An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of spring and autumn seasons on the reproductive activity of Merino Socorro Island ewes and their crosses with Pelibuey under heat stress (HS) conditions in the tropics. All ewes (n = 80) were randomly assigned to one of two breeds during the first and second periods, respectively: (1) Twenty Socorro Island Merino ewes (SIM) and (2) 20 Pelibuey Crossbred ewes (PBC). Animals were fed the same diet and given water ad libitum. All statistical analyses were performed using SAS statistical software 9.12 procedures. In both seasons, a mean of more than 80 U of maximum THI was obtained, while in spring and autumn, the minimum THI exceeded 30 and 40 U, respectively. All animals were in oestrus and ovulated in both seasons. The frequency of animals in spring during the first 48 h of oestrus expression was greater (p < 0.05) than 48-55 h but similar (p > 0.05) than 55-65 h; in autumn during the first 48 h and 48-55 h were similar (p > 0.05), but different (p < 0.05) than 55-65 h. The duration of oestrus expression was longer in the spring than in the autumn (p < 0.05). The frequency of animals was higher (p < 0.05) in SIM than in PBC ewes during the first oestrus cycle (1-17 d) and was also higher (p < 0.05) in PBC than in SIM ewes during the second oestrus cycle (18-35 d). The SIM ewes produced more (p < 0.05) progesterone (P4) than the PBC ewes. During the sampling days of the oestrus cycle, more P4 was created in autumn than in spring (p < 0.05). Both breeds showed severe HS. In the future, ewes treated under assisted reproductive programs in the tropics may improve reproductive efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Studies analyzing non-antibiotic alternatives in kidney transplant UTI's are lacking. d-Mannose, a simple sugar, inhibits bacterial attachment to the urothelium, as does Proanthocyanidins; both could act as a synergic strategy preventing UTI; nonetheless their efficacy and safety have not been evaluated in kidney transplant population yet. METHODS: This is a pilot prospective, double-blind randomized trial. Sixty de novo kidney transplant recipients were randomized (1:1) to receive a prophylactic strategy based on a 24-h prolonged release formulation of d-Mannose plus Proanthocyanidins vs. Proanthocyanidins (PAC) alone. The supplements were taken for the first 3 months after kidney transplant and then followed up for 3 months as well. The main objective of the study was to search if the addition of Mannose to PAC alone reduced the incidence of UTI and/or asymptomatic bacteriuria in the first 6 months post-transplantation. RESULTS: 27% of patients experienced one UTI episode (cystitis or pyelonephritis) while asymptomatic bacteriuria was very common (57%). Incidences according UTI type or AB were: 7% vs. 4% for cystitis episode (p 0.3), 4% vs. 5% for pyelonephritis (p 0.5) and 17% vs. 14% for asymptomatic bacteriuria (p 0.4) for patients in the Mannose+PAC group vs. PAC group respectively. The most frequent bacteria isolated in both groups was Escherichia coli (28% of all episodes), UTI or AB due to E. coli was not different according to study group (30% vs. 23% for Mannose+PAC vs. PAC alone p 0.37). CONCLUSIONS: Non-antibiotic therapy is an unmet need to prevent UTI after kidney transplantation; however, the use of d-Mannose plus PAC does not seem capable to prevent it.

In recent years, physical activity levels among youths have declined significantly. This has led to a decline in adherence to physical activity recommendations. In this sense, physical education offers an ideal environment that contributes positively to improving adherence to physical activity recommendations, as it teaches students movement-related skills and knowledge. The objective of the present research was to investigate the relationship between physical activity levels, body composition, fitness in Physical Education, and body dissatisfaction levels, and to analyse sex differences in relation to the study variables. The sample was formed of 1166 participants from the 1st and 2nd secondary compulsory education, of which 642 were boys (age 13.16 ± 0.91), and 524 girls (age 13.08 ± 0.85). The measure of physical activity was the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A). Body composition was assessed using weight and height to calculate their body mass index. Cardiorespiratory capacity was assessed using the Course-Navette test in Physical Education lessons. The results showed the relationship between physical activity and body mass index, cardiorespiratory capacity, and body satisfaction. It was also confirmed that higher levels of physical activity were associated with a lower body mass index, improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness, and lower levels of body dissatisfaction to a greater extent in boys than in girls. The study concludes that improvements in the study variables were associated with increased physical activity. In addition, it seems necessary to promote healthy lifestyles in physical education lessons, especially during adolescence, as they could serve as a gateway for the improvement of health-related fitness in future generations. Increasing the amount of physical activity among young people is vital. Therefore, it would be essential to develop intervention programs in physical education classes, especially during adolescence, aimed at promoting and increasing physical activity and its benefits.

