PURPOSE: The quality, rather than the quantity, of carbohydrate intake may play a major role in the etiology of obesity-related cancers (ORCs). We assessed the association between a previously defined carbohydrate quality index (CQI) and the risk of developing ORCs in the "Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra" (SUN) cohort. METHODS: A total of 18,446 Spanish university graduates [mean age 38 years (SD 12 years), 61% women, mean BMI 23.5 kg/m2 (SD 3.5 kg/m2)], with no personal history of cancer, were followed-up. Baseline CQI was assessed summing quintiles of four previously defined criteria: high dietary fiber intake, low glycemic index (GI), high whole-grain: total-grain carbohydrates ratio and high solid carbohydrates: total carbohydrates ratio. Participants were classified into tertiles of their total CQI. Incident ORCs were confirmed by an oncologist using medical records and by querying the National Death Index blindly to dietary exposures. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 13.7 years, 269 incident cases of ORC were confirmed. A higher CQI was inversely associated with ORC incidence [multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for the upper (T3) versus the lowest tertile (T1) of 0.68 (95% CI: 0.47-0.96), p for trend = 0.047]. Particularly, higher dietary fiber intake was inversely associated with ORC, HRT3 vs. T1=0.57 (95% CI 0.37-0.88 p for trend = 0.013). CONCLUSION: In this prospective Mediterranean cohort, an inverse association between a better global quality of carbohydrate intake and the risk of ORCs was found. Strategies for cancer prevention should promote a higher quality of carbohydrate intake.

PURPOSE: Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with multiple chronic diseases, including metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The aim of the study was to analyze the association between validated predicted serum vitamin D status and the risk of developing T2D in a large prospective cohort based on a Mediterranean population. METHODS: The SUN project is a prospective and dynamic Spanish cohort that gathers university graduates who have answered lifestyle questionnaires, including a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire. The association between predicted serum vitamin D and the risk of T2D was assessed through Cox regression models according to quartiles (Q) of predicted vitamin D at baseline. The models were adjusted for potential confounders and sensitivity analyses were performed to ensure the robustness of our findings. RESULTS: Our study included a total of 18,594 participants and after a total follow-up of 238,078 person-years (median follow-up of 13.5 years), 209 individuals were diagnosed with incident T2D. We found a significant inverse association between predicted levels of serum vitamin D and the risk of developing T2D, after adjusting for potential confounders and performing different sensitivity analyses (hazard ratio Q4 vs. Q1: 0.48, 95% CI 0.26-0.88; p for trend = 0.032). CONCLUSION: The outcomes suggest that higher levels of vitamin D at baseline may be associated with a reduced risk of developing T2D.

Over the last years metal halide perovskites have demonstrated remarkable potential for integration in light emitting devices. Heterostructures allow for tunable bandgap depending on the local anion composition, crucial for optoelectronic devices, but local structural effects of anion exchange in single crystals is not fully understood. Here, we investigate how the anion exchange of CsPbBr3nanowires fully and locally exposed to HCl vapor affects the local crystal structure, using nanofocused x-rays. We study the nanoscale composition and crystal structure as function of HCl exposure time and demonstrate the correlation of anion exchange with changes in the lattice parameter. The local composition was measured by x-ray fluorescence and x-ray diffraction, with general agreement of both methods but with much less variation using latter. The heterostructured nanowires exhibit unintentional gradients in composition, both axially and radially. Ferroelastic domains are observed for all HCl exposure times, and the magnitude of the lattice tilt at the domain walls scales with the Cl concentration.

We used inelastic x-ray scattering methods to measure the terahertz spectrum of density fluctuations of ethanol in both liquid and solid phases. The results of a Bayesian inference-based lineshape analysis with a multiple excitation model and the comparison with a previous similar analysis on water indicate that the different structures induced by hydrogen bonds in ethanol and water have a profound influence on the respective dynamic responses, the latter being characterized by longer living and better resolved high-frequency acoustic excitations. In addition, we compare these findings with those obtained with an alternative approach based on the exponential expansion theory and ensuring sum rules fulfillment, demonstrating that the model's choice directly impacts the number of spectral modes detected.

