RESUMO

As the third active gas signal molecule in plants, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays important roles in physiological metabolisms and biological process of fruits and vegetables during postharvest storage. In the present study, the effects of H2S on enhancing resistance against soft rot caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea and the involvement of jasmonic acid (JA) signaling pathway in kiwifruit during the storage were investigated. The results showed that 20 µL L-1 H2S fumigation restrained the disease incidence of B. dothidea-inoculated kiwifruit during storage, and delayed the decrease of firmness and the increase of soluble solids (SSC) content. H2S treatment increased the transcription levels of genes related to JA biosynthesis (AcLOX3, AcAOS, AcAOC2, and AcOPR) and signaling pathway (AcCOI1, AcJAZ5, AcMYC2, and AcERF1), as well as the JA accumulation. Meanwhile, H2S promoted the expression of defense-related genes (AcPPO, AcSOD, AcGLU, AcCHI, AcAPX, and AcCAT). Correlation analysis revealed that JA content was positively correlated with the expression levels of JA biosynthesis and defense-related genes. Overall, the results indicated that H2S could promote the increase of endogenous JA content and expression of defense-related genes by regulating the transcription levels of JA pathway-related genes, which contributed to the inhibition on the soft rot occurrence of kiwifruit.

Background: Chronic fatigue is a predominant symptom of post COVID-19 condition, or long COVID. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) for fatigue post COVID-19 infection. Methods: Ten English and Chinese language databases and grey literature were searched up to 12 April 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Cochrane "Risk of bias" (RoB) tool was applied. Evidence certainty was assessed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Effect estimates were presented as risk ratio (RR) or mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Thirteen RCTs with 1632 participants were included. One RCT showed that Bufei Huoxue herbal capsules reduced fatigue (n=129, MD -14.90, 95%CI -24.53 to -5.27), one RCT reported that Ludangshen herbal liquid lowered fatigue (n=184, MD -1.90, 95%CI -2.38 to -1.42), and the other one RCT shown that fatigue disappearance rate was higher with Ludangshen herbal liquid (n=184, RR 4.19, 95%CI 2.06 to 8.53). Compared to traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation (TCM-rahab) alone, one RCT showed that fatigue symptoms were lower following Qingjin Yiqi granules plus TCM-rehab (n=388, MD -0.48, 95%CI -0.50 to -0.46). Due to concerns with RoB and/or imprecision, the certainty in this evidence was low to very low. No serious adverse events was reported. Conclusions: Limited evidence suggests that various TCIM interventions might reduce post COVID-19 fatigue. Larger, high quality RCTs of longer duration are required to confirm these preliminary findings. Study Registration: The protocol of this review has been registered at PROSPERO: CRD42022384136.

To investigate the instent restenosis rate of sirolimus-coated stents in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and risk factors for in-stent restenosis, patients with unstable angina (UA) caused by coronary artery stenosis were enrolled, and all clinical and imaging data were analyzed. Among 143 enrolled patients with UA aged 35-83 (mean 60.9 ± 10.0) years enrolled, there were 114 (79.7%) male and 29 (20.3%) female patients. Arterial stenosis was present in one coronary artery in 6 (4.2%) patients, in two coronary arteries in 20 (14.0%) patients, in three arteries in 116 (81.1%), and in four coronary arteries in 1 (0.7%) patient. Stenting was successfully performed in all (100%) patients, and 181 stents were deployed. The quantitative flow ratio (QFR) was 0.92 ± 0.03 (range 0.84-0.96) immediately after stenting, and the TIMI was grade 3 in all patients. The diameter of the stents deployed ranged 2.25-4 mm (mean 3.04 ± 0.44) with a length ranging 10 mm to 104 mm (mean 32.73 ± 15.5). Follow-up angiography was performed in all patients with a duration of 1-92 (mean 15.0 ± 18.8) months. Instent restenosis ≥ 50% occurred in 25 (17.5%) patients. In univariate logistic regression analysis, significant (P < 0.05) risk factors for instent restenosis ≥ 50% were QFR (OR 0.036, 95% CI 0.13-0.97), stent diameter (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.18-0.92), hypertension (OR 3.16, 95% CI 1.02-9.82), smoking (OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.11-0.89), and neutrophil count (OR 2.22, 95% CI 1.10-5.44). In multivariate analysis, QFR (OR 0.02, 95% CI 0.002-0.19), stent diameter (OR 0.06, 95% CI 0.005-0.59), hypertension (OR 6.75, 95% CI 1.83-35.72) and neutrophil count (OR 276.07, 95% CI 12.32-10,959.95) were significant (P < 0.05) independent risk factors for instent restenosis ≥ 50%. In conclusion, certain instent restenosis rates occurs after the sirolimus-eluted coronary stent deployment for the treatment of coronary artery stenosis in patients with UA, and quantitative flow ratio after stenting, stent diameter, hypertension, and neutrophil count are significant risk factors for instent restenosis of the sirolimus-coated stents in coronary intervention.

