RESUMO

Rocaglaol, a representative flavagline, has attracted significant attention because of its unique chemical structure and biological activities. This paper reports a mild and scalable copper-catalyzed enantioselective conjugate addition of benzofuran-3(2H)-one to α,ß-unsaturated thioamides. This method allows for the concise synthesis of all possible stereoisomers of a key intermediate of rocaglaol and its derivatives in a highly diastereo- and enantioselective manner using different chiral phosphine ligands. Theoretical insights into the reaction mechanism and the origin of ligand-dependent diastereodivergence were obtained using density functional theory calculations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Long-term effects of individualized acupuncture in persons with chronic neck pain (CNP) remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of pressure pain, sensory-based individualized acupuncture for relieving CNP. DESIGN: A 24-week multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial. (ChiCTR1800016371). SETTING: Outpatient settings at 4 clinical centers in China from May 2018 to March 2020. PARTICIPANTS: 716 participants with CNP. INTERVENTION: Participants were randomly assigned to a waiting list (WL) group or to 1 of 3 interventions, which consisted of 10 sessions over 4 weeks: higher sensitive acupoints (HSA), lower sensitive acupoints (LSA), and sham acupoints (SA) acupuncture groups. MEASUREMENTS: The primary outcome was the change in the visual analogue scale (VAS) score for neck pain (range, 0 to 100) from baseline to 4 weeks, with a difference of 10 points considered the minimum clinically important threshold. The VAS was also assessed every 4 weeks through 24 weeks. RESULTS: The modified intention-to-treat population included 683 participants. The mean baseline VAS was 50.36, 50.10, 49.24, and 49.16 for HSA, LSA, SA, and WL, respectively. Compared with a mean baseline to week 4 change of -12.16 in the HSA group, the mean changes were -10.19 in the LSA group (net difference [ND], -1.97 [95% CI, -5.03 to 1.09]), -6.11 in the SA group (ND, -6.05 [CI, -9.10 to -3.00]), and -2.24 in the WL group (ND, -9.93 [CI, -12.95 to -6.90]). The intervention effects persisted at 24-week follow-up. LIMITATION: Lack of complete blinding and limited generalizability. CONCLUSION: Individualized acupuncture interventions using high- or low-sensitivity acupuncture points were more effective in reducing CNP than SA and WL control groups sustained through 24 weeks, but the magnitude of relative improvement did not reach a minimal clinically important difference. RESUMO

The healing of large skin defects remains a significant challenge in clinical settings. The lack of epidermal sources, such as autologous skin grafting, limits full-thickness skin defect repair and leads to excessive scar formation. Skin organoids have the potential to generate a complete skin layer, supporting in-situ skin regeneration in the defect area. In this study, skin organoid spheres, created with human keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells, showed a specific structure with a stromal core surrounded by surface keratinocytes. We selected an appropriate bioink and innovatively combined an extrusion-based bioprinting technique with dual-photo source cross-linking technology to ensure the overall mechanical properties of the 3D bioprinted skin organoid. Moreover, the 3D bioprinted skin organoid was customized to match the size and shape of the wound site, facilitating convenient implantation. When applied to full-thickness skin defects in immunodeficient mice, the 3D bioprinted human-derived skin organoid significantly accelerated wound healing through in-situ regeneration, epithelialization, vascularization, and inhibition of excessive inflammation. The combination of skin organoid and 3D bioprinting technology can overcome the limitations of current skin substitutes, offering a novel treatment strategy to address large-area skin defects.

