OBJECTIVES: To investigate the mechanism of the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on improving liver injury in cisplatin (DDP) induced liver injury model mice by observing the changes of inositol-requiring enzyme (IRE) -1 signaling pathway. METHODS: Forty KM mice were randomly divided into control, model, acupuncture and moxibustion groups, with 10 mice in each group. The liver injury model was replicated by intraperitoneal injection of DDP (10 mg/kg). In the acupuncture group and the moxibustion group, acupuncture and moxibustion were performed at "Dazhui"(GV14), and bilateral "Ganshu"(BL18), "Shenshu" (BL23), and "Zusanli"(ST36), respectively for 6 min, once per day for 7 d. The apoptosis of hepatocytes was detected by TUNEL staining. The expression of phosphorylation(p)-IRE-1α, glucose-regulated protein (Grp) 78 and cysteine aspartic protease (Caspase) -12 in liver tissue were detected by immunohistochemistry and Western blot, respectively. The expression levels of Grp78 and Caspase-12 mRNA in liver tissue were detected by quantitative real-time PCR. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the apoptosis rate of hepatocytes was increased (P<0.05), the positive expression and protein expression of p-IRE-1α, Grp78, and Caspase-12 were increased (P<0.05), the expression levels of Grp78 and Caspase-12 mRNA were increased (P<0.05) in the model group. Compared with the model group, all these indicators showed opposite trends (P<0.05) in the acupuncture and moxibustion groups. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture and moxibustion can reduce liver injury due to DDP chemotherapy by modulating IRE-1 signaling pathway, inhibiting the excessive activation of endoplasmic reticulum stress, and reducing liver cell apoptosis.

Microorganisms living in soil maintain intricate interactions among themselves, forming the soil microbiota that influences the rhizosphere microbiome and plant growth. However, the mechanisms underlying the soil microbial interactions remain unclear. Streptomyces and Mesorhizobium are commonly found in soil and serve as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Here, we identified an unprecedented interaction between the colonies of red-soil-derived Streptomyces sp. FXJ1.4098 and Mesorhizobium sp. BAC0120 and referred to it as "proximity-based defensive mutualism (PBDM)." We found that metabolite-mediated iron competition and sharing between the two microorganisms were responsible for PBDM. Streptomyces sp. FXJ1.4098 produced a highly diffusible siderophore, desferrioxamine, which made iron unavailable to co-cultured Mesorhizobium sp. BAC0120, thereby inhibiting its growth. Streptomyces sp. FXJ1.4098 also released poorly diffusible iron-porphyrin complexes, which could be utilized by Mesorhizobium sp. BAC0120, thereby restoring the growth of nearby Mesorhizobium sp. BAC0120. Furthermore, in ternary interactions, the PBDM strategy contributed to the protection of Mesorhizobium sp. BAC0120 close to Streptomyces sp. FXJ1.4098 from other microbial competitors, resulting in the coexistence of these two PGPR. A scale-up pairwise interaction screening suggested that the PBDM strategy may be common between Mesorhizobium and red-soil-derived Streptomyces. These results demonstrate the key role of iron in complex microbial interactions and provide novel insights into the coexistence of PGPR in soil.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) may benefit from acupuncture as a therapeutic. However, the findings of systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) are inconsistent and their quality needs to be evaluated critically. We aimed to provide an overview of the methodological quality, risk of bias, quality of reporting, and quality of evidence for SRs/MAs of acupuncture for BCRL. METHODS: Publications were retrieved from four Chinese databases and four English databases. The methodological quality, risk of bias, reporting quality, and evidence quality of the included SRs/MAs were assessed by two independent researchers using the A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2), Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews (ROBIS), Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE), respectively. RESULTS: There were a total of 8 SRs/MAs included. By AMSTAR-2, all SRs/MAs were graded as having low or very low methodological quality. By ROBIS, all SRs/MAs in phase 1, domain 1, and domain 4 of phase 2 were at low risk, while in domain 2 were at high risk. By PRISMA, reporting weaknesses in protocol and registration, as well as search method, were identified. By GRADE, the level of evidence quality was "low" to "very low", and the most commonly downgraded factor was the risk of bias. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture may be beneficial in improving BCRL. However, due to the identified limitations and conflicting findings, further more prescriptive and rigorous SRs/MAs are required to give strong evidence for final judgments.

