BACKGROUND: Increasing fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease risk in observational studies but with little evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The impact of concurrent pharmacological therapy is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To pool data from six RCTs to examine the effect of increasing FV intake on blood pressure (BP) and lipid profile, also exploring whether effects differed by medication use. DESIGN: Across trials, dietary intake was assessed by diet diaries or histories, lipids by routine biochemical methods and BP by automated monitors. Linear regression provided an estimate of the change in lipid profile or BP associated with a one portion increase in self-reported daily FV intake, with interaction terms fitted for medication use. RESULTS: The pooled sample included a total of 554 participants (308 males and 246 females). Meta-analysis of regression coefficients revealed no significant change in either systolic or diastolic BP per portion FV increase, although there was significant heterogeneity across trials for systolic BP (I2 = 73%). Neither adjusting for change in body mass index, nor analysis according to use of anti-hypertensive medication altered the relationship. There was no significant change in lipid profile per portion FV increase, although there was a significant reduction in total cholesterol among those not on lipid-lowering therapy (P < 0.05 after Bonferroni correction). CONCLUSION: Pooled analysis of six individual FV trials showed no impact of increasing intake on BP or lipids, but there was a total cholesterol-lowering effect in those not on lipid-lowering therapy.

Introduction: Deep cavernomas of eloquent areas, located in the region of the basal nuclei and thalamus, account for 9 to 36% of these encephalic vascular malformations. Internal capsule cavernomas are particularly challenging, as they are surrounded by important projection fibers and their manipulation can lead to permanent deficits. To demonstrate through surgical cases that cavernomas of the internal capsule can be approached by frontal craniotomy, via the superior frontal sulcus, in a curative manner and with low morbidity. Methods: We presented two cases of cavernomas of the internal capsule operated, whose treatment was microsurgical resection via frontal craniotomy and access to the lesion via the superior frontal sulcus, described step-by-step. To elucidate the rationale behind the decision, we used preoperative images with an emphasis on the patients' tractography and the importance of comparing these images with anatomical specimens dissected in the neuroanatomy and microsurgery laboratory. Results: The two cases of internal capsule cavernomas, one in the anterior limb and the other in the posterior limb, were treated surgically via the superior frontal sulcus. Discussion: Both patients showed radiological cure and clinical improvement in the post-operative segment. The patient consented to the procedure and to the publication of his/her image. Treatment of internal capsule cavernomas via the superior frontal sulcus has proven to be a safe and effective option.

The effects of the Marek's disease vaccine (MDV) on the live performance, breast meat yield, and incidence of woody breast myopathy (WBM) of Ross 708 broilers were investigated when administered alone or in conjunction with in ovo and dietary supplemental 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25OHD3). At 18 d of incubation (doi), four in ovo injection treatments were randomly assigned to live embryonated Ross 708 broiler hatching eggs: (1) non-injected; (2) commercial MDV alone; or MDV containing either (3) 1.2 or (4) 2.4 µg of 25OHD3. An Inovoject multi-egg injector was used to inject a 50 µL solution volume into each egg. The birds were provided a commercial diet that contained 250 IU of cholecalciferol/kg of feed (control) or a commercial diet that was supplemented with an additional 2760 IU of 25OHD3/kg of feed (HyD-diet). In the growout period, 14 male broilers were placed in each of 48 floor pens resulting 6 replicated pens per in ovo x dietary treatment combination. Live performance variable were measured at each dietary phases from 0 to 14, 15 to 28, and 29 to 40 d of age (doa). At 14 and 40 doa, pectoralis major (P. major) and pectoralis minor (P. minor) muscles were determined for one bird within each of the six replicate pens. At 41 doa, WBM incidence was determined. No significant main or interaction effects occurred for WBM among the dietary or in ovo injection treatments. However, in response to in ovo 25OHD3 supplementation, BW and BWG in the 29 to 40 doa period and BWG and FCR in the 0 to 40 doa period improved. In addition, at 40 and 41 doa, breast meat yield increased in response to in ovo and dietary 25OHD3 supplementation. Future research is needed to determine the possible reasons that may have been involved in the aforementioned improvements.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged fetal exposure to hyperglycemia may increase the risk of developing abnormal glucose metabolism and type-2 diabetes during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood; however, the mechanisms by which gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) predisposes offspring to metabolic disorders remain unknown. AIM: To quantify the nerve axons, macrophages, and vasculature in the pancreas from adult offspring born from mouse dams with GDM. METHODS: GDM was induced by i.p. administration of streptozotocin (STZ) in ICR mouse dams. At 12 wk old, fasting blood glucose levels were determined in offspring. At 15 wk old, female offspring born from dams with and without GDM were sacrificed and pancreata were processed for immunohistochemistry. We quantified the density of sensory [calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)] and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) axons, blood vessels (endomucin), and macro-phages (CD68) in the splenic pancreas using confocal microscopy. RESULTS: Offspring mice born from STZ-treated dams had similar body weight and blood glucose values compared to offspring born from vehicle-treated dams. However, the density of CGRP+ and TH+ axons, endomucin+ blood vessels, and CD68+ macrophages in the exocrine pancreas was significantly greater in offspring from mothers with GDM vs control offspring. Likewise, the microvasculature in the islets was significantly greater, but not the number of macrophages within the islets of offspring born from dams with GDM compared to control mice. CONCLUSION: GDM induces neuronal, vascular, and inflammatory changes in the pancreas of adult progeny, which may partially explain the higher propensity for offspring of mothers with GDM to develop metabolic diseases.

