RESUMO

Cosmic ray muons are massive, charged particles created from high energy cosmic rays colliding with atomic nuclei in Earth's atmosphere. Because of their high momenta and weak interaction, these muons can penetrate through large thicknesses of dense material before being absorbed, making them ideal for nondestructive imaging of objects composed of high-Z elements. A Giant Muon Tracker with two horizontal 8 × 6 in.2 and two vertical 6 × 6 in.2 modules of drift tubes was used to measure muon tracks passing through samples placed inside the detector volume. The experimental results were used to validate a Monte Carlo simulation of the Giant Muon Tracker. The imaging results of simulated samples were reconstructed and compared with those from the experiment, which showed excellent agreement.

RESUMO

We report on the nuclear dependence of transverse single-spin asymmetries (TSSAs) in the production of positively charged hadrons in polarized p^{↑}+p, p^{↑}+Al, and p^{↑}+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The measurements have been performed at forward rapidity (1.4<η<2.4) over the range of transverse momentum (1.8

RESUMO

The dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence Cathedral, was built between 1420 and 1436 by architect Filippo Brunelleschi and it is now cracking under its own weight. Engineering efforts are under way to model the dome's structure and reinforce it against further deterioration. According to some scholars, Brunelleschi might have built reinforcement structures into the dome itself; however, the only known reinforcement is a wood chain 7.75 m above the springing of the Cupola. Multiple scattering muon radiography is a non-destructive imaging method that can be used to image the interior of the dome's wall and therefore ascertain the layout and status of any iron substructure in it. A demonstration measurement was performed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory on a mock-up wall to show the feasibility of the work proposed, and a lightweight and modular imaging system is currently under construction. We will discuss here the results of the demonstration measurement and the potential of the proposed technique, describe the imaging system under construction and outline the plans for the measurement. This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue 'Cosmic-ray muography'.

RESUMO

Consumer imaging sensors (CIS) are examined for real-time charged-particle detection and CR-39 plastic detector replacement. Removing cover glass from CIS is hard if not impossible, in particular for the latest inexpensive webcam models. We show that $10-class CIS are sensitive to MeV and higher energy protons and α-particles by using a 90Sr ß-source with its cover glass in place. Indirect, real-time, high-resolution detection is also feasible when combining CIS with a ZnS:Ag phosphor screen and optics. Noise reduction in CIS is nevertheless important for the indirect approach.

RESUMO

A total of 1442 patients who had major gynaecological surgery were recruited into three multicentre studies using a standard general anaesthetic technique in order to assess the efficacy of various doses of orally administered ondansetron in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. A total of 1257 patients were included in this analysis: 420 received oral formulations of placebo and 212, 296 and 329 received ondansetron 1, 8 and 16 mg, respectively. The following factors were measured in these studies and were considered to have a possible influence on the proportion of patients experiencing postoperative nausea and vomiting: age of patient; volatile anaesthetic; intraoperative dose of fentanyl; postoperative dose of morphine; country; anaesthesia duration; neuromuscular blocker; neuromuscular block antagonist; premedicant; recovery time; type of surgery; antiemetic treatment; body weight. Using a process of elimination based on logistic regression techniques, the factors found to be the most important influences on the frequencies of nausea and vomiting were antiemetic treatment, type of surgery, neuromuscular blocker, country, volatile anaesthetic and age. A statistically significant interaction between type of surgery and age was observed. Adjusted probabilities of nausea and vomiting were obtained from the model, including all the above factors, together with the type of surgery by age interaction. Ondansetron 8 mg showed the smallest adjusted probability of nausea (0.54) and vomiting (0.34) and placebo the greatest (nausea 0.75, vomiting 0.61). A similar pattern of adjusted probabilities over neuromuscular blocking agents was seen for nausea and vomiting, with the greatest occurring in patients receiving pancuronium (nausea 0.74, vomiting 0.57) and the least in patients receiving alcuronium (nausea 0.59, vomiting 0.38).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

Twenty-four healthy subjects completed a double-blind, placebo controlled, parallel group study to evaluate the effect of treatment with flunarizine on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of sumatriptan, a 5HT1-like agonist. Subjects received a single oral 200 mg dose of sumatriptan on the eighth day of a once daily treatment with either flunarizine 10 mg or matching placebo. There were no significant differences between treatments in relation to Cmax (82.3 ng ml-1 in the absence and 81.4 ng ml-1 in the presence of flunarizine), AUC (368 ng ml-1 h in the absence and 360 ng ml-1 in the presence) and elimination half-life (2.2 h in the absence and 2.4 h in the presence of flunarizine) of sumatriptan. Similarly pretreatment with flunarizine was not found to have any clinically significant effect on the pharmacodynamics of sumatriptan as measured by pulse rate, blood pressure and ECG.
