RESUMO

Technetium-99 immobilization in low-temperature nuclear waste forms often relies on additives that reduce environmentally mobile pertechnetate (TcO4-) to insoluble Tc(IV) species. However, this is a short-lived solution unless reducing conditions are maintained over the hazardous life cycle of radioactive wastes (some ∼10,000 years). Considering recent experimental observations, this work explores how rapid formation of ettringite [Ca6Al2(SO4)3(OH)12·26(H2O)], a common mineral formed in cementitious waste forms, may be used to directly immobilize TcO4-. Results from ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and solid-phase characterization techniques, including synchrotron X-ray absorption, fluorescence, and diffraction methods, support successful incorporation of TcO4- into the ettringite crystal structure via sulfate substitution when synthesized by aqueous precipitation methods. One sulfate and one water are replaced with one TcO4- and one OH- during substitution, where Ca2+-coordinated water near the substitution site is deprotonated to form OH- for charge compensation upon TcO4- substitution. Furthermore, AIMD calculations support favorable TcO4- substitution at the SO42- site in ettringite rather than gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O, formed as a secondary mineral phase) by at least 0.76 eV at 298 K. These results are the first of their kind to suggest that ettringite may contribute to TcO4- immobilization and the overall lifetime performance of cementitious waste forms.

RESUMO

A mixed alkaline-earth powellite, Ca0.84Sr0.16MoO4 (calcium strontium molybdate), was synthesized by a flux method and its crystal structure was solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) data. The compound crystallized in the I41/a space group as with a typical CaMoO4 powellite, but with larger unit-cell parameters and unit-cell volume as a result of the partial incorporation of larger Sr cations into the Ca sites within the crystal. The unit cell and volume were well fitted with the trendline calculated from literature values, and the powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD) pattern of the ground crystal is in good agreement with the calculated pattern from the solved structure.

RESUMO

A cadmium germanium arsenide compound, Cd3Ge2As4, was synthesized using a double-containment fused quartz ampoule method within a rocking furnace and a melt-quench technique. The crystal structure was determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopies (i.e. SEM, STEM, and TEM), and selected area diffraction (SAD) and confirmed with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The chemistry was verified with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).

RESUMO

Six different rare-earth oxyapatites, including Ca2 RE 8(SiO4)6O2 (RE = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, or Yb) and NaLa9(SiO4)6O2, were synthesized using solution-based processes followed by cold pressing and sinter-ing. The crystal structures of the synthesized oxyapatites were determined from powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD) and their chemistries verified with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). All the oxyapatites were isostructural within the hexa-gonal space group P63/m and showed similar unit-cell parameters. The isolated [SiO4]4- tetra-hedra in each crystal are linked by the cations at the 4f and 6h sites occupied by RE 3+ and Ca2+ in Ca2 RE 8(SiO4)6O2 or La3+ and Na+ in NaLa9(SiO4)6O2. The lattice parameters, cell volumes, and densities of the synthesized oxyapatites fit well to the trendlines calculated from literature values.

RESUMO

A lanthanide borosilicate, trineodymium borosilicate or Nd3BSi2O10, was synthesized using a flux method with LiCl, and its structure was determined from X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The structure is composed of layers with [SiO4]4- and [BSiO6]5- anions alternating along the c axis linked by Nd3+ cations between them.

RESUMO

To prevent the release of radioiodine during the reprocessing of used nuclear fuel or in the management of other wastes, many technologies have been developed for iodine capture. The capture is only part of the challenge as a durable waste form is required to ensure safe disposal of the radioiodine. This work presents the first durability studies in dilute conditions of two AgI-containing waste forms: hot-isostatically pressed silver mordenite (AgZ) and spark plasma sintered silver-functionalized silica aerogel (SFA) iodine waste forms (IWF). Using the single-pass flow-through (SPFT) test method, the dissolution rates respective to Si, Al, Ag and I were measured for variants of the IWFs. By combining solution and solid analysis information on the corrosion mechanism neutral-to-alkaline conditions was elucidated. The AgZ samples were observed to have corrosion preferentially occur at secondary phases with higher Al and alkali content. These phases contained a lower proportion of I compared with the matrix. The SFA samples experienced a higher extent of corrosion at Si-rich particles, but an increased addition of Si to the waste led to an improvement in corrosion resistance. The dissolution rates for the IWF types are of similar magnitude to other Si-based waste form materials measured using SPFT.

RESUMO

A redox-active metal-organic composite material shows improved and selective O2 adsorption over N2 with respect to individual components (MIL-101 and ferrocene). The O2 sensitivity of the composite material arises due to the formation of maghemite nanoparticles with the pore of the metal-organic framework material.

RESUMO

There is considerable variation in the phenotypic appearance of individuals with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD), which may translate into differences in disease progression in addition to underlying disease etiology. In this publication, we report on the demographic and clinical characteristics of 162 individuals diagnosed with clinically probable PD from January 1998 to June 2003 who resided in predominantly rural communities in central California. The majority of the subjects were Caucasian, male, and between 60 and 79 years of age. The akinetic-rigid and tremor-dominant subtypes were more common than the mixed subtype. The majority of subjects displayed motor signs of rigidity (92.0%), bradykinesia (95.7%), and gait problems (87.0%), whereas less than half (43.3%) of the subjects displayed a tremor. Three fourths of patients received a Hoehn and Yahr Scale score of Stage 2 or higher. One third of the patients were treated with levodopa, and patients under 60 years of age were more likely to be treated with dopamine agonists. Within 3 years after first diagnosis, 13% of subjects showed some signs of depression and 17% of subjects met criteria for mild dementia. Among our subjects, 17.3% reported a family history of PD in first- or second-degree relatives,15.4% a family history of essential tremor, and 14.2% of Alzheimer's disease. This study represents the most extensive phenotypic description of rural U.S. residents in the initial stages of PD who were recruited in a population-based manner; future follow-up may provide valuable information regarding the prognostic indication of these symptoms/signs and improve our understanding of the underlying etiology of PD.
