Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is diagnosed based on neurological, electrophysiology, and radiological findings. Due to the technical development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the median nerve is evaluated with several MRI protocols. However, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) combined with a dual-echo steady-state (DESS) protocol is not frequently used to evaluate the median nerve of CTS. This study aimed to evaluate the median nerve in the carpal tunnel using DTI combined with a DESS protocol. Methods: Five healthy volunteers and seven patients with CTS were enrolled. The patients underwent MRI for CTS pre- and post-operatively. The median nerve was evaluated using a 3-T MRI scanner. The parameters of the DESS protocol were as follows: Repetition time (TR)/echo time (TE) = 10.83/3.32 ms, slice thickness = 0.45 mm, field of view (FoV) = 350 × 253 × 350 mm, and 3D voxel size = 0.5 × 0.5 ×0.4 mm. The parameters of the DTI sequence were as follows: TR/TE = 4000/86 ms, slice thickness = 3 mm, FoV = 160 × 993 × 90 mm, 3D voxel size = 1.2 × 1.2 ×3.0 mm, and b value = 0.1000 s/mm2. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) values of the median nerve were statistically analyzed. Statistical significance was set at P< 0.05. Results: The FA value of healthy volunteers was 0.576 ± 0.058, while those of the patients were 0.357 ± 0.094 and 0.395 ± 0.062 pre-and post-operatively, respectively. Statistically significant differences were identified between the FA values of healthy volunteers and pre-operative/post-operative patients. The ADC values of healthy volunteers and pre-operative patients were 0.931 ± 0.096 and 1.26 ± 0.282 (10-3 mm2/s), respectively (P< 0.05). Conclusion: This MRI protocol may be useful for evaluating the median nerve in the carpal tunnel.

BACKGROUND: Increasing elderly population is a major health concern worldwide, requiring various at-home care services. The aim of home-visit rehabilitation therapy is to support at-home living of the elderly and to promote their participation in social activities. There is a paucity of data about the clinical conditions of this population that can contribute to the achievement of goals in-home visit rehabilitation therapy. AIM: This study aimed to clarify clinical variables that could be related to the achievement of goals in-home visit rehabilitation therapy. METHODS: We collected retrospective clinical data of the older adults who underwent home-visit rehabilitation therapy between July 2006 and June 2021. We searched the clinical variables of home-visit rehabilitation therapy users and their frequency of utilization of home-visit rehabilitation therapy services from the clinical record. The initial and final clinical variables evaluated in this study included the abilities of daily living, degree of being bedridden, dementia rating, and levels of support or long-term care. Those variables were evaluated by rehabilitation therapists and doctors. The users were divided into three groups according to the reason for terminating rehabilitation therapy: goal achievement (achieved group), aggravation of underlying disease (aggravated group), and treatment suspension because of their own/others' wish (suspended group). The clinical parameters concerning the rehabilitation program, care level, and activities of daily living were evaluated among the groups. The clinical parameters concerning the rehabilitation program, care level, and activities of daily living were statistically evaluated among those three groups, using the chi-square test and Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: In the achieved, aggravated, and suspended groups, 45, 190, and 38 users were respectively enrolled. The aggravated group showed significantly higher final care level (p = 0.002), degree of being bedridden (p=0.001), and dementia rating (p = 0.017) and significantly lower Barthel index scores (p < 0.001) and Frenchay Activities Index scores (p = 0.001) than the achieved group. Persons requesting the therapy were significantly older adults themselves in the achieved group (p = 0.018). The therapy was significantly performed more than once per week in the achieved group (p = 0.018). CONCLUSIONS: Older adults undergoing self-motivated home-visit rehabilitation therapy more than once per week may contribute to the achievement of the goal.

