Kratom use is associated with cannabis use, so retail availability may also be related. Kratom and Delta-8 THC (a psychoactive cannabis product) are federally unregulated, marketed as "natural," and often used for pain relief and/or relaxation. Kratom may have greater retail availability in more socioeconomically deprived areas because harmful substances are frequently marketed to lower-income communities. This study examined kratom retail availability in Fort Worth, Texas. Locations with alcohol, tobacco, and/or CBD licenses were called in July 2022: 1,025/1,223 (84%) answered the phone. T-tests examined potential differences in socioeconomic deprivation scores surrounding outlets by whether they sold kratom. Cross-tabulations examined overlap in kratom and Delta-8 THC availability. Kratom was available in 6% of locations. Most kratom retailers had a tobacco license (92%). However, most stores with a tobacco license did not sell kratom (14%), whereas most stores with a CBD license did (55%). Kratom availability was not associated with area deprivation scores. Most kratom retailers (95%) sold Delta-8 THC and two-thirds (65%) of Delta-8 THC retailers sold kratom. This study was the first to examine retail availability of kratom. Findings indicate the presence of niche stores specializing in the retail of federally unregulated substances.

A frit is a glassy ceramic composition that has been fused, quenched, and granulated. A single frit or a mixture of frits and ceramic materials forms a ceramic glaze. The purpose of this pre-fusion is to render any soluble and/or toxic components insoluble by rendering it inert in a glassy composition with silica and other added oxides. The ceramic glaze dispersed in water (ceramic slip) is deposited on a ceramic body and fired for waterproofing and aesthetic purposes. Multicomponent frits (zinc-potassium borosilicate system) with similar behavior to conventional ceramic frits for single-firing ceramic glazes ("monoporosa" glazes fired at 1080 °C) were prepared by Sol-Gel methods (monophasic and polyphasic gels) avoiding the pre-fusion and characterized as photocatalytic agents (showing high degradation activity on Orange II). The effect of doping with bandgap modifiers (V2O5, Sb2O5 and SnO2) and also with devitrification agents (ZrO2 to crystallize zircon, Al2O3 to anorthite, Mo2O3 to powellite and ZnO to gahnite ZnAl2O4) were analyzed. Multicomponent frits (zinc-potassium borosilicate system) with similar behavior to conventional ceramic frits for single-firing glazes (1080 °C) prepared by Sol-Gel methods (monophasic and polyphasic gels), without pre-fusion, shows photocatalytic activity.

ZnO nanoparticles (NPS) with different morphologies were synthesized, and the antibacterial and anticancer activity was studied, herein. The physicochemical characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-visible. To study the antibacterial and anticancer capability of ZnO NPS, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria and HeLa cancer cells were exposed at different doses of ZnO NPS (7-250 µg/mL). TEM analysis confirmed the obtention of spherical, hexagonal and rod ZnO NPS with an average diameter of 20 ± 4 nm, 1.17 ± 0.3 µm and 1.11 ± 1.2 µm, respectively. XRD diffractograms showed the characteristic pattern of crystalline ZnO in wurtzite phase. FTIR and UV-vis spectra showed slight differences of the main absorption peaks, revealing that different ZnO NPS morphologies may cause shifts in spectra. Biological essays showed that the number of E. coli and S. aureus bacteria as well as HeLa cells decreases linearly by increasing the nanoparticle concentration. However, the best anticancer and antibacterial activity was shown by spherical ZnO NPS at 100 µg/mL. The better capability of spherical ZnO NPS than hexagonal and rod ZnO NPS is related with its small particle size. The present results suggest that the spherical ZnO NPS has a great potential as an antibacterial and anticancer agent.

Resumen Se describe el proceso para obtener un adhesivo sensible a la presión (PSA). Este PSA está formado por un copolímero de acrilato de 2-etilhexil (2-EHA) / metacrilato de metilo (MMA) en una relación 80:20 que se polimerizó mediante una técnica de polimerización en emulsión. Se añadieron nanopartículas de óxido de zinc (NPZnO) a este copolímero, que se sintetizaron previamente y se modificaron superficialmente con 3-aminopropil-3-toxisilano (APTES) y dimetilsulfóxido (DMSO) para mejorar su dispersión en la matriz de copolímero. Los nanocompuestos obtenidos se caracterizaron por espectroscopía infrarroja (FTIR), calorimetría diferencial de barrido (DSC) y pruebas de adhesión al delaminado. Además, se determinó la actividad antimicrobiana contra S. aureus y S. pyogenes, así como la citotoxicidad en células humanas (HeLa). Los resultados demostraron que la adición de las nanopartículas de NPZnO al copolímero incrementa la temperatura de transición vítrea (Tg) así como las propiedades antimicrobianas del adhesivo mejorando a su vez su adhesión superficial. Con respecto al comportamiento adhesivo, el PSA con NPZnO sin modificar mostró una mayor resistencia al delaminado, esto quiere decir que las nanopartículas incrementan la fuerza cohesiva y proporcionan resistencia a temperaturas elevadas, lo cual sería beneficioso a su aplicación final. Finalmente, los resultados de citotoxicidad mostraron que la incorporación de NPZnO al PSA disminuye la viabilidad celular, sin embargo no se considera tóxico acorde a la norma ISO 10993 test for in vitro cytotoxicity.


