RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is scant data on the association of the Pulsed wave-Doppler tissue imaging (PW-DTI)-derived tricuspid lateral annular peak systolic velocity (S') and poor short-term prognosis of patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total number of 732 participants from the Heb-ADHF registry in China were divided into three groups according to the corresponding status of tricuspid S'. Demographic characteristics, comorbidities, physical examinations, lab tests, and medications were compared among the different groups. Different logistic regression models were utilized to gauge the relationship between S' and the risk of a composite of short-term all-cause mortality or 30-day heart failure (HF)-related rehospitalization. RESULTS: The number of composite outcome events identified in the study population was 85, with the short-term all-cause death coupled with 30-day HF readmission events reaching 23 and 62, respectively. As per the multivariable adjusted analysis, S' was inversely related to the risk of a composite outcome [<10 cm/s odds ratios (OR) 2.90, 95% confidence interval (CI):1.33-6.31; 10-11 cm/s OR 2.18, 95% CI: 1.10-4.33; p for trend = 0.006] in comparison with S' at >11 cm/s. When S' was analysed as a continuous variable, per 1 cm/s increase, the OR (95% CI) for a composite outcome was [0.87 (0.77-0.99), p = 0.028]. Area under curve (AUC) of S' for predicting outcome of ADHF was 0.631 (95%CI: 0.573-0.690, p < 0.01). Significant inverse association was also observed in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≥40% subgroup. CONCLUSIONS: Inspite of the potential confounders, a more impaired tricuspid annular peak systolic velocity is associated with a poorer short-term prognosis of patients with ADHF.

This is the first comprehensive evaluation of tricuspid annular systolic velocity among patients with ADHF.Tricuspid annular systolic velocity could be a predictor of poor short-term prognosis in ADHF.Tricuspid annular systolic velocity should be considered in patients with ADHF at admission.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: The viability of periodontal ligament cells on the root surface is a major factor that influences the healing of replanted teeth. A suitable storage medium is necessary to preserve avulsed teeth before replantation. Conditioned medium from placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PMSC-CM) contains a variety of growth factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of PMSC-CM as a storage medium to maintain the cell viability of avulsed teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Extracted premolars from healthy humans were randomly stored in Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) and PMSC-CM for 6, 12 and 24 hours, respectively, at room temperature, and then the ratio of apoptosis of the periodontal ligament (PDL) cells was identified by flow cytometry. Human periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) were incubated with HBSS and PMSC-CM, respectively, for 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours in 5% CO2 at 37°C. Then, the cell viability of PDLSCs was determined using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and a cell cycle assay was performed. RESULTS: The apoptosis rate of PDL cells in PMSC-CM was significantly lower than that in HBSS at 24 hours (P < .001), while the two groups showed similar cell apoptosis rates at 6 and 12 hours (P > .05). The cell proliferation of PDLSCs treated with PMSC-CM significantly increased compared with the HBSS group (P < .05). The cell cycle assay revealed that the PDLSCs treated with HBSS were arrested at the G1 phase, while there was no difference between the PMSC-CM group and the control group (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with HBSS, PMSC-CM showed better inhibition of apoptosis of PDL cells and promoted the proliferation of PDLSCs. Thus, PMSC-CM could be a promising storage medium for avulsed teeth.

RESUMO

Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. is a traditional medical plant in Asia; however, it is still unknown whether Eucommia male flowers have an antihypertensive activity. In this study, we found that the aqueous extract of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. male flowers can lower the blood pressure of SHR in a dose-dependent manner. Mechanistic studies suggested that the aqueous extract of male flowers can promote the mRNA and protein expressions of ACE2 in the kidney of SHR. ELISA assay showed that the plasma levels of ANG II was decreased, while ANG-(1-7) was increased in SHR treated with the aqueous extract of male flowers. ACE2 inhibitor DX600 can reverse the aqueous extract of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. male flower-induced downregulation of Ang II and upregulation of Ang-(1-7), as well as the reduction of blood pressure in SHR. Moreover, Ang-(1-7)-Mas receptor antagonist A-779 abolished the antihypertensive effects of the aqueous extract of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. male flower in SHR. The aqueous extract of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. male flowers exhibited an antihypertensive action through the activation of ACE2-Ang-(1-7)-Mas signaling pathways in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) for immature permanent tooth, better treatment results could be obtained by applying platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as the scaffold rather than the blood clot. The goal of this study was to compare the histologic differences between using PRP and blood clot in RET. METHODS: Three 6-month-old beagles each carrying 9 premolars with double root canals were randomly assigned to the PRP group, blood clot group, or negative control group. All experimental teeth suffered apical periodontitis, and RET was performed. In the blood clot group, bleeding was induced from the periapical tissues to fill the canal space. In the PRP group, autologous PRP was injected into each root canal. The animals were sacrificed 3 months later. Histologic sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Statistical analysis was performed by the Fisher exact test, with the significance set at 0.05. RESULTS: With the ingrowth of cellular cementumlike tissues, the canal wall was thickened, and the apical apex was closed in both the PRP and blood clot groups. Cementocytelike cells were present in the newly formed tissues. Meanwhile, no statistical difference was found in both experimental groups for the average percentage of apical closure, new tissue formation, and pulplike tissue formation. Noticeably, a large number of inflammatory cells were present in some root canals in both groups although the postoperative radiograph revealed the disappearance of periapical radiolucency. CONCLUSIONS: PRP application could be an option for clinical cases in which little or no bleeding were found when irritating the apical tissue during RET.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of QT dispersion (QTd) and ST/heart rate slope (ST/HRs) at the end of ECG exercise test plus ST-segment depression on diagnosing restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: Between November 2001 and December 2003, 129 patients underwent PCI successfully, and they were examined 3-6 months later. At the end of treadmill exercise, QTd and ST/HRs were measured. All patients also accepted coronary angiography to ascertain whether he/she had restenosis. The results of QTd and ST/HRs plus ST-segment depression were then evaluated. RESULTS: The sensitivity and specificity of QTd and ST/HRs plus ST-segment depression were 84.6% and 80.4% respectively. Both of them were significantly higher than conventional ST-segment depression standard (sensitivity was 53.3% and specificity was 66.7%, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Measuring QTd and ST/HRs at the end of ECG treadmill exercise test plus ST-segment depression can be used for the diagnosis of restenosis after PCI.