Most older adults wish to maintain independence in their familiar communities. However, many experience pain and pain-related disabilities which reduce their health-related quality of life (HRQOL), leading to increased hospitalizations and mortality. This study aimed to determine the impact of physical, mental, and cognitive factors, particularly central sensitization-related symptoms (CSS), on the HRQOL of community-dwelling older adults. A total of 206 participants were included in the analysis, which measured HRQOL, basic attributes, physical functions and body pain, mental factors, cognitive factors, and CSS severity using validated tools. A correlation analysis was used to examine the association between HRQOL and each measure. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis (forced entry method) was performed to identify the factors influencing the HRQOL. The study found that pain intensity and CSS severity significantly influenced the HRQOL among community-dwelling older adults. The higher the pain intensity and CSS severity, the lower their HRQOL. The participants had mild pain and CSS, demonstrating the need to monitor, address, and treat even non-severe issues in community-dwelling older adults. This association, revealed for the first time in this study, suggests that approaches to reduce pain and CSS are important for maintaining and improving the HRQOL of community-dwelling older adults.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is associated with a high risk of dementia. Reportedly, 54.6% of older adults with MCI fall into the pre-frailty category. However, it is unclear what differences exist in older adults with regard to their physical, psychological, and functional capacities, which depend on MCI, pre-frailty, or a combination of the two. This study aimed to examine the differences between the association between physical function, psychological function, and functional capacity by examining a combination of MCI and pre-frailty among community-dwelling older Japanese individuals. The participants in the analysis were 236 older people living in the community. They were classified into four groups, as follows: normal, MCI only, pre-frailty only, and pre-frailty/MCI; furthermore, their physical, psychological, and functional capacities were compared. In addition, a multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed using MCI and pre-frailty as dependent variables. No associated factors were identified for MCI only, and a depressive mood was only associated with pre-frailty. When pre-frailty and MCI were combined, knee extension muscle strength, fastest gait speed, the s30 s chair stand test, depressed moods, and the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) were correlated. Our results suggest that when MCI and pre-frailty are combined, declines in both physical and psychological functions and IADL are likely to occur.

BACKGROUND: Predictive factors associated with independent ambulation post-stroke are less commonly reported for patients during the acute phase of stroke. This study aimed to identify the clinical variables predicting ambulation independence in the acute phase of stroke and test the superiority of their prediction accuracy. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients, hospitalized in the acute phase for an initial unilateral, supratentorial stroke lesion, were divided into independent (n = 24) and dependent ambulation (n = 45) groups, with functional ambulation category scores of 4-5 and ≤ 3, respectively. They were evaluated upon admission using the modified Rankin scale (mRS), Stroke Impairment Assessment Set (SIAS) concerning the motor function of the lower extremities, Ability for Basic Movement Scale modified version 2 (ABMS2), and Functional Independence Measure (FIM). RESULTS: The scores of the four measures were significantly different between the groups. A univariate logistic regression analysis identified these variables as prognostic factors for independent ambulation. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis identified the cutoff values (area under the curve) for the mRS, SIAS, FIM, and ABMS2 as 3 (0.74), 12 (0.73), 55 (0.85), and 23 (0.84), respectively. CONCLUSION: In summary, the FIM and ABMS2 may be more accurate in predicting ambulation independence in patients with stroke during the acute phase.

Robot-assisted activity (RAA) using a communication robot (RAA-CR) has been proposed as a tool for alleviating behavioral and psychological symptoms accompanying dementia (BPSD) in patients with cognitive decline. This study aimed to clarify the effects of differences in cognitive function among older adults on changes in active brain areas induced by RAA-CR. Twenty-nine older adults were divided into a cognitive decline group (n = 11) and a control group (n = 18). The participants individually received a 5-minute RAA session, and their resting EEG activity was measured before and after the session. Brain spatial analysis was performed on recorded EEG data using standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography. In addition, statistical comparisons of neural activity in the brain were made before and after RAA-CR and between the cognitively impaired and control groups. These results suggest that RAA-CR stimulates neural activity in the region centered on the posterior cingulate gyrus and precuneus in cognitively healthy older adults but does not significantly alter brain neural activity in cognitively impaired older adults. Therefore, modifications to the implementation methods may be necessary to effectively implement RAA-CR in cognitively impaired individuals.

