RESUMO

The significance of accurate determination of ethanol content in hydrogel formulations was accentuated during COVID-19 pandemic coinciding with the heightened demand for sanitizing agents. The present article proposes three robust methodologies for this purpose: Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and Densitometry with matrix effect correction by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR). All three methods demonstrated outstanding linearity (R2 ≥ 0.99) and minimal errors (< 1.7%), offering simplicity and operational efficiency. FTIR and Raman, being non-destructive and requiring minimal preparation, enable practical on-site analysis capabilities, underscoring the potential of the spectroscopic methods to expedite health investigations and inspections, empowering on-site ethanol determination, and relieving the burden on official laboratories. Additionally, the densitometry with NIR-based approach showcased superior accuracy and precision compared to spectroscopic methods, meeting validation criteria while offering operational advantages over the costly official distillation-based method. Therefore, it stands as a reliable and reproducible technique for comprehensive health and criminal compliance assessments, making it a compelling alternative for both industry and official laboratories.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is a debilitating disorder that affects a significant proportion of the population and leads to impaired functionality and long-term challenges. The first episode of psychosis (FEP) is a critical intervention stage for improving long-term outcomes. The GAPi program was established in São Paulo, Brazil to provide early intervention services and evaluate biomarkers in individuals with FEP. This article delineates the objectives of the GAPi program, detailing its innovative research protocol, examining the clinical outcomes achieved, and discussing the operational challenges encountered during its initial decade of operation. METHODS: The study comprised a prospective cohort of antipsychotic-naïve individuals with first-episode psychosis aged between 16 and 35 years. Participants were recruited from a public psychiatric facility in São Paulo. Emphasizing the initiative's commitment to early intervention, clinical assessments were systematically conducted at baseline and at two months, one year, two years, and five years of treatment to capture both short- and medium-term outcomes. Various assessment tools were utilized, including structured interviews, symptom scales, the Addiction Severity Index, and functional assessments. RESULTS: A total of 232 patients were enrolled in the cohort. Among them, 65.95 % completed the 2-month follow-up. Most patients presented with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, followed by bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder with psychotic features. Treatment response rates and remission rates were evaluated at different time points, with promising outcomes observed. The program also assessed socio-demographic factors, substance use, family history, and genetic and biomarker profiles, providing valuable data for research. DISCUSSION: The GAPi program has emerged as the largest ongoing cohort of antipsychotic-naïve first-episode psychosis in Latin America, contributing to the understanding of early psychosis in low- and middle-income countries. Despite operational challenges, the program has demonstrated efficacy in reducing the duration of untreated psychosis and in improving clinical outcomes. A multidisciplinary approach, including pharmacological treatment, psychosocial interventions, and family involvement, has been instrumental in enhancing treatment adherence and long-term prognosis. CONCLUSION: The GAPi program represents a valuable model for early intervention in first-episode psychosis and provides insights into the pathophysiology, treatment, and long-term outcomes of individuals with schizophrenia and related disorders. Continued research and resource allocation are essential for addressing operational challenges and expanding early intervention services in low- and middle-income countries.

This study proposes a new efficient wireless biosensor based on magnetoelastic waves for antibody detection in human plasma, aiming at the serological diagnosis of COVID-19. The biosensor underwent functionalization with the N antigen - nucleocapsid phosphoprotein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Validation analyses by sodium dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Western blotting (WB), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis and micro-Raman spectroscopy confirmed the selectivity and effective surface functionalization of the biosensor. The research successfully obtained, expressed and purified the recombinant antigen, while plasma samples from COVID-19 positive and negative patients were applied to test the performance of the biosensor. A performance comparison with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) method revealed equivalent diagnostic capacity. These results indicate the robustness of the biosensor in reliably differentiating between positive and negative samples, highlighting its potential as an efficient and low-cost tool for the serological diagnosis of COVID-19. In addition to being fast to execute and having the potential for automation in large-scale diagnostic studies, the biosensor fills a significant gap in existing SARS-CoV-2 detection approaches.