RESUMO

Futuristic technologies such as morphing aircrafts and super-strong artificial muscles depend on metal alloys being as strong as ultrahigh-strength steel yet as flexible as a polymer1-3. However, achieving such 'strong yet flexible' alloys has proven challenging4-9 because of the inevitable trade-off between strength and flexibility5,8,10. Here we report a Ti-50.8 at.% Ni strain glass alloy showing a combination of ultrahigh yield strength of σy ≈ 1.8 GPa and polymer-like ultralow elastic modulus of E ≈ 10.5 GPa, together with super-large rubber-like elastic strain of approximately 8%. As a result, it possesses a high flexibility figure of merit of σy/E ≈ 0.17 compared with existing structural materials. In addition, it can maintain such properties over a wide temperature range of -80 °C to +80 °C and demonstrates excellent fatigue resistance at high strain. The alloy was fabricated by a simple three-step thermomechanical treatment that is scalable to industrial lines, which leads not only to ultrahigh strength because of deformation strengthening, but also to ultralow modulus by the formation of a unique 'dual-seed strain glass' microstructure, composed of a strain glass matrix embedded with a small number of aligned R and B19' martensite 'seeds'. In situ X-ray diffractometry shows that the polymer-like deformation behaviour of the alloy originates from a nucleation-free reversible transition between strain glass and R and B19' martensite during loading and unloading. This exotic alloy with the potential for mass producibility may open a new horizon for many futuristic technologies, such as morphing aerospace vehicles, superman-type artificial muscles and artificial organs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) patients are at an elevated risk of developing severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The objective of this study was to assess antibody responses and safety profiles six months after the third dose of the inactivated acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine in MASLD patients. METHODS: This study included MASLD patients and healthy volunteers without a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Blood samples were collected six months after receiving the third dose of the inactivated vaccine to measure the levels of neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) and anti-spike IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. RESULTS: A total of 335 participants (214 MASLD patients and 121 healthy volunteers) were enrolled. The seroprevalence of NAb was 61.7% (132 of 214) in MASLD patients and 74.4% (90 of 121) in healthy volunteers, which was a significant difference (p = 0.018). Statistically significant differences in IgG seroprevalence were also observed between MASLD patients and healthy volunteers (p = 0.004). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the severity of MASLD (OR, 2.97; 95% CI, 1.32-6.68; p = 0.009) and age (OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.06; p = 0.004) were independent risk factors for NAb negativity in MASLD patients. Moderate/severe MASLD patients had a lower NAb seroprevalence than mild MASLD patients (45.0% vs. 65.5%, p = 0.016). CONCLUSION: Lower antibody responses were observed in MASLD patients six months after their third dose of the inactivated vaccine than in healthy volunteers, providing further assistance in monitoring patients who are more vulnerable to hypo-responsiveness to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Some clinicopathological risk stratification systems (CRSSs) such as the leibovich score have been used to predict the postoperative prognosis of patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), but there are no reliable noninvasive preoperative indicators for predicting postoperative prognosis in clinical practice. PURPOSE: To assess the value of a deep learning (DL) model based on CT images in predicting the postoperative prognosis of patients with ccRCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 382 patients with ccRCC were retrospectively enrolled andallocated to training (n = 229) or testing (n = 153) cohorts at a 6:4 ratio. The features were extracted from precontrast-phase (PCP), corticomedullary-phase (CMP) and nephrographic-phase (NP) CT images with ResNet50, and then extreme learning machines (ELMs) were used to construct classification models. The DL model and Leibovich score were compared and combined. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) were used to evaluate model performance. RESULTS: Compared with other single-phase DL models, the three-phase CT-based DL model achieved the best performance, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.839. Combining the three-phase DL model and the Leibovich score (AUC = 0.823) into a nomogram (AUC = 0.888) statistically improved performance (IDINomogram vs. Three-phase = 0.1358, IDINomogram vs. Leibovich = 0.1393, [Formula: see text]< 0.001). CONCLUSION: The CT-based DL model could be valuable for preoperatively predicting the prognosis of patients with ccRCC, and combining it with the Leibovich score can further improve its predictive performance.

RESUMO

The embryonic cerebrospinal fluid (eCSF) plays an essential role in the development of the central nervous system (CNS), influencing processes from neurogenesis to lifelong cognitive functions. An important process affecting eCSF composition is inflammation. Inflammation during development can be studied using the maternal immune activation (MIA) mouse model, which displays altered cytokine eCSF composition and mimics neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The limited nature of eCSF as a biosample restricts its research and has hindered our understanding of the eCSF's role in brain pathologies. Specifically, investigation of the small molecule composition of the eCSF is lacking, leaving this aspect of the eCSF composition under-studied. We report here the eCSF metabolome as a resource for investigating developmental neuropathologies from a metabolic perspective. Our reference metabolome includes comprehensive MS1 and MS2 datasets and evaluates two mouse strains (CD-1 and C57Bl/6) and two developmental time points (E12.5 and E14.5). We illustrate the reference metabolome's utility by using untargeted metabolomics to identify eCSF-specific compositional changes following MIA. We uncover MIA-relevant metabolic pathways as differentially abundant in eCSF and validate changes in glucocorticoid and kynurenine pathways through targeted metabolomics approaches. Our resource will guide future studies into the causes of MIA neuropathology and the impact of eCSF composition on brain development.