Cervical spinal cord injury can result in dysphagia and tetraplegia. Dysphagia therapy can be required to avoid aspiration pneumonia during oral intake for persons with cervical spinal cord injury. Complete lateral decubitus position may be a specific position for safe swallowing. However, the literature on dysphagia therapy in complete lateral decubitus position for persons with tetraplegia and dysphagia is limited. We present the case of a 76-year-old man with dysphagia and tetraplegia secondary to cervical cord injury. As the patient wished for oral intake, swallowing training in an elevated position of the head at 60° was already initiated. Two days after admission, aspiration pneumonia occurred. As the spasticity increased continuously, the patient could not comfortably undertake swallowing training in an elevated head position of 60°. The flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) was performed for the patient. The patient did not swallow water or jelly safely in an elevated head position. However, the patient swallowed jelly safely in the right complete lateral decubitus position. Two months after the initiation of oral intake in the right complete lateral decubitus position, the second FEES revealed that the patient swallowed jelly and food in the form of paste safely in the left complete lateral decubitus position. To relieve the pain of the right shoulder induced by continuous right complete lateral decubitus position, the patient retained oral intake in the left or right complete lateral decubitus position alternately for six months without recurrent aspiration pneumonia. Right and left complete lateral decubitus positions when alternately performed in swallowing training can be useful and safe for a patient with dysphagia and tetraplegia secondary to cervical spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Senior day care centers in Japan are the most commonly used insurance service for frail elderly people, and it is important to examine the factors that influence the use of walking aids at these centers. We aimed to investigate the factors affecting the use of walking aids by frail elderly patients in senior daycare centers. METHODS: A total of 131 frail elderly people (mean age 82.7 ± 6.4 years) formed our study population. They were divided into two groups: solo walking (n = 87) and walking aid (n = 44). Individuals with cognitive decline were excluded. All participants were assessed using Functional Independence Measure Motor (FIM-M) sub-scores. Grip strength, knee extension strength, the 10 s Chair Stand test for Frail elderly (Frail CS-10), Single Leg Standing (SLS), and Timed Up and Go (TUG) tests were measured and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The walking aid group scored significantly lower than the solo walking group for five items: FIM-M, knee extension muscle strength, Frail CS-10, SLS, and TUG (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that knee extension muscle strength was the only factor that affected the use or disuse of walking aids (p < 0.05). The cut-off value of the knee extensor muscle strength-to-weight ratio for walking alone was 28.5%. CONCLUSIONS: Knee extensor muscle strength was the most important factor in determining the use of a walking aid.

Previous studies have reported on associations between immobility syndrome and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little is known about the aggravation of this syndrome in older patients negative for COVID-19 infection amidst behavior restriction due to a clustered COVID-19 infection. Patients hospitalized one month before a clustered COVID-19 infection occurred in our hospital were recruited. Rehabilitation therapy was suspended for 25 days during behavior restriction. The ability of daily living of the patients was evaluated with the functional independence measure and Barthel index. Chronological changes in the functional independence measure and Barthel index scores were evaluated monthly, beginning one month before the clustered COVID-19 infection to one month after re-initiation of rehabilitation therapy. Patients with minimum scores in the functional independence measure (18) and Barthel index (0) prior to the clustered COVID-19 infection were excluded. Functional independence measure scores of 73 older patients and the Barthel index scores of 48 patients were analyzed. The mean total functional independence measure score amidst the behavior restriction significantly changed from 36.3 to 35.1 (p = 0.019), while statistical significance was not detected in the mean motor subtotal (from 21.6 to 20.9 with p = 0.247) or cognitive subtotal functional independence measure scores (from 14.6 to 14.2 with p = 0.478). During the behavior restriction, the mean Barthel index scores declined from 25.8 to 23.2 without statistical significance (p = 0.059). Behavior restriction due to a clustered COVID-19 infection may aggravate immobility syndrome in older patients who are negative for COVID-19.