Rationale: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with impaired glycemic control and a higher risk of vascular complications, such as diabetic kidney disease (DKD). However, the effect of apnea-hypopnea suppression on DKD progression is unclear. Objectives: To assess the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) in patients with DKD and OSA. Methods: In a 52-week, multicentric, open-label, parallel, and randomized clinical trial, 185 patients with OSA and DKD were randomized to CPAP and usual care (n = 93) or usual care alone (n = 92). Measurements and Main Results: UACR, estimated glomerular filtration rate, serum concentrations of creatinine and glycated hemoglobin, insulin resistance, lipid concentrations, sleepiness, and quality of life. A 52-week change in UACR from baseline did not differ significantly between the CPAP group and the usual-care group. However, in per-protocol analyses that included 125 participants who met prespecified criteria for adherence, CPAP treatment was associated with a great reduction in UACR (mean difference, -10.56% [95% confidence interval, -19.06 to -2.06]; P = 0.015). CPAP effect on UACR was higher in nonsleepy patients with more severe OSA, worse renal function, and a more recent diagnosis of DKD. CPAP treatment also improved glycemic control and insulin resistance, as well as sleepiness and health-related quality of life. Conclusions: In patients with OSA and DKD, the prescription of CPAP did not result in a statistically significant reduction in albuminuria. However, good adherence to CPAP treatment in addition to usual care may result in long-term albuminuria reduction compared with usual care alone. The TERT/CLPTM1L risk locus on chromosome 5p15.33 is a pleiotropic cancer risk locus in which multiple independent risk alleles have been identified, across well over ten cancer types. We previously conducted a genome-wide association study in uveal melanoma (UM), which uncovered a role for the TERT/CLPTM1L risk locus in this intraocular tumor and identified multiple highly correlated risk alleles. Aiming to unravel the biological mechanisms in UM of this locus, which contains a domain enriched in active chromatin marks and enhancer elements, we demonstrated the allele-specific enhancer activity of this risk region using reporter assays. In UM, we identified the functional variant rs452384, of which the C risk allele is associated with higher gene expression, increased CLPTM1L expression in UM tumors, and a longer telomere length in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays and quantitative mass spectrometry identified NKX2.4 as an rs452384-T-specific binding protein, whereas GATA4 preferentially interacted with rs452384-C. Knockdown of NKX2.4 but not GATA4 resulted in increased TERT and CLPTM1L expression. In summary, the UM risk conferred by the 5p locus is at least partly due to rs452384, for which NKX2.4 presents strong differential binding activity and regulates CLPTM1L and TERT expression. Altogether, our work unraveled some of the complex regulatory mechanisms at the 5p15.33 susceptibility region in UM, and this might also shed light on shared mechanisms with other tumor types affected by this susceptibility region.

Anatase/rutile constituting TiO2 thin films were prepared by sputter deposition, and the influence of the post-annealing step with a narrow window at 200 °C revealed a gaining factor of 5 in H2 production. An in-depth analysis of the photocatalytic performance revealed the dominant role of intermediate states rather than the heterocrystalline nature and the mesoscale structure. Structural, chemical and optical investigations based on scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence supported by ab initio calculation correlated the H2 production with the dual presence of OH- and Ti3+ defects in the form of titanium interstitial atoms. In addition, steady-state photoluminescence measurements determined the chemically active role of ethanol, commonly used as a hole scavenger, in inducing deep hole traps upon dissociation on the surface. These results give new directions for the design of TiO2 based photocatalytic systems for light-driven H2 production through water splitting, guided by a detailed description of defects present on the electronic structure and their chemical identification.