Cavernous malformations (CMs) account for 10%-15% of all vascular malformations and represent the second most common type of cerebral vascular lesion.1 They typically occur in the cerebral subcortex or white matter.2 CMs located in the thalamus are rare.3 When we isolate the group of thalamic CMs, we find a bleeding risk of >5% per year, with a rebleeding rate exceeding 60%, often occurring within 1 year of the initial bleeding.1 The deep location and proximity to eloquent brain regions make thalamic CMs challenging for neurosurgeons.4,5 Surgeons can access the posterolateral thalamus through various surgical approaches, such as transcallosal transventricular, supracerebellar transtentorial, intraparietal sulcus, and transcortical methods. Selecting the best surgical approach requires considerable expertise, considering the patient's preoperative condition and the lesion's location.6-12 We discuss a complex case involving a 24-year-old patient with a right thalamic cavernoma and a history of 3 prior bleeding events. We present a step-by-step transcortical approach through the posterior portion of the superior temporal gyrus (Video 1). The patient consented to the procedure and publication of images. We demonstrate how the transtemporal posterior trajectory provides an optimal working corridor for safely removing this cavernous malformation without introducing new deficits.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical training continuously seeks innovative methods to enhance the acquisition of essential technical skills for neurosurgeons worldwide. While various training models have been employed, few truly replicate real-life conditions optimally. Human placenta is a good model for neurosurgical microsurgery training due to its anatomic similarities to neurovascular structures. Placental vessels exhibit a branching pattern and caliber comparable with intracranial vessels, making them suitable for practicing microsurgical techniques. The study aims to delineate the anatomic zones of the placenta and propose a segmented training model, resulting in a reproducible, cost-effective, and realistic neurosurgical microsurgery training environment. METHODS: Twenty human placentas were meticulously prepared, injected with dyes, and categorized into zones on the basis of anatomic features. Measurements of placental vessels were recorded and compared with cerebral vessels. The placenta was divided into 4 quadrants to facilitate specific training techniques. RESULTS: Our results revealed varying vessel diameters across placental zones, closely resembling cerebral vessels. Different microsurgical techniques were applied to specific placental zones, thereby optimizing training scenarios. The applicability section described exercises such as membrane dissection, vessel skeletonization, aneurysm creation, vascular bypass, and tumor dissection within the placental model, providing detailed guidance on the zones suitable for each exercise. CONCLUSIONS: Human placenta serves as an effective microsurgical training model for neurosurgery, enhancing neurosurgeons' skills through anatomic segmentation. Integrating this model into training programs can significantly contribute to skill acquisition and improved surgical outcomes. Further research is warranted to refine and expand its utilization, complemented by clinical experiences and other simulation tools.