Age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass and function are risk factors for reduced walking ability. This study aimed to understand the characteristic gait parameters of presarcopenia (low muscle mass only), dynapenia (low muscle function only), and sarcopenia (low muscle mass and function), which have differing skeletal muscle characteristics. Skeletal muscle mass, grip strength, and gait parameters (walking speed, cadence, step length, step width, gait angle, foot angle, stance time, swing time, and double stance time) were evaluated in 307 older Japanese women. Low muscle function was determined by grip strength and normal walking speed. Participants were assessed and divided into the normal (60.9%, n = 187), presarcopenia (25.7%, n = 79), dynapenia (5.2%, n = 16), and sarcopenia (8.1%, n = 25) groups. When compared to the normal group, the sarcopenia group had significantly slower walking speed and shorter step length (p < 0.05); the dynapenia group had significantly slower walking speed, smaller cadence, shorter step length, wider step width, and longer stance time (p < 0.05); and the presarcopenia group showed no differences. Skeletal muscle function may therefore be more strongly related to reduced walking function in older adults than body composition factors. The decrease in walking function was most pronounced in older women with dynapenia.

A decline in physical function is common among elderly people who have lost both bone and muscle mass. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between low bone and muscle mass and physical function in elderly women of different age groups who exercise regularly. The analysis included 299 elderly women. Low bone mass was determined by a T-score of −2.5 or less, and low muscle mass was determined by a skeletal muscle mass index of <5.7 kg/m2. Physical function was measured by grip strength, knee extension strength, standing ability, gait function, and balance function. The participants were divided into four groups based on bone and muscle mass (healthy, low bone mass, low muscle mass, and low bone and muscle mass groups), and their physical functions were compared. There were no statistically significant differences in physical function between the low bone and muscle mass and the healthy groups. There were also no statistically significant differences in physical function among the four groups in the late elderly stage (75 and older). Elderly women who exercise regularly are less likely to experience a decline in physical function, even if they have reduced bone and muscle mass.

Clinical factors related to destination after rehabilitation therapy for geriatric patients with post-stroke in chronic-phase hospitals have not been elucidated. This study analyzed the clinical characteristics of geriatric patients with post-stroke at discharge/transfer after rehabilitation therapy in a chronic-phase hospital. Fifty-three patients (20 men, 33 women; mean age 81.36 ± 8.14 years) were recruited (the period analyzed: October 2013−March 2020). Clinical data were statistically analyzed among patients discharged to homes or facilities for older adults or transferred to another hospital. In addition, we analyzed the clinical items at discharge and transfer after rehabilitation therapy using a decision tree analysis. Twelve patients were discharged, eighteen were discharged to facilities for older adults, and twenty-three were transferred to another hospital. There were significant differences in the modified Rankin Scale, admission dates, functional independence measure (FIM) score, and Barthel Index score in the three groups (p < 0.05). Patients with motor subtotal functional independence scores of ≥14 (chronologically improved ≥5) after rehabilitation therapy for <291 days were more likely to be discharged home. Patients in a chronic-phase hospital who improved within a limited period were discharged to their homes, whereas those who were bedridden tended to be transferred to another hospital.

Evidence concerning the mortality of post-stroke patients admitted to a chronic-phase hospital seems to be lacking. This pilot study aimed to identify mortality-related clinical variables in the admission of post-stroke patients from a retrospective perspective. A group of 38 non-survival stroke patients and another group of 46 survival stroke patients in a chronic-phase ward of the single center were recruited. Clinical variables including age, sex, stroke type, and Barthel index (BI) score were collected. The difference in the age and BI scores on admission were statistically significant between the two groups (p < 0.01). Polytomous logistic regression analysis revealed that age (odds ratio = 1.09, p = 0.03, and 95% confidence interval: 1.01−1.07), male sex (odds ratio = 5.04, p = 0.01, and 95% confidence interval: 1.39−18.27), and BI scores on admission (odds ratio = 0.90, p = 0.01, and 95% confidence interval: 0.83−0.97) could be prognostic variables. The percentage of correct classification was 83.3%. Age, male sex, and BI scores on admission may be prognostic indicators. The result of this study could lay the groundwork for palliative care for such a clinical population.

Skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength are positively correlated, but the relationship between grip strength and global muscle strength is controversial. This study aimed to clarify the changes in site-specific skeletal muscle mass by age group and determine the relationship between site-specific, age-related changes in skeletal muscle mass and physical function in community-dwelling elderly people in Japan. The participants were divided into age groups of five-year intervals (65-69 years, 70-74 years, 75-79 years, and ≥80 years) and were also categorized by sex. The skeletal muscle mass of the upper limbs, lower limbs, and trunk was measured using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analyzers (InBody 430 (Biospace Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea) and InBody 470 (InBody Japan Inc., Tokyo, Japan)). For physical function assessment, we measured grip strength, quadriceps strength, sit-up count, sit-and-reach distance, and standing time on one leg with eyes open and performed the timed up and go (TUG) test. The results showed that skeletal muscle mass decreased with age regardless of sex at all measured sites. Furthermore, a partial correlation analysis adjusted for age, physical constitution, and the presence/absence of exercise habits revealed that the highest correlation was between skeletal muscle mass in all sites and grip strength. Thus, monitoring grip strength may be used as a representative of systemic skeletal mass even in Japanese people.

BACKGROUND: External ventricular drainage (EVD) is required to resolve acute hydrocephalus associated with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). The correlation of scoring systems of IVH with indications for EVD for acute hydrocephalus related to IVH is currently unknown. METHODS: We identified 213 hypertensive patients with IVH and divided them into 2 groups according to treatment method: 187 patients receiving blood pressure control alone and 26 patients undergoing EVD. The following patients were excluded: pediatric patients, patients undergoing intracranial hematoma removal, patients with fetal status, and patients without sufficient clinical data. We compared the Glasgow Coma Scale score, Graeb score, LeRoux score, Evans index, and bicaudate index values between the 2 groups and determined the prognostication accuracy of each scoring system. RESULTS: There were significant differences in all 4 scoring systems between the 2 groups (P < 0.001). The cutoff values (sensitivity and specificity) of each scoring system were as follows: Glasgow Coma Scale, 8 (65.4%, 87.7%); Graeb score, 6 (80.8%, 75.4%); LeRoux score, 9 (80.8%, 76.5%); Evans index, 0.245 (80.8%, 67.9%); and bicaudate index, 0.186 (76.9%, 76.5%). The value of the area under the curve of each scoring system (95% confidence interval) was as follows: Glasgow Coma Scale, 0.806 (0.705-0.907); Graeb score, 0.852 (0.779-0.925); LeRoux score, 0.875 (0.812-0.937); Evans index, 0.788 (0.702-0.875); and bicaudate index, 0.778 (0.673-0.883). CONCLUSIONS: The LeRoux score is better for identifying patients with IVH who are more likely to have EVD.

PURPOSE: Day-care services contribute to maintaining the daily living ability of older people cared for at home. This study aimed to detect factors that could impede the continuation of day-care services. METHODS: We collected clinical data of 132 older users (age = 82.8 ± 7.5 years; male:female = 49:83) utilizing our day-care center from April 2019 to March 2020. We evaluated age, sex, underlying disease, medication, family background, care level, food texture, physical ability, reasons for frequenting day-care centers, and combined medical/nursing care plans. Participants were divided into two groups: continuation (n = 51) and suspension (n = 81). The collected items were evaluated statistically using the chi-square test, Mann-Whitney test, and unpaired t test. Multivariate logistic analysis (forward-backward stepwise selection method) was added to the statistically significant items. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05. RESULTS: The comparison test detected statistical significance in Parkinson disease/Parkinsonism, pain complaints, day-service use, short-stay service use, day-care center use to reduce care burden, physical ability including ambulation, and availability of the major caregiver (p < 0.05). Day-care service use to reduce care burden (odds ratio 5.646, p < 0.05), use of short-stay and day-care services (odds ratio 4.798, p < 0.05), and low independent ambulation (odds ratio 0.585, p < 0.05) were the likely factors for suspended use (percentage of correct classification = 68.5%). CONCLUSION: An unreplaceable and effective program for day-service and short-stay services to improve the activities of daily living of older users and reduce care burden is required in day-care centers.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia can result from shock, trauma, aging, head and neck neoplasms, and some cerebrovascular diseases or neuromotor degenerative disorders. Swallowing rehabilitation therapy combined with postural control of the neck, head, and body can be effective for patients with dysphagia. Though the lateral decubitus posture has been a favorable option for swallowing rehabilitation therapy, available clinical data pertaining to it are scarce. METHODS: Twenty-seven healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. The subjects underwent a repetitive saliva swallowing test, food swallowing test, and water swallowing test. The trials were performed in four different positions: upright sitting position, lateral decubitus position with the head raised to 60°, lateral decubitus position with the head raised to 30°, and complete lateral decubitus position. After each trial, the subjects were asked to declare the swallowing difficulty utilizing a visual analogue scale. Swallowing time and swallowing sound level were recorded simultaneously, as objective evaluation in each trial. We analyzed the visual analogue scale scores, swallowing time, and swallowing sound levels for all the four positions. RESULTS: The results of the visual analogue scale of the water swallowing test in the sitting position were significantly lower than those of the complete lateral decubitus position (p < 0.01). However, statistical significance was not detected in swallowing time or the swallowing sound level among the four different positions. Although subjective discomfort in swallowing was identified, difficulty of swallowing was not objectively evident in the trials, irrespective of the position. CONCLUSIONS: A complete lateral decubitus position can be an effective and safe position in swallowing.

