RESUMO

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) results from protozoa Leishmania infantum and L. donovani infection. This study investigated whether host factors would explain the relapses. First, susceptibility to amphotericin B of L. infantum isolates was evaluated in vitro. Then, clinical data and the lipid profile of patients with relapsing and non-relapsing VL were assessed. Susceptibility to amphotericin B was similar between the isolates. CD4+ lymphocytes were reduced in both groups of patients in the first episode and with relapsing VL. Still, the strongest blood cell indicator associated with relapses was low total lymphocyte counts. Total plasma cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and, uniquely, triglycerides of the six individuals in the first episode and twenty-three with relapsing VL were lower in relapsing patients than those in the first episode. Deceased patients had extremely low low-density lipoprotein. After CD4+ decreases, lymphocyte CD8+ reduction is the final stage of immunological failure. The lower lipid concentrations appear to be secondary to the depletion of fat stores by inflammation-induced cachexia and fat exhaustion provoked by the co-occurrence of both diseases, which can finally lead to death.

RESUMO

The Prune-Belly (Eagle-Barrett) syndrome (PBS) is a congenital and genetically heterogeneous disease, more prevalent in males, defined by the clinical triad (1) deficiency of abdominal muscles, (2) bilateral cryptorchidism, and (3) urinary tract abnormalities. The abdomen of an infant with PBS has a typical appearance, similar to the aspect of a prune, which gives it its name. Although the etiology of this disorder is still unknown, numerous theories, mutations, and genetic disturbances have been proposed to explain the origin of PBS. Prognosis can differ a lot from one patient to another, since this condition has a wide spectrum of clinical presentation. Despite being a rare condition, the importance of PBS should not be underestimated, in the light of the potential of the disorder to lead to chronic kidney disease and other severe complications. In that regard, this review gathers the most up-to-date knowledge about the etiopathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, management and prognosis of PBS.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The main purpose of our study was to evaluate satisfaction, recurrence, bone union and other complications after a minimum of two years follow-up in patients who had percutaneous claw and hammer (CHT) second toe correction utilizing a novel distal and bicortical proximal phalanx osteotomy (DBPPO). METHODS: A minimum two-year follow-up prospective cohort study was conducted on consecutive patients with symptomatic CHT deformities of the second toe corrected with percutaneous surgery. Primary outcomes included satisfaction, recurrence, bony union, and other complication rates specific to the second toe deformity correction. Secondary outcomes included Metatarsophalangeal-Interphalangeal AOFAS scale and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). RESULTS: Between January and October 2020, 34 patients (43 feet) were clinically and radiologically evaluated pre and postoperatively at a mean of 26.6 months. Thirty-eight feet (88.4 %) were satisfied or very satisfied with their second toe deformity correction and 41 feet (95.3 %) would undergo surgery on this toe again. No deformity recurrence requiring revision was found. There were two complications (4.7 %): one toe (2.3 %) with persistent numbness and one (2.3 %) had a simple infection that resolved with oral antibiotics. All 43 s toe osteotomies demonstrated bony consolidation. Stiffness was reported in nine second toes (20.9 %), seven of them (77.8 %) having a rigid pre-operative deformity. Secondary outcomes demonstrated significant improvement in the mean ( ± standard deviation) AOFAS score which increased from 47.5 ± 17.9 preoperatively to 95.7 ± 7.7 postoperatively (p < .001). Mean VAS significantly improved from 4.9 ± 2.5 preoperatively to 0.3 ± 1.3 postoperatively (p < .001). CONCLUSION: Percutaneous treatment of claw and hammer second toe deformities utilizing a DBPPO resulted in high levels of satisfaction with bony consolidation, no recurrence and low complication rates at two years follow-up. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level II - Prospective cohort study.

RESUMO

In this technical report study, we describe technique for performing the osteotomy and screw passage in minimally invasive fourth-generation hallux valgus surgery with transverse and akin extra-articular metaphyseal osteotomy (META) using a 3D-printed patient-specific surgical instrumentation guide. In an effort to minimize the learning curve and address the variability associated with technical corrections and screw placement, we have initiated the creation of personalized patient-specific instrumentation guides using 3D printing. Our hypothesis is that this approach will enhance safety, precision, decrease surgical time, and reduce exposure to radiation. Level of Evidence: Level V, expert opinion.

