RESUMO

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) infection causes abortions in ruminant livestock and is associated with an increased likelihood of miscarriages in women. Using sheep and human placenta explant cultures, we sought to identify tissues at the maternal-fetal interface targeted by RVFV. Sheep villi and fetal membranes were highly permissive to RVFV infection resulting in markedly higher virus titers than human cultures. Sheep cultures were most permissive to wild-type RVFV and ΔNSm infection, while live attenuated RVFV vaccines (LAVs; MP-12, ΔNSs, and ΔNSs/ΔNSm) exhibited reduced replication. The human fetal membrane restricted wild-type and LAV replication, and when infection occurred, it was prominent in the maternal-facing side. Type-I and type-III interferons were induced in human villi exposed to LAVs lacking the NSs protein. This study supports the use of sheep and human placenta explants to understand vertical transmission of RVFV in mammals and whether LAVs are attenuated at the maternal-fetal interface.

Unicellular organisms such as yeast can survive in very different environments, thanks to a polysaccharide wall that reinforces their extracellular membrane. This wall is not a static structure, as it is expected to be dynamically remodeled according to growth stage, division cycle, environmental osmotic pressure and ageing. It is therefore of great interest to study the mechanics of these organisms, but they are more difficult to study than other mammalian cells, in particular because of their small size (radius of a few microns) and their lack of an adhesion machinery. Using flat cantilevers, we perform compression experiments on single yeast cells (S. cerevisiae) on poly-L-lysine-coated grooved glass plates, in the limit of small deformation using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Thanks to a careful decomposition of force-displacement curves, we extract local scaling exponents that highlight the non-stationary characteristic of the yeast behavior upon compression. Our multi-scale nonlinear analysis of the AFM force-displacement curves provides evidence for non-stationary scaling laws. We propose to model these phenomena based on a two-component elastic system, where each layer follows a different scaling law..

Neonatology is a pediatric sub-discipline focused on providing care for newborn infants, including healthy newborns, those born prematurely, and those who present with illnesses or malformations requiring medical care. The European Training Requirements (ETR) in Neonatology provide a framework for standardized quality and recognition of equality of training throughout Europe. The latest ETR version was approved by the Union of European Medical Specialists (UEMS) in April 2021. Here, we present the curriculum of the European School of Neonatology Master of Advanced Studies (ESN MAS), which is based on the ETR in Neonatology and aims to provide a model for effective and standardized training and education in neonatal medicine. We review the history and theory that form the foundation of contemporary medical education and training, provide a literature review on best practices for medical training, pediatric training, and neonatology training specifically, including educational frameworks and evidence-based systems of evaluation. The ESN MAS Curriculum is then evaluated in light of these best practices to define its role in meeting the need for a standardized empirically supported neonatology training curriculum for physicians, and in the future for nurses, to improve the quality of neonatal care for all infants. IMPACT STATEMENT: A review of the neonatology training literature was conducted, which concluded that there is a need for standardized neonatology training across international contexts to keep pace with growth in the field and rapidly advancing technology. This article presents the European School of Neonatology Master of Advanced Studies in Neonatology, which is intended to provide a standardized training curriculum for pediatricians and nurses seeking sub-specialization in neonatology. The curriculum is evaluated in light of best practices in medical education, neonatology training, and adult learning theory.

The gut microbiome (GM) modulates body weight/composition and gastrointestinal functioning; therefore, approaches targeting resident gut microbes have attracted considerable interest. Intermittent fasting (IF) and protein pacing (P) regimens are effective in facilitating weight loss (WL) and enhancing body composition. However, the interrelationships between IF- and P-induced WL and the GM are unknown. The current randomized controlled study describes distinct fecal microbial and plasma metabolomic signatures between combined IF-P (n = 21) versus a heart-healthy, calorie-restricted (CR, n = 20) diet matched for overall energy intake in free-living human participants (women = 27; men = 14) with overweight/obesity for 8 weeks. Gut symptomatology improves and abundance of Christensenellaceae microbes and circulating cytokines and amino acid metabolites favoring fat oxidation increase with IF-P (p < 0.05), whereas metabolites associated with a longevity-related metabolic pathway increase with CR (p < 0.05). Differences indicate GM and metabolomic factors play a role in WL maintenance and body composition. This novel work provides insight into the GM and metabolomic profile of participants following an IF-P or CR diet and highlights important differences in microbial assembly associated with WL and body composition responsiveness. These data may inform future GM-focused precision nutrition recommendations using larger sample sizes of longer duration. Trial registration, March 6, 2020 (ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT04327141), based on a previous randomized intervention trial.