In Asia, including Japan, dementia incidence peaks in older adults over ≥75 years; it is therefore important to detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and prevent its onset in this age group. Our study hypothesized that physical and psychological status would be associated with MCI incidence among community-dwelling people aged 75 years and older. The study population comprised 291 such individuals. Participants with a Mini-Mental State Examination score of 28 or more were considered non-MCI, and those with a score of less than 28 and greater than 24 were considered to have MCI. Several other measures were also evaluated, including information about their current medical visits due to diseases, depressive symptom severity, various physical functions (trunk function, 30 s chair-stand test, one-legged stance test, timed up and go test time, 5 m walking time, grip strength, knee-extension strength, and toe-grip strength), and body composition (body fat and skeletal muscle mass). Participants suspected of having MCI had significantly shorter educational histories, higher rates of medical visits due to hypertension, and poorer balance abilities. The results suggest that these indices can be considered screening indicators for detecting MCI in people aged 75 years and older, which may be useful for planning intervention programs for this population.

Preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) is associated with an increased mortality rate; however, its characteristics have not been clearly identified in Japan. This cross-sectional study of community-dwelling older adults compared physical function between people with PRISm and those with no respiratory issues, from 2014 to 2019. We collected demographic data through interviews and measured respiratory and physical functions. We included 668 older adults (male, 23.5%; mean age, 72.8 ± 5.6 years); the prevalence of PRISm was 12%, while the prevalence of obstruction was 6.9%. Propensity score matching was used to identify control subjects with normal spirometry (n = 80) while minimizing the effects of confounders during comparisons with the PRISm population (n = 80). Compared with community-dwelling older adults with normal lung capacity, older adults with PRISm had a lower forced vital capacity (%FVC; 68.7 ± 9.1% vs. 92.5 ± 12.7%, p < 0.001), lower core muscle endurance (sit-up test: 6.7 ± 5.8 vs. 8.7 ± 6.0, p = 0.032), and a longer one-leg stance duration (52.4 ± 41.1 s vs. 36.4 ± 34.1 s, p = 0.008). In multivariable logistic regression, %FVC and increased one-leg stance were independent predictors of PRISm status. The prevalence of PRISm among community-dwelling elderly Japanese exceeds that of obstructive lung disease and is associated with reduced %FVC and better performance on balance testing.

Few studies have examined the effects of health literacy on people at risk of developing dementia; its effects on the pathogenesis of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) are particularly unclear. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between health literacy and SCD in a population of healthy community-dwelling older adults. SCD status was assessed using the Cognitive Function domain of the Kihon Checklist (KCL-CF). Health literacy, in turn, was evaluated using the Communicative and Critical Health Literacy (CCHL) scale. Global cognitive function and depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and a five-item version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-5), respectively. Participants who were suspected of having SCD were significantly older than their non-SCD peers, and scored significantly worse on the CCHL, MMSE, and GDS-5. In addition, SCD status was found to be associated with CCHL and GDS-5 scores, as well as age, according to a logistic regression analysis. These findings suggest that low health literacy is linked to SCD morbidity in healthy community-dwelling older adults and should prove useful in the planning of dementia prevention and intervention programs for this population.