RESUMO

Echocardiography frequently serves as the first-line treatment of diagnostic imaging for several pathological entities in cardiology. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been growing substantially in information technology and various commercial industries. Machine learning (ML), a branch of AI, has been shown to expand the capabilities and potential of echocardiography. ML algorithms expand the field of echocardiography by automated assessment of the ejection fraction and left ventricular function, integrating novel approaches such as speckle tracking or tissue Doppler echocardiography or vector flow mapping, improved phenotyping, distinguishing between cardiac conditions, and incorporating information from mobile health and genomics. In this review article, we assess the impact of AI and ML in echocardiography.

Echocardiography is the most common test in cardiovascular imaging and helps diagnose multiple different diseases. Machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), will reduce the workload for medical professionals and help improve clinical workflows. It can rapidly calculate a lot of important cardiac parameters such as the ejection fraction or important metrics during different phases of the cardiac cycle. Machine learning algorithms can include new technology in echocardiography such as speckle tracking, tissue Doppler echocardiography, vector flow mapping, and other approaches in a user-friendly manner. Furthermore, it can help find new subtypes of existing diseases in cardiology. In this review article, we look at the current role of machine learning and AI in the field of echocardiography.

RESUMO

The disease coronavirus COVID-19 has been the cause of millions of deaths worldwide. Among the proteins of SARS-CoV-2, non-structural protein 12 (NSP12) plays a key role during COVID infection and is part of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase complex. The monitoring of NSP12 polymorphisms is extremely important for the design of new antiviral drugs and monitoring of viral evolution. This study analyzed the NSP12 mutations detected in circulating SARS-CoV-2 during the years 2020 to 2022 in the population of the city of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. The most frequent mutations found were P323L and G671S. Reports in the literature indicate that these mutations are related to transmissibility efficiency, which may have contributed to the extremely high numbers of cases in this location. In addition, two mutations described here (E796D and R914K) are close and have RMSD that is similar to the mutations M794V and N911K, which have been described in the literature as influential on the performance of the NSP12 enzyme. These data demonstrate the need to monitor the emergence of new mutations in NSP12 in order to better understand their consequences for the treatments currently used and in the design of new drugs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The minimally invasive Chevron-Akin (MICA) is considered the third generation of minimally invasive hallux valgus (HV) surgery, and its original description included fixation of the Akin osteotomy with a screw. The aim of this study is to evaluate a series of patients undergoing HV correction using the MICA technique without screw fixation of the Akin osteotomy. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 58 consecutive patients who underwent surgical correction for HV between August 2018 and March 2020. A total of 69 feet were evaluated with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Clinical outcomes such as pain (VAS), function (AOFAS), range of movement, criteria personal satisfaction and complications were evaluated. RESULTS: The AOFAS score (mean ± standard deviation) significantly improved from 57.0 ± 8.6 preoperatively to 93.9 ± 8.7 postoperatively (p < .001) with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. The VAS score improved from 6.0 ± 1.8 preoperatively to 0.6 ± 1.4 at 2-year follow-up (p < .001), and the hallux valgus angle reduced from 39.7 ± 6.9 to 8.9 ± 9.0 (p < .001). The majority of patients (95.6%) reported the result as excellent or good, and the most common complication was the need to remove the screw (7.2%). CONCLUSIONS: The use of MICA without Akin osteotomy fixation resulted in successful correction of hallux valgus with improvements in clinical and radiographic parameters. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV, case series.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), or kala-azar, is a common comorbidity in patients with AIDS in endemic areas. Many patients continue to experiences relapses of VL despite virological control, but with immunological failure. These patients remain chronically symptomatic with hypersplenism, for example with anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia, and are at risk of severe co-infection due to low CD4+ count. Therefore, in this study, splenectomized patients with VL and HIV infection were investigated to understand why the CD4+ count fails to recover in these patients, evaluating the importance of spleen mass for hypersplenism and immunological failure. METHODS: From a retrospective open cohort of 13 patients who had previously undergone splenectomy as salvage therapy for relapsing VL, 11 patients with HIV infection were investigated. This study compared the patients' complete blood cell count (CBC) and CD4+ and CD8+ cell counts before and after splenectomy with respect to spleen weight. RESULTS: CBC was substantially improved after splenectomy, indicating hypersplenism. However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to show that spleen mass is strongly and negatively correlated with CD4+ cell count (ρ = -0.71, P = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS: This finding was unexpected, as the spleen is the most extensive lymphoid tissue and T-lymphocyte source. After reviewing the literature and reasoning, we hypothesized that the immunological failure was secondary to CD4+ loss initially by apoptosis in the spleen induced by productive HIV infection and, subsequently, by pyroptosis sustained by parasitic infection in spleen macrophages.

