BACKGROUND: The most common complication after vitrectomy is the rebleeding in vitreous cavity. It is important to detect the different factors that can increase the vitreous rebleeding rate in these patients. OBJECTIVE: To carry out a retrospective review of the rate of vitreous rebleeding after vitrectomy or phacovitrectomy. METHOD: Retrospective, descriptive and comparative study of patients with a diagnosis of proliferative diabetic retinopathy with phacovitrectomy or vitrectomy procedure. Personal background data, type of surgical intervention and grade of the surgeon who carried out the procedure were obtained. RESULTS: 1227 files of diabetic patients with vitrectomy or phacovitrectomy were reviewed. 65% presented systemic arterial hypertension. The average glomerular filtration rate was 63.50 (±32.36) ml/min/1.73 m2 and glycosylated hemoglobin (HBA1C) of 8% (4.6 to 15%). In the comparison of variables, a significant difference in the rate of vitreous rebleeding was obtained comparing phacovitrectomy with vitrectomy. (p = 0.003), in the relationship between vitrectomy with vitreous rebleeding, an odds ratio of 1.44 was obtained. CONCLUSION: The results obtained show a lower rate of rebleeding in patients undergoing phacovitrectomy in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative dementia. It manifests as early-onset or late-onset AD. Early-onset AD represents about 5.5% of the total cases and occurs in patients under age 65. The EOAD progresses more aggressively and has a shorter life expectancy due to a greater pathogenic load. We present two asymptomatic siblings, a 30-year-old male and a 34- year-old female, who are heterozygous carriers of a pathogenic variant c.428T>C (Ile143Thr) in the presenilin 1 (PSEN1) gene. During genetic counseling, assisted reproduction techniques (ART) coupled with embryo biopsy and a preimplantation genetic test for monogenic disorders (PGT-M) were recommended to provide reproductive care for the patients and their partners. ART and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) have made it possible to have chromosomally normal and genetically unaffected offspring, allowing patients with genetic diseases to become parents.

We studied serotypes circulating dengue virus (DENV) cases, entomological Breteau index, rain-fall index and epidemiology of groups affected during the 2010 outbreak in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. From 2,271 positive cases, 94% were dengue classic and 6% dengue hemorrhagic fever; DENV1 was mainly isolated (99%) (Central-American lineage of American-African-genotype). We found correlation between two environmental phenomena (Increment of rainfall and vector-indexes) (p ≤ 0.05) with epidemiological, clinical and risk of DENV-1 ongoing transmission.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the main vector of Dengue and Yellow Fever flaviviruses. The organophosphate insecticide temephos is a larvicide that is used globally to control Ae. aegypti populations; many of which have in turn evolved resistance. Target site alteration in the acetylcholine esterase of this species has not being identified. Instead, we tracked changes in transcription of metabolic detoxification genes using the Ae. aegypti 'Detox Chip' microarray during five generations of temephos selection. We selected for temephos resistance in three replicates in each of six collections, five from Mexico, and one from Peru. The response to selection was tracked in terms of lethal concentrations. Uniform upregulation was seen in the epsilon class glutathione-S-transferase (eGST) genes in strains from Mexico prior to laboratory selection, while eGSTs in the Iquitos Peru strain became upregulated after five generations of temephos selection. While expression of many carboxyl/cholinesterase esterase (CCE) genes increased with selection, no single esterase was consistently upregulated and this same pattern was noted in the cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (CYP) genes and in other genes involved in reduction or oxidation of xenobiotics. Bioassays using glutathione-S-transferase (GST), CCE and CYP inhibitors suggest that various CCEs instead of GSTs are the main metabolic mechanism conferring resistance to temephos. We show that temephos-selected strains show no cross resistance to permethrin and that genes associated with temephos selection are largely independent of those selected with permethrin in a previous study.
