RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs, plastic items from 1 µm to 5 mm in size) are present in all environmental compartments. The evaluation of their concentration, fate, and spatial distribution is still a challenge for the scientific community. This concern is just debuting in developing countries, (i.e., Asia, South America, and Africa). This study deals with the MP contamination in the abiotic marine compartments of Northern Vietnam: seawater and intertidal sediments. Four sites located in the intertidal zone or near the coastline in Tonkin Bay, Vietnam were studied. A total of 16 samples (eight for each compartment) were collected in July 2020 (rainy season) and January 2021 (dry season). Anthropogenic particles (total observed fibers and fragments) were found at levels ranging from 3 to 303 particles/m3 in seawater and from 63 to 955 particles/kg dry weight in sediments. Most of these were fibers less than 300-µm long. Higher levels of seawater at the Nam Dinh site were found in the rainy season compared to the dry one. As the river flow was estimated six times higher during the rainy season than during the dry season, these results suggest the river discharge is a potential source of contamination for the coastal zone. The temporal variability was lower for the sediments than for the seawater, suggesting the long-term integration of the anthropogenic particles in this compartment. A small portion of sorted particles were analyzed by µFTIR (8.35%), and this sub-sample was only composed of fragments. Still, fragments were mostly composed of polypropylene (PP, 82%), polyethylene (PE, 9%), and polystyrene (PS, 9%). The fragment size was similar in the two studied compartments, but it was dependent on polymer types since PS fragments (140 ± 17 µm) were smaller than those made of PE (622 ± 123 µm) and PP (869 ± 905 µm). Future works should investigate the smallest fraction of MP (even nanoplastics) as well as find solutions in order to mitigate MP contamination in the marine environment.

RESUMO

Urban rivers are significantly impacted by anthropogenic pressure. This study presents the updated assessment of the concentrations of 11 metals and other variables (pH, total organic carbon (TOC) and nutrients (total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total silica)) in the sediments of four urban rivers in inner Hanoi city, Vietnam, during the period 2020-2022. The mean concentrations of Fe, Zn, As, and Cr were higher than the permissible values of the Vietnam National technical regulation on the surface sediment quality. Moreover, Zn and Cr were at the severe effect level of the US EPA guidelines for sediment quality. The calculation of pollution indices (Igeo and EF) demonstrated that Mn, Ni, and Fe were from natural sources whereas other metals were from both anthropogenic and natural sources. The ecological risk index revealed that metals in Hanoi riverine sediments were classified at considerable ecological risk. High values of metals, TOC, and nutrients in the sediments of these urban rivers mostly originate from the accumulation of untreated urban wastewater that is enhanced by low river discharge. Our results may provide scientific base for better management decisions to ensure environmental protection and sustainable development of Hanoi city.

RESUMO

Introduction: Patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have been widely used as disease models to test new therapeutic strategies. Moreover, the regenerative potential of stem cells can be improved with the use of biologically active compounds. Our study was designed to explore the effect of honokiol, a small polyphenol molecule extracted from Magnolia officinalis, on the survival and culture time of iPSC-derived neurons from a sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) patient. This study aimed to generate iPSCs from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of an AD patient using episomal plasmids with a nucleofector system and differentiate them into neurons. These iPSC-derived neurons were used to investigate the effect of honokiol extracted from M. officinalis on their survival and long-term cultures. Methods: IPSCs were generated from PBMCs of an AD patient by introducing Oct-3/4, Sox2, Klf4, L-Myc, and Lin28 using NucleofectorTM Technology. Differentiation of neurons derived from iPSCs was carried out using inducers and recognized by biomarkers. The viability of iPSC-derived neurons with the addition of honokiol extracted from the bark of M. officinalis was determined by the MTT analytical kit. Results: IPSCs were generated by reprogramming AD patient-derived PBMCs and subsequently converted into neurons. The survival and growth of iPSC-derived neurons were significantly enhanced by adding honokiol in the experiment conditions. Conclusion: AD iPSC-derived neurons had a high viability rate when cultured in the presence of honokiol. These results have shown that AD iPSC-derived neurons can be an excellent model for screening neurotrophic agents and improving the conditions for long-term cultures of human iPSC-derived neurons. Honokiol proves to be a potential candidate for cellular therapeutics against neurodegenerative disorders.