Chiral materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have garnered significant attention owing to their distinctive luminescent properties and wide array of applications. CPL enables the selective emission of left and right circularly polarized light. The fluorescence quantum yield and dissymmetry factor play pivotal roles in the generation of CPL. Helical polymers exhibit immense promise as CPL materials due to their inherent chirality, structural versatility, modifiability, and capacity to incorporate diverse chromophores. This Review provides a brief review of the synthesis of CPL materials based on helical polymers. The CPL can be realized by aggregation-induced CPL of non-emissive helical polymers, and helices bearing chromophores on the pendants and on the chain end. Furthermore, future challenges and potential applications of CPL materials are summarized and discussed.

RESUMO

Optical microcavities have the ability to confine photons in small mode volumes for long periods of time, greatly enhancing light-matter interactions, and have become one of the research hotspots in international academia. In recent years, sensing applications in complex environments have inspired the development of multimode optical microcavity sensors. These multimode sensors can be used not only for multi-parameter detection but also to improve measurement precision. In this review, we introduce multimode sensing methods based on optical microcavities and present an overview of the multimode single/multi-parameter optical microcavities sensors. Expected further research activities are also put forward.

Cyclic polymers have very unique structure and properties, and thus have drawn intense research attention. However, controlled synthesis of cyclic polymers with predictable molar mass and narrow distribution is still a challenging task. In this study, we developed a novel cyclic catalyst that initiates the ring-expansion polymerisation of isocyanides, producing a series of cyclic helical polymers with predictable molecular weight and low dispersity. Interestingly, the ring-expansion polymerization of the isocyanide macromonomers gives well-defined cyclic bottlebrush polymers. The cyclic topology was demonstrated using transmission electron microscopy.

We propose a dual-parameter sensor for the simultaneous detection of temperature and pressure based on a single packaged microbubble resonator (PMBR). The ultrahigh-quality (∼107) PMBR sensor exhibits long-term stability with the maximum wavelength shift about 0.2056 pm. Here, two resonant modes with different sensing performance are selected to implement the parallel detection of temperature and pressure. The temperature and pressure sensitivities of resonant Mode-1 are -10.59 pm/°C and 0.1059 pm/kPa, while the sensitivities of Mode-2 are -7.69 pm/°C and 0.1250 pm/kPa, respectively. By adopting a sensing matrix, the two parameters are precisely decoupled and the root mean square error of measurement are ∼ 0.12 °C and ∼ 6.48 kPa, respectively. This work promises the potential for the multi-parameters sensing in a single optical device.

Aims: To investigate the effects of multimedia health education on psychological burden, quality of life, and self-efficacy of patients with congenital microtia. Materials and Methods: Eighty cases of patients with congenital microtia treated and cared for in our hospital from June 2018 to June 2022 were selected according to the numerical table method as retrospective study subjects and divided into 40 cases each in the comparison group and the observation group. The comparison group implemented conventional health education and discharge instruction, and the observation group implemented multimedia health education care to compare the effects of self-efficacy, self-care ability and psychological burden of patients in the two groups. Results: Before care, the two groups had no statistically significant difference in the quality of life scores (P > 0.05). Aftercare, the mental vitality scores, social interaction scores, emotional limitation scores, and mental status of patients in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the comparison group (P < 0.05). Before nursing care, there was no statistically significant difference in the nursing ability and anxiety-depression scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). After nursing care, the health knowledge level, self-care skills, self-care responsibility, and self-concept of the observation group were higher than the comparison group, while the depression-emotional disorder scores were significantly lower than the comparison group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Routine health education and discharge instruction combined with multimedia health education care can effectively improve the quality of life of patients with congenital microtia, reduce adverse emotions, and improve patients' sense of self-efficacy.