RESUMO

The choroid plexus (ChP) is a vital brain barrier and source of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Here, we use longitudinal two-photon imaging in awake mice and single-cell transcriptomics to elucidate the mechanisms of ChP regulation of brain inflammation. We used intracerebroventricular injections of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) to model meningitis in mice and observed that neutrophils and monocytes accumulated in the ChP stroma and surged across the epithelial barrier into the CSF. Bi-directional recruitment of monocytes from the periphery and, unexpectedly, macrophages from the CSF to the ChP helped eliminate neutrophils and repair the barrier. Transcriptomic analyses detailed the molecular steps accompanying this process and revealed that ChP epithelial cells transiently specialize to nurture immune cells, coordinating their recruitment, survival, and differentiation as well as regulation of the tight junctions that control the permeability of the ChP brain barrier. Collectively, we provide a mechanistic understanding and a comprehensive roadmap of neuroinflammation at the ChP brain barrier.

RESUMO

With an extremely high dimensionality, the spatial degree of freedom of entangled photons is a key tool for quantum foundation and applied quantum techniques. To fully utilize the feature, the essential task is to experimentally characterize the multiphoton spatial wave function including the entangled amplitude and phase information at different evolutionary stages. However, there is no effective method to measure it. Quantum state tomography is costly, and quantum holography requires additional references. Here, we introduce quantum Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing to perform efficient and reference-free measurement of the biphoton spatial wave function. The joint probability distribution of photon pairs at the back focal plane of a microlens array is measured and used for amplitude extraction and phase reconstruction. In the experiment, we observe that the biphoton amplitude correlation becomes weak while phase correlation shows up during free-space propagation. Our work is a crucial step in quantum physical and adaptive optics and paves the way for characterizing quantum optical fields with high-order correlations or topological patterns.

RESUMO

To determine age-related alterations in vortex veins in healthy subjects. A total of 228 healthy subjects (aged 4 to 86 years) were recruited and divided into four groups (G1, <21 years; G2, 21-40 years; G3, 41-60 years; and G4, 61-86 years). The clinical characteristics of the participants were recorded, and parameters including the number of vortex vein roots (NVVR), the central vortex vein diameter (CVVD), the mean root area of the vortex vein (MRAVV), and the weighted mean of the thickest branch diameter (WMTBD) were obtained by marking the vortex veins on indocyanine green angiography (ICGA). The NVVR in the age group over 60 years old was significantly lower than that in other age groups (P < 0.05). The CVVD, MRAVV, and WMTBD of all age groups increased with increasing age (P < 0.05). The NVVR was unevenly distributed among the quadrants (P < 0.001). The proportions of type four vortex veins (complete systems including ampulla) and anastomotic branches of the vortex veins were significantly increased in elderly participants over 50 years of age (P < 0.05). Subfoveal choroidal thickness was significantly correlated with age, NVVR, CVVD and MRAVV (P < 0.05). This is the first study to reveal age-related alterations in vortex veins on ICGA in a healthy population. Aging may lead to partial vortex occlusion and residual vortex dilation. As age increases, anastomotic branches increasingly appear between the originally independent vortex veins. Translational relevance: Aging may lead to partial vortex occlusion and residual vortex dilation.