RESUMO

Asthma is an inflammatory disease characterized by chronic inflammation in lung tissues and excessive mucus production. High-fat diets have long been assumed to be a potential risk factor for asthma. However, to date, very few direct evidence indicating the involvement of high sucrose intake (HSI) in asthma progression exists. In this study, we investigate the effect of HSI on ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized allergic asthma mice. We observed that HSI increased the expression of inflammatory genes (IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α) in adipose tissues and led to reactive oxygen species generation in the liver and lung. In addition, HSI accelerated the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway leading to MMP9 activation, which promotes the chemokines and TGF-ß secretion in the lungs of OVA-sensitized allergic asthma mice. More importantly, HSI significantly promoted the pathogenic Th2 and Th17 responses. The increase of IL-17A secretion by HSI increased the expression of chemokines (MCP-1, CXCL1, CXCL5, CXCL8). It resulted in eosinophil and mast cell infiltration in the lung and trachea. We also demonstrated that HSI increased mucus hypersecretion, which was validated by increased main mucin protein (MUC5AC) secreted in the lungs. Our findings suggest that HSI exacerbates the development of Th2/Th17-predominant asthma by upregulating the TLR4-mediated NF-κB pathway, leading to excessive MMP9 production.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding has many benefits for mothers, children, and the environment over both the short and longr-term. Prenatal intention to breastfeed is a powerful predictor of short-term breastfeeding outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze breastfeeding intentions, including the intention to feed infants with breastmilk only and to continue exclusive breastfeeding to 6 months among pregnant mothers in Hanoi, Vietnam. METHODS: The analysis included 1230 singleton mothers, between 24- and 36-weeks' gestation, who attended antenatal clinics in two hospitals in Hanoi in 2020. RESULTS: The proportion of mothers with an "breastfeeding intention" (i.e., intention to feed an infant with breastmilk only) and "exclusive breastfeeding intention" to 6 months was 59.9% and 41.7%, respectively. Mothers who were 25 years or older (aOR = 1.35, 95%CI:1.00-1.81), had an undergraduate educational degree or higher (aOR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.08-1.76), had observed another woman breastfeeding (aOR = 1.43, 95%CI: 1.03-2.00), were not living with parents-in-law (aOR = 1.34, CI: 1.05-1.70), and were multiparous (aOR = 1.60, 95%CI: 1.16-2.19) had higher odds of "exclusive breastfeeding intention" to 6 months. Among primiparous women, those who thought their husbands support breastfeeding were more likely to intend to feed an infant with breastmilk only. Among multiparous women, feeding the previous child with breastmilk exclusively before the introduction of complementary foods and not giving solid foods together with water until 6 months, were significant predictors for both breastfeeding intentions. CONCLUSION: Mothers without exclusive breastfeeding experience should be provided with greater support to promote exclusive breastfeeding intention and outcomes.

RESUMO

Microplastic (MP) pollution is an emerging problem in many areas around the world and in coastal areas of Vietnam, requiring more studies dedicated to the accumulation of this pollutant in the food chain as well as its potential risk to human health. This study investigated MP levels in tissues of five common bivalve species collected from aquaculture areas along the coast of Vietnam. MPs were found in all bivalve samples, with average values of 10.84 ± 2.61 items/individual or 2.40 ± 1.34 items/g wet weight. Impacts of feeding habits of bivalves showed influences on MP abundance in the samples. Fibers were the dominant shape of MPs recorded, most of which accumulated in the gills and digestive glands of all bivalve samples, with the majority falling within the size range of 300-2000 µm. MPs found in all studied species had relatively similar chemical compositions, mainly composed of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). In this study, a diverse diet consisting of different bivalve species and detailed data on the consumption rate of these species were used to assess the human health risk of MPs dedicated to the coastal communities of Vietnam. The results suggested a significant part of MP uptake by human could be via bivalve consumption, in which removing viscera and proper depuration should be applied prior to eating, thereby reducing the risk.