Streptococcus suis is an important zoonotic pathogen causing severe infections in pigs and humans. Serotyping of S. suis strains is crucial for epidemiological surveillance, outbreak investigations, and understanding the pathogenesis of this bacterium. Here, we describe a step-by-step approach that enhances a previously developed pipeline by utilizing a computational script for efficient and accurate typing of S. suis strains. The pipeline is implemented in Perl programming language and leverages the Short Read Sequence Typing for Bacterial Pathogens (SRST2) tool. It integrates various bioinformatics techniques and utilizes multiple databases, including a serotype database, cpsH confirmation database, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) database, recN species-specific gene database, and virulence gene database. These databases contain comprehensive information on S. suis serotypes, genetic markers, and virulence factors. The script can utilize paired-end or single-end fastq files as input and first confirms the species by sequence read data aligning to the recN gene, ensuring the accurate identification of S. suis strains. The pipeline next performs MLST typing and virulence factor identification using SRST2 while in a parallel processes it performs in silico serotyping of the strains. The pipeline offers a streamlined and semiautomated approach to serotyping S. suis strains, facilitating large-scale studies and reducing the manual effort required for data analysis.

RESUMO

Streptococcus suis is a swine bacterial pathogen that predominantly causes disease in weaned piglets characterized by swelling of joints, arthritis, septicemia, meningitis, and sudden death. Intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and intranasal infection models were developed to study the bacterial pathogenicity and efficacy of vaccines and various therapeutics. The selection of the appropriate infection model is a critical step in any study, as it may impact the outcomes of the study. Here we describe a method for infecting weaned piglets with S. suis using intraperitoneal route as a reliable, consistent, and reproducible animal model to evaluate vaccine protection against systemic bacterial infection.

OBJECTIVE: To establish normative data for selected ocular diagnostic tests and commensal conjunctival microflora and describe the incidence of ocular pathology in Chilean flamingos. ANIMALS STUDIED: A total of 41 Chilean flamingos were examined at the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa. PROCEDURES: In 20 flamingos, blink rate was assessed undisturbed in their exhibit, then gentle manual restraint was used to assess palpebral fissure length (PFL), aqueous tear production (phenol red thread test [PRTT] in one eye, endodontic absorbent paper point tear test [EAPPTT] in the other), intraocular pressure (IOP; rebound tonometry), and fluorescein staining. Twenty-one other flamingos were brought to a darkened area for neuro-ophthalmic examination, slit lamp biomicroscopy, and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Swabs from seven flamingos were used for ocular microbiome evaluation. RESULTS: Results are presented as mean ± standard deviation (range). Flamingos comprised 23 females/18 males, aged 11 ± 9.1 (0.7-40) years. Test results: blink rate, 3.7 ± 2 (1-9) blinks/min; PFL, 11.2 ± 1.2 (9-14) mm; IOP, 14 ± 3.2 (10-22) mmHg; EAPPT, 10.2 ± 2.8 (9-14) mm/min; PRTT, 6.8 ± 2.5 (3-13) mm/15 s. Dazzle reflex was positive in four birds examined. Pathologies included cataracts (n = 7 birds), corneal fibrosis (n = 3), endothelial pigment (n = 2), uveal cysts (n = 1), lens luxation (n = 1), and uveitis (n = 1). Ocular microbiome showed high diversity of taxa. CONCLUSIONS: Baseline ocular parameters and incidence of ophthalmic pathology assist veterinarians with disease screening for Chilean flamingos, while the ocular microbiome showed high diversity.

Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers. seeds are protein sources with health and environmental benefits. In this research, proteins with lectin activity were identified in a protein fraction from S. virgata seeds (PFLA), as well its antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials, in addition to cytotoxic effects. To obtain PFLA, seed flour was homogenized in Glycine-NaOH (100 mM; pH 9.0; NaCl 150 mM) and precipitated in ammonium sulfate. PFLA concentrates bioactive lectins (32 HU/mL, 480 HU/gFa, 18.862 HU/mgP) and essential amino acids (13.36 g/100g protein). PFLA exerts antioxidant activity, acting as a promising metal chelating agent (~77% of activity). Analyzes of cell culture assay results suggest that antioxidant activity of PFLA may be associated with the recruitment of essential molecules to prevent the metabolic impairment of cells exposed to oxidative stress. PFLA (256 - 512 µg/mL) also exhibits antifungal activity, inhibiting the growth of Aspergillus flavus, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Penicillium citrinum. Cytotoxic analysis indicates a tendency of low interference in the proliferation of 3T3 and HepG2 cells in the range of PFLA concentrations with biological activity. These findings support the notion that PFLA is a promising adjuvant to be applied in current policies on the management of metal ion chelation and fungal infections.