Plants are sessile organisms suffering severe environmental conditions. Drought stress is one of the major environmental issues that affect plant growth and productivity. Although complex regulatory gene networks of plants under drought stress have been analyzed extensively, the response mechanism in the early stage of drought stress is still rarely mentioned. Here, we performed transcriptome analyses on cotton samples treated for a short time (10 min, 30 min, 60 min, 180 min) using 10% PEG, which is used to simulate drought stress. The analysis of differently expressed genes (DEGs) showed that the number of DEGs in roots was obviously more than that in stems and leaves at the four time points and maintained >2000 FDEGs (DEGs appearing for the first time) from 10 min, indicating that root tissues of plants respond to drought stress quickly and continuously strongly. Gene ontology (GO) analysis showed that DEGs in roots were mainly enriched in protein modification and microtubule-based process. DEGs were found significantly enriched in phosphatidylinositol signaling system at 10 min through Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, implying the great importance of phosphatidylinositol signal in the early stage of drought stress. What was more, two co-expression modules, which were significantly positively correlated with drought stress, were found by Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA). From one of the co-expression modules, we identified a hub-gene Gohir.A07G058200, which is annotated as "phosphatidylinositol 3- and 4-kinase" in phosphatidylinositol signaling system, and found this gene may interact with auxin-responsive protein. This result suggested that Gohir.A07G058200 may be involved in the crosstalk of phosphatidylinositol signal and auxin signal in the early stage of drought stress. In summary, through transcriptome sequencing, we found that phosphatidylinositol signaling system is an important signal transduction pathway in early stage in response to drought stress, and it may interact with auxin signal transduction through phosphatidylinositol 3- and 4-kinase.

Botryosphaeria dothidea is a major pathogen responsible for postharvest kiwifruit soft rot. This study aimed to determine the influence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on postharvest resistance to kiwifruit soft rot and the antifungal role of H2S against B. dothidea. The results indicated that H2S (20 µl L-1) restricted the lesion area following inoculation with B. dothidea. H2S enhanced the production of shikimic acid, tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine while also increasing the total phenols, flavonoids, and lignin. H2S upregulated the expression of AcDHQS, AcSDH, AcSK, AcPAL, AcCAD, and AcCHS. Additionally, sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS)-released H2S inhibited mycelial growth. NaHS concentrations of 20 and 40 mmol L-1 significantly decreased the mycelial weight and malondialdehyde content (MDA) content while increasing cell membrane conductivity and membrane leakage. The results indicate that H2S induces resistance in kiwifruit via a microbicidal role and amino acid metabolism involved in postharvest kiwifruit disease resistance.

Exploring the facile synthesis of Pb-free energetic metal-organic frameworks (EMOFs) with both high nitrogen content and high thermostability is a significant but challenging task in the field of MOF-based green energetic materials. Herein, a new EMOF, [Zn2(atz)3(N3)]n (atz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole), has been synthesized by simply using a commercial ligand (atz) under mild conditions. A probable mechanism for the formation of azide groups in the product has been proposed, in which the fraction of C-N and N-N bonds in atz is the key. The X-ray single crystal structure analysis reveals the EMOF's unique graphene-like and azide-group-bridged 2D bilayer structure with gourd-type micropores. More impressively, the EMOF shows a high nitrogen content of 59.33% and superior thermostability of up to 362 °C, both among the best of existing EMOFs. In addition, detonation property calculations and sensitivity tests have been carried out, which demonstrate its high-energy and low-sensitivity features. Moreover, [Zn2(atz)3(N3)]n shows the ability to accelerate the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20), making it a potential combustion promoter for green and insensitive propellants.

