RESUMO

Adiabatic processes can keep the quantum system in its instantaneous eigenstate, which is robust to noises and dissipation. However, it is limited by sufficiently slow evolution. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the transitionless quantum driving (TLQD) of the shortcuts to adiabaticity in gate-defined semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) to greatly accelerate the conventional adiabatic passage for the first time. For a given efficiency of quantum state transfer, the acceleration can be more than twofold. The dynamic properties also prove that the TLQD can guarantee fast and high-fidelity quantum state transfer. In order to compensate for the diabatic errors caused by dephasing noises, the modified TLQD is proposed and demonstrated in experiment by enlarging the width of the counterdiabatic drivings. The benchmarking shows that the state transfer fidelity of 97.8% can be achieved. This work will greatly promote researches and applications about quantum simulations and adiabatic quantum computation based on the gate-defined QDs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: No consensus exists regarding the examination methods and assessment criteria for awake bruxism (AB). In this study, masticatory muscle activity measured using electromyography (EMG) was recorded simultaneously with the ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of bruxism events. Data were collected to identify distinctive EMG parameters in AB. METHODS: A total of 104 individuals were classified into the bruxism (BR) or control (CO) groups based on clinical findings. The participants recorded EMA on a tablet device under continuous EMG recording using a data log-type wireless EMG device. For EMA recording, a warning was randomly provided three times each hour for five hours. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was obtained based on EMA and EMG events. Maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) at the time of maximum bite force was set at 100%. The muscle activity was assessed as a relative value. RESULTS: Based on discriminant analysis, analysis of participants who had four or more positive clenching EMA responses was appropriate. The assessed parameters for the EMG cutoff value determination procedure, which combined EMG and EMA, resulted in a cutoff value that enabled the distinction between the BR and CO groups. The area under the ROC curve was 0.77 and the cut-off value was 3.2 events/hour under the EMG of 20% MVC with a duration of ≥1 s. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to report a combined analysis of the EMA and EMG. These results suggest its effectiveness as a cutoff value for AB screening.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the effect of low-temperature degradation (LTD) on the mechanical properties of additive-manufactured zirconia. In addition, the mechanical properties of additive-manufactured were compared with those before aging under similar experimental conditions. This study prepared stereolithography apparatus fabricated zirconia specimens with flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness. The specimen position data were set as parallel (0°), diagonal (45°), and perpendicular (90°) to the direction of the building. The LTD condition was 5 h under 134ºC and 0.2 MPa in an autoclave. It was found that the 0° direction differed significantly from all other conditions before and after aging, and the highest flexural strength was obtained when the additive specimen was manufactured perpendicular to the building direction. However, the results indicate that there is a negligible effect of aging on the mechanical properties of additive-manufactured zirconia.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the occlusal reproductive trueness of zirconia crowns fabricated using additive manufacturing (AM) and to compare the surface roughness of crowns fabricated using AM and conventional milling (CM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Crowns were manufactured using AM and CM on abutments with total occlusal convergence angles of 16 and 20 degrees. RESULTS: The surface roughness of the AM crowns was less than that of the CM crowns. The differences in reproduction of the occlusal morphology of the abutment crown were greater at 16 degrees than at 20 degrees. CONCLUSION: AM could be an effective method for manufacturing zirconia crowns.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the tooth portion evaluated and the colors of the abutment tooth and resin luting agent on the final color of monolithic zirconia crowns. METHODS: Monolithic zirconia crowns were fabricated for left maxillary central incisors using two shades (A2 and A3) of highly translucent monolithic zirconia disks. A model of the abutment tooth was fabricated using resin core materials (white: W; dentin: D). The color of the crowns was measured with try-in pastes (clear: C; brown: B) as a resin-luting agent substitute. The measurement was performed after placing the crown on the model with the attached abutment tooth with try-in paste. The color of three labial portions (cervical, body, and incisal) was evaluated using a dental spectrophotometer. The color difference (ΔE) between the CIELab values of the zirconia disks and the final measurement of zirconia crowns was calculated. RESULTS: The ΔE between the crown of the A2 shade and the zirconia disk of the A2 shade had the highest ΔE value in the body portion with W-B (ΔE=3.92). Similarly, the A3 shade had the highest ΔE value in the cervical portion, with W-B (ΔE=4.27). The results of three-way ANOVA showed that the ΔE values were influenced by the tooth portion evaluated and the color of the abutment tooth. CONCLUSION: The final color of the monolithic zirconia crowns was significantly influenced by the tooth portion evaluated and the color of the abutment tooth.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is the most advanced stage of peripheral artery disease. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to avoid major amputation in CLTI patients. Malnutrition worsens the condition of CLTI patients, and therefore, it may be important to evaluate the nutritional status in patients with CLTI. This study was designed to evaluate the baseline patient characteristics and the influence of the controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score on the clinical results. METHOD AND RESULTS: A retrospective, single-center, non-randomized study was conducted to evaluate the associations of death, major amputation, and wound healing rate at 12 months with the CONUT score on admission. Consecutive CLTI patients (mean age 73.2 ± 10.4 years; 84 males) who underwent endovascular therapy (EVT) for infra-popliteal lesions at Fukuoka University Hospital from January 2014 to May 2019 were enrolled and divided into two groups (higher and lower CONUT score groups). The higher CONUT group showed a higher percentage of dialysis (66.7% vs. 33.9%, p < 0.001) and a higher clinical frailty scale (5.9 ± 1.4 vs. 4.9 ± 1.9, p = 0.005) than the lower CONUT group. Rates of amputation-free survival were 89.5% and 69.8% in the lower and higher CONUT groups, respectively. In addition, rates of wound healing at 12 months were 98.0% and 78.3% in the lower and higher CONUT groups, respectively. Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that a higher CONUT score was an independent predictor for delayed wound healing (OR: 11.2; 95% CI: 1.29-97.5; p = 0.028). CONCLUSION: An assessment of the nutritional status using the CONUT score could be useful for predicting wound healing, and earlier nutritional intervention may improve the outcome of CLTI patients. Early examination and treatment, along with raising awareness of the issue, may be important for improving the prognosis.