Objective: Streptococcus suis is a major agent of disease in modern swine operations, linked to increased mortality, treatment costs, and secondary infections. Although it is ubiquitous in swine, only a fraction of pigs develop clinical disease. The goals of this study were to profile isolates obtained from diseased pigs in western Canada and to investigate potential associations with disease severity. Procedure: Isolates of S. suis (n = 128) from 75 diagnostic submission and 63 premises were paired with epidemiological surveys completed by submitting practitioners (n = 22). Whole-genome sequencing was used to type isolates. Results: The most prevalent serotypes identified were 1/2 (7.8%, 10/128), 2 (9.3%, 12/128), 3 (9.3%, 12/128), and 7 (7.8%, 10/128); and sequence types 28 (17%, 23/128) and 839 (14%, 19/128). There was no association between serotype or sequence type and organ source or barn location. Approximately 74% (14/19) of the premises had diseased animals colonized by > 1 S. suis serotype, but only 1 pig was simultaneously infected with multiple serotypes and sequence types. Serotype distribution from diseased pigs in western Canada differed from that of those in other geographic regions. Conclusion: Infection of diseased pigs by multiple serotypes should be considered when disease control strategies are implemented. No association between S. suis type and isolation organ was identified.


Le profil moléculaire et les caractéristiques épidémiologiques de Streptococcus suis isolés de porcs malades dans l'ouest du Canada révèlent une infection à sérotypes multiples : implications pour la maitrise de la maladie. Objectif: Streptococcus suis est un agent pathogène majeur dans les exploitations porcines modernes, lié à une mortalité accrue, aux coûts de traitement et aux infections secondaires. Bien qu'elle soit omniprésente chez le porc, seule une fraction des porcs développe une maladie clinique. Les objectifs de cette étude étaient de dresser le profil des isolats obtenus à partir de porcs malades dans l'ouest du Canada et d'étudier les associations potentielles avec la gravité de la maladie. Procédure: Des isolats de S. suis (n = 128) provenant de 75 soumissions pour diagnostic et de 63 sites ont été associés à des enquêtes épidémiologiques réalisées auprès des praticiens soumettant les échantillons (n = 22). Le séquençage du génome entier a été utilisé pour typer les isolats. Résultats: Les sérotypes les plus répandus identifiés étaient 1/2 (7,8 %, 10/128), 2 (9,3 %, 12/128), 3 (9,3 %, 12/128) et 7 (7,8 %, 10/128); et les types de séquence 28 (17 %, 23/128) et 839 (14 %, 19/128). Il n'y avait aucune association entre le sérotype ou le type de séquence et la source d'organes ou l'emplacement de la ferme. Environ 74 % (14/19) des exploitations abritaient des animaux malades colonisés par > 1 sérotype de S. suis, mais 1 seul porc était infecté simultanément par plusieurs sérotypes et types de séquences. La répartition des sérotypes chez les porcs malades de l'ouest du Canada différait de celle des porcs d'autres régions géographiques. Conclusion: L'infection des porcs malades par plusieurs sérotypes doit être envisagée lors de la mise en oeuvre de stratégies de maitrise de la maladie. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sepsis poses one of the biggest public health problems, necessitating the search for new therapeutic alternatives. For centuries, propolis has been widely used in folk medicine to treat various inflammatory and infectious diseases. Given its extensive use, it has excellent potential as an adjuvant treatment for patients with sepsis. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated prophylactic treatment with standardized propolis extract (EPP-AF®) and followed the prognosis of sepsis induced by ligation and cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). METHODS: Initially, for survival assessment, Swiss mice were separated into five groups: Sham (false operated), control (PBS), ATB (received antibiotic, 8 mg/kg), P10 (received EPP-AF®, 10 mg/kg), and P100 (received EPP-AF®, 100 mg/kg). The animals received PBS, antibiotic, or EPP-AF® by the subcutaneous route 6 h before the CLP procedure. Animal survival was assessed every 12 h for five days when all of them were euthanized. RESULTS: We show that the treatment with EPP-AF® significantly increased the life expectancy of animals with sepsis compared to the control group. Interestingly, prophylactic treatment with EPP-AF® showed no effect on the number of colony-forming units in the peritoneum, blood, or lung. However, there was a decrease in cellular influx in the peritoneum. This alteration was unrelated to the number of bone marrow cells or the differential counting of peripheral blood cells. The coagulogram remained unchanged, including the number of platelets and prothrombin time-activated partial thromboplastin time. However, the inflammatory infiltrate and bleeding in the lung tissue were lower in the animals that received EPP-AF®. CONCLUSION: Thus, it was possible to conclude that prophylactic treatment with EPP-AF® preserved the lung parenchyma, resulting in an increased lifespan of mice with sepsis. It can be a helpful adjuvant in prophylactic treatment with antibiotics in presurgical conditions.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of films based on chitosan and rosemary extract on the physicochemical, microbiological, and oxidative characteristics of beef. Refrigerated steaks of Longissimus dorsi were distributed in a factorial arrangement (4 × 4) into four treatments consisting of four edible films (control; chitosan; chitosan + 4% rosemary extract; and chitosan + 8% rosemary extract) and four days of aging (0, 2, 4, and 8 days). Incorporating 4% or 8% rosemary extract into the chitosan film improved the characteristics of the films in terms of moisture absorption and elasticity. The edible coatings with chitosan and rosemary extract and the different days of aging increased the tenderness and decreased the lipid oxidation of beef. In addition, the chitosan films containing rosemary extract increased the water-holding capacity and decreased the cooking losses of beef. The films containing 4% and 8% rosemary extract decreased the development of mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria and Staphylococcus ssp. in beef. We recommend incorporating 4% rosemary extract into chitosan-based coatings to preserve the quality of refrigerated beef.

