RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of stoma care training delivered using PechaKucha (PK) on the stoma care skills and anxiety of nursing students. BACKGROUND: Innovative learning methods are needed to make the educational content of nursing courses more interesting and comprehensible. The PK presentation technique is used in various business sectors and can be considered as a novel teaching strategy for the development of stoma care skills in nursing education. The PK method is a visual and narrative slide-based presentation technique involving 20 slides (usually containing images only) that are shown for 20 s each, for a total presentation length of 6 min and 40 s. DESIGN: A single-blind randomized controlled study was conducted according to the CONSORT guideline. METHODS: The study sample comprised 96 first-year nursing students (47 in the intervention group and 49 controls). Data were collected during the 2024 spring semester using a student information form, the Stoma Care Skill Rubric and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Stoma care training was delivered using the PK method for the intervention group and a classic lecture presentation for the control group. SPSS version 25.0 was used for statistical analysis. Independent-samples t-test was used to evaluate differences in mean stoma care skill and anxiety scores between the intervention and control groups. RESULTS: The mean stoma care skills score two days after training was significantly higher in the intervention group (mean 42.59, SD 4.44) than in the control group (mean 33.87, SD 7.52) (p<0.05). Mean state anxiety scores after training did not differ significantly between the intervention group (mean 41.74, SD 6.51) and the control group (mean 43.08, SD 6.62) (p>0.05; Table 3). CONCLUSION: The PK method can be used as an alternative to classic slide-based presentations in nursing education. This study offers the first literature data regarding the efficacy of PK-based education for nursing care skills. Concise and image-based PK presentations may make the skill steps easier to understand and remember.

RESUMO

AIM: To determine attitudes and levels of knowledge related to pressure injury (PI) prevention among operating room nurses and identify associated factors. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in Turkey with a sample of 112 operating room nurses recruited by the snowball method of convenience sampling. Data were collected online via Google Forms using a nurse data collection form, the Knowledge of Operating Room Nurses about Pressure Injuries Form, and the Attitude Towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument (APuP). RESULTS: The operating room nurses' mean score for PI knowledge was 52.19 ± 17.01 out of 100, and their mean total APuP score was 42.28 ± 5.19 out of 52. Knowledge about PIs was negatively associated with being male (ß = -0.287, p < 0.001) and positively associated with intervening to prevent PIs during surgery (ß = 0.214, p = 0.008), using international PI guidelines as a reference in the operating room (ß = -0.225, p = 0.005), and APuP score (ß=.415, p < 0.001). Intervening to prevent PIs during surgery (ß = 0.294, p = 0.003) was a significant predictor of attitude toward PI prevention. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that overall, operating room nurses have insufficient knowledge but positive attitudes about PI prevention. Female gender, using international PI reference guides in the operating room, and positive attitude toward PI prevention were identified as factors associated with higher PI knowledge level, while intervening to prevent PIs during surgery was positively associated with both knowledge level and attitude toward PI prevention.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of pain management education on nursing students' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs concerning pain management in Turkey. DESIGN AND METHODS: A quasi-experimental design with pretest/posttest measures was used. The study sample included 79 students. FINDINGS: The nursing students were found to have enhanced knowledge, attitudes following the initial education, and at the 3-month evaluation, compared to their knowledge and attitudes about pain before the education. However, education had no influence on their organic and psychological beliefs as they did not change across time. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Pain management education improved the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students. Nurse educators could revise their teaching methods and adopt interactive education methods.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The side effects of local and systemic treatments for breast cancer negatively impact the body image, sexual functioning, and social life of women on treatment for breast cancer. One of the ways to help these women adapt to their disease and cope with the effects of the disease and the side effects of its treatment is through support groups. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a support group intervention, guided by Roy's Adaptation Model, on sexual adaptation, body image, and perceived social support in women on treatment for cancer. METHODS: The study had a quasi-experimental design with pretests and posttests and a control group. The sample included 79 women, 42 in the control group and 37 in the intervention group. Data were gathered with demographic and clinical forms, the Sexual Adjustment and Body Image Scale, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The intervention group received a support group intervention guided by Roy's Adaptation Model. RESULTS: The intervention group had significantly higher scores for perceived social support, post body image, impact on sexual functioning, and friendly and significant others than the control group did. CONCLUSION: The Roy's Adaptation Model-based support group intervention contributes positively to physiologic, self-concept, role-function, and interdependence modes by creating a positive effect on body image, improving sexual functions, and increasing social support for women on treatment for breast cancer. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This support group intervention may enhance care outcomes in women on treatment for cancer and could thus be incorporated into standard care for this patient group.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the validity and reliability of the Sexual Adjustment and Body Image Scale in Turkish breast cancer women. METHODS: This is a methodological and cross-sectional study, and included 161 breast cancer women. RESULTS: The factor loadings in the exploratory factor analysis ranged from 0.83 to 0.90 for the sexual adjustment scales and ranged from 0.52 to 0.86 for the body image scale. The Cronbach's alpha values were 0.86, 0.83, and 0.89 for the subscales of sexual adjustment and 0.77 and 0.81 for the subscales of body image. CONCLUSION: The scale is a valid and reliable tool to evaluate sexual adjustment and body image in Turkish breast cancer women.