Calcineurin (CN), the only Ca 2+ -calmodulin activated protein phosphatase, dephosphorylates substrates within membrane-associated Ca 2+ microdomains. CN binds to substrates and regulators via short linear motifs (SLIMs), PxIxIT and LxVP. PxIxIT binding to CN is Ca 2+ independent and affects its distribution, while LxVP associates only with the active enzyme and promotes catalysis. 31 human proteins contain one or more composite 'LxVPxIxIT' motifs, whose functional properties have not been examined. Here we report studies of calcimembrin/C16orf74 (CLMB), a largely uncharacterized protein containing a composite motif that binds and directs CN to membranes. We demonstrate that CLMB associates with membranes via N-myristoylation and dynamic S-acylation and is dephosphorylated by CN on Thr44. The LxVP and PxIxIT portions of the CLMB composite sequence, together with Thr44 phosphorylation, confer high affinity PxIxIT-mediated binding to CN (KD∼8.9 nM) via an extended, 33 LxVPxIxITxx(p)T 44 sequence. This binding promotes CLMB-based targeting of CN to membranes, but also protects Thr44 from dephosphorylation. Thus, we propose that CN dephosphorylates CLMB in multimeric complexes, where one CLMB molecule recruits CN to membranes via PxIxIT binding, allowing others to engage through their LxVP motif for dephosphorylation. This unique mechanism makes dephosphorylation sensitive to CLMB:CN ratios and is supported by in vivo and in vitro analyses. CLMB overexpression is associated with poor prognoses for several cancers, suggesting that it promotes oncogenesis by shaping CN signaling.

Introduction: Optimal management of transverse sacral fractures (TSF) remains inconclusive. These injuries may present with neurological deficits including cauda equina syndrome. We present our series of laminectomy for acute TSF with cauda equina compression. Methods: This was a retrospective chart review of all patients that underwent sacral laminectomy for treatment of cauda equina compression in acute TSF at our institution between 2007 through 2023. Results: A total of 9 patients (5 male and 4 female) underwent sacral laminectomy to decompress the cauda equina in the setting of acute high impact trauma. Surgeries were done early within a mean time of 5.9 days. All but one patient had symptomatic cauda equina syndrome. In one instance surgery was applied due to significant canal stenosis present on imaging in a patient with diminished mental status not allowing proper neurological examination. Torn sacral nerve roots were repaired directly when possible. All patients regained their neurological function related to the sacral cauda equina on follow up. The rate of surgical site infection (SSI) was 33%. Conclusion: Acute early sacral laminectomy and nerve root repair as needed was effective in recovering bowel and bladder function in patients after high impact trauma and TSF with cauda equina compression. A high SSI rate may be reduced by delaying surgery past 1 week from trauma, but little data exists at this time for clear recommendations.

Novel means are needed to identify individuals and subpopulations susceptible to and afflicted by neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). This study aimed to utilize geographic distribution of heavy metal sources and sinks to investigate a potential human health risk of developing NDDs. Known or hypothesized environmental factors driving disease prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Parkinson's Disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are heavy metals, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn) and mercury (Hg). Lead (Pb) has been associated with AD and ALS. Analyzable mediums of human exposure to heavy metals (i.e., toxic metals and metalloids), or proxies thereof, include infant blood, topsoil, sewage sludge, and well water. U.S. concentrations of heavy metals in topsoil, sewage sludge, well water, and infant blood were mapped and compared to prevalence rates of major NDDs. Data from federal and state agencies (i.e., CDC, EPA, and the US Geological Survey) on heavy metal concentrations, age distribution, and NDD prevalence rates were geographically represented and statistically analyzed to quantify possible correlations. Aside from an expected significant association between NDD prevalence and age (p < 0.0001), we found significant associations between the prevalence of the sum of three major NDDs with: Pb in topsoil (p = 0.0433); Cd (p < 0.0001) and Pb (p < 0.0001) in sewage sludge; Pb in infant blood (p < 0.0001). Concentrations in sewage sludge of Cd and Pb were significantly correlated with NDD prevalence rates with an odds ratio of 2.91 (2.04, 4.225 95%CI) and 4.084 (3.14, 5.312 95%CI), respectively. The presence of toxic metals in the U.S. environment in multiple matrices, including sewage sludge, was found to be significantly associated with NDD prevalence. This is the first use of sewage sludge as an environmental proxy matrix to infer risk of developing NDDs.