Abstract The process for obtaining a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) is described. This PSA is formed by an acrylate copolymer of 2-ethylhexyl (2-EHA) / methyl methacrylate (MMA) in an 80:20 ratio which was polymerized by emulsion polymerization technique. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPZnO) were added to this copolymer, which were previously synthesized, and surface modified with 3-aminopropyltretoxysilane (APTES) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to improve its dispersion in the copolymer matrix. The obtained nanocomposites were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and T-peel adhesion tests. In addition, the antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and S. pyogenes as well as the cytotoxicity in human cells (HeLa) were determined. The results demonstrated that the ZnO nanoparticles incorporation enhanced the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the antimicrobial activity of PSA copolymer as well as its surface adhesion. It was confirmed that NPZnO modification with APTES increased its antimicrobial activity. Regarding adhesive behavior, PSA with unmodified NPZnO showed a greater peel resistance. This indicates that these nanoparticles enhances the cohesive force and induces a better high temperature performance, which is beneficial for the final application. Finally, cytotoxicity results showed that the incorporation of NPZnO to PSA decreases the cell viability, however this PSA is not toxic according to the standard ISO 10993 test for in vitro cytotoxicity.

Final-state kinematic imbalances are measured in mesonless production of ν_{µ}+A→µ^{-}+p+X in the MINERvA tracker. Initial- and final-state nuclear effects are probed using the direction of the µ^{-}-p transverse momentum imbalance and the initial-state momentum of the struck neutron. Differential cross sections are compared to predictions based on current approaches to medium modeling. These models underpredict the cross section at intermediate intranuclear momentum transfers that generally exceed the Fermi momenta. As neutrino interaction models need to correctly incorporate the effect of the nucleus in order to predict neutrino energy resolution in oscillation experiments, this result points to a region of phase space where additional cross section strength is needed in current models, and demonstrates a new technique that would be suitable for use in fine-grained liquid argon detectors where the effect of the nucleus may be even larger.

Charged-current ν_{µ} interactions on carbon, iron, and lead with a final state hadronic system of one or more protons with zero mesons are used to investigate the influence of the nuclear environment on quasielasticlike interactions. The transferred four-momentum squared to the target nucleus, Q^{2}, is reconstructed based on the kinematics of the leading proton, and differential cross sections versus Q^{2} and the cross-section ratios of iron, lead, and carbon to scintillator are measured for the first time in a single experiment. The measurements show a dependence on the atomic number. While the quasielasticlike scattering on carbon is compatible with predictions, the trends exhibited by scattering on iron and lead favor a prediction with intranuclear rescattering of hadrons accounted for by a conventional particle cascade treatment. These measurements help discriminate between different models of both initial state nucleons and final state interactions used in the neutrino oscillation experiments.

Neutral-current production of K^{+} by atmospheric neutrinos is a background in searches for the proton decay p→K^{+}ν[over ¯]. Reactions such as νp→νK^{+}Λ are indistinguishable from proton decays when the decay products of the Λ are below detection threshold. Events with K^{+} are identified in MINERvA by reconstructing the timing signature of a K^{+} decay at rest. A sample of 201 neutrino-induced neutral-current K^{+} events is used to measure differential cross sections with respect to the K^{+} kinetic energy, and the non-K^{+} hadronic visible energy. An excess of events at low hadronic visible energy is observed relative to the prediction of the neut event generator. Good agreement is observed with the cross section prediction of the genie generator. A search for photons from π^{0} decay, which would veto a neutral-current K^{+} event in a proton decay search, is performed, and a 2σ deficit of detached photons is observed relative to the genie prediction.