RESUMO

Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to address the Ponseti method in arthrogrypotic clubfoot treatment and evaluate the success, complication, and recurrence rates. Method: A systematic review was performed in the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases on 9 January 2023, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Success, recurrence, and complication rates were evaluated and analyzed. Risks of bias and the quality of the studies were also evaluated. Results: Five case series, including 53 patients (102 feet), were identified. According to this model, the initial success rate was 91% (95% confidence interval = 0.79-0.96) with I2 = 43%, and the final success was 68% (at 5.8 years of follow-up). Recurrence rate was 30% (95% confidence interval = 0.14-0.52). Conclusion: Ponseti method is indicated in the initial treatment of arthrogrypotic clubfeet, as it is a minimally invasive method with a high correction rate (91%). However, a high recurrence rate (30%) requires early detection and adequate treatment. Level of evidence: Level III. PROSPERO Protocol: CRD42020210373.

RESUMO

This study evaluated clinical features of individuals with long COVID (5-8 months after diagnosis) who reported sleep and memory problems (62 cases) compared to those without (52 controls). Both groups had a similar mean age (41 vs. 39 years). Around 86% of the participants were non-hospitalized at the time of infection, and none of them were vaccinated at that point. Subsequently, both cases and controls received the vaccine; however, the vaccination rates differed significantly between the groups (30.7% vs. 51.0%). Cases and controls had similar rates of symptoms at acute COVID phase. However, cases were more likely to experience coryza, dyspnea, headache, and nausea/vomiting during long COVID. Regarding new-onset symptoms in long COVID, 12.9% of cases had dyspnea, and 14.5% experienced nausea/vomiting, whereas in the control group there were only 1.9% and 0.0%, respectively. Cases also had a significantly higher prevalence of persistent headache (22.6% vs. 7.7%), and dyspnea (12.9% vs. 0.0). In addition, cases also showed an increased rate of mental health complaints: disability in daily activities (45.2% vs. 9.6%; P < 0.001); concentration/sustained attention difficulties (74.2% vs. 9.6%; P < 0.001); anxiety-Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2-item scale (GAD-2) ≥ 3 (66.1% vs. 34.6%; P = 0.0013); and "post-COVID sadness" (82.3% vs. 40.4%; P < 0.001). We observed a significant correlation between sadness and anxiety in cases, which was not observed in controls (P=0.0212; Spearman correlation test). Furthermore, the frequency of concomitant sadness and anxiety was markedly higher in cases compared to controls (59.7% vs. 19.2%) (P < 0.0001; Mann-Whitney test). These findings highlight a noteworthy association between sadness and anxiety specifically in cases. In conclusion, our data identified concurrent psychological phenotypes in individuals experiencing sleep and memory disturbances during long COVID. This strengthens the existing evidence that SARS-CoV-2 causes widespread brain pathology with interconnected phenotypic clusters. This finding highlights the need for comprehensive medical attention to address these complex issues, as well as major investments in testing strategies capable of preventing the development of long COVID sequelae, such as vaccination.