PURPOSE: Nonadherence to medication reduces treatment effectiveness, and in chronic conditions it can significantly reduce health outcomes. In glaucoma, suboptimal adherence can lead to sight loss, which places a greater financial burden on society and reduces patients' quality of life. Interventions to improve adherence have so far had limited success and lack robust theoretical underpinnings. A better understanding of the determinants of medication adherence behaviour is needed in order to develop interventions that can target these factors more effectively. This systematic review aims to identify modifiable barriers and enablers to glaucoma medication adherence and identify factors most likely to influence adherence behaviour. RECENT FINDINGS: We searched CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and sources of grey literature up to August 2022 for studies reporting determinants of glaucoma medication adherence. Data describing modifiable barriers/enablers to adherence were extracted and analysed using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), a behavioural framework consisting of 14 domains representing theoretical factors that most likely influence behaviour. Data were deductively coded into one of the TDF domains and inductively analysed to generate themes. Key behavioural domains influencing medication adherence were identified by frequency of study coding, level of elaboration and expressed importance. Eighty-three studies were included in the final synthesis. Four key domains influencing glaucoma medication adherence were identified: 'Environmental Context and Resources', 'Knowledge', 'Skills' and 'Memory, Attention and decision processes'. Frequently reported barriers included complex eyedrop regimens, lack of patient understanding of their condition, forgetfulness and difficulties administering eyedrops. Whereas simplified treatments, knowledgeable educated patients and good patient-practitioner relationships were enablers to adherence. SUMMARY: We identified multiple barriers and enablers affecting glaucoma medication adherence. Four theoretical domains were found to be key in influencing adherence behaviour. These findings can be used to underpin the development of behaviour change interventions that aim to improve medication adherence.

Introduction Actigraphy has been used widely in sleep research due to its non-invasive, cost-effective ability to monitor sleep. Traditionally, manually-scored actigraphy has been deemed the most appropriate in the research setting; however, technological advances have seen the emergence of automatic-scoring wearable devices and software. Methods A total of 60-nights of sleep data from 20-healthy adult participants (10 male, 10 female, age: 26 ± 10 years) were collected while wearing two devices concomitantly. The objective was to compare an automatic-scoring device (Fatigue Science Readiband™ [AUTO]) and a manually-scored device (Micro Motionlogger® [MAN]) based on the Cole-Kripke method. Manual-scoring involved trained technicians scoring all 60-nights of sleep data. Sleep indices including total sleep time (TST), total time in bed (TIB), sleep onset latency (SOL), sleep efficiency (SE), wake after sleep onset (WASO), wake episodes per night (WE), sleep onset time (SOT) and wake time (WT) were assessed between the two devices using mean differences, 95% levels of agreement, Pearson-correlation coefficients ( r ), and typical error of measurement (TEM) analysis. Results There were no significant differences between devices for any of the measured sleep variables ( p ≥0.05). All sleep indices resulted in very-strong correlations ( all r ≥0.84) between devices. A mean difference between devices of <1 minutes for TST was associated with a TEM of 15.5 minute (95% CI =12.3 to 17.7 minutes). Conclusion Given there were no significant differences between devices in the current study, automatic-scoring actigraphy devices may provide a more practical and cost-effective alternative to manually-scored actigraphy in healthy populations.

In ovo administration as a possible alternative method of 6/85 MG vaccination was assessed. After 18 days of incubation (doi), the eggs were administered a particular dosage of a live attenuated 6/85 MG vaccine in either the air cell (AC) or amnion (AM). The treatments included non-injected eggs and eggs injected into the AC or AM with diluent alone as controls. Treatments also included eggs injected with diluent, which contained 1.73 × 102, or 1.73 × 104 CFU of 6/85 MG. Hatchability of viable injected eggs (HI) and residual embryonic mortality were determined at 22 doi. At hatch and at three weeks posthatch, one hatched chick per treatment replicate was bled and swabbed for the detection of 6/85 MG in the choanal cleft using PCR, serum plate agglutination (SPA), and ELISA methods. The results show that AC in ovo injection of 6/85 MG had no negative impacts on HI or on the live performance of pullets, but that it failed to provide adequate protection (p ≤ 0.0001) in hatchlings or three-week-old pullets. The 1.73 × 104 6/85 MG CFU dosage injected into the AM decreased the hatchability of injected eggs containing viable embryos (HI; p = 0.009) and was associated with a significant increase in late dead mortality (p = 0.001). Hatchling and three-week-old chick mortalities (p = 0.008) were significantly greater in the 1.73 × 104 CFU-AM treatment group in comparison with the other treatment groups. In addition, the 1.73 and 1.73 × 102 6/85 MG-AM treatments had no negative effects on the hatching process or on posthatch growth, and the 1.73 × 102 6/85 MG-AM treatment was more effective in the protection of pullets against MG (p ≤ 0.0001) as compared with the low dosage and non-injected treatment groups. Further research is needed to examine the influence of the 6/85 MG in ovo vaccine on layer immune competence.

