Background: DIP2B is related to cancer progression. This study investigated the roles and pathways of DIP2B in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Methods: DIP2B expression and the relationship between survival time of cancer patients and DIP2B expression were analyzed. The relationship between DIP2B expression and survival time in LUAD patients was evaluated by a meta-analysis. Cox and survival analyses were used to evaluate the prognostic factors and construct a prognostic nomogram. The mechanisms and effects of DIP2B and the relationship between DIP2B expression and the immune microenvironment were investigated using bioinformatics, CCK-8, western blotting, and transwell experiments. Results: DIP2B was overexpressed in LUAD tissues. DIP2B overexpression was associated with shorter prognosis and was an unfavorable risk factor for prognosis in LUAD patients. DIP2B co-expressed genes were involved in cell division, DNA repair, cell cycle, and others. Inhibition of DIP2B expression could downregulate the proliferation, migration, and invasion of LUAD A549 and H1299 cells, which was related to the decrease in CCND1 and MMP2 protein expression. BRCA1 overexpression was associated with short prognosis, and the nomogram formed by DIP2B and BRCA1 was associated with a poor prognosis in LUAD patients. DIP2B expression correlated with immune cells (such as CD8 T cells, Tcm, and iDCs) and cell markers. Conclusion: DIP2B is a potential biomarker of poor prognosis and the immune microenvironment in LUAD. Inhibition of DIP2B expression downregulated cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, which might be related to the decrease in CCND1 and MMP2 protein expression. DIP2B-related nomograms might be useful tools for predicting the prognosis of LUAD patients.

In this randomized controlled trial, 74 patients scheduled for gynecological laparoscopic surgery (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade I/II) were enrolled and randomly divided into two study groups: (i) Group C (control), received sufentanil (0.3 µg/kg) and saline, followed by sufentanil (0.1 µg/kg∙h) and saline; and (ii) Group F (OFA), received esketamine (0.15 mg/kg) and lidocaine (2 mg/kg), followed by esketamine (0.1 mg/kg∙h) and lidocaine (1.5 mg/kg∙h). The primary outcome was the 48-h time-weighted average (TWA) of postoperative pain scores. Secondary outcomes included time to extubation, adverse effects, and postoperative sedation score, pain scores at different time points, analgesic consumption at 48 h, and gastrointestinal functional recovery. The 48-h TWAs of pain scores were 1.32 (0.78) (95% CI 1.06-1.58) and 1.09 (0.70) (95% CI 0.87-1.33) for Groups F and C, respectively. The estimated difference between Groups F and C was - 0.23 (95% CI - 0.58 - 0.12; P = 0.195). No differences were found in any of the secondary outcomes and no severe adverse effects were observed in either group. Balanced OFA with lidocaine and esketamine achieved similar effects to balanced anesthesia with sufentanil in patients undergoing elective gynecological laparoscopic surgery, without severe adverse effects.Clinical Trial Registration: ChiCTR2300067951, www.chictr.org.cn 01 February, 2023.

OBJECTIVE: To study the predictive performance of the imaging model based on the texture analysis of CT plain scan in distinguishing between low (grade I and II) and high (grade III and IV) of Fuhrman pathological grade of renal clear cell carcinoma. METHODS: The clinical data of 94 patients with ccRCC who underwent CT scan and were confirmed by biopsy or surgery in TCGA-KIRC public database were retrospectively analyzed. There were 32 cases of low-grade ccRCC and 62 cases of high-grade ccRCC. The patients were randomly divided into training set and verification set according to the proportion of 7:3 by stratified sampling method. The imaging characteristics of ccRCC were calculated in the plain CT images. Lasso regression was used to reduce the dimensionality of the imaging characteristics of the training set, and binary logistic regression was used to construct the prediction model. Bootstrap method was used to verify the training set model and the validation set model, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) was calculated respectively. RESULTS: Binary logistic regression showed that only imaging features were independent risk factors for predicting the Furhman classification of ccRCC. The predictive model was y = 1/[1 + exp (-z)], z = 1.274 × imaging risk score + 0.072. The results of bootstrap internal validation showed that the AUC of the training group was 0.961 (95% CI: 0.900-0.913). The Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test showed that the prediction model had a good calibration in the training group (P = 0.416). The AUC of prediction model in validation group was 0.731 (95% CI: 0.500-1.000). The Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test results showed that the prediction model had a good calibration in the validation group (P = 0.592). CONCLUSION: The model based on CT texture analysis has a good predictive effect in differentiating low-grade and high-grade ccRCC and can provide reference for the treatment and prognosis of patients.