RESUMEN: El presente trabajo describe la preparación de nanocompositos formulados a partir de quitosano (QS)/nanopartículas de cobre (nCu) con características antibacterianas y aplicación potencial en ingeniería de tejidos. Para ello, se prepararon nanocompositos mediante mezclado en solución asistido con ultrasonido con el objetivo de incrementar la dispersión de la carga nanométrica en el biopolímero. El análisis de FTIR demostró que la presencia de nCu en la matriz de QS favorece la interacción del nCu con los grupos amino/hidroxilo de la molécula del QS. Se determinó mediante UV-Vis que los nanocompositos QS/nCu presentan absorción asociada con la presencia de nanopartículas y la posible liberación de iones Cu2+ en medio líquido. Mediante AFM se determinó que el QS hidratado forma una malla con microporos, que puede favorecer la penetración de bacterias en el nanocomposito y su interacción con las nCu. Finalmente, se determinó el efecto antibacteriano del material al contacto con la bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, en donde se presenta una actividad antibacteriana superior al 90% entre los 90 y 180 min de interacción. Dichos resultados sugieren que es posible obtener nanomateriales antibacterianos biocompatibles para su posible aplicación en ingeniería tisular.


ABSTRACT: The Present work describes the preparation of nanocomposites based on chitosan (QS)/copper nanoparticles (nCu) with antibacterial properties and potential application in tissue engineering. For this purpose, nanocomposites were prepared by solution blending with ultrasound assisted, aiming to increase the nanoparticles dispersion in the biopolymer. FTIR analyses demonstrates that nCu supported in QS increase their interaction of nanoparticles with amine/hydroxyl groups of QS molecule. UV-Vis analyses demonstrates that QS/nCu nanocomposites have an absorption signal associated with the presence of nanoparticles and the possible Cu2+ ions release in liquid media. AFM analyses shown that hydrated QS form a mesh with micro pores, improving the bacterial penetration and the direct contact with nCu. This behavior was corroborated by antibacterial assays, where QS/nCu nanocomposites shown an antibacterial activity higher than 90% between 90-180 minutes of interaction. Our results suggest that is possible to obtain combined antibacterial/biocompatible nanomaterials with potential application in tissue engineering.

RESUMO

The MINERvA experiment observes an excess of events containing electromagnetic showers relative to the expectation from Monte Carlo simulations in neutral-current neutrino interactions with mean beam energy of 4.5 GeV on a hydrocarbon target. The excess is characterized and found to be consistent with neutral-current π^{0} production with a broad energy distribution peaking at 7 GeV and a total cross section of 0.26±0.02(stat.)±0.08(sys.)×10^{-39} cm^{2}. The angular distribution, electromagnetic shower energy, and spatial distribution of the energy depositions of the excess are consistent with expectations from neutrino neutral-current diffractive π^{0} production from hydrogen in the hydrocarbon target. These data comprise the first direct experimental observation and constraint for a reaction that poses an important background process in neutrino-oscillation experiments searching for ν_{µ} to ν_{e} oscillations.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) have received considerable attention in the medical field because of their antibacterial properties, primarily for killing and reducing the activity of numerous microorganisms. The purpose of this study was to determine whether surface-modified ZnO NPs exhibit different properties compared with unmodified ZnO. The antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties of modified ZnO NPs as well as their effects on inflammatory cytokine production were evaluated. ZnO NPs were prepared using a wet chemical method. Then, the surfaces of these NPs were modified using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as modifying agents via a chemical hydrolysis method. According to infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR), the structure of the ZnO remained unchanged after modification. Antibacterial assays demonstrated that APTES modification is more effective at inducing an antimicrobial effect against Gram-negative bacteria than against Gram-positive bacteria. Cytotoxicity studies showed that cell viability was dose-dependent; moreover, pristine and APTES-modified ZnO exhibited low cytotoxicity, whereas DMSO-modified ZnO exhibited toxicity even at a low NP concentration. An investigation of inflammatory cytokine production demonstrated that the extent of stimulation was related to the ZnO NP concentration but not to the surface modification, except for IFN-γ and IL-10, which were not detected even at high NP concentrations.

Neutrino-induced charged-current coherent kaon production ν_{µ}A→µ^{-}K^{+}A is a rare, inelastic electroweak process that brings a K^{+} on shell and leaves the target nucleus intact in its ground state. This process is significantly lower in rate than the neutrino-induced charged-current coherent pion production because of Cabibbo suppression and a kinematic suppression due to the larger kaon mass. We search for such events in the scintillator tracker of MINERvA by observing the final state K^{+}, µ^{-}, and no other detector activity, and by using the kinematics of the final state particles to reconstruct the small momentum transfer to the nucleus, which is a model-independent characteristic of coherent scattering. We find the first experimental evidence for the process at 3σ significance.