PURPOSE: Myopia prevalence has increased in the UK at age 10-16y, but little is known about younger children. We hypothesise that if the 'myopia epidemic' is affecting young children, then there will be increasing rates of bilateral reduced unaided vision (V) at vision screenings of children 4-5 years of age. METHODS: Retrospective anonymised data from computerised vision screening at age 4-5 years were analysed from serial cross-sectional data. Refractive error is not assessed in UK vision screening, so vision was investigated. Data were only included from schools that screened every year from 2015/16 to 2021/22. The criterion used was unaided monocular logMAR (automated letter-by-letter scoring) vision >0.20 in both the right and left eyes, so as to maximise the chances of detecting bilateral, moderate myopia rather than amblyopia. RESULTS: Anonymised raw data were obtained for 359,634 screening episodes from 2075 schools. Once schools were excluded where data were not available for every year and data were cleaned, the final database comprised 110,076 episodes. The proportion (percentage and 95% CI) failing the criterion from 2015/16 to 2021/22 were 7.6 (7.2-8.0), 8.5 (8.1-8.9), 7.5 (7.1-7.9), 7.8 (7.4-8.2), 8.7 (8.1-9.2), 8.5 (7.9-9.0) and 9.3 (8.8-9.7), respectively. The slope of the regression line showed a trend for increasing rates of reduced bilateral unaided vision, consistent with increasing frequency of myopia (p = 0.06). A decreasing linear trendline was noted for children 'Under Professional Care'. CONCLUSIONS: For children 4-5 years of age, there were signs of reduced vision over the last 7 years in England. Consideration of the most likely causes support the hypothesis of increasing myopia. The increase in screening failures highlights the importance of eye care in this young population.

Effects of the in ovo injection of various levels of L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) on the performance and corneal erosion incidence in Ross 708 broilers exposed to 50 parts per million (ppm) of atmospheric ammonia (NH3) after hatch were determined. A total of 1440 Ross 708 broiler embryos were randomly assigned to 4 treatments: non-injected (control), 0.85% sterile saline-injected (control), or saline containing 12 or 25 mg of L-AA. At hatch, 12 male chicks were randomly assigned to each of 48 battery cages with 12 replicate cages randomly assigned to each treatment group. All birds were exposed to 50 ppm of NH3 for 35 d and the concentration of NH3 in the battery cage house was recorded every 20 s. Mortality was determined daily, and mean body weight (BW), BW gain (BWG), average daily BW gain (ADG), and feed intake, as well as feed conversion ratio (FCR), were determined weekly. From 0 to 35 d of post-hatch age (doa), six birds from each cage were selected and sampled for eye erosion scoring. Incidences of corneal erosion were significantly higher at 21 and 28 doa in comparison to those at 14 and 35 doa, and at 21 doa, birds in the saline-injected group exhibited a higher incidence of corneal erosion compared to all other treatment groups. The in ovo injection of 12 mg of L-AA increased BWG (p = 0.043) and ADG (p = 0.041), and decreased FCR (p = 0.043) from 0 to 28 doa in comparison to saline-injected controls. In conclusion the in ovo administration of 12 mg of L-AA may have the potential to improve the live performance of broilers chronically exposed to high aerial NH3 concentrations, but further study is needed to determine the physiological and immunological factors that may contribute to this improvement.