Many state-of-the-art researches focus on predicting infection scale or threshold in infectious diseases or rumor and give the vaccination strategies correspondingly. In these works, most of them assume that the infection probability and initially infected individuals are known at the very beginning. Generally, infectious diseases or rumor has been spreading for some time when it is noticed. How to predict which individuals will be infected in the future only by knowing the current snapshot becomes a key issue in infectious diseases or rumor control. In this report, a prediction model based on snapshot is presented to predict the potentially infected individuals in the future, not just the macro scale of infection. Experimental results on synthetic and real networks demonstrate that the infected individuals predicted by the model have good consistency with the actual infected ones based on simulations.

Optical microcavities have become an attractive platform for precision measurement with merits of ultrahigh sensitivity, miniature footprint and fast response. Despite the achievements of ultrasensitive detection, optical microcavities still face significant challenges in the measurement of biochemical and physical processes with complex dynamics, especially when multiple effects are present. Here we demonstrate operando monitoring of the transition dynamics of a phase-change material via a self-referencing optofluidic microcavity. We use a pair of cavity modes to precisely decouple the refractive index and temperature information of the analyte during the phase-transition process. Through real-time measurements, we reveal the detailed hysteresis behaviors of refractive index during the irreversible phase transitions between hydrophilic and hydrophobic states. We further extract the phase-transition threshold by analyzing the steady-state refractive index change at various power levels. Our technology could be further extended to other materials and provide great opportunities for exploring on-demand dynamic biochemical processes.

Critical nodes in temporal networks play more significant role than other nodes on the structure and function of networks. The research on identifying critical nodes in temporal networks has attracted much attention since the real-world systems can be illustrated more accurately by temporal networks than static networks. Considering the topological information of networks, the algorithm MLI based on network embedding and machine learning are proposed in this paper. we convert the critical node identification problem in temporal networks into regression problem by the algorithm. The effectiveness of proposed methods is evaluated by SIR model and compared with well-known existing metrics such as temporal versions of betweenness, closeness, k-shell, degree deviation and dynamics-sensitive centralities in one synthetic and five real temporal networks. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperform these well-known methods in identifying critical nodes under spreading dynamic.

The ability to detect nanoscale objects is particular crucial for a wide range of applications, such as environmental protection, early-stage disease diagnosis and drug discovery. Photonic crystal nanobeam cavity (PCNC) sensors have attracted great attention due to high-quality factors and small-mode volumes (Q/V) and good on-chip integrability with optical waveguides/circuits. In this review, we focus on nanoscale optical sensing based on PCNC sensors, including ultrahigh figure of merit (FOM) sensing, single nanoparticle trapping, label-free molecule detection and an integrated sensor array for multiplexed sensing. We believe that the PCNC sensors featuring ultracompact footprint, high monolithic integration capability, fast response and ultrahigh sensitivity sensing ability, etc., will provide a promising platform for further developing lab-on-a-chip devices for biosensing and other functionalities.

Synchronization of material resorption and new bone formation is vital to achieve harmonious bone regeneration in the treatment of large bone defects. To exposit the resorption/osteogenesis properties in the guided bone repairing, rhBMP-2-loaded trimodal macro/micro/nano-porous bioactive glass scaffolds (TMS-rhBMP-2) were set as substrate model. We penetratingly investigated the particular function of hierarchical structure and incorporated rhBMP-2 in the resorption/osteogenesis, and dissected the cellular interplay throughout the regenerative procedure. The results suggested that rhBMP-2 significantly facilitated osteoclastogenesis-mediated scaffold degradation and strikingly up-regulated mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-involved osteogenesis in vitro. Further gene microarray and related proteins expression indicated that in the presence of rhBMP-2, MSCs rather than differentiated MSCs could exert synergistic effects on osteoclastogenesis, osteoclasts maturation and resorptive function; meanwhile, rhBMP-2-induced MSCs osteogenesis was also strengthened by the osteoclasts. In vivo micro-CT, X-ray, kinetic and histological analyses qualitatively and quantitively demonstrated the optimized coupling of bioresorption/osteogenesis and the most rapid regeneration in TMS-rhBMP-2. Consequently, with rhBMP-2 acted as ignitor and MSCs/osteoclasts interaction as booster, a harmonious bone regeneration was obtained. Besides, long-term magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in virtue of Gd3+ suggested that the degradation products mainly distributed in liver and spleen, verifying the accumulation/discharge profiles and safety application of TMS-rhBMP-2 system in vivo. This study will not merely provide guidance for the design of clinical bone repairing materials, but shed substantial light on the multicell-mediated tissue regeneration.