OBJECTIVES: We tested the effects of a weight-loss intervention encouraging energy-reduced MedDiet and physical activity (PA) in comparison to ad libitum MedDiet on COVID-19 incidence in older adults. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of PREDIMED-Plus, a prospective, ongoing, multicentre randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Community-dwelling, free-living participants in PREDIMED-Plus trial. PARTICIPANTS: 6,874 Spanish older adults (55-75 years, 49% women) with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome. INTERVENTION: Participants were randomised to Intervention (IG) or Control (CG) Group. IG received intensive behavioural intervention for weight loss with an energy-reduced MedDiet intervention and PA promotion. CG was encouraged to consume ad libitum MedDiet without PA recommendations. MEASUREMENTS: COVID-19 was ascertained by an independent Event Committee until December 31, 2021. COX regression models compared the effect of PREDIMED-Plus interventions on COVID-19 risk. RESULTS: Overall, 653 COVID-19 incident cases were documented (IG:317; CG:336) over a median (IQR) follow-up of 5.8 (1.3) years (inclusive of 4.0 (1.2) years before community transmission of COVID-19) in both groups. A significantly lowered risk of COVID-19 incidence was not evident in IG, compared to CG (fully-adjusted HR (95% CI): 0.96 (0.81,1.12)). CONCLUSIONS: There was no evidence to show that an intensive weight-loss intervention encouraging energy-reduced MedDiet and PA significantly lowered COVID-19 risk in older adults with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome in comparison to ad libitum MedDiet. Recommendations to improve adherence to MedDiet provided with or without lifestyle modification suggestions for weight loss may have similar effects in protecting against COVID-19 risk in older adults with high cardiovascular risks.

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and all-cause mortality in a healthy middle-aged Mediterranean cohort. METHODS: We included 15,390 participants -mean age 42.8 years at first HRQoL ascertainment, all university graduates-. HRQoL was assessed with the self-administered Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36) twice, with a 4-year gap. We used multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models to address the relation between self-reported health and Physical or Mental Component Summary (PCS-36 or MCS-36) and mortality, and their interaction with prior comorbidities or adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet). RESULTS: Over 8.7 years of median follow-up time, 266 deaths were identified. Hazard ratio (HR) for the excellent vs. poor/fair category in self-reported health was 0.30 (95 % confidence interval (CI), 0.16-0.57) in the model with repeated measurements of HRQoL. Both the PCS-36 (HRquartile4(Q4)vs.Q1 0.57 [95%CI, 0.36-0.90], ptrend < 0.001; HRper+10points: 0.64 [95%CI, 0.54-0.75]) and the MCS-36 (HRQ4vs.Q1 0.67 [95%CI, 0.46-0.97], ptrend = 0.025; HRper+10points: 0.86 [95%CI, 0.74-0.99]) were inversely associated with mortality in the model with repeated measurements of HRQoL. Previous comorbidities or adherence to the MedDiet did not modify these associations. CONCLUSIONS: Self-reported HRQoL -assessed as self-reported health, PCS-36 and MCS-36- obtained with the Spanish version of the SF-36 were inversely associated with mortality risk, regardless of the presence of previous comorbidities or adherence to the MedDiet.

RESUMO

The A. G. Leventis Foundation International Conference, "Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease and Cognitive Decline with Diet and Lifestyle", was held on May 11-12th, 2022 in Nicosia, Cyprus. This conference examined the role of diet and lifestyle for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of cognitive decline. Speakers from leading academic institutions presented evidence on healthy dietary patterns, with a particular focus on the traditional Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), in association with cognitive outcomes, mainly cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease, from both observational and interventional studies. Moreover, future directions for the potential use of olive oil, rich in polyphenols, for its therapeutic use as a nutraceutical, as well as nutritional interventions with high-quality dietary patterns (i.e. MedDiet) that support existing primarily observational evidence for the prevention of cognitive decline, as well as challenges in designing rigorous clinical trials are summarized and discussed within the conference proceedings.