RESUMO

Background: The impact of pronation and sesamoid coverage on clinical outcomes following percutaneous hallux valgus surgery are not currently known. The aim of this study was to investigate if sesamoid coverage was associated with worse clinical outcomes at 12-month follow-up following percutaneous hallux valgus surgery. Methods: Retrospective comparative observational study of clinical and radiographic outcomes based on a previously published prospective dataset. Patients were stratified into 3 cohorts based on the degree of sesamoid coverage (normal, mild, or moderate) on 12-month weightbearing radiographs following fourth-generation percutaneous hallux valgus surgery. Primary outcome was a validated patient-reported outcome measure (PROM), the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ). Secondary outcomes included Euroqol-5D, VAS Pain, and radiographic deformity correction. Results: Forty-seven feet underwent primary fourth-generation HV surgery and were stratified into 3 cohorts. There were 19, 16, and 12 feet in the normal, mild, and moderate cohorts respectively. There was no significant difference in either pre- or postoperative foot function (all MOXFQ domains, P > .05) or health-related quality of life (EQ-5D Index or VAS, P > .05). The MOXFQ Index preoperatively was as follows: normal cohort, 56.1 ± 26.9; mild cohort, 54.1 ± 17.9; and severe cohort, 49.6 ± 23.8; and postoperatively was as follows: normal cohort, 15.6 ± 21.5; mild cohort, 11.4 ± 15.5; and severe cohort, 11.4 ± 13.6 (P = .737-.908). There was significantly worse hallux valgus angle (HVA) and intermetatarsal angle (IMA) between the cohorts (P < .01). Although HVA and IMA were corrected to normal parameters following surgery in all cohorts, there was a significantly worse postoperative HVA in the moderate sesamoid coverage (5.3 ± 3.9 vs 7.9 ± 5.3 vs 11.4 ± 3.7, P < .01); however, IMA was not significantly different (3.4 ± 2.2 vs 4.1 ± 2.7 vs 5.2 ± 2.9, P = .168). Conclusion: This study found that cases where the sesamoids were not reduced had a poorer correction and had worse preoperative deformity. Clinical outcomes and foot function following fourth-generation percutaneous hallux valgus surgery were not affected by sesamoid coverage at the 12-month follow-up. The long-term implications in the difference in radiographic deformity between the 3 cohorts are not known, and further work should explore the relationship of first ray pronation and sesamoid position, particularly with regard to recurrence. Level of evidence: Level III, retrospective comparative study of prospectively collected data.

RESUMO

The osteology, neuroanatomy, and musculature are known for most primary clades of turtles (i.e., "families"), but knowledge is still lacking for one particular clade, the Carettochelyidae. Carettochelyids are represented by only one living taxon, the pig-nosed turtle Carettochelys insculpta. Here, we use micro-computed tomography of osteological and contrast-enhanced stained specimens to describe the cranial osteology, neuroanatomy, circulatory system, and jaw musculature of Carettochelys insculpta. The jaw-related myology is described in detail for the first time for this taxon, including m. zygomaticomandibularis, a muscular unit only found in trionychians. We also document a unique arterial pattern for the internal carotid artery and its subordinate branches and provide an extensive list of osteological ontogenetic differences. The present work provides new insights into the craniomandibular anatomy of turtles and will allow a better understanding of the evolutionary history of the circulatory system of trionychians and intraspecific variation among turtles.

RESUMO

Metabolism, mainly driven by oxygen consumption, plays a key role in life, as it is one of the main ways to respond to extreme temperatures through internal processes. Theba pisana, a widespread Mediterranean land snail, is exposed to a wide range of ambient temperature. In this species the oxygen consumption was tested as a response variable by multiple regression modelling on the "explanatory" variables shell-free mass, temperature, and relative humidity. Our results show that the oxygen consumption of T. pisana can be well described (73.1%) by these three parameters. In the temperature range from 23 °C to 35 °C the oxygen consumption decreased with increasing temperature. Relative humidity, in the range of 67% to 100%, had the opposite effect: if it increases, oxygen consumption will increase as well. Metabolism is proportional to an individual's mass to the power of the allometric scaling exponent α, which is between 0.62 and 0.77 in the mentioned temperature range. CT scans of shells and gravimetry revealed the shell-free mass to be calculated by multiplying the shell diameter to the third power by 0.2105. Data were compared to metabolic scaling exponents for other snails reported in the literature.