Actinobacteria produce a variety of secondary metabolites that can influence the survival or behaviour of other organisms. The understanding of the ecological roles of actinobacteria has significantly improved in the past decades, but a systematic insight into the interactions between actinobacteria and other microbes in nature is warranted. Here, we studied the pairwise effects of actinobacteria on other microbes isolated from red soils under different nutritional conditions. We found that neutral effects dominated the interactions, accounting for 68.1% of the interactions in eutrophic conditions and for a significantly higher proportion (86.2%) in oligotrophic conditions. High nutrient levels boosted active metabolism of actinobacteria and generally made them more aggressive, supporting the stress gradient hypothesis. The secondary metabolites produced by actinobacteria played a pivotal role in interference competition with other microbes, of which the role of desferrioxamine siderophores could not be ignored. Niche overlap seemed to be another cause of competition, notably under oligotrophic conditions. Moreover, the large-scale phylogeny had a much greater impact on the interaction than the location origin of the microbes. These results provide an understanding of the coexistence of actinobacteria with other microbes in nature and suggest neutrality as a key mechanism for maintaining microbial diversity in soils.

We demonstrated a high-power ultralong-wavelength Tm-doped silica fiber laser operating at 2153 nm with the output power exceeding 18 W and the slope efficiency of 25.5%. A random distributed feedback fiber laser with the center wavelength of 1173 nm was employed as pump source of Tm-doped fiber laser for the first time. No amplified spontaneous emissions or parasitic oscillations were observed when the maximum output power reached, which indicates that employing 1173 nm random distributed feedback fiber laser as pump laser is a feasible and promising scheme to achieve high-power emission of long-wavelength Tm-doped fiber laser. The output power of this Tm-doped fiber laser could be further improved by optimizing the length of active fiber, reflectivity of FBGs, increasing optical efficiency of pump laser and using better temperature management. We also compared the operation of 2153 nm Tm-doped fiber lasers pumped with 793 nm laser diodes, and the maximum output powers were limited to ~2 W by strong amplified spontaneous emission and parasitic oscillation in the range of 1900-2000 nm.

We propose a novel high power random fiber laser (RFL) based on tapered fiber. It can overcome the power scaling limitation of RFL while maintaining good beam quality to a certain extent. An output power of 26.5 W has been achieved in a half-open cavity with one kilometer long tapered fiber whose core diameter gradually changes from 8 µm to 20 µm. The steady-state light propagation equations have been modified by taking into account the effective core area to demonstrate the tapered RFL through numerical calculations. The numerical model effectively describes the power characteristics of the tapered fiber based RFL, and both the calculating and experimental results show higher power exporting potential compared with the conventional single mode RFL.

We report the result of achieving a random fiber laser (RFL) with record 200-W-level power output. The highest output power is realized by a simple 120 m long cavity at a working wavelength of 1173 nm while pumping at 1120 nm. The maximum observed optical-to-optical efficiency reaches ∼89%, which is believed to be the highest value ever reported for RFLs. In addition, numerical calculations on different order Raman Stokes wave thresholds based on the theoretical model are carried out for comparison with the experimental data. The presented work effectively advances the power scalability, and the numerical model well describes the lasing thresholds in such short cavity RFLs.

In this Letter, we demonstrate a kilowatt (kW) level high-power fiber laser amplifier with a clear sign of spectral-broadening-free property. The high-power fiber lasing is realized by employing a master oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) configuration, seeded by a temporally stable random fiber laser (RFL) that utilizes Raman amplification and random distributed feedback from a long passive fiber. The output power reaches 1.03 kW with a 1070 nm wavelength and an optical-to-optical efficiency of 74.6%. Despite the typical nonlinear spectral broadening in most traditional MOPA systems, the output spectral linewidth is well maintained during the whole high-power amplification process. The suppressed linewidth broadening in the spectral domain during high-power amplification is significant for further power scaling, spectral beam combination, and other applications that require narrow-linewidth high-power lasing.

RESUMO

Two kinds of hundred-watt-level random distributed feedback Raman fiber have been demonstrated. The optical efficiency can reach to as high as 84.8%. The reported power and efficiency of the random laser is the highest one as we know. We have also demonstrated that the developed random laser can be further used to pump a Ho-doped fiber laser for mid-infrared laser generation. Finally, 23 W 2050 nm laser is achieved. The presented laser can obtain high power output efficiently and conveniently and opens a new direction for high power laser sources at designed wavelength.

RESUMO

A tunable random distributed feedback (RDFB) fiber laser operating at 1 µm is presented, which consists of a piece of ytterbium-doped fiber, a manual tunable filter and a 1-km-long single-mode fiber that provides RDFB. The wavelength of the RDFB fiber laser can be tuned continuously from 1040 to 1090 nm with a linewidth of about 0.4 nm. Power output maintains good flatness in the 50 nm tuning range, with fluctuations within 1 dB. It is the first reported tunable RDFB fiber laser working at 1 µm as far as we know.