Background: Obesity is produced by the enlargement of the adipose tissue. Functioning as an endocrine organ, it releases and receives information through a complex network of cytokines, hormones, and substrates contributing to a low-chronic inflammation environment. Diet and healthy habits play key roles in the prevention of obesity and its related pathologies. In this regard, there is a need to switch to healthier and more appetizing diets, such as the Mediterranean one. Objective: To compare the mid-and long-term effects of two Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) interventions, one energy-reduced plus physical activity promotion versus a non-restrictive diet, on peripheral satiety-related hormones, weight loss, glucose/lipid metabolism, and pro-inflammatory markers in subjects with obesity/overweight and metabolic syndrome. Materials and methods: A randomized, lifestyle intervention was conducted in 23 Spanish centers, with a large cohort of patients presenting metabolic syndrome. Our study is a subproject set in IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute). Participants were men and women, aged 55-75 and 60-75, respectively, who at baseline met at least three metabolic syndrome components. Subjects were assigned to two intervention groups: (1) an intensive lifestyle intervention with an energy-reduced MedDiet and physical activity promotion (intervention group) with the aim of weight loss; and (2) a normocaloric MedDiet (control). We quantified in a subsample of 300 volunteers from Hospital del Mar Research Institute (Barcelona), following analytes at baseline, 6 months, and 1 year: glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, C-peptide, ghrelin, GLP-1, glucagon, insulin, leptin, PAI-1, resistin, and visfatin. Anthropometric and classical cardiovascular risk factors were also determined. A multivariate statistical model was employed to compare the two groups. Linear mixed-effect models were performed to compare changes in risk factors and biomarkers between intervention groups and over time. Results: Compared to participants in the control group, those in intervention one showed greater improvements in weight, waist circumference, insulin (P < 0.001), glucose metabolism-related compounds (P < 0.05), triglyceride-related lipid profile (P < 0.05), leptin, blood pressure, and pro-inflammatory markers such as PAI-1 (P < 0.001) at mid-and/or long-term. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein, resistin, and vifastin also decreased in both groups. Conclusion: A weight loss intervention employing a hypocaloric MedDiet and physical activity promotion has beneficial effects on adiposity, glucose metabolism, lipid profile, leptin, and pro-inflammatory markers, such as PAI-1 in both mid-and long-term.

Background: Magnesium sulfate reduces pain scores and analgesic consumption. Its use as an analgesic resource in opioid-free or opioid-sparing techniques have also been tested. The evaluation of the antinociceptive potency of drugs and doses indirectly, through hemodynamic oscillations has been questioned. A relatively new algorithm called the plethysmographic stress index has been considered sensitive and relatively specific as a parameter for assessing the need for intraoperative analgesia. Objectives: The aim of this trial was to assess the intraoperative analgesic capacity of magnesium sulfate compared to remifentanil. The secondary objectives were propofol consumption and its latency, the consumption of opioids, ephedrine, and cisatracurium. Patients and Methods. Forty patients scheduled for post-bariatric dermolipectomy were randomly assigned to two groups to receive total intravenous anesthesia with target-controlled hypnosis induced with propofol. Analgesia was obtained in the remifentanil group with remifentanil at an initial dose of 0.2 µg·kg-1·min-1 and in the magnesium sulfate group with magnesium sulfate 40 mg·kg-1 + 10 mg·kg-1·h-1. Results: There was no statistical hemodynamic difference between the groups before and after orotracheal intubation (p = 0.062) and before and after the surgical incision (p = 0.656). There was also no statistical difference in the variation of mean arterial pressure before and after intubation (p = 0.656) and before and after the surgical incision (p = 0.911). There was similar consumption of cisatracurium, ephedrine, and postoperative opioids between the groups. Some patients in the magnesium sulfate group needed more intraoperative fentanyl and propofol, although the latency of propofol was similar in both the groups. Conclusion: We conclude that using magnesium sulfate in intravenous general anesthesia for post-bariatric dermolipectomy is related to a significant reduction in opioid consumption without compromising hemodynamic stability. Overall, PSI monitoring was helpful in driving the analgesic strategy. The use of magnesium sulfate proved to be an important adjunct in the scenario presented, allowing the use of opioids to be avoided in certain cases. We found no statistical differences in the consumption of neuromuscular blocker and vasoconstrictor. Substituting opioids for magnesium sulfate leads to an increase in propofol consumption in the scenario presented. Studies with a larger sample are needed to corroborate the results presented and evaluate other potential advantages in reducing opioid consumption.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the number of craniosacral therapy sessions that can be helpful to obtain a resolution of the symptoms of infantile colic and to observe if there are any differences in the evolution obtained by the groups that received a different number of Craniosacral Therapy sessions at 24 days of treatment, compared with the control group which did not received any treatment. METHODS: Fifty-eight infants with colic were randomized into two groups of which 29 babies in the control group received no treatment and those in the experimental group received 1-3 sessions of craniosacral therapy (CST) until symptoms were resolved. Evaluations were performed until day 24 of the study. In this study crying hours served as primary outcome. The secondary outcome were the hours of sleep and the severity, measured by an Infantile Colic Severity Questionnaire (ICSQ). RESULTS: Significant statistical differences were observed in favor of experimental group compared to the control group on day 24 in crying hours (mean difference = 2.94, at 95 %CI = 2.30-3.58; p < 0.001) primary outcome, and also in hours of sleep (mean difference = 2.80; at 95 %CI = - 3.85 to - 1.73; p < 0.001) and colic severity (mean difference = 17.24; at 95 %CI = 14.42-20.05; p < 0.001) secondary outcomes. Also, the differences between the groups ≤ 2 CST sessions (n = 19), 3 CST sessions (n = 10) and control (n = 25) were statistically significant on day 24 of the treatment for crying, sleep and colic severity outcomes (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Babies with infantile colic may obtain a complete resolution of symptoms on day 24 by receiving 2 or 3 CST sessions compared to the control group, which did not receive any treatment.