The manipulation of light exposure in the evening has been shown to modulate sleep, and may be beneficial in a military setting where sleep is reported to be problematic. This study investigated the efficacy of low-temperature lighting on objective sleep measures and physical performance in military trainees. Sixty-four officer-trainees (52 male/12 female, mean ± SD age: 25 ± 5 years) wore wrist-actigraphs for 6 weeks during military training to quantify sleep metrics. Trainee 2.4-km run time and upper-body muscular-endurance were assessed before and after the training course. Participants were randomly assigned to either: low-temperature lighting (LOW, n = 19), standard-temperature lighting with a placebo "sleep-enhancing" device (PLA, n = 17), or standard-temperature lighting (CON, n = 28) groups in their military barracks for the duration of the course. Repeated-measures ANOVAs were run to identify significant differences with post hoc analyses and effect size calculations performed where indicated. No significant interaction effect was observed for the sleep metrics; however, there was a significant effect of time for average sleep duration, and small benefits of LOW when compared with CON (d = 0.41-0.44). A significant interaction was observed for the 2.4-km run, with the improvement in LOW (Δ92.3 s) associated with a large improvement when compared with CON (Δ35.9 s; p = 0.003; d = 0.95 ± 0.60), but not PLA (Δ68.6 s). Similarly, curl-up improvement resulted in a moderate effect in favour of LOW (Δ14 repetitions) compared with CON (Δ6; p = 0.063; d = 0.68 ± 0.72). Chronic exposure to low-temperature lighting was associated with benefits to aerobic fitness across a 6-week training period, with minimal effects on sleep measures.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of a myopia control spectacle lens (DIMS) at slowing the progression of myopia in a population of European children in comparison with 0.01% atropine and combined DIMS and atropine. METHODS: The study was a non-randomised experimenter-masked prospective controlled observational study of individuals aged 6-18 years with progressing myopia but no ocular pathology. Participants were allocated, according to patient/parent choice, to receive 0.01% atropine eyedrops, DIMS (Hoya® MiyoSmart®) spectacles, combined atropine+DIMS or single vision spectacle lenses (control group). The key outcome variables, cycloplegic autorefraction spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL), were measured at baseline and after three, six, and 12 months. RESULTS: Of the 146 participants (mean age 10.3y ±3.2), 53 received atropine, 30 DIMS spectacles, 31 atropine+DIMS, and 32 single vision control spectacles. Generalized linear mixed model analysis revealed for SER, whilst controlling for age and SER at baseline, at each stage all treatment groups had significantly reduced progression compared with the control group (p<0.016). For AL, whilst controlling for baseline age and AL, at 6 and 12 months all treatment groups had significantly less progression than the control group (p<0.005). For SER only, in pairwise comparisons at 12 months the atropine+DIMS group had significantly reduced progression compared with the DIMS only and Atropine only groups (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: In a European population, DIMS and atropine are effective at reducing myopia progression and axial elongation in progressing myopia and are most successful at reducing myopia progression when used in combination.

A hypothesis was tested that quantitative feed restriction affects the reproductive performance and offspring sex ratio of female Chukar breeder partridges. A total of 160 2.5-year-old male and female partridges were randomly allotted to four treatment groups. The birds in the control group were fed ad libitum, whereas those in treatments G95 , G90 , and G85 received 26.1, 24.7, and 23.3 g of feed per bird/day to provide 95%, 90%, and 85% of ad libitum feeding level, respectively. The reproductive performances of female Chukar partridges including egg production, egg quality, fertility rate, duration of fertility, hatchability, chick quality, mortality rate, and offspring sex ratio (using a PCR procedure) were investigated. Feed restriction of all levels decreased the body weight and egg production compared with the ad libitum birds; however, restricted feeding had no significant effect on the egg quality traits. Non-significant effects of treatment on fertility and hatchability rate were found. The restricted feeding reduced the duration of fertility. Furthermore, maternal restricted feeding resulted in decreased chick weights. The results of this study showed that embryonic mortality was not affected by the restricted feeding of Chukar breeder partridges. Interestingly, restricted feeding was associated with a decreased proportion of male offspring. Overall, body weight, egg production, duration of fertility, progeny chick weight, and sex ratio were responsive to restricted feeding where their changes make the restricted feeding regimens to not be practically recommended in breeder partridge production. These results are in contrast to the conventional restricted feeding program implemented in broiler breeder industry.