RESUMO

Although sediments are considered to be a major sink for microplastics (MP), there is still a relative lack of knowledge on the factors that influence the occurrence and abundance of MP in riverine sediments. The present study investigated the occurrence and distribution of MP in riverine sediments collected at twelve sites representative of different populated and urbanized rivers (To Lich, Nhue and Day Rivers) located in the Red River Delta (RRD, Vietnam, during dry and rainy seasons. MP concentrations ranged from 1600 items kg-1 dw to 94,300 items kg-1dw. Fiber shape dominated and MP were made of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) predominantly. An absence of seasonal effect was observed for both fragments and fibers for each rivers. Decreasing MP concentrations trend was evidenced from the To Lich River, to the Nhue River and to the Day River, coupled with a decreasing fiber length and an increasing fragment area in the surface sediment from upstream to downstream. Content of organic matter was correlated to MP concentrations suggesting that, high levels of organic matter could be MP hotspots in urban rivers. Also, high population density as well as in highly residential areas are related to higher MP concentrations in sediments. Finally, a MP high ecological risk (RI: 866 to 4711) was calculated in the RDD.

RESUMO

Contamination of aquaculture products by pathogenic organisms is a major concern in areas where this activity is of high economic importance. The abundances of total coliforms (TC), Escherichia coli (EC) and faecal streptococci (FS) (in CFU.100 mL-1) in seawater in the Red River coastal aquaculture zone were determined. The results showed TC numbers (200 to 9100; average 1822), EC (<100 to 3400; average 469) and FS (<100 to 2100; average 384), of which TC exceeded the allowable threshold of the Vietnam regulation for coastal aquaculture water. TC and EC numbers in 4 wastewater types (domestic, livestock farming sewage, agricultural runoff, and mixed sewage canals) were investigated and revealed the importance of point sources of faecal contamination in seawater. These results underline the need to reduce the release of untreated wastewater and to put into place seawater microbial quality monitoring in areas where the development of sustainable aquaculture is an objective.

RESUMO

This paper provides a historical overview regarding the emergence, development and deepening of divergences between the European Union (EU) and the People's Republic of China (China) in reducing global aviation emissions. It focuses on their divergences on three specific issues, i.e. under which framework to tackle global aviation emissions, whether and how to reflect the Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC) principle in the design and implementation of the global market-based measures (MBMs) for international aviation and which role the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) should play in offsetting these emissions. Besides, this paper explains the driving forces behind these divergences by examining both normative and economic-related factors, which have formed different stances of both sides. From a Chinese perspective, considerations about the issues of state sovereignty, fairness regarding burden sharing in tackling climate change, the development of China's aviation and aircraft manufacturing and its limited capability in promoting the large-scale SAF deployment help explain its hardline stance on reducing global aviation emissions. As for the EU, perceptions of its leading role in the global climate governance and the CBDR-RC principle, the targets of strengthening the EU ETS role in the global carbon market, and the competitiveness of the European airlines are underlying reasons behind its attempt to include the international aviation under its ETS. Moreover, the EU member states' support to the ICAO can be explained through the conformity between the emissions offsetting objectives under this organisation and the EU's current climate policies.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of the cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) with comorbidity index as a predictor of overall survival (OS) and non-relapse mortality (NRM) in patients with hematological malignancies who undergo allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive adult patients with hematological malignancies who underwent HLA-matched donor-HSCT at Chungnam National University Hospital (Daejeon, South Korea) between January 2014 and December 2020. Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) was classified using the recommendations of the Mayo Clinic database. RESULTS: Of 72 patients, 38 (52.8%) had VO2max values lower than the 25th percentile (VO2max ≤ 25th) of an age- and sex-matched normal population. Patients with VO2max ≤ 25th had no significant differences both OS and NRM (30 month OS 29.8% vs 41%, P = .328; and 30 month NRM 16% vs 3.3%, P = .222), compared with other patients. VO2max ≤ 25th was assigned a weight of 1 when added to the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation-specific Comorbidity Index (HCT-CI) to form a composite comorbidity/CPET index (HCT-CI/CPET). Patients with HCT-CI/CPET scores of 0 to 1 demonstrated significantly better OS and NRM than did patients with HCT-CI/CPET scores ≥2 [median OS not reached vs 6 months, P < .001 and 30 month NRM 7.4% vs 33.3%, P = .006]. An HCT-CI/CPET score ≥2 was the only adverse risk factor for NRM on multivariate analysis [hazard ratio (HR) of NRM 10.36 (95% CI 1.486-2.25, P = .018)]. CONCLUSION: The composite HCT-CI/CPET score can predict the survival and mortality of patients with hematological malignancies who undergo allogeneic HSCT.