Mitochondrial and thus cellular energetics are highly regulated both thermodynamically and kinetically. Cellular energetics is of prime importance in the regulation of cellular functions since it provides ATP for their accomplishment. However, cellular energetics is not only about ATP production but also about the ability to re-oxidize reduced coenzymes at a proper rate, such that the cellular redox potential remains at a level compatible with enzymatic reactions. However, this parameter is not only difficult to assess due to its dual compartmentation (mitochondrial and cytosolic) but also because it is well known that most NADH in the cells is bound to the enzymes. In this paper, we investigated the potential relevance of mitochondrial quinones redox state as a marker of mitochondrial metabolism and more particularly mitochondrial redox state. We were able to show that Q2 is an appropriate redox mediator to assess the mitochondrial quinone redox states. On isolated mitochondria, the mitochondrial quinone redox states depend on the mitochondrial substrate and the mitochondrial energetic state (phosphorylating or not phosphorylating). Last but not least, we show that the quinones redox state response allows to better understand the Krebs cycle functioning and respiratory substrates oxidation. Taken together, our results suggest that the quinones redox state is an excellent marker of mitochondrial metabolism.

One method of representing a high-rank tensor as a (hyper-)product of lower-rank tensors is the tensor hypercontraction (THC) method of Hohenstein et al. This strategy has been found to be useful for reducing the polynomial scaling of coupled-cluster methods by representation of a four-dimensional tensor of electron-repulsion integrals in terms of five two-dimensional matrices. Pierce et al. have already shown that the application of a robust form of THC to the particle-particle ladder (PPL) term reduces the cost of this term in couple-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) from O(N6) to O(N5) with negligible errors in energy with respect to the density-fitted variant. In this work, we have implemented the least-squares variant of THC (LS-THC) which does not require a nonlinear tensor factorization, including the robust form (R-LS-THC), for the calculation of the excitation and electron attachment energies using equation-of-motion coupled cluster methods EOMEE-CCSD and EOMEA-CCSD, respectively. We have benchmarked the effect of the R-LS-THC-PPL approximation on excitation energies using the comprehensive QUEST database and the accuracy of electron attachment energies using the NAB22 database. We find that errors on the order of 1 meV are achievable with a reduction in total calculation time of approximately 5 ×.

Microalgae are compelling renewable resources with applications including biofuels, bioplastics, nutrient supplements, and cosmetic products. Picochlorum celeri is an alga with high industrial interest due to exemplary outdoor areal biomass productivities in seawater. Detailed proximate analysis is needed in multiple environmental conditions to understand the dynamic biomass compositions of P. celeri, and how these compositions might be leveraged in biotechnological applications. In this study, biomass characterization of P. celeri was performed under nutrient-replete, nitrogen-restricted, and hyper-saline conditions. Nutrient-replete cultivation of P. celeri resulted in protein-rich biomass (∼50% ash-free dry weight) with smaller carbohydrate (∼12% ash-free dry weight) and lipid (∼11% ash-free dry weight) partitions. Gradual nitrogen depletion elicited a shift from proteins to carbohydrates (∼50% ash-free dry weight, day 3) as cells transitioned into the production of storage metabolites. Importantly, dilutions in nitrogen-restricted 40 parts per million (1.43 mM nitrogen) media generated high-carbohydrate (∼50% ash-free dry weight) biomass without substantially compromising biomass productivity (36 g ash-free dry weight m-2 day-1) despite decreased chlorophyll (∼2% ash-free dry weight) content. This strategy for increasing carbohydrate content allowed for the targeted production of polysaccharides, which could potentially be utilized to produce fuels, oligosaccharides, and bioplastics. Cultivation at 2X sea salts resulted in a shift towards carbohydrates from protein, with significantly increased levels of the amino acid proline, which putatively acts as an osmolyte. A detailed understanding of the biomass composition of P. celeri in nutrient-replete, nitrogen-restricted, and hyper saline conditions informs how this strain can be useful in the production of biotechnological products.