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease (MMD) affects young patients, is generally progressive, and results in strokes or cerebral hemorrhages for which medical management is not effective. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of surgical management with minimally invasive cerebral revascularization in MMD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing extracranial-intracranial microsurgical revascularization surgery with mini-craniotomy, analyzing the epidemiological, clinical, neuroimaging, postoperative evolution, and complications. We describe the technique in detail. Key outcomes included graft patency, complications, and recurrence of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. RESULTS: From September 2017 to December 2020, 12 brain revascularization procedures for MMD were performed in eight patients (four bilateral), and all 12 grafts were classified as patent. The main complication was contralateral cerebral infarction identified by postoperative neuroimaging in a patient without clinical symptomatology. There was no case of scalp ischemia or necrosis when performing the minimally invasive approach with linear incision. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the minimally invasive extracranial-intracranial cerebral revascularization procedure for MMD in adults is effective, with graft patency in all cases and minimal morbidity.

Introducción: El colgajo pediculado realizado con músculo temporal es una opción terapéutica válida para la reconstrucción de defectos de la región facial posterior a una resección quirúrgica, es una alternativa aceptable a los colgajos libres cuando estos no pueden ser utilizados ya sea por el performance status o patología de base de los pacientes a tratar o por no contar con cirujano microvascular. Objetivo: Describir nuestra experiencia en el uso de este colgajo para la reconstrucción de 7 pacientes con defectos de órbita, paladar y mucosa yugal tras la cirugía ablativa de diversas patologías. Materiales y métodos: Revisión retrospectiva de los pacientes del Servicio de Cirugía General del Hospital José Ramon Vidal, Corrientes-Argentina operados en el periodo comprendido desde enero del 2019 hasta enero del 2021.En este lapso, 7 pacientes fueron sometidos a cirugía reconstructiva inmediata con colgajo de músculo temporal en defectos del tercio medio de la región facial. Resultados: Un total de siete pacientes, (4 masculino- 3 femenino), sometidos a cirugía ablativa por presentar patología maligna (6) y patología benigna (1), con una edad media de 60 años. Dos colgajos se utilizaron para defectos de región orbitaria y partes blandas, seis para defectos en la cavidadoral­ en un paciente se emplearon los 2 músculos temporales-. El colgajo fue exitoso en todos los casos, se presentaron complicaciones menores como: dolor postoperatorio, hematoma, trismus, depresión de la zona dadora. Se obtuvo márgenes libres en el total de los procedimientos. Discusión: La cirugía reconstructiva con colgajo pediculado de musculo temporal es una excelente alternativa de colgajo regional con buenos resultados, posee alta tasa de éxito justificada por su buena vascularización. Además, la proximidad del músculo temporal con la región maxilofacial y su inserción contribuyen a obtener un arco de rotación hasta 180° sin comprometersu vitalidad. Es útil para la reconstrucción en un acto quirúrgico, acortando el tiempo intraoperatorio y sin cambios posicionales. Conclusiones: El colgajo de músculo temporal resulta una opción válida a los colgajos libres osteo-mio-cutáneos para defectos mixtos (óseos y de partes blandas) del tercio medio facial luego de la cirugía ablativa, cuando estos últimos no pueden ser implementados teniendo en cuenta varios aspectos como performance estatus de los pacientes, patología de base y necesidad de contar con un cirujano microvascular


