RESUMO

The solution phase anion binding behavior of a water-stable bidentate pnictogen bond donor was studied. A modest change in the visible absorption spectrum allowed for the determination of the binding constants. High binding constants were observed with cyanide, cyanate, and acetate, and these were corroborated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The receptor could be recovered free from the anion following treatment with methyl triflate, confirming that it remains intact. The tight binding of cyanide and water stability were exploited to use this system as a supramolecular catalyst in a phase-transfer Strecker reaction, further demonstrating the utility of pnictogen bonding as a tool in noncovalent catalysis.

RESUMO

Aortic dissection is a complex, intramural, and dynamic condition involving multiple mechanisms, hence, difficult to observe. In the present study, a controlled in vitro aortic dissection was performed using tension-inflation tests on notched rabbit aortic segments. The mechanical test was combined with conventional (cCT) and synchrotron (sCT) computed tomography for in situ imaging of the macro- and micro-structural morphological changes of the aortic wall during dissection. We demonstrate that the morphology of the notch and the aorta can be quantified in situ at different steps of the aortic dissection, and that the notch geometry correlates with the critical pressure. The phenomena prior to propagation of the notch are also described, for instance the presence of a bulge at the tip of the notch is identified, deforming the remaining wall. Finally, our method allows us to visualize for the first time the propagation of an aortic dissection in real-time with a resolution that has never previously been reached. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: With the present study, we investigated the factors leading to the propagation of aortic dissection by reproducing this mechanical process in notched rabbit aortas. Synchrotron CT provided the first visualisation in real-time of an aortic dissection propagation with a resolution that has never previously been reached. The morphology of the intimal tear and aorta was quantified at different steps of the aortic dissection, demonstrating that the early notch geometry correlates with the critical pressure. This quantification is crucial for the development of better criteria identifying patients at risk. Phenomena prior to tear propagation were also described, such as the presence of a bulge at the tip of the notch, deforming the remaining wall.

RESUMO

This work provides original insights to the better understanding of the complex structure-activity relationship of Zr(IV)-pyridylamido-based olefin polymerization catalysts and highlights the importance of the metal-precursor choice (Zr(NMe(2))(4) vs. Zr(Bn)(4)) to prepare precatalysts of unambiguous identity. A temperature-controlled and reversible σ-bond metathesis/protonolysis reaction is found to take place on the Zr(IV)-amido complexes in the 298-383 K temperature range, changing the metal coordination sphere dramatically (from a five-coordinated tris-amido species stabilized by bidentate monoanionic {N,N(-)} ligands to a six-coordinated bis-amido-mono-amino complexes featured by tridentate dianionic {N(-),N,C(-)} ligands). Well-defined neutral Zr(IV)-pyridylamido complexes have been prepared from Zr(Bn)(4) as metal source. Their cationic derivatives [Zr(IV) N(-),N,C(-)}Bn](+)[B(C(6)F(5))(4)](-) have been successfully applied to the room-temperature polymerization of 1-hexene with productivities up to one order of magnitude higher than those reported for the related Hf(IV) state-of-the-art systems. Most importantly, a linear increase of the poly(1-hexene) M(n) values (30-250 kg mol(-1)) has been observed upon catalyst aging. According to that, the major active species (responsible for the increased M(n) polymer values) in the aged catalyst solution, has been identified.

RESUMO

Three workers incurred inhalation exposures to Am oxide as a result of waste sorting and compaction activities. The exposure magnitudes were not fully recognized until the following day when an in-vivo lung count identified a significant lung deposition of Am in a male worker, and DTPA chelation therapy was initiated. Two additional workers (one female and one male) were then identified as sufficiently exposed to also warrant therapy. In-vivo bioassay measurements were performed over the ensuing 6 mo to quantify the 241Am activity in the lungs, liver, and skeleton. Urine and fecal samples were collected and showed readily detectable 241Am. Clinical lab tests and medical evaluations all showed normal results. There were no significant adverse clinical health effects from the therapy. The estimated 241Am inhalation intakes for the three workers were 1,800 Bq, 630 Bq, and 150 Bq. Lung retention showed somewhat longer pulmonary clearance half-times than standard inhalation class W or absorption Type M assumptions. The three subjects underwent slightly different therapy regimens, with therapy effectiveness factors (defined as the ratio of the reference doses without therapy relative to the final assessed doses) of 4.5, 1.9, and 1.7, respectively.
