RESUMO

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a medicinal, ornamental and aromatic plant, however, its size can be an obstacle to its commercialization as a potted ornamental plant. Paclobutrazol (PBZ) is a substance that can retard plant growth by inhibiting the synthesis of gibberellins. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of paclobutrazol on growth regulation and gas exchange of basil (var. Cinnamon). The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with five treatments (PBZ doses: 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 mg L-1), with eight replicates. Growth (plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, leaf dry mass, stem dry mass, inflorescence dry mass, and total), growth rates (leaf mass ratio, stem mass ratio, inflorescence mass ratio, and robustness quotient), chlorophyll indices, gas exchange (gs, A, E, Ci, WUE, iWUE and iCE) were evaluated. Paclobutrazol reduced the growth of basil plants and increased the chlorophyll indices, A, gs, and WUE. Paclobutrazol can be used to regulate plant growth of basil plants var. Cinnamon, without altering its physiological and ornamental characteristics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of growth hormone (GH) on endosteal implant's surface at the early stages of osseointegration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty tapered acid-etched titanium implants were divided into four groups: i) Collagen, used as a control group; and three experimental groups, where after collagen coating, GH was administered directly to the surface in varying concentrations: ii) 0.265 mg, iii) 0.53 mg, and iv) 1 mg. Implants were placed in an interpolated fashion in the anterior flange of C3, C4 or C5 of 15 sheep with minimum distance of 6 mm between implants. After 3-, 6- and 12-weeks of healing samples were harvested, histologically processed, qualitatively and quantitatively assessed for bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO). RESULTS: Statistical analysis as a function of time in vivo and coating resulted in no significant differences for BIC and BAFO at any evaluation time point. Histological evaluation demonstrated similar osseointegration features for all groups with woven bone formation at 3 weeks and progressive replacement of woven for lamellar bone in close contact with the implant surface and within the implant's threads. CONCLUSIONS: A single local application of growth hormone to the surface of titanium implants did not yield improved implant osseointegration independent of healing time.

RESUMO

Aim of Study - we hypothesize if there are any apparent risk stratifications to the abdominal wall compromise after open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery and if the outcomes of retromuscular sublay mesh repair using Rives/Stoppa's technique were different from the literature. Description of a 10-year experience of a single center using sublay retromuscular mesh hernia repair in patients with ventral hernia after RYGB, including a total of 189 patients. 149 (78.8%) patients were women. Mean age of 47.3±10.9 years. 171 (90.48%) patients had at least one comorbidity, being systemic arterial hypertension the most prevalent (74.26%). The most frequent location of hernias was in the epigastric region with 125 cases (66.1%), followed by umbilical, inferior and subcostal (28.4%; 3.6%; 1.8%). The mean BMI of patients undergoing bariatric surgery was 50.2±6.6 kg/m². 112 (59.26%) patients within the ventral hernia sample had a BMI higher than 50 kg/m² before the bariatric surgery. The average length-of-stay at the hospital was 2.6 days. There were 17 (9%) cases of hernia recurrence. BMI>50 kg/m² and female sex may be risk factor to incisional ventral hernia in patients after open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Retromuscular sublay mesh appliance using Rives/Stoppa's technique had low length-of-stay of hospitalization and hernia recurrence compared to the literature.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Establishing straightforward and reproducible steps to describe the technique performed with the aid of the robotic system for complex hernia surgery is key for good outcomes. Even using the description of open surgery as a parameter for performing the robotic technique, it is important to stress the particularities of this access. To describe the steps to perform robotic-assisted TAR (r-TAR) in a standardized technique, with a critical and safe view of all the anatomical structures. DESCRIPTION OF THE TECHNIQUE: We defined 8 landmarks for the critical view of safety in r-TAR which include: (1) patient position, trocar and docking; (2) posterior rectus sheath mobilization; (3) transversus abdominis release (TAR)-Top-down technique; (4) transversus abdominis release (TAR)-bottom-up technique and mesh insertion; (5) contralateral trocar insertion and redocking, 6) posterior sheath closure; (7) final mesh positioning; and (8) anterior defect closure and drains. DISCUSSION: Complex hernia surgery using a robotic-assisted posterior component separation requires well-established steps so the procedure can be reproducible and achieve better results.

RESUMO

Three humus forms that are widespread in the Inner Alps, a dysmull below Pinus sylvestris, an oligomull below Abies alba and a mor below Pinus cembra, were studied by following mineral nitrogen production and uptake and by a characterization of the pedofauna. Due to the production and uptake of nitrogen, mainly as nitrates and also due to the dominance of Lumbricids versus Arthropods, the oligomull was the sole humus form that functioned as a mull. Nevertheless relatively weak mineral nitrogen production and the dominance of endogeic soil-dwelling earthworms versus anecic earthworms demonstrated the moderate activity of this mull, which is representative of humus forms of old growth forests and cold climates. There was a discrepancy between the very low biological activity of the dysmull and its status of mull, while an observed bifunctioning between the different layers of this humus also differentiated it from the mor.

RESUMO

PIP: The Mexican Foundation for Family Planning (MEXFAM) worked to solve the unemployment problems of physicians and to increase health services to underserved rural areas. In Mexico, 75% of practicing physicians were located in 16 urban areas. Mexico had a large population of 83 million, of whom many in rural areas have been deprived of family planning and medical services. MEXFAM initiated the Community Doctors Project in 1986. The aim was to help Mexican doctors set up a medical practice in marginal urban towns and small towns with low income residents. Funding to physicians was provided for conducting a market survey of the proposed region and for advertising the new medical services. Loans of furniture and medical supplies were provided, and options were provided for purchase of equipment at a later date. During the promotion, services for maternal and child health care were provided for a small fee, while family planning was provided for free. Doctors usually become self-sufficient after about two years. The MEXFAM project established 170 community doctor's offices in 30 out of 32 states. Services were provided for at least 2500 families per office. In 1990, 13 offices were opened to serve an estimated 182,000 clients. A new effort is being directed to owners of Mexican factories. MEXFAM will set up a medical and family planning clinic very close to factories for a company contribution of only $12,000. The clinic promotion is being marketed through videos. MEXFAM found two companies that agreed to support a clinic.^ieng

RESUMO

The effect of either the muscle spindle cell receptor technique of applied kinesiology or a placebo technique on isometric strength of the right quadriceps femoris muscle group was studied among 20 normal human subjects. Peak, perpendicular maximal values of isometric quadriceps femoris muscle force was measured by a force transducer. Three training sessions consisting of three trials of peak maximal contractions of the isometric quadriceps femoris muscle were performed by all subjects. After the three training sessions, matched pairs of subjects were formed from a rand order list of each subject's mean values of isometric quadriceps femoris muscle strength on the third session. One subject of a matched pair was then randomly assigned to either an experimental (applied kinesiology) or control (placebo) group for the testing session. No significant differences in mean values of isometric quadriceps femoris muscle strength between the matched pairs for control and experimental subjects were noted. Within the context of a normal population, the applied kinesiology technique does not appear to augment isometric quadriceps femoris muscle strength.