RESUMO

Dihammaphora Chevrolat (Arc Nat 1:50-54, 1859) is one of the most diverse genera of Rhopalophorini, with 46 species. It is characterized mainly by species with antennae short and subserrated, with 10 or 11 antennomeres, prothorax cylindrical, and elytra punctuated. In this study, two new species of Dihammaphora are described and illustrated, new records are provided to 11 species, and taxonomic notes are given to six species of the genus. We examined 55 specimens and identified 16 species of the genus Dihammaphora, including Dihammaphora aurea sp. nov. from Honduras, and Dihammaphora cruzi sp. nov. from Brazil. The number of species of Dihammaphora is increased to 48, two of them in Central America, resulting in seven species for this region. In Brazil, 24 species are now recognized, being the country with the largest number of species of the genus. This study shows that there is still a deficit of knowledge about the diversity and distribution of Dihammaphora.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a main source of heel pain, and only about one-third of patients have bilateral symptomatic involvement, although age, body mass index (BMI), and physical activities are known risk factors. The high prevalence of unilateral involvement is poorly understood. We aimed to assess the potential association between PF and the leg length discrepancy (LLD) in unilateral PF. METHODS: A transversal case-control study was conducted from January 2019 to December 2020, including 120 participants allocated to two groups matched by BMI and sex: cases (with a diagnosis of PF; 50 ± 13 years) and control (without foot pain; 40 ± 15 years). For both groups, a difference greater than 0.64 cm in the scanometry determined the criteria for the presence of LLD. RESULTS: The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed an independent association of PF only with age (p < 0.001), and no association with LLD. We did not observe differences in the mean discrepancy (1.37 ± 0.83 cm in the PF group in comparison with 1.13 ± 0.37 cm in the control group, [p > 0.05]) or in the prevalence of LLD between groups (48% [n = 29] in the PF group compared with 42% [n = 25] in the control group, [p > 0.05]). In the PF group, 80% of the participants reported unilateral pain. We observed a higher prevalence of pain in the shorter limb (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Age was the only factor associated with the diagnosis of PF when groups were matched by sex and BMI. LLD was not an independent factor associated with the diagnosis of PF. However, when PF is unilateral, the shorter limb is more affected with 70% of prevalence. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, case-control.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Burns are defined as a traumatic injury, usually of thermal origin, that affects the epithelial and adjacent tissue and is classified according to the depth reached. Tissue repair involved in this type of injury is often a challenge both due to its severity and the multiplicity of complications. Regenerative medicine has focused on the use of low-level laser photobiomodulation therapy (LLLT) and adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC), especially in the early stages of the process, to promote better healing and shorten repair time. Therefore, aim of this study was to evaluate the action of LLLT (660 nm) and ADSC in the repair process of burned skin tissue and investigate the association of the techniques (LLLT and ADSC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An in vivo study was carried out using 96 rats (Wister) with a scald burn model at a temperature of 95ºC, exposing the animal's back for 14 s. Animals were randomized into seven groups and three periods, five, 14 and 21 days. The groups included GC: Control group, ADSC-: Group treated with CD49d negative cells, ADSC+ : Group treated with positive CD49d cells, CULT: Group treated with conventional isolation cells, LLLT: Group treated only with LLLT Low Power Laser, ADSC-LLLT: Group treated with CD49d negative cells and LLLT. ADSC+LLLT: Group treated with positive CD49d cells and LLLT. The groups treated with LLLT (660 nm; 5 J/cm2) received irradiation three times a week, on alternate days for five, 14 and 21 days, according to the time of biopsy. ADSC-treated groups received one to three applications of the cells in a total volume of 1000 µL starting soon after the surgical debridement of the burn. Photographic monitoring was carried out at 5, 14 and 21 days after the beginning of the experiment to assess the degree of lesion contraction. Macroscopic, morphometric and histopathological analyzes were performed. RESULTS: We showed significant re-epithelialization as well as an improvement in the healing process in the ADSC+, LLLT and ADSC+LLLT groups. We observed effects in the reduction of the inflammatory phase, increase in angiogenesis, decrease in oedema, greater collagen deposition, and better organization of the extracellular matrix compared to the other treatments. Moreover, the immunomagnetic separation of ADSC cells through the expression of the CD49d protein proved to be a useful means to obtain a more homogeneous population of cells with a role in tissue regeneration compared to the ADSC- and CULT groups. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the association of ADSC+ with LLLT was effective in accelerating the burn repair process, stimulating cell proliferation and formation of more normal skin tissue.