Two different nuclear-medium effects are isolated using a low three-momentum transfer subsample of neutrino-carbon scattering data from the MINERvA neutrino experiment. The observed hadronic energy in charged-current ν_{µ} interactions is combined with muon kinematics to permit separation of the quasielastic and Δ(1232) resonance processes. First, we observe a small cross section at very low energy transfer that matches the expected screening effect of long-range nucleon correlations. Second, additions to the event rate in the kinematic region between the quasielastic and Δ resonance processes are needed to describe the data. The data in this kinematic region also have an enhanced population of multiproton final states. Contributions predicted for scattering from a nucleon pair have both properties; the model tested in this analysis is a significant improvement but does not fully describe the data. We present the results as a double-differential cross section to enable further investigation of nuclear models. Improved description of the effects of the nuclear environment are required by current and future neutrino oscillation experiments.

The first direct measurement of electron neutrino quasielastic and quasielasticlike scattering on hydrocarbon in the few-GeV region of incident neutrino energy has been carried out using the MINERvA detector in the NuMI beam at Fermilab. The flux-integrated differential cross sections in the electron production angle, electron energy, and Q^{2} are presented. The ratio of the quasielastic, flux-integrated differential cross section in Q^{2} for ν_{e} with that of similarly selected ν_{µ}-induced events from the same exposure is used to probe assumptions that underpin conventional treatments of charged-current ν_{e} interactions used by long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. The data are found to be consistent with lepton universality and are well described by the predictions of the neutrino event generator GENIE.

Introduction: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is nowadays the standard treatment for a subgroup of early gastric cancer with low risk of lymph node metastasis. This procedure has the advantage of achieving a higher percentage of negative margins and of allowing resections of larger tumors compared with the endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) method, being less invasive compared with surgery. Aim: To analyze the postoperative outcomes, histology and overall survival of patients undergoing ESD in our center. Methods: Descriptive study. Data were collected from clinical records of patients undergoing ESD from January 2008 to June 2012. Results: 15 patients (8 males and 7 females, median age 70 years (45-88)) were included. The tumor was located at upper, middle and lower third in 2, 5 and 8 patients, respectively. Median tumor size was 13.5 mm (6-21). Most tumors were classified as type IIc. Among postoperative complications, there was 1 gastric bleeding and 3 gastric perforations. Hospital stay was 3 days (1-23). There was no mortality. There was one case of submucosal invasion. Negative margins were achieved in 86.7 percent. There was one deep and one lateral positive margin, managed by surgery and re-ESD, respectively. At 16 months (7-61) of median follow-up, overall survival was 100 percent. Tumor recurrence was observed in one patient at 51 months, was treated by surgery. Conclusion: ESD is a feasible technique in the minimally invasive management of early gastric cancer, allowing a high percentage of negative margins.


Introducción: La disección endoscópica de la submucosa (DES) es actualmente el tratamiento estándar en pacientes con cáncer gástrico incipiente y bajo riesgo de metástasis ganglionares, con la ventaja de obtener un mayor porcentaje de márgenes negativos que en la mucosectomía y ser menos invasivo que la cirugía. Objetivo: Analizar los resultados inmediatos, anatomía patológica y sobrevida alejada de los pacientes sometidos a DES en nuestro centro. Métodos: Estudio descriptivo. Revisión de los registros clínicos de pacientes con lesiones gástricas incipientes sometidos a DES entre enero de 2008 y junio de 2012. Resultados: Serie compuesta por 15 pacientes, 8 de sexo masculino. Mediana de edad 70 años (45-88). Ubicación tumoral: tercio superior en 2, tercio medio en 5 y tercio inferior en 8. La mediana de tamaño tumoral fue 13,5 mm (6-21). La mayoría fueron lesiones IIc. Dentro de las complicaciones postoperatorias, hubo 1 hemorragia digestiva tratada por endoscopia y 3 perforaciones gástricas tratadas quirúrgicamente (gastrorrafia). Mediana de hospitalización, 3 días (1-23). No se registró mortalidad post-procedimiento. Se obtuvieron bordes negativos en un 86,7 por ciento de los casos. Un paciente presentó margen profundo positivo, tratado mediante gastrectomía subtotal y otro presentó positividad en un margen lateral, manejado con una nueva DES. Mediana de seguimiento 16 meses (7-61), sin fallecidos por patología tumoral. Hubo 1 recurrencia tumoral (51 meses), tratada quirúrgicamente. Conclusión: La DES representa una alternativa en el manejo de las lesiones gástricas incipientes, permitiendo un alto porcentaje de márgenes negativos.