The objective of the current study was to carry out a survey of the main anatomopathological alterations in raising quails and evaluate possible interference of these in the bone tissue. To obtain the data, 23 quails were collected from farm in the central Serrana region of Espírito Santo. Necropsies with macroscopic descriptions, microbiological, coproparasitological, radiographic and histomorphometric tests were carried out. It was done data descriptive analysis and average comparision using Student T test. It was found that they presented lesions predominantly in the digestive system, followed by urinary and reproductive, and muscular system, were the altered color of the liver (47%) was the most frequent lesion. In the parasitological exams, it was found oocysts of Eimeira sp. (39.13%). In the microbiological exams, it was detected predominantly Escherichia coli (83%). Moderate osteopenia in quails, but the percentage of trabecular bone on bones was similar between healthy and diseased quails, without bone changes in histology. Microscopically, it was observed lung congestion as predominant lesion. It is concluded that there was predominance of alterations in the digestive system and mild parasitic infection; and although there was moderate level of osteopenia, there wasn't bone change as a result of the observed infections.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, dental pulp stromal cells (DPSCs) have emerged as a promising therapeutic approach for Parkinson's disease (PD), owing to their inherent neurogenic potential and the lack of neuroprotective treatments for this condition. However, uncertainties persist regarding the efficacy of these cells in an undifferentiated state versus a neuronally-induced state. This study aims to delineate the distinct therapeutic potential of uninduced and neuronally-induced DPSCs in a rodent model of PD induced by 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). METHODS: DPSCs were isolated from human teeth, characterized as mesenchymal stromal cells, and induced to neuronal differentiation. Neuronal markers were assessed before and after induction. DPSCs were transplanted into the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) of rats 7 days following the 6-OHDA lesion. In vivo tracking of the cells, evaluation of locomotor behavior, dopaminergic neuron survival, and the expression of essential proteins within the dopaminergic system were conducted 7 days postgrafting. RESULTS: Isolated DPSCs exhibited typical characteristics of mesenchymal stromal cells and maintained a normal karyotype. DPSCs consistently expressed neuronal markers, exhibiting elevated expression of ßIII-tubulin following neuronal induction. Results from the animal model showed that both DPSC types promoted substantial recovery in dopaminergic neurons, correlating with enhanced locomotion. Additionally, neuronally-induced DPSCs prevented GFAP elevation, while altering DARPP-32 phosphorylation states. Conversely, uninduced DPSCs reduced JUN levels. Both DPSC types mitigated the elevation of glycosylated DAT. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that uninduced DPSCs and neuronally-induced DPSCs exhibit potential in reducing dopaminergic neuron loss and improving locomotor behavior, but their underlying mechanisms differ.