RESUMO

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by skin barrier dysfunction. Sargassum horneri (S. horneri) is a brown alga that has been widely used in traditional medicine of eastern Asian countries. Recent studies proved that a brown alga S. horneri has anti-inflammatory activity. In this study, we investigated the effect of S. horneri ethanol extract (SHE) against AD in 2,4-dinitrobenzene (DNCB) induced AD in NC/Nga mice. We observed that SHE treatment decreased the epidermal thickness and epidermal hyperplasia that had been worsened through DNCB application. Moreover, SHE significantly inhibited the proliferation of mast cells and decreased the expression of IL-13 on CD4⁺ cells prompted by elevated thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) expression in DNCB-induced AD in mice. We also demonstrated that SHE directly inhibited the expression of keratinocyte-produced TSLP known to exacerbate skin barrier impairment. Especially, the decrease of filaggrin, an integral component of proper skin barrier function through a function in aggregating keratin filaments, observed in DNCB-induced AD mice was significantly improved when treated with SHE. More importantly, we proved that SHE was able to decrease the serum levels of IgG1 and IgG2ₐ, two crucial factors of AD, indicating the protective effect of SHE. Taken together, our findings suggest that SHE may protect NC/Nga mice against DNCB-induced AD via promoting skin barrier function.

RESUMO

Coastal aquaculture contributes significantly to the local economy of many countries however water quality issues in the coastal regions are threatening the sustainability of this economic activity. This paper presents the analysis of seven heavy metals (HM) in surface seawater and wastewater from the Red River coastal aquaculture zone during 2019-2020. HM concentrations (µg.L-1) from 72 seawater samples were: Zn: 60.76 (0.5-188.0); Cu: 26.91 (0.10-96.0); Pb: 7.27 (0.8-31.2); Cr: 6.71 (0.6-28.4); As: 1.38 (0.15-5.78); Cd: 0.44 (0.04-2.41); and Hg: 0.34 (0.02-1.39). All mean values of HM in seawater were lower than the Vietnam regulatory limits for aquaculture seawater although high individual HM concentrations were found in some isolated seawater samples. Concerning wastewater quality, only mean As concentration was higher than the Vietnam regulatory limit for surface water quality, despite the fact that high concentrations of other individual HM were observed. The PCA analysis on the entire dataset of seawater and wastewater samples revealed that HM concentrations in seawater originate from various sources including human activities and natural conditions. The total potential ecological risk index (averaging 18.6; from 7.48 to 39.05) for the Red River coastal zone is in the low range. These results provide a scientific basis for better management of the coastal environment which is important for the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry in this area.

RESUMO

Health risks and perceptions of residents living nearby landfills or stone mines/quarries have been well documented; however, the multiple impacts of these two pollution sources have yet to be investigated. This study aims at giving insights into the impacts of residents exposed to two pollution sources in Danang city, Vietnam: Khanh Son landfill and Phuoc Tuong quarry. In this cross-sectional study, 7-point-Likert scale questionnaires were used to collect information from 314 respondents which were divided into three groups: i) Landfill-Stone mine (LS) exposed group within 1 km from both sources, ii) Stone mine (ST) exposed group within 1 km from the stone mine, and iii) the far-exposed group about 2-3 km from the two emission sites. Air pollutants (including H2S, CH4, and total suspended particles (TSP)) and noise levels were also sampled. In addition, we estimated the potential health risk assessment due to the exposure to hydrogen sulphide in the study areas. The findings have shown that 1) There is a statistical difference (p-value < 0.001) between the two exposed groups and far-exposed group regarding health risks and residents' perceptions; 2) Compared to the ST exposed group, the LS exposed group statistically showed a higher perception to bad odours and skin diseases; lower satisfaction with regards to the personal health condition and the operation of the landfill; and higher willingness to change current living locations; and 3) There is evidence to indicate that elevated concentrations of air pollutants are associated with the high self-reported health risks and residents' perceptions. Urgent actions should be focused on the LS exposed group, landfill and quarry operations to prevent further adverse health effects.