Nowadays, with the increase of elderly population and related health problems, knee and hip joint prosthesis are being widely used worldwide. However, failure of these invasive devices occurs in a high percentage thus demanding the revision of the chirurgical procedure. Within the reasons of failure, microbial infections, either hospital or subsequently-acquired, contribute in high number to the statistics. Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) has emerged as one of the major nosocomial pathogens associated with these infections. Silver has a historic performance in medicine due to its potent antimicrobial activity, with a broad-spectrum on the activity of different types of microorganisms. Consequently, the main goal of this work was to produce Ag-ZrCN coatings with antimicrobial activity, for the surface modification of hip prostheses. Thin films of ZrCN with several silver concentrations were deposited onto stainless steel 316 L, by DC reactive magnetron sputtering, using two targets, Zr and Zr with silver pellets (Zr+Ag target), in an atmosphere containing Ar, C2H2 and N2. The antimicrobial activity of the modified surfaces was tested against S. epidermidis and the influence of an activation step of silver was assessed by testing samples after immersion in a 5% (w/v) NaClO solution for 5 min. The activation procedure revealed to be essential for the antimicrobial activity, as observed by the presence of an inhibition halo on the surface with 11 at.% of Ag. The morphology analysis of the surface before and after the activation procedure revealed differences in silver distribution indicating segregation/diffusion of the metallic element to the film's surface. Thus, the results indicate that the silver activation step is responsible for an antimicrobial effect of the coatings, due to silver oxidation and silver ion release.

Childhood solid tumors often arise from embryonal-like cells, which are distinct from the epithelial cancers observed in adults, and etiologically can be considered as 'developmental patterning gone awry'. Paired-box (PAX) genes encode a family of evolutionarily conserved transcription factors that are important regulators of cell lineage specification, migration and tissue patterning. PAX loss-of-function mutations are well known to cause potent developmental phenotypes in animal models and underlie genetic disease in humans, whereas dysregulation and/or genetic modification of PAX genes have been shown to function as critical triggers for human tumorigenesis. Consequently, exploring PAX-related pathobiology generates insights into both normal developmental biology and key molecular mechanisms that underlie pediatric cancer, which are the topics of this review.

Background: Ventral hernias are defects of the anterior abdominal wall, the laparoscopic repair has shown some advantages compared to open repair. Aim: To evaluate perioperative outcomes of the laparoscopic ventral hernia repair and to describe risk factors associated to recurrence. Methods: Non-concurrent prospective cohort study, clinical data of all patients who underwent laparoscopic ventral hernia repair between June 2006 and May 2013 were reviewed. Univariate analyses were performed using chi-square for categorical variables and U Mann-Whitney test for continuous variables. Multivariate analysis was performed using a logistic regression model. Results: 127 patients underwent laparoscopic ventral hernia, 52 percent female, age of 58.1 +/- 1.2 years old. Mean Body Mass Index (BMI) was 31 +/- 0.5 kg/m² and 67.7 percent were incisional hernias. Median operative time was 80 minutes (ranging from 30-350) and the median defect size was 6 cm (ranging from 2-20). Conversion to open surgery was necessary in 4 cases (3.9 percent). Median of hospital stay was 2 days (ranging from 1-15). Recurrence rate was 14.2 percent and the median to recurrence was 9 months. Recurrence rate was associated positively to defect size > 10 cm (p = 0.002), previous recurrence (p = 0.029) and operative time > 90 minutes (p = 0.017) in the univariate analyses. However, it was only associated to the first two in the multivariate analysis (OR 3.906; IC 1.734-13.058 y OR 5.93; IC 1.546-22.976, respectively). Conclusions: Laparoscopic repair of ventral hernia is a safe procedure with acceptable perioperative complication rates. Defect size and previous recurrence are associated to a higher recurrence rate.