Introduction: temporalis muscle vascularized flaps is a valid therapeutic option for reconstruction of defects in facial region after surgical resections. It is an acceptable alternative to free transfer flaps when these cannot be used because of the patient's performance state and base pathologies. Or because of the lack of a microvascular surgeon. Objectives: To describe on experience applying this kind of flaps for the reconstruction or 7 patients, with defects in palate orbit and yugal mucose after resective surgeries for various pathologies. Materials and methods: retrospective revision of patients in the general department, of Jose R Vidal Hospital (Corrientes - Argentina) into underwent surgery during the period between January 2019 ad January 2021. A total of 7 patients underwent immediate reconstructive surgery using a temporalis muscle flap. Results: 7 patients (4 males y 3 female) underwent resective surgery for different malignant (6) and benign (1) with a median age of 60. Two flaps were used for defects of the orbitary region and soft tissue, six for defects of the oral cavity (in one patient both temporalis muscle were used. Te procedure was successful in all cases, and minor complication were present, (post operatory pain, hematoma, trismus, excavation of the donor region) all procedures resulted un surgical margins of lesion of malignancy. Discussion: reconstructive surgery using a vascularized flap of temporalis muscle is an excellent alternative for regional flaps with good results and a high success justified because of its a good irrigation. Besides the proximity between temporalis muscle and the maxillofacial region, possibilities a flap rotation of up to 180 grades without compromising its vitality it is also useful for reconstruction in a single surgery shortening intra-operatory time while avoiding repositioning of the patients during the procedure. Conclusions: Temporalis muscle flaps are valid option to free osteo- mayo- cutaneal flaps for mixed defects (involving bone and soft tissue) of the medium third of facial region after resective surgeries when the latter cannot be carried and because of various aspects little performance status base pathologies and lack of microvascular margin.

We present a systematic study on the effect of water on the microscopic dynamics of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate by means of quasielastic neutron scattering. By mixing the ionic liquid with either heavy or light water, the different contributions to the quasielastic broadening could be identified and treated separately. This study was performed at room temperature, which is more than 15 °C above the demixing line. Our results show that even small amounts of water accelerate the diffusion mechanisms considerably. While samples with small water percentage reveal a diffusion process confined within ionic liquid nanodomains, an admixture of more than 15 wt. % water relieves the confinement. Furthermore, the presence of two water species was identified: one behaving as free water, whereas the other was interpreted as a component bound to the ionic liquid motion. Based on the fact that water preferentially binds to the BF4 anion, which itself has a negligible contribution to the scattered intensity, our experiments reveal unprecedented information about the microscopic anion dynamics.