RESUMO

Senecaviurs A (SVA) infection, an emerging infectious disease in pig populations, is characterized by vesicular lesions predominantly affecting the mouth, snout, and hooves of infected pigs, similar to the symptoms of Foot and Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV). This disease first spread into China in 2015, causing great panic in the pig breeding industry. To determine the prevalence of SVA in pig herds in China from 2018 to 2021, a total of 4,901 pig tissue samples were collected from 18 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (P.A.M.s) for epidemiological investigation, virus isolation and genetic analysis. In 2021, the individual positive rates (IPRs) from the perspective of spatial distribution in East China, South China, Central China, North China, Southwest China, Northwest China, and Northeast China were 0, 0, 1.69, 0.94, 11.70, 3.31 and 2.21%, respectively. The herd positive rates (HPRs) were 0, 0, 9.52, 9.09, 50.00, 7.69 and 23.08%. From the perspective of temporal distribution, the IPR showed an overall downwards trend from 2018 to 2021, with only a slight increase in 2020. Moreover, the HPR decreased from 36.63 to 10.07%. From the perspective of population distribution in 2021, the IPR (2.62%) and HPR (12.00%) in apparently healthy pig herds (slaughterhouses) were greater than those in non-healthy pig herds (2.10 and 5.13%, respectively), consistent with the results in 2019. To characterize the prevalent strains, 10 SVA strains isolated from positive samples in 2019 were clustered in Clades I and VII; SVA-FJ039-2019, SVA-HuN032-2019, SVA-GX011-2019, SVA-FJ036-2019, SVA-GXF011-2019 and SVA-GXF053-2019 were clustered in Clade I; and SVA-FJ018-2019, SVA-SD069-2019, SVA-SD072-2019, and SVA-SD074-2019 were clustered in Clade VII. In conclusion, until 2021, the prevalence of SVA in pig herds in China was still relatively high, the contaminated area was still large, and there were a number of hidden infections. In the future, the epidemic status of SVA in pig herds in China must be closely monitored and the prevention and control measures must be adjusted in a timely manner.

RESUMO

The human brain can effectively perform Facial Expression Recognition (FER) with a few samples by utilizing its cognitive ability. However, unlike the human brain, even the well-trained deep neural network is data-dependent and lacks cognitive ability. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes a novel framework, Brain Machine Generative Adversarial Networks (BM-GAN), which utilizes the concept of brain's cognitive ability to guide a Convolutional Neural Network to generate LIKE-electroencephalograph (EEG) features. More specifically, we firstly obtain EEG signals triggered from facial emotion images, then we adopt BM-GAN to carry out the mutual generation of image visual features and EEG cognitive features. BM-GAN intends to use the cognitive knowledge learnt from EEG signals to instruct the model to perceive LIKE-EEG features. Thereby, BM-GAN has a superior performance for FER like the human brain. The proposed model consists of VisualNet, EEGNet, and BM-GAN. More specifically, VisualNet can obtain image visual features from facial emotion images and EEGNet can obtain EEG cognitive features from EEG signals. Subsequently, the BM-GAN completes the mutual generation of image visual features and EEG cognitive features. Finally, the predicted LIKE-EEG features of test images are used for FER. After learning, without the participation of the EEG signals, an average classification accuracy of 96.6 % is obtained on Chinese Facial Affective Picture System dataset using LIKE-EEG features for FER. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can produce an excellent performance for FER.

RESUMO

Aristolochic acids (AAs), which are a group of nitrophenanthrene carboxylic acids formed by Aristolochia plant, have become an increasing serious threat to humans due to their nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity. Fast and accurate approaches capable of simultaneous sensing of aristolochic acids (I-IV) are vital to avoid intake of such compounds. In this research, the novel ratiometric fluorescence zinc metal-organic framework and its nanowire have been prepared. The two different coordination modes (tetrahedral configuration and twisted triangular bipyramidal configuration) within zinc metal-organic framework lead to the significant double emissions. The ratiometric fluorescence approach based on nanowire provides a broader concentration range (3.00 × 10-7~1.00 × 10-4 M) and lower limit of detection (3.70 × 10-8 M) than that based on zinc metal-organic framework (1.00 × 10-6~1.00 × 10-4 M, 5.91 × 10-7 M). The RSDs of the results are in the range 1.4-3.5% (nanowire). The density functional theory calculations and UV-Vis absorption verify that the sensing mechanism is due to charge transfer and energy transfer. Excellent spiked recoveries for AAs(I-IV) in soil and water support that nanowire is competent to simultaneously detect these targets in real samples, and the proposed approach has potential as a fluorescence sensing platform for the simultaneous detection of AAs (I-IV) in complex systems.