This research aimed to determine whether triceps surae delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) affects stability while performing different postural control tasks requiring upright and landing stabilization. Twenty-four participants who self-reported as healthy were recruited. Pre and 48 h after a protocol to induce DOMS in the triceps surae, participants were evaluated for DOMS perception, pressure pain threshold, and postural control (assessed by the center of pressure, CoP) during different standing and landing stabilization tasks. We found higher DOMS perception and lower pressure pain threshold 48 h after the exercise. Mediolateral CoP displacement was more sensitive to DOMS across different postural tasks, but no effects were found for bilateral standing. The landing time to stabilization elicited high individual variability in the presence of DOMS. Effects of DOMS in the performance of less challenging tasks, such as bipedal standing, were not found. We conclude that DOMS in the triceps surae impairs mediolateral postural control during challenging tasks such as unilateral standing and body forward lean. It highlights the need for caution and individualized approaches when incorporating movements requiring frontal plane control in training and rehabilitation sessions under the presence of DOMS.

PURPOSE: Timely screening and treatment are essential for preventing diabetic retinopathy blindness. Improving screening workflows can reduce waiting times for specialist evaluation and thus enhance patient outcomes. This study assessed different screening approaches in a Brazilian public healthcare setting. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated a telemedicine-based diabetic retinopathy screening implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic and compared it with in-person strategies. The evaluation was conducted from the perspective of a specialized referral center in an urban area of Central-West Brazil. In the telemedicine approach, a trained technician would capture retinal images by using a handheld camera. These images were sent to specialists for remote evaluation. Patient variables, including age, gender, duration of diabetes diagnosis, diabetes treatment, comorbidities, and waiting time, were analyzed and compared. RESULTS: In total, 437 patients with diabetes mellitus were included in the study (mean age: 62.5 ± 11.0 years, female: 61.7%, mean diabetes duration: 15.3 ± 9.7 years, insulin users: 67.8%). In the in-person assessment group, the average waiting time between primary care referral and specialist evaluation was 292.3 ± 213.9 days, and the referral rate was 73.29%. In the telemedicine group, the average waiting time was 158.8 ± 192.4 days, and the referral rate was 29.38%. The telemedicine approach significantly reduced the waiting time (p<0.001) and significantly lowered the referral rate (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The telemedicine approach significantly reduced the waiting time for specialist evaluation in a real-world setting. Employing portable retinal cameras may address the burden of diabetic retinopathy, especially in resource-limited settings.