BACKGROUND: Reflux esophagitis has an increasing prevalence and complex and diverse symptoms. Identifying its risk factors is crucial to understanding the etiology, prevention, and management of the disease. The occurrence of reflux esophagitis may be associated with food reactions, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, and metabolic syndromes. AIM: To investigate the risk factors for reflux esophagitis and analyze the effects of immunoglobulin (Ig) G-mediated food intolerance, H. pylori infection, and metabolic syndrome on reflux esophagitis. METHODS: Outpatients attending the Second Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital between 2017 and 2021 were retrospectively enrolled. The patients' basic information, test results, gastroscopy results, H. pylori test results, and IgG-mediated food intolerance results were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze risk factors for reflux esophagitis. Statistical mediation analysis was used to evaluate the effects of IgG-mediated food intolerance and metabolic syndrome on H. pylori infection affecting reflux esophagitis. RESULTS: A total of 7954 outpatients were included; the prevalence of reflux esophagitis, IgG-mediated food intolerance, H. pylori infection, and metabolic syndrome were 20.84%, 61.77%, 35.91%, and 60.15%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that the independent risk factors for reflux esophagitis included IgG-mediated food intolerance (OR = 1.688, 95%CI: 1.497-1.903, P < 0.00001) and metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.165, 95%CI: 1.030-1.317, P = 0.01484), and the independent protective factor for reflux esophagitis was H. pylori infection (OR = 0.400, 95%CI: 0.351-0.456, P < 0.00001). IgG-mediated food intolerance had a partially positive mediating effect on H. pylori infection as it was associated with reduced occurrence of reflux esophagitis (P = 0.0200). Metabolic syndrome had a partially negative mediating effect on H. pylori infection and reduced the occurrence of reflux esophagitis (P = 0.0220). CONCLUSION: Patients with IgG-mediated food intolerance and metabolic syndrome were at higher risk of developing reflux esophagitis, while patients with H. pylori infection were at lower risk. IgG-mediated food intolerance reduced the risk of reflux esophagitis pathogenesis in patients with H. pylori infection; however, metabolic syndrome increased the risk of patients with H. pylori infection developing reflux esophagitis.

Brain metastasis from lung cancer is a prevalent mode of treatment failure associated with a poor prognosis. The incidence of brain metastasis has recently shown a dramatic increase. The early detection and risk stratification of lung cancer-related brain metastasis would be highly advantageous for patients. However, our current knowledge and comprehension of the underlying mechanisms driving brain metastasis in lung cancer pose significant challenges. This review summarizes the mechanisms underlying brain metastasis, focusing on the intricate interplay between lung cancer-derived tumor cells and the unique characteristics of the brain, recent advancements in the identification of driver genes, concomitant genes, epigenetic features, including miRNAs and long noncoding RNAs, as well as the molecular characterization of brain metastasis originating from other organs, which may further enhance risk stratification and facilitate precise treatment strategies.

Elevation gradients, often regarded as "natural experiments or laboratories", can be used to study changes in the distribution of microbial diversity related to changes in environmental conditions that typically occur over small geographical scales. We obtained bacterial sequences using MiSeq sequencing and clustered them into operational taxonomic units (OTUs). The total number of reads obtained by the bacterial 16S rRNA sequencing analysis was 1,090,555, with an average of approximately 45,439 reads per sample collected from various elevations. The current study observed inconsistent bacterial diversity patterns in samples from the lowest to highest elevations. 983 OTUs were found common among all the elevations. The most unique OTUs were found in the soil sample from elevation_2, followed by elevation_1. Soil sample collected at elevation_6 had the least unique OTUs. Actinobacteria, Protobacteria, Chloroflexi were found most abundant bacterial phyla in current study. Ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and total phosphate (TP) are the main factors influencing bacterial diversity at elevations_1. pH was the main factor influencing the bacterial diversity at elevations_2, elevation_3 and elevation_4. Our results provide new visions on forming and maintaining soil microbial diversity along an elevational gradient and have implications for microbial responses to environmental change in semiarid mountain ecosystems.

Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a zoonotic disease caused by the metacestode of Echinococcus multilocularis. Although surgical resection is the optimal treatment for hepatic AE, some patients with hepatic AE located in special introhepatic sites cannot be radically cured by conventional surgery. Here, we report that a 10-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital with occupying liver lesions for 6 months. Computed tomography examination showed irregular mixed-density masses in the right lobe and caudate lobe of the liver, with partial invasion of the right hepatic artery, right hepatic vein, and right branch of the portal vein. The patient was preoperatively diagnosed with hepatic AE, which cannot be cured by conventional liver lobectomy. The patient underwent semi-ex vivo liver resection with autologous liver transplantation (second hepatic portal reconstruction, posterior hepatic inferior vena cava repair, and hepatic artery repair) and biliary-intestinal anastomosis. After hospital discharge, she has kept living a healthy life without disease recurrence for 13 months until the end of the last follow-up. This case shows that semi-ex vivo hepatectomy with autologous liver transplantation might be a feasible and safe choice for certain patients with AE located in special introhepatic sites, which has provided novel experiences for the surgical treatment of hepatic AE.

Background: Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) is used for the treatment of prostate cancer. However, the specific risk factors for the development of castration-resistant disease are still unclear. The present study sought to identify predictors of patient prognostic outcomes through analyses of clinical findings in large numbers of prostate cancer patients following ADT treatment. Methods: Data pertaining to 163 prostate cancer patients treated at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical University and Maoming People's Hospital from January 1, 2015, to December 30, 2020, were retrospectively analyzed. Dynamic changes in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were regularly assessed, including both time to nadir (TTN) and nadir PSA (nPSA). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed with Cox risk proportional regression models, while differences in biochemical progression-free survival (bPFS) were compared among groups with Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests. Results: The bPFS values over the median 43.5-month follow-up period differed significantly between patients with nPSA levels < 0.2 ng/mL and ≥ 0.2 ng/mL, being 27.6 months and 13.5 months, respectively (log-rank P < 0.001). A significant difference in median bPFS was also observed when comparing patients with a TTN ≥ 9 months (27.8 months) to those with a TTN < 9 months (13.5 months) (log-rank P < 0.001). Conclusions: TTN and nPSA are valuable predictors of prognosis in prostate cancer patients after ADT treatment, with better outcomes evident in patients with nPSA < 0.2 ng/mL and TTN > 9 months.

Chiral nonlinear metasurfaces could natively synergize nonlinear wavefront manipulation and circular dichroism, offering enhanced capacity for multifunctional and multiplexed nonlinear metasurfaces. However, it is still quite challenging to simultaneously enable strong chiral response, precise wavefront control, high nonlinear conversion efficiency, and independent functions on spins and chirality. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate multiplexed third-harmonic (TH) holograms with four channels based on a chiral Au-ZnO hybrid metasurface. Specifically, the left- and right-handed circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) components of the TH holographic images can be designed independently under the excitation of an LCP (or RCP) fundamental beam. In addition, the TH conversion efficiency is measured to be as large as 10-5, which is 8.6 times stronger than that of a bare ZnO film with the same thickness. Thus, our work provides a promising platform for realizing efficient and multifunctional nonlinear nanodevices.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of different marital status on the prognosis of patients with prostate cancer. METHODS: The general data of 169,533 patients with prostate cancer confirmed by biopsy or surgery in SEER database were retrospectively analyzed. The COX univariate analysis was performed first, and the meaningful variables of the univariate analysis were incorporated into the Cox proportional hazards model for multivariate analysis, and the independent factors affecting the prognosis of patients with prostate cancer were obtained. RESULTS: The collected patients accounted for 59% of married patients and 22% of unmarried patients. COX multivariate analysis, the results showed: age (HR: 1.063; P<0.001), tumor differentiation grade (HR: 1.367; P<0.001), marital status: married (HR: 0.648; P<0.001), unmarried (HR: 0.602; P<0.001), bone metastasis (HR: 6.077; P<0.001), brain metastasis (HR: 2.296; P<0.001), liver metastasis (HR: 2.582; P<0.001), lung metastasis (HR: 1.256; P<0.001), distant lymph node metastasis (HR: 1.698; P<0.001), T stage (HR: 1.047; P>0.005), N stage (HR: 0.970; P>0.005), M stage (HR: 0.880; P>0.005) were all factors affecting the prognosis of patients with prostate cancer. The average survival time of married patients was 16.05±10.32 months, and the average survival time of unmarried patients was 15.46±10.37 months. The average survival time of married patients was longer than that of unmarried patients (X2=1173.133; P<0.001), and the difference was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Based on big data analysis, marital status has a great influence on postoperative prostate cancer patients, and the survival time of married prostate cancer patients is longer than that of unmarried patients.

