit of precision medicine.

Backgrounds: The validity of heart rate variability (HRV) has been substantiated in mental workload assessments. However, cognitive tasks often coincide with physical exertion in practical mental work, but their synergic effects on HRV remains insufficiently established. The study aims were to investigate the combined effects of cognitive and physical load on autonomic nerve functions. Methods: Thirty-five healthy male subjects (aged 23.5 ± 3.3 years) were eligible and enrolled in the study. The subjects engaged in n-back cognitive tasks (1-back, 2-back, and 3-back) under three distinct physical conditions, involving isotonic contraction of the left upper limb with loads of 0 kg, 3 kg, and 5 kg. Electrocardiogram signals and cognitive task performance were recorded throughout the tasks, and post-task assessment of subjective experiences were conducted using the NASA-TLX scale. Results: The execution of n-back tasks resulted in enhanced perceptions of task-load feelings and increased reaction times among subjects, accompanied by a decline in the accuracy rate (p < 0.05). These effects were synchronously intensified by the imposition of physical load. Comparative analysis with a no-physical-load scenario revealed significant alterations in the HRV of the subjects during the cognitive task under moderate and high physical conditions. The main features were a decreased power of the high frequency component (p < 0.05) and an increased low frequency component (p < 0.05), signifying an elevation in sympathetic activity. This physiological response manifested similarly at both moderate and high physical levels. In addition, a discernible linear correlation was observed between HRV and task-load feelings, as well as task performance under the influence of physical load (p < 0.05). Conclusion: HRV can serve as a viable indicator for assessing mental workload in the context of physical activities, making it suitable for real-world mental work scenarios.

OBJECTIVES: To quantitatively assess and compare retinal macular structures of rural-dwelling older adults in China using two different optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanners and to examine their associations with demographic, lifestyle, clinical and ocular factors. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based, cross-sectional study included 971 participants (age ≥60 years) derived from the Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China study. We collected data on demographics, lifestyle factors, clinical conditions (eg, cardiovascular disease (CVD)) and ocular factors (eg, visual acuity and spherical equivalent). We used two models of spectral-domain OCT to measure macular parameters in nine Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study subfields. Data were analysed using the multiple general linear models. RESULTS: Spectralis OCT demonstrated higher macular thickness but a lower macular volume than Primus 200 OCT (p<0.05). Nasal quadrant of the inner and outer subfields was the thickest, followed by superior quadrant. Adjusting for multiple potential confounding variables, older age was significantly correlated with lower average inner and outer macular thicknesses and overall macular volume. Men had higher macular parameters than women. The presence of CVD was correlated with lower central macular thickness (ß=-6.83; 95% CI: -13.08 to -0.58; p=0.032). Middle school or above was associated with higher average inner macular thickness (ß=7.85; 95% CI: 1.14 to 14.55; p=0.022) and higher spherical equivalent was correlated with lower average inner macular thickness (ß=-1.78; 95% CI: -3.50 to -0.07; p=0.042). CONCLUSIONS: Macular thickness and volume assessed by Spectralis and Primus 200 OCT scanners differ. Older age and female sex are associated with lower macular thickness and volume. Macular parameters are associated with education, CVD and spherical equivalent. TRIAL REGISTERATION NUMBER: MIND-China study (ChiCTR1800017758).

Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormal brain networks in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) in emotional processing. While any cognitive task consists of a series of stages, little is yet known about the topology of functional brain networks in MDD for these stages during emotional face recognition. To address this problem, electroencephalography (EEG)-based functional brain networks of MDD patients at different stages of facial information processing were investigated in this study. First, EEG signals were collected from 16 patients with MDD and 18 age-, gender-, and education-matched normal subjects when performing an emotional face recognition task. Second, the global field power (GFP) method was employed to divide group-averaged event-related potentials into different stages. Third, using the phase transfer entropy (PTE) approach, the brain networks of MDD patients and normal individuals were constructed for each stage in negative and positive face processing, respectively. Finally, we compared the topological properties of brain networks of each stage between the two groups using graph theory approaches. The results showed that the analyzed three stages of emotional face processing corresponded to specific neurophysiological phases, namely, visual perception, face recognition, and emotional decision-making. It was also demonstrated that depressed patients showed abnormally decreased characteristic path length at the visual perception stage of negative face recognition and normalized characteristic path length in the stage of emotional decision-making during positive face processing compared to healthy subjects. Furthermore, while both the MDD and normal groups' brain networks were found to exhibit small-world network characteristics, the brain network of patients with depression tended to be randomized. Moreover, for patients with MDD, the centro-parietal region may lose its status as a hub in the process of facial expression identification. Together, our findings suggested that altered emotional function in MDD patients might be associated with disruptions in the topological organization of functional brain networks during emotional face recognition, which further deepened our understanding of the emotion processing dysfunction underlying MDD.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and associated factors of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults. METHODS: We collected data on demographic, epidemiological, and clinical factors via in-person interviews and clinical examinations following a structured questionnaire. The 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used to assess depressive symptoms, the Berlin questionnaire (BQ) to assess obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk; and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) to assess sleep characteristics. EDS was defined as the total ESS score > 10. RESULTS: This population-based study engaged 4845 participants (age ≥ 65 years, 57.3% female) in the 2018 examination of the Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China. The prevalence of EDS was 9.3% in the total sample, 8.3% in females, and 10.6% in males, and the prevalence decreased with advanced age. Logistic regression analysis revealed that EDS was significantly associated with age (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.97; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.95-0.99), female sex (0.53; 0.36-0.77), hypertension (0.68; 0.54-0.85), depressive symptoms (2.68; 2.07-3.46), high OSA risk (2.11; 1.69-2.63), and poor sleep quality (2.12; 1.60-2.82). CONCLUSION: EDS affects nearly one-tenth of rural older adults in China. Older age, female sex, and hypertension were associated with a decreased likelihood of EDS, while depressive symptoms, high OSA risk, and poor sleep quality were correlated with an elevated likelihood of EDS.