Introducción: Las hernias ventrales son defectos de la pared abdominal, su reparación laparoscópica ha demostrado ventajas frente a la cirugía abierta. Objetivo: Mostrar nuestra experiencia en reparación laparoscópica de hernias ventrales y describir factores asociados a recidiva. Material y Método: Estudio prospectivo de cohorte no concurrente, revisión de registros clínicos de pacientes sometidos a hernioplastía ventral laparoscópica entre junio de 2006 y mayo de 2013. Registro de variables demográficas, perioperatorias y recidiva. Búsqueda de asociaciones entre variables y recidiva mediante análisis univariado, las que se ajustan usando un modelo de regresión logística. Resultados: Se analizan 127 pacientes, 52 por ciento mujeres, promedio de edad de 58,1 +/- 1,2 años e índice de masa corporal (IMC) de 31 +/- 0,5 kg/m². 67,7 por ciento fueron hernias incisionales, con una mediana de diámetro del defecto reparado de 6 cm (rango 2-20) y de tiempo operatorio de 80 min (rango 30-350). 4 casos (3,9 por ciento) fueron convertidos a cirugía abierta. La mediana de tiempo de hospitalización fue 2 días (rango 1-15). 14,2 por ciento de los casos presentaron recidiva. En el análisis univariado, el diámetro de defecto mayor a 10 cm (p = 0,002), antecedentes de recidiva herniaria (p = 0,029) y un tiempo quirúrgico mayor a 90 min (p = 0,017) se asociaron a recidiva. Posterior al análisis multivariado sólo los dos primeros mantuvieron su asociación (p = 0,01 y p = 0,03 respectivamente). Conclusión: La hernioplastía ventral laparoscópica es una técnica segura, con baja morbilidad. En esta serie inicial, el antecedente de recidiva y defectos mayores a 10 cm se asocian a mayor recidiva herniaria.

The roughness induced during glow-discharge optical-emission spectroscopy (GDOES) measurements has been reported to cause a loss of resolution during GDOES depth-profiling analysis. In this paper, we undertake for the first time a study of the dynamics of the surface morphology of chromium and titanium thin films (designed in mono and multilayer structures) under the impinging of GDOES incoming ions. We performed this study under the theoretical framework of the dynamic scaling theory, by analysing surface morphology changes, as measured ex-situ by AFM, with irradiation time. For single metal layers it was found that, after an initial surface smoothening, the surface undergoes a rapid steep roughening for both systems, with quite similar quantitative dynamics. Once this roughening ends a second temporal scaling regime arises, operating for long length scales with dynamics depending on the sputtering rate of the material. For the chromium layer, with a very high sputtering rate of 5.5 µm min(-1), this regime is consistent with the KPZ model, whereas for the titanium layer an EW scaling regime is indicated. These different scaling regimes are consistent with the development of larger surface slopes for the Cr system. In the multilayer systems, the initial roughness induced on the top Cr layer by GDOES has similar dynamics to that for single-layer Cr. However, a clear decrease in the roughness was observed once the underlying Ti layer, with a lower sputtering rate, was reached. This decrease in the induced roughness is maintained while the Ti layer is eroded. Therefore, choice of appropriate material (i.e. sputtering yield values) combinations and of their depth of location can enable tuning of GDOES-induced roughness and achieve substantial control over the depth profiling process.

Surface modification by means of wear protective and antibacterial coatings represents, nowadays, a crucial challenge in the biomaterials field in order to enhance the lifetime of bio-devices. It is possible to tailor the properties of the material by using an appropriate combination of high wear resistance (e.g., nitride or carbide coatings) and biocide agents (e.g., noble metals as silver) to fulfill its final application. This behavior is controlled at last by the outmost surface of the coating. Therefore, the analytical characterization of these new materials requires high-resolution analytical techniques able to provide information about surface and depth composition down to the nanometric level. Among these techniques are Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES), and angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS). In this work, we present a comparative RBS-GDOES-ARXPS study of the surface characterization of Ag-TiCN coatings with Ag/Ti atomic ratios varying from 0 to 1.49, deposited at room temperature and 200 °C. RBS analysis allowed a precise quantification of the silver content along the coating with a non-uniform Ag depth distribution for the samples with higher Ag content. GDOES surface profiling revealed that the samples with higher Ag content as well as the samples deposited at 200 °C showed an ultrathin (1-10 nm) Ag-rich layer on the coating surface followed by a silver depletion zone (20-30 nm), being the thickness of both layers enhanced with Ag content and deposition temperature. ARXPS analysis confirmed these observations after applying general algorithm involving regularization in addition to singular value decomposition techniques to obtain the concentration depth profiles. Finally, ARXPS measurements were used to provide further information on the surface morphology of the samples obtaining an excellent agreement with SEM observations when a growth model of silver islands with a height d = 1.5 nm and coverage θ = 0.20 was applied to the sample with Ag/Ti = 1.49 and deposited at room temperature.
