Background: Research has shown that number of and blast-related Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are associated with higher levels of service-connected disability (SCD) among US veterans. This study builds and tests a prediction model of SCD based on combat and training exposures experienced during active military service.Methods: Based on 492 US service member and veteran data collected at four Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) sites, traditional and Machine Learning algorithms were used to identify a best set of predictors and model type for predicting %SCD ≥50, the cut-point that allows for veteran access to 0% co-pay for VA health-care services.Results: The final model of predicting %SCD ≥50 in veterans revealed that the best blast/injury exposure-related predictors while deployed or non-deployed were: 1) number of controlled detonations experienced, 2) total number of blast exposures (including controlled and uncontrolled), and 3) the total number of uncontrolled blast and impact exposures.Conclusions and Relevance: We found that the highest blast/injury exposure predictor of %SCD ≥50 was number of controlled detonations, followed by total blasts, controlled or uncontrolled, and occurring in deployment or non-deployment settings. Further research confirming repetitive controlled blast exposure as a mechanism of chronic brain insult should be considered.

Although haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is curative for sickle cell anaemia (SCA), concerns about its short- and long-term toxicities limit its application. A potential toxicity is an adverse effect on growth. To identify an HCT growth effect, serial height and weight measurements from 53 children and adolescents with SCA after receiving a transplant were compared to historical controls. Hierarchical Linear Models for longitudinal data were used for analysis. In general growth was not impaired by HCT for SCA in young children; however, diminished growth may occur if HCT is carried out near or during the adolescent growth spurt.

Early in the pandemic, psychologists who engaged in HIV/AIDS research and practice or care relied more on their "general" psychological knowledge and training than on HIV/AIDS-specific information or training for combating the disease. In the past two decades much has been gained from the contributions of psychologists working in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention and intervention. However, little is known regarding how the discipline prepares its students for a career in HIV/AIDS research and practice/care. One important venue for educating future psychologists is college-level textbooks because they are often the students' gateway to the scientific literature in psychology. Therefore, presentation of adequate and accurate information in these texts is critical. The present study involved a review and content analysis of introductory, clinical/counseling, health, human sexuality, and social/community psychology textbooks. It revealed that some level of information regarding HIV/AIDS was found in the majority of most college-level psychology texts that were reviewed. However, many books do not present a comprehensive overview or review of this problem, and do not adequately address the role psychology and behavior change can play in abating it. Implications for education, training, and practices are discussed.