BACKGROUND: Although cesarean delivery is the most common surgery performed in the United States, prescribing practices for analgesia vary. Strategies to manage postpartum pain have mostly focused on the immediate postpartum period when patients are still admitted to the hospital. At discharge, most providers prescribe a fixed number of opioid tablets. Most patients do not use all the opioids that they are prescribed at hospital discharge. This leads to an excess of opioids in the community, which can ultimately lead to misuse and diversion. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether a transition from universal opioid prescribing to a personalized, patient-specific protocol decreases morphine milligram equivalents prescribed at hospital discharge after cesarean delivery while adequately controlling pain. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study of patients undergoing cesarean delivery before and after the implementation of a personalized opioid-prescribing practice at the time of hospital discharge. Each patient was prescribed scheduled ibuprofen and acetaminophen, with a prescription for oxycodone tablets equal to 5 times the morphine milligram equivalents used in the 24 hours before discharge, calculated via an electronic order set. The previous traditional cohorts were routinely prescribed 30 tablets of acetaminophen-codeine 300/30 mg. The primary outcome was morphine milligram equivalents prescribed at discharge. A hotline to address pain control issues after discharge was established, and calls, emergency department visits, and readmissions were examined. Statistical analyses was performed using chi-square and Wilcoxon rank-sum test, with a P value of <.05 considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Overall, 412 patients underwent cesarean delivery in the 6 weeks after initiation of the personalized prescribing protocol and were compared with 367 patients before the change. The median morphine milligram equivalents prescribed at discharge was lower with personalized prescribing (37.5 [interquartile range, 0-75] vs 135 [interquartile range, 135-135]; P<.001). Moreover, 176 patients (43%) were not prescribed opioids at discharge, which was a substantial change as all 367 patients in the traditional cohort received opioids at discharge (P<.001). Of note, 9 hotline phone calls were received; none required additional opioids after a 24-hour trial of scheduled ibuprofen, which none had taken before the call. In addition, 11 patients (2.7%) presented to the emergency department for pain evaluation, of which none required readmission or an outpatient prescription of opioids. CONCLUSION: A personalized protocol for opioid prescriptions after cesarean delivery decreased the total morphine milligram equivalents and the number of opioid tablets at discharge, without hospital readmissions or need for rescue opioid prescriptions after discharge. Opioids released into our community will be reduced by more than 90,000 tablets per year, without demonstrable adverse effect.

Forensic taphonomic studies are regionally specific and improve time since death estimates for medico-legal casework. Within forensic taphonomy and carrion ecology, vertebrate scavengers are under-researched with many studies conducted using multiple, unclothed carcasses. This is a forensically unrealistic experimental design choice with unknown impact. The effect of variation in carrion biomass on the decomposition ecosystem, particularly where vertebrate scavengers are concerned, requires clarification. To assess the effect of carrion biomass load on vertebrate scavenging and decomposition rate, seasonal baseline data for single, clothed ~60 kg porcine carcasses were compared to clothed multiple-carcass deployments, in a forensically relevant habitat of Cape Town, South Africa. Decomposition was tracked via weight loss and bloat progression and scavenging activity via motion-activated cameras. The single carcasses decayed more quickly, particularly during the cooler, wetter winter, strongly correlated with concentrated Cape gray mongoose (Galerella pulverulenta) scavenging activity. On average and across seasons, the single carcasses lost 68% of their mass by day 32 (567 accumulated degree days [ADD]), compared to 80 days (1477 ADD) for multi-carcass deployments. The single carcasses experienced substantially more scavenging activity, with longer visits by single and multiple mongooses, totaling 53 h on average compared to 20 h for the multi-carcass deployments. These differences in scavenging activity and decay rate demonstrate the impact of carrion biomass load on decomposition for forensic taphonomy research. These findings need corroboration. However, forensic realism requires consideration in taphonomic study design. Longitudinally examining many single carcasses may produce more forensically accurate, locally appropriate, and usable results.