RESUMO

It is generally believed that the main influencing factors of plant metabolism are genetic and environmental factors. However, the transformation and catalysis of metabolic intermediates by endophytic fungi have become a new factor and resource attracting attention in recent years. There are over 2000 precious plant species in the Astragalus genus. In the past decade, at least 303 high-value metabolites have been isolated from the Astragalus medicinal plants, including 124 saponins, 150 flavonoids, two alkaloids, six sterols, and over 20 other types of compounds. These medicinal plants contain abundant endophytic fungi with unique functions, and nearly 600 endophytic fungi with known identity have been detected, but only about 35 strains belonging to 13 genera have been isolated. Among them, at least four strains affiliated to Penicillium roseopurpureum, Alternaria eureka, Neosartorya hiratsukae, and Camarosporium laburnicola have demonstrated the ability to biotransform four saponin compounds from the Astragalus genus, resulting in the production of 66 new compounds, which have significantly enhanced our understanding of the formation of metabolites in plants of the Astragalus genus. They provide a scientific basis for improving the cultivation quality of Astragalus plants through the modification of dominant fungal endophytes or reshaping the endophytic fungal community. Additionally, they open up new avenues for the discovery of specialized, green, efficient, and sustainable biotransformation pathways for complex pharmaceutical intermediates.

RESUMO

African swine fever (ASF) is a contagious and fatal disease caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), which can infect pigs of all breeds and ages. Most infected pigs have poor prognosis, leading to substantial economic losses for the global pig industry. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a safe and efficient commercial vaccine against ASF. The development of ASF vaccine can be traced back to 1960. However, because of its large genome, numerous encoded proteins, and complex virus particle structure, currently, no effective commercial vaccine is available. Several strategies have been applied in vaccine design, some of which are potential candidates for vaccine development. This review provides a comprehensive analysis on the safety and effectiveness, suboptimal immunization effects at high doses, absence of standardized evaluation criteria, notable variations among strains of the same genotype, and the substantial impact of animal health on the protective efficacy against viral challenge. All the information will be helpful to the ASF vaccine development.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Delirium is a serious complication of cardiac surgery and a common clinical problem. The study aimed to identify the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of delirium in older patients (≥ 65 years) with first-ever acute myocardial infarction (AMI) who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed in a hospital in northern China. A total of 1033 older patients with first-ever AMI who underwent PCI between January 2018 and April 2021 were screened for delirium using the CAM-ICU method. Clinical and laboratory data were collected. RESULTS: A total of 134 (12.97%) patients were diagnosed with delirium. Patients with delirium were older. The most common concomitant diseases were cardiac arrest, chronic renal failure, and a history of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). Delirious patients experienced more times of mechanical ventilation, more intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support, high postoperative immediate pain score (VAS), more non-bedside cardiac rehabilitation, and longer total length of stay and cardiac care unit (CCU) time. Multivariable logistic regression showed that age, mechanical ventilation, postoperative immediate pain score, and non-bedside cardiac rehabilitation were independently associated with delirium. Delirium was an independent predictor of prolonged CCU stay, total length of stay, and 1year mortality. CONCLUSION: Age, mechanical ventilation, postoperative immediate pain score, and non-bedside cardiac rehabilitation were independently closely related to delirium in older patients with first-ever AMI who underwent PCI. Delirium was associated with a higher 1year all-cause mortality.

RESUMO

Objective: Our pilot study shows that a modified moxibustion therapy called Ma's bamboo-based medicinal moxibustion can alleviate the symptoms of low back pain in lumbar disc herniation (LDH), and has the potential to treat LDH. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ma's bamboo-based medicinal moxibustion for low back pain in LDH. Methods: A total of 312 LDH patients with low back pain were randomized to receive Ma's bamboo-based medicinal moxibustion (MBMM) or acupuncture (AT). The primary efficacy measure was the change of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) on the 14th day compared with that at baseline. The secondary efficacy measures included VAS score, Oswestry disability index (ODI), modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (M-JOA) score, and the content of ß-endorphin (ß-EP) and substance-P (SP). The safety measures included the occurrence of adverse events and the changes in laboratory indicators. Results: In total, 304 patients were incorporated for the analysis of efficacy, including 96 males and 208 females, aged 21-65 years. There was no statistically significant difference in the change of VAS score between the two groups on the 14th day [mean difference (95% CI) = -2.31 (-2.48, -2.13) and -2.28 (-2.45, -2.11), respectively; p = 0.819]. The VAS, ODI, and M-JOA scores changed after the intervention in both groups (p <0.001), with increased ß-EP content (p = 0.014, p = 0.032) and decreased SP content (p <0.001, p = 0.048). The ODI score (p = 0.039) and M-JOA score (p = 0.032) of the MBMM group on the 28th day were lower than those of the AT group. Conclusion: The efficacy of Ma's bamboo-based medicinal moxibustion therapy in relieving low back pain of LDH patients is comparable to that of acupuncture, and it has post-effect advantages in improving lumbar dysfunction and daily living ability, which can be used as a safe and effective alternative method for LDH treatment.

