RESUMO

We report on terahertz (THz) generation via optical rectification in a room-temperature lithium niobate crystal under variable pump pulse durations, ranging from 100 to 300 fs, at 800 nm center wavelength. The efficiency for the process is predicted to have an order of magnitude increase when longer duration Fourier-limited pump pulses are used. Our results confirm this increase in efficiency, and we report a record 800 nm pump energy conversion efficiency of 0.35% with a saturation at >240 fs pulse duration. While promising, our findings show a series of key problems that must be overcome before the theoretical limit can be achieved, including the influence of the pump bandwidth broadening due to the cascaded nonlinearity taking place within the crystal.

RESUMO

The enhancement of light-matter coupling when light is confined to wavelength scale volumes is useful both for studying small sample volumes and increasing the overall sensing ability. At these length scales, nonradiative interactions are of key interest to which near-field optical techniques may reveal new phenomena facilitating next-generation material functionalities and applications. Efforts to develop novel chemical or biological sensors using metamaterials have yielded innovative ideas in the optical and terahertz frequency range whereby the spatially integrated response over a resonator structure is monitored via the re-radiated or leaked light. But although terahertz waves generally exhibit distinctive response in chemical molecules or biological tissue, there is little absorption for subwavelength size sample and therefore poor image contrast. Here, we introduce a method that spatially resolves the differential near-field phase response of the entire resonator as a spectral fingerprint. By simultaneously probing two metallic ring resonators, where one loaded with the sample of interest, the differential phase response is able to resolve the presence of guest molecules (e.g. methanol) as they are adsorbed or released within the pores of a prototypical porous coordination polymer.

RESUMO

We study the carrier density dependence of nonlinear terahertz (THz) absorption due to field-induced intervalley scattering in photoexcited GaAs using the optical-pump/THz-probe technique. The intervalley scattering in GaAs is strongly dependent on the photo-carrier density. As the carrier density is increased from 1 × 10(17) to 4.7 × 10(17) cm(-3), the nonlinear absorption bleaching increases. However, if the carrier density is increased further above 4.7 × 10(17) cm(-3), the trend reverses and the bleaching is reduced. The initial increase in absorption bleaching is because, unlike low THz field, high THz field experiences intervalley scattering and nonparabolicity of the conduction band. On the other hand, a simple electron transport model shows that the reduction in intervalley scattering is mainly due to the increase in the electron-hole scattering rate with the increase in the carrier density. This increase in the electron-hole scattering rate limits the maximum kinetic energy attainable by the electrons and thus reduces the observed nonlinear absorption.

RESUMO

The formation of mobile charges in a roll-to-roll processed poly-3-hexylthiophene-fullerene bulk heterojunction film is observed directly by using transient terahertz spectroscopy with sub-100 fs temporal resolution. The transient terahertz ac conductivity reveals that 20% of the incident pump photons are converted into highly delocalized charges within the 40 fs, 3.1 eV pump pulse duration, which then rapidly becomes localized within 120 fs. Approximately 2/3 of these carriers subsequently decay, possibly into an exciton, on a 1 ps time scale.

RESUMO

In this work we present a technique for optically modulating a terahertz pulse inside a parallel plate waveguide. A novel semiconductor filled waveguide is formed by coating both sides of a thin, high resistivity silicon slab with a transparent conducting oxide. While the waveguide is intrinsically lossy due to the low conductivity of the oxides, it permits photoexcitation through the plates, generating free carriers within the silicon that modulates the terahertz pulse transmission. We demonstrate this modulation by observing the Drude response of photoexcited carriers within the silicon in a narrow strip inside the waveguide.

RESUMO

We measured ATP synthase activities in mitochondria isolated from livers of lambs with ceroid lipofuscinosis (OCL6) and compared them with those from similar isolations from obligate heterozygous and control lambs. Addition of excess Ca2+ to the incubation mixture resulted in an up-regulation of activity in mitochondria from control lambs but down-regulation in those from OCL6 affected lambs. The mean change in activity with Ca2+ for heterozygous animals was midway between those from control and affected groups being significantly different from control but not from affected. The change in ATP synthase activity to added Ca2+ was also measured in isolated mitochondria from affected and control lambs from 3 days to 25 months of age. As above, there was down-regulation to the addition of Ca2+ in affected lambs. There was a fall in percentage change to Ca2+ with age in both affected and control lambs. This was not significantly different in affected lambs indicating it was not associated with the stage of disease. The above in vitro results, if extrapolated to neurons in vivo, imply a potential dysfunction of mitochondria in OCL6 lambs that could lead to calcium mediated neurotoxicity and neuron death due to production of free radicals as implicit in the energy-linked excitotoxic hypothesis.