Green roofs are promising tools in sustainable urban planning, offering benefits such as stormwater management, energy savings, aesthetic appeal, and recreational spaces. They play a crucial role in creating sustainable and resilient cities, providing both environmental and economic advantages. Despite these benefits, concerns persist about their impact on water quality, especially for non-potable use, as conflicting results are found in the literature. This study presents a comparative analysis of the quantity and quality of water drained from an extensive green roof against an adjacent conventional rooftop made of fiber-cement tiles in subtropical Brazil. Over a 14-month period, the water drained from both roofs was evaluated based on physical (turbidity, apparent color, true color, electrical conductivity, total solids, total dissolved solids, suspended solids), chemical (pH, phosphate, total nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, chlorides, sulfates, and BOD), microbiological (total coliforms and E. coli), and metal (copper, iron, zinc, lead, and chrome) concentration parameters. The discharge from the green roof was 40% lower than its counterpart measured at the control roof, while the water quality from both roofs was quite similar. However, the green roof acted as source of chlorides, electrical conductivity, color, BOD, total hardness, E. coli, phosphate, sulfate, and turbidity. On the other side, the green roof neutralized the slightly acidic character of rainwater, showcasing its potential to mitigate the effects of acid rain. The study's results underscored that the water discharged from the green roof generally aligned with non-potable standards mandated by both Brazilian and international regulations. However, the findings emphasized the imperative need for pre-treatment of the green roof discharge before its utilization, specifically adjusting parameters like turbidity, BOD, total coliforms, and E. coli, which were identified as crucial to ensure water safety and compliance with non-potable use standards.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the thermographic pattern of regions of interest (ROI) of respiratory muscles in young asthmatics with and without bronchospasm induced by eucapnic voluntary hyperpnea (EVH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study carried out with 55 young (55% male and 45% females) aged 12.5 ± 3.3 years, divided in nine nonasthmatics, 22 asthmatics without exercise-induced bronchospasm compatible response (EIB-cr) and 24 asthmatics with EIB-cr. The diagnosis of EIB was given to subjects with a fall in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) ≥ 10% compared to baseline. Thermographic recordings of respiratory muscles were delimited in ROI of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), pectoral, and rectus abdominis intention area. Thermal captures and FEV1 were taken before and 5, 10, 15 and 30 min after EVH. RESULTS: Twenty-four (52.1%) of asthmatics had EIB-cr. There was a decrease in temperature at 10 min after EVH test in the SCM, pectoral and rectus abdominis ROIs in all groups (both with p < 0.05). There was a decrease in temperature (% basal) in asthmatic with EIB-cr compared to nonasthmatics in the rectus abdominis area (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There was a decrease in temperature in the ROIs of different muscle groups, especially in asthmatics. The greater drop in FEV1 observed in individuals with EIB-cr was initially associated with a decrease in skin temperature, with a difference between the nonasthmatics in the abdominal muscle area. It is likely that this decrease in temperature occurred due to a temporary displacement of blood flow to the most used muscle groups, with a decrease in the region of the skin evaluated in the thermography.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis results from complex interactions among humans, dogs and environment. Brazil accounts for 97% of cases in the Americas. METHODS: Twenty years (2001-2020) of the endemic disease in the state of Rio de Janeiro were studied. Incidence, lethality, sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were investigated, complemented with spatial methodologies (kernel and clusters). RESULTS: Ninety-seven human cases and 625 dogs were reported. Of the 92 cities, 22 were human endemic areas. The state had a low incidence level (0.6 per 100 000). Lethality was higher compared with the Brazilian average. More than 90% of infections occurred in urban areas. Most cases (66%) occurred in men. The predominant age groups were 0-4 y (28.7%) and 20-39 y (32.9%). Fever (89.5%), splenomegaly (83.2%) and hepatomegaly (76.8%) were the main clinical manifestations. Spatial analysis showed a displacement of the human endemic: in the first decade (2001-2010), cases were concentrated in the Metropolitan region, and in the second decade (2011-2020) in the Médio Paraíba region of the state. Most of the endemic area (56.4%) had canine infections without reported human cases. CONCLUSIONS: Disorderly urbanisation and precarious living conditions favour the transmission of the disease. Changes in the environment and migratory processes contribute to its expansion.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to analyse the global burden of disease attributable to undernutrition and high body mass index (BMI) in Brazil and its 27 states, as well as its association with the socio-demographic index (SDI) from 1990 to 2019. STUDY DESIGN: This is an epidemiological time-series study. METHODS: This study analysed the undernutrition and high BMI estimated by the Global Burden of Disease study conducted from 1990 to 2019 for Brazil and its states, using the following metrics: absolute number of deaths, standardised mortality rate, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). This study also analysed the correlation between the percentage variation of mortality rates and SDI. RESULTS: A decrease in the number of deaths (-75 %), mortality rate (-75.1 %), and DALYS (-72 %) attributable to undernutrition was found in Brazil and in all regions. As regarding the high BMI, an increase in the number of deaths was found (139.6 %); however, the mortality rate (-9.7) and DALYs (-6.4 %) declined in all regions, except in the North and Northeast regions, which showed an increase. A strong correlation was identified between undernutrition and high BMI with SDI. CONCLUSION: Our study observed a double burden of malnutrition in Brazil, with a reduction in the burden of diseases due to malnutrition in Brazil and variation in the burden due to high BMI according to the socioeconomic status of the region. Public policies are necessary in order to guarantee the human right to a healthy and sustainable diet, together with food and nutrition security and a diminishing of social inequality.
