INTRODUCTION: The practice of dentistry benefits greatly from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and advantages should be prioritized over hazards; even modest doses of X-rays have the potential to have cytotoxic effects, damage DNA through their clastogenic impact, and stimulate the creation of micronuclei along with further nuclear changes. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To assess the genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of X-rays in exfoliated oral mucosal cells from patients who underwent CBCT scans at different fields of view (FOV), and to examine and assess the extent of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity caused by X-rays in oral exfoliated cells of people who were subjected to CBCT at different fields of view (FOV). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Following CBCT exposure, 66 patients were chosen from the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology at the SVS Institute of Dental Sciences, Mahbubnagar. Cells from the buccal mucosa were then extracted using the exfoliative cytology method, and the samples were examined under a microscope to look for nuclear and cytological abnormalities. RESULTS: A paired t-test analysis revealed that mean micronuclei increased significantly in each study group from before to after exposure. It increased in Group I from 93.59 to 96.05, in Group II from 83.27 to 91.86, and in Group III from 86.05 to 97.00. Various test analyses revealed an important relation between exposure status and the presence of karyorrhexis in Group III. There was no association in other groups. CONCLUSION: The study revealed a significant increase of micronuclei in subjects after exposure to radiation at various FOVs. There was an increased karyorrhexis following radiation exposure in all groups at various FOVs. The significant association between exposure and karyorrhexis in the larger size FOV group was noticed further potentiating the extent of increased damage as the size of FOV is increased.

Nasopalatine duct cyst, which is also known as incisive canal cyst, is the most common developmental cyst of the maxilla. It arises from the proliferation of the remnants of the nasopalatine duct stimulated by trauma or infection. In this article, the authors report a rare case of an extensive nasopalatine duct cyst in a 57-year-old Male associated with non-vital tooth. Clinical examination revealed facial asymmetry associated with swelling that is painful and tender. Correlating clinical and radiological findings, a diagnosis of nasopalatine duct cyst was formed, and the histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of nasopalatine duct cyst. This case highlights the importance of knowing that nasopalatine duct cyst can be associated with non-vital teeth, challenging the assumption that they are exclusively associated with vital teeth. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pain is the primary reason dental patients seek endodontic therapy. Post-treatment endodontic discomfort is a sequelae of periapical inflammation and anti-inflammatory drugs such as corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) would be reasonable therapy options. The purpose of this study was to compare and assess the efficacy of intramuscular injections of dexamethasone and ketorolac tromethamine versus placebo in reducing post-treatment endodontic pain in individuals undergoing root canal treatment. METHODOLOGY: Patients diagnosed with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis were selected. Nonsurgical endodontic therapy was carried out in a single visit. After completion of the root canal therapy, the patients were randomly assigned to one of the three groups for intramuscular drug administration. In group 1, 2 ml of sterile saline was administered, in group 2, 1 ml of 4 mg dexamethasone was administered; and in group 3, 1 ml of 30 mg ketorolac tromethamine was administered. Preoperative and postoperative pain intensity was measured by a verbal rating scale. Postoperatively, the incidence and severity of pain were recorded after four, 24, and 48 hours. RESULTS: All three groups showed a highly statistically significant reduction in pain scores when compared to preoperative levels. At the end of four hours, dexamethasone and ketorolac tromethamine showed highly significant results. Dexamethasone significantly reduced pain after 24 hours when compared to ketorolac and placebo groups. At the conclusion of 48 hours, all three groups experienced a gradual decrease in pain levels. CONCLUSION: Effective and complete debridement of infected root canal system provides predictable gradual reduction of post-endodontic pain.

The use of conducting polymers in devices makes them desirable due to their allowance for the fabrication of flexible, lightweight, and potentially inexpensive devices. This review explores the synthetic strategies and characterizations of 3,6-substituted carbazole-based polymers, emphasizing the influence of these modifications on their electronic structure and absorption properties. Polymers containing carbazole substituents are widely studied due to their unique optical and electronic properties, high electron-donating ability, and photoconductivity. The structural adaptability of the carbazole with the 3,6-substitution makes it as an outstanding candidate for their integration into polymers and also possesses improved stability and triplet energy. The role of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) was highlighted by donor-acceptor architectures with tailoring energy levels to extract their advantageous physicochemical characteristics and optimized performances. Collectively, this comprehensive review delves into the burgeoning field of 3,6-substituted carbazole-based polymers and their crucial role in advancing optoelectronic applications. By amalgamating materials design, synthetic strategies, and application-driven insights, the review serves as a valuable resource for researchers to understand the structure-property relationships and foster innovative solutions for next-generation opto-electronic applications.

