RESUMO

Intercalation is a promising technique to modify the structural and electronic properties of 2D materials on the wafer scale for future electronic device applications. Yet, few reports to date demonstrate 2D intercalation as a viable technique on this scale. Spurred by recent demonstrations of mm-scale sensors, we use hydrogen intercalated quasi-freestanding bilayer graphene (hQBG) grown on 6H-SiC(0001), to understand the electronic properties of a large-area (16 mm2) device. To do this, we first analyze Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations and weak localization, permitting determination of the Fermi level, cyclotron effective mass, and quantum scattering time. Our transport results indicate that at low temperature, scattering in hQBG is dominated by charged impurities and electron-electron interactions. Using low- temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STS), we investigate the source of the charged impurities on the nm-scale via observation of Friedel oscillations. Comparison to theory suggests that the Friedel oscillations we observe are caused by hydrogen vacancies underneath the hQBG. Furthermore, STS measurements demonstrate that hydrogen vacancies in the hQBG have an extremely localized effect on the local density of states, such that the Fermi level of the hQBG is only affected directly above the location of the defect. Hence, we find that the calculated Fermi level from SdH oscillations on the millimeter scale agrees with the value measured locally on the nanometer scale with STS measurements.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperhidrosis (PHH) is a disorder of excessive sweating caused by aberrant cholinergic signaling. Sensitive skin (SS) is a condition of subjective cutaneous hyperreactivity to innocuous stimuli, impacting 40% to 70% of the population. SS is exacerbated by sweat, stress, and heat, suggesting that cholinergic stimulation may contribute to SS flares. OBJECTIVE: To survey PHH sufferers to assess hyperhidrosis (HH) and SS symptom burden. METHODS: An International Review Board (IRB)-exempt survey was disseminated by the International Hyperhidrosis Society. A predictive classification model for SS was built using random forest machine learning algorithms. RESULTS: Of the 637 respondents with PHH, 89% reported SS; and there was a significant association between HH and SS severity scores. Importantly, SS occurred on body sites affected and unaffected by HH. Predictive modeling designated Sensitive Scale-10 (SS-10), a validated questionnaire to gauge SS severity, to be the most helpful in predicting SS in this cohort. LIMITATIONS: Self-reported data. CONCLUSION: These data are the first to propose and support a relationship between SS and HH. SS occurred with greatest frequency at HH-afflicted body sites, but also occurred on unaffected sites, suggesting that sweat is not the sole causative link. Future work can explore cholinergic signaling as a potential link between these conditions. Screening HH patients for SS may be warranted. RESUMO

Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is associated with a number of published disparities, including those related to self-identified racial/ethnic populations. Black/African American populations in the United States experience greater AD prevalence, severity, and persistence compared to other demographic groups, such as those who self-identify as White. There is consistent evidence that healthcare, environmental, and socioeconomic factors affect the prevalence, severity, and/or persistence of AD. Additionally, because of institutional and systemic racism, these same risk factors are more prevalent in racial and ethnic minority populations. Herein, we review the underlying causes of racial/ethnic disparities in AD and potential strategies to improve AD diagnosis and disease control.

PURPOSE: Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) are either managed with non-operative strategies or surgery depending on the severity of lateral curvature and impact on quality of life. However, supportive evidence for the appropriate treatment approach is lacking in AIS patients with Cobb angles between 40 and 50 degrees. Therefore, we investigated differences in long-term patient-centered outcomes in AIS patients with Cobb angles between 40 and 50 degrees who received either operative or non-operative management. METHODS: A total of 919 patients aged 10-21 years old with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and 40-50 degree Cobb angles were identified from the HARMS Study Group (HSG) registry and dichotomized based on operative or non-operative management. Baseline and 2 year follow-up SRS-22 scores from these patients were analyzed for significant differences between the total score values, domain values, and the magnitude of score change over time using multiple comparisons analyses. Multivariable regressions adjusting for age, body mass index, location of spinal deformity, and management strategy were also performed. RESULTS: Operative versus non-operative strategy was significantly, independently associated with differences in SRS-22 total and domain scores over time (effect likelihood ratio test, p < 0.03 for all regressions). Operatively managed patients had significantly greater improvement in SRS-22 total and domain scores over the follow-up duration compared to non-operatively managed patients (p < 0.02 for all comparisons). CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary analysis suggests that operatively managed patients may have had better long-term outcomes than non-operatively managed patients within this AIS subpopulation. These findings support the need for further prospective investigation to determine the optimal management strategy to improve evidence-based, patient-reported outcomes for AIS patients with Cobb angles between 40 and 50 degrees. RESUMO

Papulopustular eruptions are the most common dermatologic side effect of epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor (EGFRI) therapy. Topical corticosteroids and oral tetracyclines are frequently used to manage these eruptions, though these treatments are limited by their adverse effects and efficacy. Results from preclinical studies suggest a role for topical aprepitant (HT-001) in the treatment of EGFRI-induced skin toxicities. Herein a case of EGFRI-induced papulopustular eruption with rapid treatment response to topical aprepitant (HT-001) 2% cream is described and the literature reviewed. A scalable platform to synthesize ultrathin heavy metals may enable high-efficiency charge-to-spin conversion for next-generation spintronics. Here, we report the synthesis of air-stable, epitaxially registered monolayer Pb underneath graphene on SiC (0001) by confinement heteroepitaxy (CHet). Diffraction, spectroscopy, and microscopy reveal that CHet-based Pb intercalation predominantly exhibits a mottled hexagonal superstructure due to an ordered network of Frenkel-Kontorova-like domain walls. The system's air stability enables ex situ spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) measurements that demonstrate charge-to-spin conversion in graphene/Pb/ferromagnet heterostructures with a 1.5× increase in the effective field ratio compared to control samples.