RESUMO

In this study, we analysed the molecular and morphometric differences of several populations of the putative sand fly vector Psychodopygus davisi (Root, 1934) (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) in Brazil. We amplified the 658 base pair fragments of the DNA barcoding region-cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene-for 57 specimens of P. davisi and three specimens of Psychodopygus claustrei (Abonnenc, Léger & Fauran, 1979). We merged our data with public sequences of the same species available from GenBank. Then, the combined dataset-87 sequences and 20 localities-was analysed using population structure analysis and different species delimitation approaches. Geometric morphometry of wings was performed for 155 specimens of P. davisi populations from the North, Midwest and Southeast Brazilian regions, analysing the differences in centroid sizes and canonical variates. Molecular analysis indicated high intraspecific genetic distance values for P. davisi (maximum p distance = 5.52%). All algorithms identified P. davisi and P. claustrei as distinct molecular taxonomic units, despite the low interspecific distance (p distance to the nearest neighbour = 4.79%). P. davisi sequences were split into four genetic clusters by population structure analysis and at least five genetic lineages using intermediate scenarios of the species delimitation algorithms. The species validation analysis of BPP strongly supported the five-species model in our dataset. We found high genetic diversity in this taxon, which is in agreement with its wide geographic distribution in Brazil. Furthermore, the wing analysis showed that specimens from the Southeast Region of Brazil are different from those in the North and the Midwest. The evolutionary patterns of P. davisi populations in Brazil suggest the presence of candidate species, which need to be validated in future studies using a more comprehensive approach with both genomic data and morphological characters.

RESUMO

Abstract Information regarding species occurrence is fundamental to understanding biodiversity distribution. However, the biodiversity from the west of the state of Paraná has been historically less studied, especially amphibians and reptiles. For this reason, we present the first reptile list of species from the west of the state of Paraná and extend the current list of anurans for the municipality of Foz do Iguaçu. The species list was based on a systematic field study conducted at Refúgio Biológico Bela Vista (RBV) a conservation area within the Hydroelectric Power Itaipu Binacional. We integrated the species list with previous species observations available in the literature for the same place where our sampling was conducted. A total of 41 species of amphibians and reptiles are presented. All amphibians species found were recorded in the field; however, from the 22 species of reptiles recorded, three were historical records obtained before this study. Species were all classified as Least Concern and/or had stable populational status according to the IUCN. Sampling sufficiency was achieved for anurans but not for reptiles, probably due to low abundance of several snake species. The most abundant species of anuran was Dendropsophus nanus, from the Hylidae family, whereas Leptodactylus plaumanni and Scinax squalirostris were represented by only one individual each. The lizard Salvator merianae was the most abundant reptile, and seven species were represented by only one individual each. The most successful sampling method for adult anurans was active search in water bodies whereas most of reptile species were observed by accidental encounters and not through a systematic sampling method. We found that herpetofauna composition from RBV was similar to other communities from Paraná state that also occur within the Semideciduous Seasonal Forest. Finally, as additional information to the species list, we offer species identification keys and discuss the importance of Refúgio Biológico Bela Vista to harbor the anuran and reptile diversity of the region.

ABSTRACT Purpose: Recently, hyaluronic acid (HA) was proposed as a promising option for the treatment of acquired lower eyelid cicatricial ectropion. However, this effect was not confirmed by quantitative assessments. This study aimed to assess the effect of hyaluronic acid on the treatment of acquired lower eyelid cicatricial ectropion. Methods: Eight patients with acquired lower eyelid cicatricial ectropion (13 eyelids) were treated with a single 1 mL injection of hyaluronic acid in the preseptal area of the lower eyelid. Evaluation of symptoms and biomicroscopic exam was performed before and 30 days after hyaluronic acid injection. Quantitative analysis of the lower eyelid position (with and without lid traction) was determined before and 30 days after hyaluronic acid injection through standard photographs analyzed using the ImageJ. Results: All patients experienced partial improvement of symptoms. The lower eyelid position was significantly lifted after hyaluronic acid injection with a significant reduction of medial and lateral angles, reduction of the margin reflex distance, and total and medial ocular fissure area. However, signs of lid margin inflammation and corneal punctate keratitis persisted. Conclusions: Hyaluronic acid injected in the pre-septal area of the lower eyelid improved acquired lower eyelid cicatricial ectropion symptoms and significantly lifted the position of the lower eyelid. Further studies, with a large number of participants and a long-term follow-up period, are needed to better determine the permanency of the effects of hyaluronic acid injections on the treatment of acquired lower eyelid cicatricial ectropion.
