We present the case of a 33-year-old male patient suffering from lymphocytic pleural effusion, as a result of pleural mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the pleura that is mainly caused by chronic exposure to asbestos fibers and more than 40 years of exposure are needed to develop the disease. Early studies on the relationship of asbestos and mesothelioma were issued in the 1960s. Fibers migrate from the parenchyma of the lung to the visceral pleura. It is widely known that asbestos is an oncogenic factor which can cause damage to DNA. A chest x-ray may reveal pleural effusion with or without pleural thickening, whereas a chest CT may also reveal pleural thickening, uniform and/or lobular. Specific tests, such as immunohistochemical staining, are used in order to help differential diagnosis. Extrapleural pneumonectomy is used as a therapeutic option which involves removal of the lung as well as both the visceral and parietal pleura, the affected part of the pericardium and diaphragm. Surgery should be followed up by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The surgery may lead to a mean survival rate of approximately 9-21 months. The case presented underlines that in the event of pleural effusion with a lymphocyte type physicians should consider the possibility of a pleural mesothelioma during differential diagnosis, even in relatively young patients.

The aim of our study was to describe the expression of cerbB-1, cerbB-2, cerbB-3 and cerbB-4 in endometrial cancer tissue and its correlation with clinicopathologic features and prognosis of endometrial cancer patients diagnosed during or after tamoxifen treatment for breast cancer. Thirteen tamoxifen-related endometrial cancers were identified from the archives of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Patras, Medical School. Tissue specimens from endometrial lesions were immunostained for cerbB-1, cerbB-2, cerbB-3 and cerbB-4. For cerbB-1, five cases were positive and eight were negative. For cerbB-2, ten cases were positive and three were negative. For cerbB-3, nine cases were positive and four were negative. For cerbB-4, eight cases were positive and five were negative. However, a limitation of our study is that the number of cases was small, and further investigations are necessary to allow a more focused evaluation of cerbB-1, cerbB-2, cerbB-3 and cerbB-4 status, as a prognostic factor for endometrial cancer after tamoxifen treatment.

PURPOSE: To investigate the expression of sex steroid receptors in gastric cancer and to correlate their tumor expression profile with the clinicopathological parameters and overall survival of the patients. METHODS: Immunohistochemical methodology was employed in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections from 86 patients with gastric carcinoma. Monoclonal antibodies against androgen (AR), estrogen (ER), and progesterone (PR) receptors were used. Survival rates were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was performed by the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: Fifteen (17.4%) cases of gastric adenocarcinomas were positive for AR, two (2.3%) were positive for PR and three (3.5%) were positive for ER. Significantly higher AR expression was found in tumors with metastases to lymph nodes (P = 0.03). Patients with AR-positive tumors (AR+) had worse prognosis than (AR-) patients (median survival 9 months vs 24 months, P = 0.03). Patients with AR- and heat shock protein 27 (HSP27)-positive tumors (AR+/HSP27+) had a median survival of 6 months, whereas (AR-/HSP27-) patients had a median survival of 42 months (P = 0.017). Multivariate analysis revealed that AR expression and UICC stage were independent factors of unfavorable prognosis (P = 0.037 and P = 0.0055, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Identification of AR-positive gastric carcinomas in gastric biopsies may warrant a more aggressive therapeutic approach and anti-androgen or AR-targeted agents may represent a novel strategy in tackling this devastating malignancy.