BACKGROUND: The Pediatric Heart Transplant Society (PHTS) Registry was founded 30 years ago as a collaborative effort among like-minded providers of this novel life-saving technique for children with end-stage heart failure. In the intervening decades, the data from the Registry have provided invaluable knowledge to the field of pediatric heart transplantation. This report of the PHTS Registry provides a comprehensive look at the data, highlighting both the longevity of the registry and one unique aspect of the PHTS registry, allowing for exploration into children with single ventricle anatomy. METHODS: The PHTS database was queried from January 1, 1993 to December 31, 2019 to include pediatric (age < 18 years) patients listed for HT. For our analysis, we primarily analyzed patients by era. The early era was defined as children listed for HT from January 1, 1993 to December 31, 2004; middle era January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2009; and recent era January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019. Outcomes after listing and transplant, including mortality and morbidities, are presented as unadjusted for risk, but compared across eras. RESULTS: Since 1993, 11 995 children were listed for heart transplant and entered into the PHTS Registry with 9755 listed during the study period. The majority of listings occurred within the most recent era. Waitlist survival improved over the decades as did posttransplant survival. Other notable changes over time include fewer patients experiencing allograft rejection or infection after transplant. Waitlist and posttransplant survival have changed dramatically in patients with single ventricle physiology and significantly differ by stage of single ventricle palliation. SUMMARY: Key points from this PHTS Registry summary and focus on patients with single ventricle congenital heart disease in particular, include the changing landscape of candidates and recipients awaiting heart transplant. There is clear improvement in waitlist and transplant outcomes for children with both cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease alike.

Genotype imputation is fundamental to association studies, and yet even gold standard panels like TOPMed are limited in the populations for which they yield good imputation. Specifically, Pacific Islanders are poorly represented in extant panels. To address this, we constructed an imputation reference panel using 1,285 Samoan individuals with whole-genome sequencing, combined with 1000 Genomes (1000G) samples, to create a reference panel that better represents Pacific Islander, specifically Samoan, genetic variation. We compared this panel to 1000G and TOPMed panels based on imputed variants using genotyping array data for 1,834 Samoan participants who were not part of the panels. The 1000G + 1285 Samoan panel yielded up to 2.25-2.76 times more well-imputed (r 2 ≥ 0.80) variants than TOPMed and 1000G. There was improved imputation accuracy across the minor allele frequency (MAF) spectrum, although it was more pronounced for variants with 0.01 ≤ MAF ≤ 0.05. Imputation accuracy (r 2 ) was greater for population-specific variants (high fixation index, F ST ) and those from larger haplotypes (high LD score). The gain in imputation accuracy over TOPMed was largest for small haplotypes (low LD score), reflecting the Samoan panel's ability to capture population-specific variation not well tagged by other panels. We also augmented the 1000G reference panel with varying numbers of Samoan samples and found that panels with 48 or more Samoans included outperformed TOPMed for all variants with MAF ≥ 0.001. This study identifies variants with improved imputation using population-specific reference panels and provides a framework for constructing other population-specific reference panels.

Discrimination against and negative beliefs about large-bodied individuals, known as weight stigma, is pervasive and harmful. While previous research has focused on the negative consequences of weight stigma, the present study aims to highlight the lived experience of large-bodied individuals while also exploring the process of healing from harmful experiences of weight stigma. Ten adult (9/10 White, 8/10 cisgender women), large-bodied individuals recruited via snowball sampling through a nonprofit, grassroots, eating disorder advocacy organization participated in a 10-week, counselor-facilitated support group with the shared goal of healing from the impact of weight stigma. Researchers used reflexive thematic analysis to analyze video recordings and transcripts of group sessions to answer the following question: how did participants make sense of their weight stigma experiences and engage with the process of healing in community? Four primary themes were generated: (a) Community is Essential, (b) Storying, (c) Deprogramming and Changing Mindset, and (d) Expansive Healing. These results underscore the impact of weight stigma in the lives of large-bodied individuals and provide insight into how clinicians might support such individuals engaging in collective healing from these painful experiences. High cellular pigment levels in dense microalgal cultures contribute to excess light absorption. To improve photosynthetic yields in the marine microalga Picochlorum celeri, CAS9 gene editing was used to target the molecular chaperone cpSRP43. Depigmented strains (>50% lower chlorophyll) were generated, with proteomics showing attenuated levels of most light harvesting complex (LHC) proteins. Gene editing generated two types of cpSRP43 transformants with distinct lower pigment phenotypes: (i) a transformant (Δsrp43) with both cpSRP43 diploid alleles modified to encode non-functional polypeptides and (ii) a transformant (STR30309) with a 3 nt in-frame insertion in one allele at the CAS9 cut site (non-functional second allele), leading to expression of a modified cpSRP43. STR30309 has more chlorophyll than Δsrp43 but substantially less than wild type. To further decrease light absorption by photosystem I in STR30309, CAS9 editing was used to stack in disruptions of both LHCA6 and LHCA7 to generate STR30843, which has higher (5-24%) productivities relative to wild type in solar-simulating bioreactors. Maximal productivities required frequent partial harvests throughout the day. For STR30843, exemplary diel bioreactor yields of ~50 g m-2 day-1 were attained. Our results demonstrate diel productivity gains in P. celeri by lowering pigment levels.