OBJECTIVES: Examine the acute effects (pre-, during, post-intervention) of two different intensities of aerobic exercise or rest on autonomic, oculomotor, and vestibular function and symptom burden in patients with a recent sport-related concussion (SRC) and compare their responses to sex-matched, age-stratified, non-concussed (HEALTHY) student-athletes. METHODS: Student-athletes between the ages of 13 and 18 that presented to the sports medicine clinic within Day 3-7 post-SRC and from local schools were recruited for a randomized controlled trial (RCT). The participants were administered the Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS), King-Devick (K-D), and Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS) before and after the intervention. Heart rate variability (HRV) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were collected before, during, and after the intervention. The intervention was either a single, 20-min session of treadmill walking at 40% (40HR) or 60% of age-predicted max heart rate (60HR), or seated, rest (NOEX). RESULTS: 30 participants completed the intervention with the SRC group treated 4.5 ± 1.3 days post-injury. Pre-exercise HRV and MAP were significantly different (p's < 0.001) during treatment but returned to pre-exercise values within 5 min of recovery in both the SRC and HEALTHY groups. Both the SRC and HEALTHY groups exhibited similar reductions pre- to post-intervention for symptom severity and count (p's < 0.05), three VOMS items (p's < 0.05) but not K-D time. CONCLUSIONS: To date, this is the first adolescent RCT to report the acute, systemic effects of aerobic exercise on recently concussed adolescent athletes. The interventions appeared safe in SRC participants, were well-tolerated, and provided brief therapeutic benefit. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier NCT03575455.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is projected to affect 135 million by 2050. Diet is a pertinent target for primary prevention, but firm recommendations for dementia prevention are not available yet. Our aim was to address the association between exploratory (empirically derived) dietary patterns (DP) and changes in the Spanish Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (STICS-m, maximum score = 41 points) over 6 years. METHOD: Information on diet was collected with a validated 136-item food-frequency questionnaire from 803 participants in the Mediterranean cohort "Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra." We used principal component analysis to derive exploratory DP. The derived DP were associated with change in STICS-m scores over 6 years, through adjusted multiple linear regression models. RESULTS: Two main DP were identified. The first DP resembled a Western dietary pattern (WDP)-high in sugar, fat, processed foods, and red meat-and the second DP resembled a Mediterranean dietary pattern (MDP)-high in vegetables, fruits, nuts, fish, and olive oil. Adherence to the WDP (tertile 3 vs tertile 1) was significantly associated with negative STICS-m changes after 6 years (between-tertile difference in changes: -0.80 points; 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.51, -0.08, p value = 0.03). Meanwhile, the MDP showed a positive +0.71 point (95% CI 0.15, 1.26, p value = 0.01) between-tertile difference in changes in the STICS-m score. CONCLUSIONS: A healthy, prudent, MDP was associated with less decline in cognitive function and, thus, could help to lower dementia incidence. Western-type diets were associated with a greater decline in cognitive performance and could increase dementia incidence.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: A potential protection against COVID-19 by a high-quality dietary pattern is to be expected given the biological plausibility supporting the beneficial effects of an adequate dietary intake on the immune system. However, knowledge on the relationship between long-term maintained healthy dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection is still sparse. We longitudinally assessed this association in a well-known Mediterranean cohort. METHODS: We assessed 9,677 participants from the SUN Project, a prospective cohort of middle-aged university graduates in Spain. We inquired about a positive result in a COVID-19 diagnostic test during the months of February to December 2020. After excluding health professionals (HP), 5,194 participants were included in the statistical analyses (mean age: 52.6, SD: 12.4; 55.2% women). Food habits were assessed at baseline using a previously validated semiquantitative 136-item food frequency questionnaire. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet (cumulative average of 2 repeated measurements 10 years apart) was assessed using the 0-to-9 Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS). We used multivariable logistic regression models to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for incident COVID-19 according to the MDS. RESULTS: Among 5,194 non-HP participants, 122 reported to have received a positive COVID-19 diagnostic test. Participants with intermediate adherence to the Mediterranean diet (3 < MDS ≤ 6) had a significantly lower odds of developing COVID-19 (multivariable-adjusted OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.34-0.73), and those with the highest adherence (MDS > 6) exhibited the lowest risk (multivariable-adjusted OR = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.16-0.84, p for trend < 0.001) as compared with participants with MDS ≤ 3. This inverse association remained robust within subgroups and in sensitivity analyses. Notwithstanding, no significant associations were observed for health professionals (p for interaction = 0.06). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, better adherence to the Mediterranean diet may be associated with a lower risk of COVID-19. Our results are applicable only to persons who are not health professionals.

Lachryphagous males of Phortica variegata (Fallén, 1823) are gaining increasing attention in Europe, as they act as vectors of the nematode Thelazia callipaeda Railliet & Henry, 1910, causal agent of thelaziosis, an emergent zoonotic disease. Currently, there are no effective control strategies against the vector, and surveillance and monitoring rely on time-consuming and nonselective sampling methods. Our aim was to improve the knowledge about the population dynamics and the chemical ecology of the species. A total of 5,726 P. variegata flies (96.4% males and 3.6% females, mostly gravid) were collected in field experiments during June-September of 2020 in an oak forest in northern Spain. Our results indicate that 1) by means of sweep netting a significantly higher number of captures were found both around the collector´s body and in the air than at ground level; 2) a positive relationship was detected between the abundance of Phortica flies and temperature, with two significant peaks of abundance at 24 and 33°C; 3) the blend of red wine and cider vinegar was the most attractive bait; 4) yellow traps captured fewer flies compared to black and transparent traps; and 5) a significant reduction toward vinegar and wine was detected in presence of the phenolic monoterpenoid carvacrol. In addition, all the males (n = 690) analyzed by both molecular detection and dissection resulted negative for the presence of T. callipaeda larvae. Overall, these findings provide a better understanding of the vector in terms of monitoring and management strategies.