Metasurfaces have exhibited unprecedented degree of freedom in manipulating electromagnetic (EM) waves and thus provide fantastic front-end interfaces for smart systems. Here we show a framework for perception enhancement based on vision-driven metasurface. Human's eye movements are matched with microwave radiations to extend the humans' perception spectrum. By this means, our eyes can "sense" visual information and invisible microwave information. Several experimental demonstrations are given for specific implementations, including a physiological-signal-monitoring system, an "X-ray-glasses" system, a "glimpse-and-forget" tracking system and a speech reception system for deaf people. Both the simulation and experiment results verify evident advantages in perception enhancement effects and improving information acquisition efficiency. This framework can be readily integrated into healthcare systems to monitor physiological signals and to offer assistance for people with disabilities. This work provides an alternative framework for perception enhancement and may find wide applications in healthcare, wearable devices, search-and-rescue and others.

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of rectal modular dissection (RMD) in male patients with middle and low rectal cancer. RMD is a technique used to guide the surgical procedure for rectal mobilization, with the ultimate goal of achieving total mesorectal excision. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of RMD, a single-center, non-inferiority randomized clinical trial was carried out. Methods: Eligible patients were randomly assigned into two groups: the RMD group and the traditional rectal mobilization (TRM) group. Demographic characteristics, perioperative data and pathological results of the surgical specimens were collected for analysis. additionally, assessments of urogenital function and defecation function were conducted for all participants. Results: A total of 103 patients (RMD group 53 patients and TRM group 50 patients) were included to analyzed. There were no significant differences in age, body mass index, ASA classification, and tumor characteristics between two groups. The RMD group had significantly lower blood loss (P = 0.00), shorter operative duration (P = 0.00), and shorter hospital stay (P = 0.04) compared to the TRM group. The complete rate of mesorectal excision was higher in the RMD group (98.1%) compared to the TRM group (86.0%, P = 0.02). In terms of functional outcomes, the RMD group had better evaluation scores for urethral function (IPSS score, P = 0.01), erectile function (IIEF-5 score, P = 0.00) and defecation function (LARS score, P = 0.00) at the one-year postoperative follow-up. The 1-year disease-free survival rate was similar between the two groups (P = 0.28). Conclusions: These results suggest that RMD is an effective and safe approach for achieving total mesorectal excision while promoting better functional outcomes for patients. The trial was registered in Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2100052094).

OBJECTIVE: To compare the role and importance of fibular fixation in tibiofibular fractures by Meta-analysis. METHODS: The literature related to the comparison of the efficacy of fixation of the fibula with or without fixation on the treatment of tibiofibular fractures was searched through the databases of China Knowledge Network, Wipu, Wanfang, The Cochrane Library, Web of science and Pubmed, and statistical analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software. The rates of malrotation, rotational deformity, internal/external deformity, anterior/posterior deformity, non-union, infection, secondary surgery and operative time were compared between the fibula fixation and non-fixation groups. RESULTS: A total of 11 publications were included, six randomised controlled trials and five case-control trials, eight of which were of high quality. A total of 813 cases were included, of which 383 were treated with fibula fixation and 430 with unfixed fibulae.Meta-analysis results showed that fixation of the fibulae in the treatment of tibiofibular fractures reduced the rates of postoperative rotational deformity[RR=0.22, 95%CI(0.10, 0.45), P<0.000 1] and internal/external deformity[RR=0.34, 95%CI(0.14, 0.84), P=0.02] and promoted fracture healing [RR=0.76, 95%CI(0.58, 0.99), P=0.04]. In contrast, the rates of poor reduction [RR=0.48, 95% CI(0.10, 2.33), P=0.36], anterior/posterior deformity[RR=1.50, 95%CI(0.76, 2.96), P=0.24], infection[RR=1.43, 95%CI(0.76, 2.72), P=0.27], secondary surgery[RR=1.32, 95%CI(0.82, 2.11), P=0.25], and operative time[MD=10.21, 95%CI(-17.79, 38.21), P=0.47] were not statistically significant (P>0.05) for comparison. CONCLUSION: Simultaneous fixation of the tibia and fibula is clinically more effective in the treatment of tibiofibular fractures.