Community-based organizations (CBOs) are on the frontlines offering resources and support to residents during times of distress. Through a community-academic partnership, an interdisciplinary team developed, collected, and analyzed 91 surveys from social services providers across New York City assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their organizations' operations. The majority (93%) of these organizations stayed open during the pandemic but had to shift the services they offered to meet new needs. Although most (89%) shared they were not offering on-site testing for COVID-19, 53% expressed interest in becoming a test site, citing needs such as funding, test kits, and skills-building for staff. More than half of the respondents were eager to get involved in public health efforts in other ways, such as joining local research advisory boards. Despite increasing the services they provided, CBOs saw decreases in staffing and volunteers. Furthermore, although nearly half (48%) received governmental aid, many faced financial pressures and several had to close offices during the pandemic. As trusted resources, CBOs can help meet public health needs if provided with proper support and resources. It is critical that those working in prevention and relief are considerate about how and when they leverage effective partnerships between public health organizations and CBOs, offering organizations the resources they need to be effective in this charge, given the role they can have in promoting health equity.

A recent outbreak of the mpox virus (MPXV) occurred in non-endemic regions of the world beginning in May 2022. Pathogen surveillance systems faced pressure to quickly establish response protocols, offering an opportunity to employ wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) for population-level monitoring. The pilot study reported herein aimed to: (i) develop a reliable protocol for MPXV DNA detection in wastewater which would reduce false negative reporting, (ii) test this protocol on wastewater from various regions across the United States, and (iii) conduct a state of the science review of the current literature reporting on experimental methods for MPXV detection using WBE. Twenty-four-hour composite samples of untreated municipal wastewater were collected from the states of New Jersey, Georgia, Illinois, Texas, Arizona, and Washington beginning July 3rd, 2022 through October 16th, 2022 (n = 60). Samples underwent vacuum filtration, DNA extraction from captured solids, MPXV DNA pre-amplification, and qPCR analysis. Of the 60 samples analyzed, a total of eight (13%) tested positive for MPXV in the states of Washington, Texas, New Jersey, and Illinois. The presence of clade IIb MPXV DNA in these samples was confirmed via Sanger sequencing and integration of pre-amplification prior to qPCR decreased the rate of false negative detections by 87% as compared to qPCR analysis alone. Wastewater-derived detections of MPXV were compared to clinical datasets, with 50% of detections occurring as clinical cases were increasing/peaking and 50% occurring as clinical cases waned. Results from the literature review (n = 9 studies) revealed successful strategies for the detection of MPXV DNA in wastewater, however also emphasized a need for further method optimization and standardization. Overall, this work highlights the use of pre-amplification prior to qPCR detection as a means to capture the presence of MPXV DNA in community wastewater and offers guidance for monitoring low-titer pathogens via WBE.

Wastewater-based testing (WBT) for SARS-CoV-2 has rapidly expanded over the past three years due to its ability to provide a comprehensive measurement of disease prevalence independent of clinical testing. The development and simultaneous application of WBT measured biomarkers for research activities and for the pursuit of public health goals, both areas with well-established ethical frameworks. Currently, WBT practitioners do not employ a standardized ethical review process, introducing the potential for adverse outcomes for WBT professionals and community members. To address this deficiency, an interdisciplinary workshop developed a framework for a structured ethical review of WBT. The workshop employed a consensus approach to create this framework as a set of 11 questions derived from primarily public health guidance. This study retrospectively applied these questions to SARS-CoV-2 monitoring programs covering the emergent phase of the pandemic (3/2020-2/2022 (n = 53)). Of note, 43% of answers highlight a lack of reported information to assess. Therefore, a systematic framework would at a minimum structure the communication of ethical considerations for applications of WBT. Consistent application of an ethical review will also assist in developing a practice of updating approaches and techniques to reflect the concerns held by both those practicing and those being monitored by WBT supported programs.