RESUMO

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has recently been recognized as a cardiovascular regulator particularly in the diseased condition, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and hypertension. Here, we investigate the role of BDNF on the T-type Ca2+ channel, Cav3.1 and Cav3.2, in rat neonatal cardiomyocytes exposed to normoxia (21% O2) and acute hypoxia (1% O2) in vitro for up to 3 h. The exposure of cardiomyocytes to hypoxia (1 h, 3 h) caused a significant upregulation of the mRNAs for hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (Hif1α), Cav3.1, Cav3.2 and Bdnf, but not tropomyosin-related kinase receptor B (TrkB). The upregulation of Cav3.1 and Cav3.2 caused by hypoxia was completely halted by small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting Hif1a (Hif1a-siRNA) or Bdnf (Bdnf-siRNA). Immunocytochemical staining data revealed a distinct upregulation of Cav3.1- and Cav3.2-proteins caused by hypoxia in cardiomyocytes, which was markedly suppressed by Bdnf-siRNA. These results unveiled a novel regulatory action of BDNF on the T-type Ca2+ channels expression through the HIF-1α-dependent pathway in cardiomyocytes.

RESUMO

Gate-defined quantum dots (QDs) are such a highly-tunable quantum system in which single spins can be electrically coupled, manipulated, and measured. However, the spins in gate-defined QDs are lacking its interface to free-space photons. Here, we verify that a circularly-polarized single photon can excite a single electron spin via the transfer of angular momentum, measured using Pauli spin blockade (PSB) in a double QD. We monitor the inter-dot charge tunneling which only occur when the photo-electron spin in one QD is anti-parallel to the electron spin in the other. This allows us to detect single photo-electrons in the spin-up/down basis using PSB. The photon polarization dependence of the excited spin state was finally confirmed for the heavy-hole exciton excitation. The angular momentum transfer observed here is a fundamental step providing a route to instant injection of spins, distributing single spin information, and possibly towards extending quantum communication.

RESUMO

Quantum entanglement between different forms of qubits is an indication of the universality of quantum mechanics. Entanglement transfer between light and matter, especially photon and spin, has long been studied as the central concept, but it remains technically challenging for single photons and spins. In this paper, we show paired generation of a single electron in a GaAs quantum dot and a single photon from a single polarization-entangled photon pair. We measure temporal coincidence between the single photo-electron detection and the single photon detection. Considering a single photon polarization is converted to an electron spin via an optical selection rule, the present result indicates the capability of photon to spin entanglement transfer. This may be useful to explore the physics of entanglement transfer and also for applications to quantum teleportation based quantum communication.