RESUMO

Pollution status and distribution characteristics of ten typical phthalic acid esters (PAEs) were investigated in 36 sediment samples collected from three rivers in Northern Vietnam from June to October 2020. The total concentrations of PAEs in sediment samples collected from the To Lich River (n = 9), the Nhue River (n = 12), and the Day River (n = 15) were in ranges of 11,000-125,000 ng/g-dwt (mean/median: 50,000/42,200 ng/g-dwt), 2140-89,900 ng/g-dwt (mean/median: 29,300/20,700 ng/g-dwt), and 1140-43,100 ng/g-dwt (mean/median: 13,800/10,400 ng/g-dwt), respectively. Among ten PAEs studied, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was found at the highest levels in all samples meanwhile dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), and dipropyl phthalate (DPP) were detected at low frequency and concentration. Significant correlations have existed between the median-chain (C4-C7) PAE pairs in sediment samples. Due to the high accumulation in the sediments, the median-chain PAEs had a higher ecological risk than the short-chain (C1-C3) PAEs. These contaminants may present a longstanding influence on organisms and ecosystems.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) are small (< 5 mm) plastic particles that are widely found in marine, freshwater, terrestrial and atmospheric environments. Due to their prevalence and persistence, MPs are considered an emerging contaminant of environmental concern. The separation and quantitation of MPs from freshwater sediments is a challenging and critical issue. It is necessary to identify the fate and sources of MPs in the environment, minimise their release and adverse effects. Compared to marine sediments, standardised methods for extracting and estimating the amount of MPs in freshwater sediments are relatively limited. The present study focuses on MP recovery efficiency of four commonly used salt solutions (NaCl, NaI, CaCl2 and ZnCl2) for isolating MPs during the density separation step from freshwater sediment. Known combinations of artificial MP particles (PS, PE, PVC, PET, PP and HDPE) were spiked into standard river sediment. Extraction using NaI, ZnCl2 and NaCl solutions resulted in higher recovery rates from 37 to 97% compared to the CaCl2 solution (28-83%) and varied between polymer types. Low-density MPs (PE, HDPE, PP and PS) were more effectively recovered (> 87%) than the denser polymers (PET and PVC: 37 to 88.8%) using NaCl, NaI and ZnCl2 solutions. However, the effective flotation of ZnCl2 and NaI solutions is relatively expensive and unsafe to the environment, especially in the context of developing countries. Therefore, considering the efficiency, cost and environmental criteria, NaCl solution was selected. The protocol was then tested by extracting MPs from nine riverine sediment samples from the Red River Delta. Sediments collected from urban rivers were highly polluted by MPs (26,000 MPs items·kg-1 DW) compared to sediments located downstream. Using a NaCl solution was found to be effective in this case study and might also be used in long-term and large-scale MP monitoring programmes in Vietnam.

RESUMO

In this report, four cVMSs including hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) were determined in 85 sediment samples collected from three rivers in northern Vietnam during the period from May to November 2020. Total mean concentrations of cVMSs ranged from 75.4 to 15,000 ng/g-dw. The highest levels of cVMS were found in sediment samples collected from the To Lich River (range, 260-15,000 ng/g-dw; median, 2840 ng/g-dw), followed by the Nhue River (range, 188-6800 ng/g-dw; median, 1370 ng/g-dw), and the Day River (range, 75.4-4600 ng/g-dw; median, 666 ng/g-dw). Among cVMSs, decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) was found at the highest levels in all samples and ranged from 9.00 to 11,000 ng/g-dw. Significant correlations exist between the concentrations of D4/D6 and D5/D6 pairs in river sediment samples. Although the calculated ecological risk was not high, the presence of cVMSs in the sediment raises concerns about the impact on aquatic life because of their long-term accumulation capacity.

