INTRODUCTION: Obesity has been linked with an increased incidence of melanoma; however, there are few data about its impact on melanoma prognosis. We aimed to determine if there is an association between body mass index (BMI) and overall survival (OS) in 707 patients with melanoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 707 patients with melanoma collected consecutively from 2005 to 2015 with a diagnosis of melanoma, who were been diagnosed and treated in our institution and who had clinical follow-up was carried out. Survival analysis was performed comparing patients according to their BMI. RESULTS: In a multivariate analysis, factors influencing the 5-year OS were a positive margin (HR = 3.475, 95% CI: 1.829-6.600), the clinical-stage (HR = 2.565, 95% CI: 2.020-3.257, per switch to the upper stage), ulceration (HR = 3.475, 95% CI: 1.829-6.600), and BMI (HR .905, p = 0.018 for the overweight group; HR = 0.663, p = 0.021 for obesity grade I). CONCLUSIONS: Patients who had a BMI between 25 and 34.9 kg/m2 had better survival.

RESUMO

Information and Communications Technologies in healthcare has increased the need to consider quality criteria through standardised processes. The aim of this study was to analyse the software quality evaluation models applicable to healthcare from the perspective of ICT-purchasers. Through a systematic literature review with the keywords software, product, quality, evaluation and health, we selected and analysed 20 original research papers published from 2005-2016 in health science and technology databases. The results showed four main topics: non-ISO models, software quality evaluation models based on ISO/IEC standards, studies analysing software quality evaluation models, and studies analysing ISO standards for software quality evaluation. The models provide cost-efficiency criteria for specific software, and improve use outcomes. The ISO/IEC25000 standard is shown as the most suitable for evaluating the quality of ICTs for healthcare use from the perspective of institutional acquisition.

RESUMO

The eIMRT project is producing new remote computational tools for helping radiotherapists to plan and deliver treatments. The first available tool will be the IMRT treatment verification using Monte Carlo, which is a computational expensive problem that can be executed remotely on a GRID. In this paper, the current implementation of this process using GRID and SOA technologies is presented, describing the remote execution environment and the client.

RESUMO

In this paper, we present the eIMRT project which is currently carried out by diverse institutions in Galicia (Spain) and the USA. The eIMRT project will offer radiotherapists a set of algorithms to optimize and validate radiotherapy treatments, both CRT- and IMRT-based, hiding the complexity of the computer infrastructure needed to solve the problem using GRID technologies. The new platform is designed to be independent from the medical accelerator models, scalable and open. Having a web portal as client, it is designed in three layers using web services, which will allow users to access the platform directly from any front-end and client. It has three main components, namely remote characterization of linear accelerators for Monte Carlo and convolution/superposition (C/S) dose-calculation techniques, remote Grid-enabled radiotherapy treatment planning optimization and verification and data depository.