RESUMO

Coherent interactions at a distance provide a powerful tool for quantum simulation and computation. The most common approach to realize an effective long-distance coupling 'on-chip' is to use a quantum mediator, as has been demonstrated for superconducting qubits and trapped ions. For quantum dot arrays, which combine a high degree of tunability with extremely long coherence times, the experimental demonstration of the time evolution of coherent spin-spin coupling via an intermediary system remains an important outstanding goal. Here, we use a linear triple-quantum-dot array to demonstrate a coherent time evolution of two interacting distant spins via a quantum mediator. The two outer dots are occupied with a single electron spin each, and the spins experience a superexchange interaction through the empty middle dot, which acts as mediator. Using single-shot spin readout, we measure the coherent time evolution of the spin states on the outer dots and observe a characteristic dependence of the exchange frequency as a function of the detuning between the middle and outer dots. This approach may provide a new route for scaling up spin qubit circuits using quantum dots, and aid in the simulation of materials and molecules with non-nearest-neighbour couplings such as MnO (ref. 27), high-temperature superconductors and DNA. The same superexchange concept can also be applied in cold atom experiments.

RESUMO

This work focused on ultrasound assisted extraction and decomposition of MCPA [(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) acetic acid] from model soil under argon atmosphere. In the experiments, 10 g model soil containing 1.75 x 10(-5) mol MCPA mixed with 90 g of de-aired water was used. For a comparison, the experiments were also carried out using MCPA aqueous solution of which the concentration was adjusted to 1.75 x 10(-4) mol/l. The results showed that complete MCPA decomposition was achieved after 120 min in the case of MCPA aqueous solution. Meanwhile, in the case of model soil, the MCPA decomposition ratio of 0.9 was obtained after 600 min. This result was attributed to combined effect of MCPA adsorption on kaolin and to attenuation of ultrasound by solid particles of kaolin. To evaluate ultrasound attenuation in the presence of solid particles, experiments with slurry consisting of alumina particles and MCPA solution were carried out at alumina particles concentration range of 0.1-100g/l. The results showed that the MCPA initial decomposition rate significantly decreased with an increase in alumina particles concentration. Thus, it was concluded that the solid particles reduced the MCPA decomposition ratio by reducing the formation of reactive species such as hydroxyl radicals which are know to be necessary for MCPA decomposition.

RESUMO

This study investigates the use of ultrasonication as a pretreatment process and its effect on the adsorption characteristics of saccharin onto activated carbon (AC). Ultrasonic decomposition of saccharin was performed at a frequency of 500 kHz under argon and O2/N2 (20/80 vol%) atmospheres. Adsorption was carried out using a commercial activated carbon. The behavior of total organic carbon (TOC) during ultrasonication was investigated. Saccharin removal after 180 min of ultrasonication under Ar and O2/N2 atmospheres are 38% and 26%, respectively, while the amount of saccharin removed by activated carbon adsorption without US pretreatment is 40% after 16 h. After 16 h of AC adsorption with 180 min of ultrasonic pretreatment under Ar and O2/N2 atmospheres, both removal ratios increased to 75%. These results indicated that the pretreatment of sonication under O2/N2 leads to the increase in the amount of saccharin adsorbed on AC. On the other hand, the TOC removal by decomposition by ultrasound is not more than 5% in both Ar and O2/N2 atmospheres after 180 min ultrasonication. However, the TOC removal increased to 54% and 69% after 16 h of adsorption of saccharin pretreated by ultrasonication for 180 min under Ar and O2/N2 atmospheres, respectively. About 13% and 16% TOC removal in Ar and in O2/N2, respectively, were achieved due to adsorption of the by-products. It is considered that the improvement in TOC removal is also brought about by the formation of the by-products that were adsorbed onto AC.

RESUMO

Sonochemical degradation of MCPA ((4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) acetic acid) in dilute aqueous solutions was studied using ultrasound with a frequency of 500 kHz. The effect of gas atmosphere on MCPA degradation was investigated in nitrogen (N(2)), air (O(2)/N(2)), oxygen (O(2)), argon (Ar) and Ar/O(2) (60/40% v/v) atmospheres. For sonochemical degradation of MCPA in N(2), air (O(2)/N(2)), O(2) and Ar atmospheres, the rate enhancement of MCPA decomposition by sonolysis was found to be more effective in an O(2)-enriched atmosphere compared to Ar atmosphere. It was considered that a higher amount of oxidants was formed in a higher O(2) partial pressure, which accelerated MCPA decomposition in a radical reaction system. On the other hand, both dechlorination and total organic carbon (TOC) removal rates were higher in Ar atmosphere, compared to those in O(2)/N(2) atmosphere. It was found that, MCPA was most effectively decomposed by sonication in Ar/O(2) (60/40% v/v) atmosphere, with higher rates of decomposition, dechlorination and TOC removal.