RESUMO

The present study evaluated the anti-obesity effect of sulforaphane (SFN) and glucoraphanin (GRN) in broccoli leaf extract (BLE) on 3T3-L1 adipocytes and ob/ob mice. Based on Oil Red O staining and triglyceride (TG) assay, SFN and BLE significantly reduced (P<.05) both lipid accumulation and TG content in the differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes. SFN and BLE increased 2-NBDG uptake by 3T3-L1 adipocytes in a dose-dependent manner. Western blot analysis confirmed that SFN and BLE increased the phosphorylation levels of both AMPK (Thr172) and ACC (Ser79), and reduced the expression of HMGCR in liver and white adipose tissues of ob/ob mice. Histological analysis revealed that SFN and BLE ameliorated hepatic steatosis, and reduced the size of adipocyte in ob/ob mice. Treatment with SFN and BLE significantly reduced (P<.05) TG content, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, total cholesterol (TC), and glucose in the serum of ob/ob mice. RNA sequencing analysis showed that up- or down-regulation of 32 genes related to lipid metabolism was restored to control level in both SFN and BLE-treated ob/ob mice groups. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed via STRING analysis, and Srebf2, Pla2g2c, Elovl5, Plb1, Ctp1a, Lipin1, Fgfr1, and Plcg1 were located in the functional hubs of the PPI network of lipid metabolism. Overall results suggest that the SFN content in BLE exerts a potential anti-obesity effect by normalizing the expression of genes related to lipid metabolism, which are up- or down-regulated in ob/ob mice.

RESUMO

Plastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems, including microplastics (MPs) smaller than 5 mm, has become an emerging global concern. Asia is considered a "hot spot" for plastic pollution due to rapid economic and demographic growth, together with rapid urbanization. Here, we provide an overview of the current knowledge on MP abundance, sources, fate, and transfer in Asian freshwater ecosystems based on publications from January 2014 to May 2021. MP contamination in freshwater compartments, including water, sediment, and biota, was found to vary strongly. In water, it ranged from 0.004 items m-3 in a moderately urbanized region to more than 500,000 items m-3 in a dumping river in a highly populated watershed. In the sediment, MP abundance ranged from 1 to more than 30,000 items kg-1 dry weight. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) were predominant in both water and sediment compartments. MP was detected in biota samples from all the studied species, but their abundance depended on the locations and species studied. Overall, MP characteristics (form, size, color, and polymer type) depended on sources and natural constraints (mainly hydrodynamics). This study also revealed that MP in Asian freshwater ecosystems mainly originated from domestic wastewater/runoff, followed by industrial emissions, fisheries and aquaculture wastewater. Plastic waste is not efficiently recycled or incinerated in Asia, leading to MP transfer and accumulation in the aquatic environment, and, more importantly, to ingestion by low to high trophic level organisms. This work highlights several knowledge gaps to guides future research to improve MP pollution management for the sustainable development of highly populated regions such as Asia.

RESUMO

In this study, samples were collected from the Java Sea coasts, from the South China Sea in Hainan Island coasts and Quang Yên region and Rú Chá mangrove near Hue in Central Vietnam. In studied samples a total of eight Luticola species have been observed. Three of the taxa studied are described herein as species new to science - Luticolaorientalis sp. nov., L.cribriareolata sp. nov. and L.halongiana sp. nov. Under light microscopy (LM) L.orientalis sp. nov. and L.cribriareolata sp. nov. are similar with rhombic-lanceolate to rhombic/ elliptic-lanceolate to elliptic valve shapes and narrowly rounded apices. Both species can be easily distinguished by stria density (higher density in L.orientalis). Under SEML.cribriareolata is characterized by cribrate areola occlusions, a character thus far observed only in three established species. The remaining species of the whole genus known thus far are characterized by hymenate areola. Similar morphology Luticola species have been observed from tropical mangrove forests from Madagascar but they all can be easily distinguished based on the lack of grooves in the central area. The third species - L.halongiana sp. nov. has rhombic-elliptic to rhombic-lanceolate valves with broadly rounded to slightly protracted apices in larger specimens. This species has a relatively broad central area. Also unique among brackish-water Luticola is the small, rounded stigma positioned almost midway between the valve center and valve margin. In the habitats from which the new species are described we also identified five established Luticola taxa including, L.belawanensis, L.celebesica, L.inserata, L.seposita and L.tropica. For those species we provide detailed SEM characteristics of valve ultrastructure, as well as the range of environmental conditions and geographic distribution within the study area.