The present review examines the factors and variables that should be considered to obtain, design, and evaluate EFEs that might enhance ruminal NDF degradability. Different combinations of words were introduced in Google Scholar, then scientific articles were examined and included if the reported factors and variables addressed the objective of this review. One-hundred-and-sixteen articles were included. The fungal strains and culture media used to grow white-rot fungi induced the production of specific isoforms of cellulases and xylanases; therefore, EFE products for ruminant feed applications should be obtained in cultures that include the high-fibrous forages used in the diets of those animals. Additionally, the temperature, pH, osmolarity conditions, and EFE synergisms and interactions with ruminal microbiota and endogenous fibrolytic enzymes should be considered. More consistent results have been observed in studies that correlate the cellulase-to-xylanase ratio with ruminant productive behavior. EFE protection (immobilization) allows researchers to obtain enzymatic products that may act under ruminal pH and temperature conditions. It is possible to generate multi-enzyme cocktails that act at different times, re-associate enzymes, and simulate natural protective structures such as cellulosomes. Some EFEs could consistently improve ruminal NDF degradability if we consider fungal cultures and ruminal environmental conditions variables, and include biotechnological tools that might be useful to design novel enzymatic products.

The objective was to review the potential effects of adding anthocyanin delphinidin-3-O-sambubioside (DOS) and cyanidin-3-O-sambubioside (COS) of HS in animal diets. One hundred and four scientific articles published before 2021 in clinics, pharmacology, nutrition, and animal production were included. The grains/concentrate, metabolic exigency, and caloric stress contribute to increasing the reactive oxygen species (ROS). COS and DOS have antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, and anthelmintic activities. In the rumen, anthocyanin might obtain interactions and/or synergisms with substrates, microorganisms, and enzymes which could affect the fiber degradability and decrease potential methane (CH4) emissions; since anthocyanin interferes with ruminal fatty acids biohydrogenation (BH), they can increase the n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), linoleic acid (LA), and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in milk and meat, as well as improving their quality. Anthocyanins reduce plasma oxidation and can be deposited in milk and meat, increasing antioxidant activities. Therefore, the reduction of the oxidation of fats and proteins improves shelf-life. Although studies in ruminants are required, COS and DOS act as inhibitors of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACEi) and rennin expression, regulating the homeostatic control and possibly the milk yield and body weight. By-products of HS contain polyphenols as calyces with positive effects on the average daily gain and fat meat quality.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a recognized risk factor for the development of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Our objectives were to compare the urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of patients with DKD according to OSA severity, and to evaluate the contribution of sleep parameters to their renal function. In a multicenter, observational, cross-sectional study, 214 patients with DKD were recruited. After a sleep study, UACR and eGFR were measured, as well as serum creatinine, fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, insulin resistance, lipid profile and C-reactive protein. UACR was higher in severe OSA patients (920 ± 1053 mg/g) than in moderate (195 ± 232 mg/g, p < 0.001) or mild OSA/non-OSA subjects (119 ± 186 mg/g, p < 0.001). At the same time, eGFR showed an OSA severity-dependent reduction (48 ± 23 vs. 59 ± 21 vs. 73 ± 19 ml/min per 1.73 m2, respectively; p < 0.001). Apnea-hypopnea index (AHI and desaturation index (ODI) were identified as independent predictors for UACR and eGFR, respectively. Therefore, in patients with DKD under optimized treatment, severe OSA is associated with a higher UACR and a lower eGFR, reflecting an additional contribution to the impairment of their renal function, although no causality can be inferred.

OBJECTIVE: The diseases' declaration is a fundamental tool in public health. It's essential to know the magnitude of the problem and decide properly how to solve it. The active finding of cases allows us to know cases that weren't registered by means of the passive declaration. In this study, we intend to analyze whether tuberculosis (TB) cases detected by Tuberculosis Units (TBU) by active finding are different to those reported passively by health professionals. METHODS: Data from the Galician Registry of Tuberculosis (SITUB) were collected analyzing the 2,753 TB cases detected between 2014 and 2018. Confidence intervals were compared and the data were analyzed with Chi square or T-Student tests as required. RESULTS: 44.67% of TB cases of were detected by TBU by active finding. A higher proportion was detected by active finding in bacilliferous, patients with positive culture, pulmonary location and alcoholism. It was lower in HIV (-) and in pediatric cases (under 15 years). Although the proportion of the type of declaration varied depending on the TBU or age, no changes were detected when segregating by TBU or in people over 15 years old. CONCLUSIONS: If active finding wasn't perform, almost half of the cases would be lost. We observed differences in the characteristics of the patients according to the way they have been detected, although we don't know their possible cause. Therefore, the detection of cases by active finding it's an important public health tool.