PURPOSE: Various medications are administered to treat Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and prevent its complications. Some medicines have complications and long-term effects, which may mimic other conditions, making precise diagnosis difficult. This report aims to bring to light one such complication, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), secondary to a commonly prescribed medication for preventing lung fibrosis post-COVID-19 infection. METHOD: A 33-year-old male reported to our department with the typical clinical and radiological features of Mucormycosis of the upper jaw post-COVID-19 infection. However, on detailed evaluation of his history (controlled diabetic and short duration of steroid therapy) and review of the mycology staining, bacteriology, culture, and histopathological reports, we came to a negative diagnosis for Mucormycosis. The patient was, however, on treatment for the prevention of lung fibrosis with Nintedanib (tyrosine kinase inhibitor) 150 mg twice a day for one month. RESULT: In the absence of predisposing factors and negative laboratory findings for mucormycosis, we arrived at a diagnosis of MRONJ, attributable to Nintedanib therapy given to prevent lung fibrosis post-COVID-19 infection. CONCLUSION: The use of Nintedanib has recently increased due to the high incidence of lung fibrosis post-COVID-19 infection. However, Nintedanib should be considered a causative agent for osteonecrosis of the jaw in the absence of other obvious predisposing factors. Therefore, Nintedanib must be administered after a thorough consideration of risk factors.

Background: Maxillofacial Injury (MFI) is a major public health concern that is multifactorial in etiology-road traffic accidents (RTAs), falls and violence. RTAs are the major cause of maxillofacial injuries (MFIs) in countries like India. Recent studies have shown that maxillofacial fractures (MFF) constitute a significant proportion of facial injuries seen in hospitals (56.5%). The incidence of maxillofacial fractures can vary depending on several factors, including age, gender, and environmental factors. Of particular concern is the impact of seasonal variations, such as the monsoon season, which lead to high incidence of maxillofacial fractures due to hazardous conditions. Methods: A retrospective review of medical records was done in a tertiary-care dental teaching hospital was done. Results: Data of 200 subjects including 154 males (77%) and 46 females (23%) with a mean age of 35.38 ± 16.541 years; age range: 1 - 80 years was analyzed. A total of 200 MFI's were recorded between 2021 and 2022. Soft tissue injuries were reported in 37.5% of the cases in non-monsoon season and 42.3% of the cases during the monsoon season. Dentoalveolar fractures were reported in 6.2% of the cases during the non-monsoon seasons and 7.7% during the monsoon season. In this study, mandible was the most fractured bone (n=104,52%) followed by zygomatic complex (n=50, 25%). The frequently observed pattern among mandibular fracture was condyle 8.3% during the non-monsoon season and 2.9% during the monsoon season). Conclusions: The results of the study indicate that mandibular fractures are most commonly seen in maxillofacial fractures, followed by fractures of the zygomatic complex. The study also reveals a higher incidence of soft tissue injuries and dentoalveolar fractures during the monsoon season. Further research is warranted to explore the factors that contribute to the seasonal variation in maxillofacial fractures for effective interventions to reduce their occurrence.

With the growing demand for minimally invasive dental restoration, conservative treatment options offer good aesthetic outcomes and durability with minimal tooth reduction. The use of ceramics in dental restoration has been on the rise in the past two decades due to its long-term benefits and capacity to produce a superior bond to tooth structure when used in conjunction with adhesive cement and acid-etch procedures. A ceramic onlay, which covers one or more cusps, also helps to preserve dental tissue. These materials enable the dentist to conservatively prepare the tooth for restoration while also strengthening the patient's own tooth structure. This case report discusses the preparation of a functional and aesthetic ceramic onlay for a patient with a cracked tooth.

Adverse drug associated mucocutaneous reactions having a preponderance to occur above 1% include urticaria, angioedema, photosensitivity, fixed drug eruptions and Erythema Multiforme (EM). EM is an acute inflammatory disease of the skin and mucous membranes that causes a variety of skin lesions-hence named 'multiforme'. The aetiological spectrum of EM is wide and is attributed to infectious agents, drugs and food additives. EM is diagnosed based on stringent clinical findings which are pathognomic as microscopic evaluation carries least significance. We report a case of a 38-year-old male who presented with a complaint of severe oral & cutaneous lesions making him difficult to eat & drink. History revealed the usage of clove to get rid of tooth pain following which he developed ulcers in the mouth which made him to visit a general physician where he was administered gentamycin. Later on oral lesions worsened along with the emergence of dermal lesions. In the present case, based on the patient history, clove was found to be a probable aetiological agent and the condition was further precipitated owing to the administration of gentamycin. The patient was successfully treated with corticosteroids adhering to systemic corticosteroid administrative protocols and no remissions and exacerbations were noticed in a year follow up.