RESUMO

Background: It remains unclear whether BPIV3 infection leads to stress granules formation and whether G3BP1 plays a role in this process and in viral replication. This study aims to clarify the association between BPIV3 and stress granules, explore the effect of G3BP1 on BPIV3 replication, and provide significant insights into the mechanisms by which BPIV3 evades the host's antiviral immunity to support its own survival. Methods: Here, we use Immunofluorescence staining to observe the effect of BPIV3 infection on the assembly of stress granules. Meanwhile, the expression changes of eIF2α and G3BP1 were determined. Overexpression or siRNA silencing of intracellular G3BP1 levels was examined for its regulatory control of BPIV3 replication. Results: We identify that the BPIV3 infection elicited phosphorylation of the eIF2α protein. However, it did not induce the assembly of stress granules; rather, it inhibited the formation of stress granules and downregulated the expression of G3BP1. G3BP1 overexpression facilitated the formation of stress granules within cells and hindered viral replication, while G3BP1 knockdown enhanced BPIV3 expression. Conclusion: This study suggest that G3BP1 plays a crucial role in BPIV3 suppressing stress granule formation and viral replication.

RESUMO

Hydrogel-based electronics have inherent similarities to biological tissues and hold potential for wearable applications. However, low conductivity, poor stretchability, nonpersonalizability, and uncontrollable dehydration during use limit their further development. In this study, projection stereolithography 3D printing high-conductive hydrogel for flexible passive wireless sensing is reported. The prepared photocurable silver-based hydrogel is rapidly planarized into antenna shapes on substrates using surface projection stereolithography. After partial dehydration, silver flakes within the circuits form sufficient conductive pathways to achieve high conductivity (387 S cm-1). By sealing the circuits to prevent further dehydration, the resistance remains stable when tensile strain is less than 100% for at least 30 days. Besides, the sealing materials provide versatile functionalities, such as stretchability and shape memory property. Customized flexible radio frequency identification tags are fabricated by integrating with commercial chips to complete the accurate recognition of eye movement, realizing passive wireless sensing.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To observe the clinical efficacy of acupuncture in treating erectile dysfunction (ED). METHODS: A total of 64 ED patients were randomly divided into an acupuncture group (32 cases, 2 case dropped out) and a western medication group (32 cases, 2 cases dropped out). In the acupuncture group, acupuncture treatment was applied at Baihui (GV 20), Qihai (CV 6), Guanyuan (CV 4), Zhongji (CV 3), Dahe (KI 12), Qugu (CV 2), Zusanli (ST 36), and etc., two groups of acupoints were used alternately, 30 min each time, once every other day. In the western medication group, 50 mg of sildenafil tablet was took orally 1 h before sexual activity. Both groups were treated for 30 d. The international index of erectile function citrate (IIEF-5) score, self rating anxiety scale (SAS) score, self rating depression scale (SDS) score, TCM syndrome score were observed before and after treatment, and in follow-up of 2 weeks after treatment completion, the serum testosterone (T) level was detected before and after treatment, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment and in follow-up, the IIEF-5 scores were increased compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.01). In follow-up, the IIEF-5 score in the acupuncture group was ascended compared with that in the western medication group (P<0.05). Except for the SDS and TCM syndrome scores in the western medication group of follow-up, the SAS scores, SDS scores, and the TCM syndrome scores were decreased after treatment and in follow-up compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.01, P<0.05); in the acupuncture group, the SAS scores, SDS scores and the TCM syndrome scores after treatment and in follow-up were lower than those in the western medication group (P<0.01). After treatment, the serum T levels were increased compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.01). The total effective rate of the acupuncture group was 83.3% (25/30), and it was 86.7% (26/30) in the western medication group, there was no significant difference in total effective rate between the two groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture can effectively improve erectile function, anxiety and depression state, and TCM syndrome in ED patients, and has a advantage of posterior effect compared with western medication treatment.