The search for extraterrestrial extant or extinct life in our Solar System will require highly capable instrumentation and methods for detecting low concentrations of biosignatures. This paper introduces the Supercritical CO2 and Subcritical H2O Analysis (SCHAN) instrument, a portable and automated system that integrates supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), and subcritical water extraction coupled with liquid chromatography. The instrument is compact and weighs 6.3 kg, making it suitable for spaceflight missions to planetary bodies. Traditional techniques, such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (MS), face challenges with involatile and thermally labile analytes, necessitating derivatization. The SCHAN instrument, however, eliminates the need for derivatization and cosolvents by utilizing neat supercritical CO2 with water as an additive. This SFE-SFC-MS method gives efficient lipid biosignature separations with median detection limits of 10 pg/g (ppt) for fatty acids and 50 pg/g (ppt) for sterols. Several free fatty acids and cholesterol were among the detected peaks in biologically lean samples from the Atacama Desert, demonstrating the instrument's potential for in situ life detection missions. The SCHAN instrument addresses the challenges of conventional systems, offering a compact, portable, and spaceflight-compatible tool for the analysis of organics for future astrobiology-focused missions.

BACKGROUND: UV-A radiation contributes to photoaging/photocarcinogenesis by generating inflammation and oxidative damage. Current photoprotective strategies are limited by the availability/utilization of UV-A filters, highlighting an unmet need. Cannabidiol (CBD), having anti-inflammatory/antioxidant properties via regulation of nuclear erythroid 2-related factor, heme oxygenase 1, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, could potentially mitigate damage from UV-A exposure. OBJECTIVE/METHODS: This is a prospective, single-center, pilot clinical trial (NCT05279495). Nineteen participants applied nano-CBD (nCBD) or vehicle (VC) cream to randomized, blinded buttock sites twice daily for 14 days; then, the treated sites were irradiated with ≤3× UV-A minimal erythema dose. After 24 hours, punch biopsies were obtained for histology, immunohistochemistry, and real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: At 24 hours, 21% of participants had less observed erythema on CBD-treated skin than on VC skin. Histologically, nCBD-treated skin had reduced UV-A-induced epidermal hyperplasia than VC (P = .01). Immunohistochemistry detected reduced cytoplasmic/nuclear 8-oxoguanine glycosylase 1 staining in nCBD-treated skin compared with VC (P < .01). Quantitative mtDNA polymerase chain reaction demonstrated that UV-A-induced deletion of ND4 (proxy:4977 bp deletion; P = .003) and ND1 (proxy:3895 bp deletion; P = .002) was significantly reduced by in vivo nCBD treatment compared with VC. LIMITATIONS: Small sample size is this study's limitation. CONCLUSION: Topically applied nCBD cream reduced UV-A-induced formation of a frequent mutagenic nuclear DNA base lesion and protected against mtDNA mutations associated with UV-A-induced skin aging. To our knowledge, this trial is the first to identify UV-protective capacity of CBD-containing topicals in humans.

Introduction For peripheral nerve blocks, using either the liposomal formulation of bupivacaine or plain bupivacaine with epinephrine and dexamethasone as an adjuvant has been shown to improve postoperative pain scores. In a single-blinded, randomized controlled study of patients undergoing robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, we determined if bupivacaine with epinephrine and dexamethasone was noninferior to liposomal bupivacaine mixed with plain bupivacaine when administered intraoperatively as an intercostal nerve block (INB). Methods A total of 34 patients undergoing robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery were randomized to receive one of two injectate mixtures during their intraoperative INB. Group LB was administered 266 mg of 13.3 mg/mL liposomal bupivacaine with 24 mL of 0.5% plain bupivacaine, while Group BD was given 42 mL of 0.5% bupivacaine with epinephrine and 8 mg of dexamethasone. The primary outcomes were mean postoperative numerical pain ratings and mean postoperative opioid analgesic requirements. Secondary outcomes included adjuvant pain medication consumption, hospital length of stay, and total opioid use in oral morphine equivalents. Results Group LB exhibited no significant difference in pain scores (p = 0.437) and opioid analgesic requirement (p = 0.095) within the 72-hour postoperative period when compared to Group BD. The median total postoperative opioid requirement was 90 mg in Group LB, compared to 45 mg in Group BD. There were no significant differences in the use of postoperative adjuvant pain medications (gabapentin, p = 0.833; acetaminophen, p = 0.190; ketorolac, p = 0.699). Hospital length of stay did not differ between the groups. Conclusions INBs with the addition of dexamethasone as an adjuvant to 0.5% bupivacaine with epinephrine provided noninferior postoperative analgesia compared to liposomal bupivacaine mixed with plain 0.5% bupivacaine.