The aganglionic bowel in short-segment Hirschsprung's disease is characterized both by the absence of enteric ganglia and the presence of extrinsic thickened nerve bundles (TNBs). The relationship between the TNBs and the loss of enteric ganglia is unknown. Previous studies have described decreasing numbers of ganglia with increasing density of TNBs within the transition zone (TZ) between ganglionic and aganglionic gut, and there is some evidence of spatial contact between them in this region. To determine the cellular interactions involved, we have analysed the expression of perineurial markers of TNBs and enteric ganglionic markers for both neural cells and their ensheathing telocytes across four cranio-caudal segments consisting of most proximal ganglionic to most distal aganglionic from pull-through resected colon. We show that in the TZ, enteric ganglia are abnormal, being surrounded by perineurium cells characteristic of TNBs. Furthermore, short processes of ganglionic neurons extend caudally towards the aganglionic region, where telocytes in the TNB are located between the perineurium and nerve fibres into which they project telopodes. Thus, enteric ganglia within the TZ have abnormal structural characteristics, the cellular relationships of which are shared by the TNBs. These findings will help towards elucidation of the cellular mechanisms involved in the aetiology of Hirschsprung's disease.

Effects of the in ovo administration of two vitamin D3 sources (vitamin D3 (D3) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3)) on the expression of D3 activity- and immunity-related genes in broilers subjected to a coccidiosis infection were investigated. At 18 d of incubation (doi), five in ovo injection treatments were administrated to live embryonated Ross 708 broiler hatching eggs: non-injected (1) and diluent-injected (2) controls, or diluent injection containing 2.4 µg of D3 (3) or 2.4 µg of 25OHD3 (4), or their combination (5). Birds in the in ovo-injected treatments were challenged at 14 d of age (doa) with a 20× dosage of a live coccidial vaccine. At 14 and 28 doa, the expression of eight immunity-related genes (IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, TLR-4, TLR-15, MyD88, TGF-ß4, and IFN-γ) and four D3 activity-related genes (1α-hydroxylase, 25-hydroxylase, 24-hydroxylase, and VDR) in the jejunum of one bird in each treatment-replicate group were evaluated. No significant treatment effects were observed for any of the genes before challenge. However, at 2 weeks post-challenge, the expression of 1α-hydroxylase, TGF-ß4, and IL-10 increased in birds that received 25OHD3 alone in comparison to all the other in ovo-injected treatment groups. Additionally, the expression of 24-hydroxylase and IL-6 decreased in birds that received 25OHD3 in comparison to those injected with diluent or D3 alone. It was concluded that the in ovo injection of 2.4 µg of 25OHD3 may improve the intestinal immunity as well as the activity of D3 in Ross 708 broilers subjected to a coccidiosis challenge.

Effects of the dietary and in ovo administration of L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) on the performance, plasma nitric oxide, and eye L-AA concentrations of Ross 708 broilers were investigated. At 17 days of incubation, live embryonated hatching eggs were randomly assigned to a non-injected or sham-injected (100 µL of saline) control group, or a group injected with either 12 or 25 mg of L-AA suspended in 100 µL of saline. Chicks received a commercial diet with or without 200 mg/kg of supplemental L-AA and were randomly assigned to each of 6 replicate floor pens in each in ovo injection-dietary treatment combination. Weekly live performance variables through 14 days of post hatch age (doa) and the eye weights in both sexes at 0, 7, and 14 doa were determined. At 0 and 14 doa, plasma nitric oxide levels and eye L-AA concentrations of one bird of each sex in each pen were determined. Dietary supplemental L-AA decreased feed intake and growth between 0 and 7 doa, but from 8 to 14 doa; all birds fed supplemental L-AA had a lower feed conversion ratio. At 14 doa, male chicks had higher eye L-AA concentrations and lower plasma nitric oxide levels when treated in ovo with 12 mg of L-AA. In conclusion, dietary L-AA may be used to improve feed conversion in the second week of broiler post hatch growth. However, the in ovo administration of 12 mg of L-AA can increase male eye L-AA concentrations and is effective in reducing their general inflammatory response.

RESUMO

This article aims to provide a better understanding of the associations between groups of socioeconomic variables and confirmed cases of COVID-19. The focus is on cross-continental differences of reported positive, negative, unclear, or no associations. A systematic review of the literature is conducted on the Web of Science and SCOPUS databases. Our search identifies 314 eligible studies published on or before 31 December 2021. We detect nine groups of frequently used socioeconomic variables and results are presented by region of the world (Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North American and South America). The review expands to describe the most used statistical and modelling techniques as well as inclusion of additional dimensions such as demographic, healthcare weather and mobility. Meanwhile findings agree on the generalized positive impact of population density, per capita GDP and urban areas on transmission of infections, contradictory results have been found concerning to educational level and income.