OBJETIVO: La declaración de enfermedades es una herramienta fundamental en salud pública, imprescindible para conocer la magnitud del problema y poder decidir adecuadamente la manera de resolverlo. La búsqueda activa de casos permite recuperar casos que no fueron registrados mediante la declaración pasiva. En este estudio pretendimos analizar si los casos de tuberculosis (TB) detectados por las Unidades de Tuberculosis (UTB) por búsqueda activa eran equiparables a los declarados de forma pasiva por los profesionales sanitarios o si bien presentaban diferencias. METODOS: Se recogieron los datos del Registro Gallego de Tuberculosis (SITUB), analizando los 2.753 casos de TB detectados entre 2014 y 2018. Se compararon los intervalos de confianza y se analizaron los datos con Ji cuadrado o pruebas T-Student, según fuese requerido. RESULTADOS: El 44,67% de los casos de TB fueron detectados por las UTB mediante búsqueda activa. Se detectó mayor proporción mediante búsqueda activa en bacilíferos, pacientes con cultivo positivo, localización TB pulmonar y alcoholismo, mientras que fue menor en VIH (-) y en casos en edad pediátrica (menores de 15 años). Aunque la proporción del tipo de declaración variaba dependiendo de la UTB o la edad, no se detectaron cambios desagregando por UTB ni al excluir a los menores de 15 años. CONCLUSIONES: De no realizar búsqueda activa, se perderían casi la mitad de los casos. Se observan diferentes características de los pacientes según como hayan sido detectados, aunque no conocemos su posible causa. Por ello, la detección de casos por búsqueda activa es una importante medida de salud pública.

We evaluated the effects of projected, near future ocean acidification (OA) and extreme events of temperature (warming or cooling) on the thermal tolerance of Concholepas concholepas, a coastal benthic keystone species. Three separate trials of an experiment were conducted by exposing juvenile C. concholepas for 1 month to one of two contrasting pCO2 levels (~500 and ~1200 µatm). In addition, each pCO2 level was combined with one of four temperature treatments. The control was 15 °C, whilst the other temperatures were 10 °C (Trial 1), 20 °C (Trial 2) and 25 °C (Trial 3). At the end of each trial, we assessed Critical Thermal maximum (CTmax) and minimum (CTmin) via self-righting success, calculated partial thermal tolerance polygons, measured somatic growth, determined transcription of Heat Shock Proteins 70 (HSP70) and measured oxygen consumption rates. Regardless of pCO2 level, HSP70 transcript levels were significantly higher in juveniles after exposure to extreme temperatures (10 °C and 25 °C) indicating physiological stress. Oxygen consumption rates increased with increasing temperature from 10 °C to 20 °C though showed a decrease at 25 °C. This rate was not affected by pCO2 or the interaction between temperature and pCO2. Juveniles exposed to present-day and near future pCO2 levels at 20 °C showed similar thermal tolerance polygonal areas; whilst changes in both CTmin and CTmax at 25 °C and 10 °C caused narrower and broader areas, respectively. Temperature affected growth, oxygen consumption and HSP70 transcription in small juvenile C. concholepas. Exposure to elevated pCO2 did not affect thermal tolerance, growth or oxygen consumption at temperatures within the thermal range normally experienced by this species in northern Chile (15-20 °C). At elevated pCO2 conditions, however, exposure to warmer (25 °C) or colder (10 °C) temperatures reduced or increased the thermal area, respectively. This study demonstrates the importance of examining the thermal-tolerance edges to better understand how OA and temperature will combine to physiologically challenge inter-tidal organisms.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed and is continuously posing enormous societal and health challenges worldwide. The research community has mobilized to develop novel projects to find a cure or a vaccine, as well as to contribute to mass testing, which has been a critical measure to contain the infection in several countries. Through this article, we share our experiences and learnings as a group of volunteers at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona, Spain. As members of the ORFEU project, an initiative by the Government of Catalonia to achieve mass testing of people at risk and contain the epidemic in Spain, we share our motivations, challenges and the key lessons learnt, which we feel will help better prepare the global society to address similar situations in the future.

Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) is an increasing global problem that, despite being widely recognized in terrestrial systems, has been studied much less in marine habitats. In this study we investigated the effect of ALAN on behavioral and physiological traits of Concholepas concholepas, an important keystone species of the south-eastern Pacific coast. We used juveniles collected in intertidal habitats that had not previously been exposed to ALAN. In the laboratory we exposed them to two treatments: darkness and white LED (Lighting Emitting Diodes) to test for the impacts of ALAN on prey-searching behavior, self-righting time and metabolism. In the field, the distribution of juveniles was observed during daylight-hours to determine whether C. concholepas preferred shaded or illuminated microhabitats. Moreover, we compared the abundance of juveniles collected during day- and night-time hours. The laboratory experiments demonstrated that juveniles of C. concholepas seek out and choose their prey more efficiently in darkened areas. White LED illuminated conditions increased righting times and metabolism. Field surveys indicated that, during daylight hours, juveniles were more abundant in shaded micro-habitats than in illuminated ones. However, during darkness hours, individuals were not seen to aggregate in any particular microhabitats. We conclude that the exposure to ALAN might disrupt important behavioral and physiological traits of small juveniles in this species which, as a mechanism to avoid visual predators, are mainly active at night. It follows that ALAN in coastal areas might modify the entire community structure of intertidal habitats by altering the behavior of this keystone species.

O estudo comparou trabalhadores brasileiros e angolanos em relação à inteligência emocional e ao contágio de emoções, considerando função gerencial, sexo e nível educacional. Participaram 431 trabalhadores, sendo 300 do Brasil e 131 de Angola, 71,5% com ensino superior, 37,8% exercendo função gerencial e idade média de 30 anos. Utilizou-se um survey eletrônico. Os resultados indicaram diferenças entreos países quanto à inteligência, mas não ao contágio. No Brasil, mulheres e gestores obtiveram médias mais elevadas de inteligência emocional, e em Angola, mulheres com ensino superior apresentaram maiores médias de inteligência emocional. Em relação ao contágio de emoções positivas, mulheres gestoras com ensino superior se contagiam menos que homens na mesma posição. Encontraram-se correlações positivas entre inteligência emocional e contágio


This study compared Brazilian and Angolan workers in emotional intelligence and contagion, considering their managerial position, sex, and educational level. Participants were 431 workers, 300 from Brazil and 131 from Angola, 71.5% with a higher education, 37.8% in a management position, and a mean age of 30 years. They answered an electronic questionnaire. Results indicate there are differences in emotional intelligence, but no differences were found for contagion. In Brazil women and managers had higher average of emotional intelligence mean while in Angola women with a higher education had higher average of emotional intelligence. For the contagion of positive emotions, women managers with a higher education were less contagioned than men managers. The results showed positive correlations between emotional intelligence and contagion

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe 5 microepidemics of tuberculosis occurring in schools, establish the risk factors associated with the outbreaks, assess how well a concentric circles strategy for contact tracing predicts infection, and assess the usefulness of genotyping strains in the analysis of the outbreaks. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study assessed 5 epidemic outbreaks of tuberculosis using a standard contact tracing procedure. The outbreaks occurred in 2 day nurseries and 2 high schools between 1998 and 2005. Contacts were stratified using a concentric circle system based on level of exposure. DNA fingerprints of the available strains were determined based on the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) IS6110 and compared with the contact study to interpret the transmission of the infection. RESULTS: We analyzed 5 outbreaks. Eighty-five contacts were analyzed in the first outbreak, 519 in the second, 116 in the third, 655 in the fourth, and 102 in the fifth. The rate of infection was 31%, 29%, 66%, 37.6%, and 32%, respectively. Secondary cases of active disease were detected: 9 in the first outbreak, 16 in the second, 5 in the third, 6 in the fourth, and 13 in the fifth. RFLP analysis revealed that a single strain was involved in 3 of the outbreaks, and in a fourth, at least 2 strains were involved. In outbreaks 2, 3, and 5, there was a significant association between the degree of contact and the probability of infection (P< .05). In all of the outbreaks, the relative risk of developing the disease was associated with the level of exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of contacts based on concentric circles of risk predicts the likelihood of infection. RFLP facilitates analysis of complex transmission routes that are not detected using traditional methods of contact screening.