Numerous well-known processes of complex systems such as spreading and cascading are mainly affected by a small number of critical nodes. Identifying influential nodes that lead to broad spreading in complex networks is of great theoretical and practical importance. Since the identification of vital nodes is closely related to propagation dynamics, a novel method DynamicRank that employs the probability model to measure the ranking scores of nodes is suggested. The influence of a node can be denoted by the sum of probability scores of its i order neighboring nodes. This simple yet effective method provides a new idea to understand the identification of vital nodes in propagation dynamics. Experimental studies on both Susceptible-Infected-Recovered and Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible models in real networks demonstrate that it outperforms existing methods such as Coreness, H-index, LocalRank, Betweenness, and Spreading Probability in terms of the Kendall τ coefficient. The linear time complexity enables it to be applied to real large-scale networks with tens of thousands of nodes and edges in a short time.

Complexes of gadolinium(iii) have proven to be especially effective magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. One essential strategy to achieve more sensitive small-molecule gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents is to increase the hydration number q in order to improve the relaxivity. In this work, a series of diethylenetriamine-N-oxide pentaacetic acid-bisamide-based Gd(iii) complexes with 3 coordinated water molecules have been synthesized, in which the hydration numbers are verified by luminescence measurements. Relaxivities of all the complexes are about triple of those commercial MRI contrast agents, ranging from 12.5 to 18.8 mM-1 s-1 (1.5 T; 25 °C). The formation constants of the Gd(iii) complexes were calculated from potentiometric titration data at 25 °C using the HYPERQUAD program, which demonstrate superior stability over the commercial MRI contrast agent Gd-DTPA-BMA (Omniscan®). The kinetic inertness of the complexes was also higher than Omniscan® and comparable to another commercial MRI contrast agent Gd-DTPA (Magnevist®). Meanwhile, the viability of HeLa cells remained unaffected after the exposure to the complexes. The efficacy of these complexes as potential positive contrast agents in MRI was further evaluated using in vivo studies, and the complexes were found to exhibit superb positive contrast.

Initiation of endogenous repair mechanisms, including key steps of stem cell recruitment and cartilage intermediate formation in endochondral ossification, is vital to regeneration of large bone defects. To biomimetically promote a rapid initiation and ensuing osteogenic stimulation, exogenous chemokine IL-8 and growth factor BMP-2 were orchestrated in a mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG)-based spatiotemporal delivery system, to achieve a rapid release of IL-8 followed by a long-term sustained release of BMP-2. The synergistic effect of IL-8 and BMP-2 on initiation stage of bone healing and underlying mechanism were thoroughly investigated in vitro and in vivo. Intriguingly, apart from its superiority in stem cell recruitment to BMP-2, IL-8 not only endowed a histological "prep-state" of endochondral ossification by up-regulating chondrogenic genes and inducing the formation of extensive cartilage tissues, facilitating rapid bone transformation by BMP-2, but also triggered a cellular "prep-state" with high expression of BMP receptors, enhancing the osteoinductivity of BMP-2. With the spatiotemporal delivery system, orchestrated signal stimuli of IL-8 and BMP-2 induced a rapid initiation including efficient stem cell recruitment and a "chondrogenic/osteogenic balance" at the first stage of endochondral ossification, and the scaffold facilitated sufficient osteoconductivity, together resulting in early extensive bone mineralization and an advanced regeneration throughout the repair of large bone defect. We believe this new idea could provide insights toward designing bone-repairing biomaterials with higher regenerative efficiency.