OBJECTIVE: Visceral venous aneurysms are very rare, especially in the kidney. The diagnosis of renal venous aneurysms is difficult. If complications such as thrombosis, embolism or rupture, there can be corresponding clinical symptoms. In severe cases, it can lead to the death of the patient. Endoscopic resection of renal venous aneurysms has not been reported in the literature. This paper preliminarily discusses the experience of laparoscopic resection of renal venous aneurysms. METHODS: Recently, a patient with left retroperitoneal space occupying lesion was admitted to our hospital. More than a year ago, the patient was found to have left retroperitoneal space occupying lesion by CT plain scan, accompanied by occasional upper abdominal and precordial discomfort at night. After admission, enhanced CT showed that the size of the space occupying lesion was about 3.0×2.0×2.0 cm, adjacent to the left abdominal aorta, left renal artery and left renal vein. The space occupying density was similar to that of renal parenchyma in the unenhanced phase, whereas the enhancement was less pronounced in the arterial phase, more pronounced in the venous phase, and the attenuation was less pronounced in the delayed phase. After further refining the preoperative preparation, the surgical approach was "transabdominal 3D laparoscopic left retroperitoneal space occupying resection". Intraoperatively, a space occupying was found at the angle between the abdominal aorta and renal pedicle vessels, which were dark red, soft in quality and had a heavy adhesion to the renal artery. An atraumatic vascular clip was used to block the left renal artery, the gap between the free renal artery and the space occupying, and then the renal artery noninvasive vascular clip was loosened. Continuing free space occupying, we found that the space occupying originated from the left renal vein, gradually enlarged, terminated at the psoas muscle, and connected with the renal vein approximately 1 cm in width. Closely apposed renal veins were blocked with a vascular clip, clipped, and finally a complete resection space was taken. RESULTS: The procedure was uneventful, without trauma to the surrounding tissue organs. After complete resection of retroperitoneal mass, the patient recovered well. No complications were found, and the discomfort symptoms disappeared. The pathological result was renal venous aneurysm, which was considered due to lumbar venous variation. CONCLUSION: No treatment modality for the endoscopic resection of renal venous aneurysms has been documented, and the previous treatment modalities were usually nephrectomy or intervention. This surgical procedure may be the first in the world and open a new way for the diagnosis and treatment of renal venous aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the role of intravenous lidocaine as a adjuvant anesthetics in patients undergoing gynecological surgery. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from PUMED/MELINE, EMBASE and clinic trails.gov involving the use of intravenous lidocaine in gynecological surgery. We used a more comprehensive search strategy to adequately screen for randomized controlled trials involving intravenous lidocaine infusion in gynecological surgery. First outcomes were postoperative pain scores. And secondary outcomes included 24 h postoperative opioids consumption, time to first flatus, and incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: A total of 6 RCTs comprising 375 patients were included in the meta-analysis. There were statistically significant between postoperative pain scores. The consumption of opioids and anesthetics during surgery and 24 hours after surgery was statistically significant when compared with the control group. Postoperative pain scores were similar at 2,4,6,8,10,12,24,48 hour between groups. No statistical differences were found in postoperative complications including nausea, vomiting and restoration of the intestinal function. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that the current literature supports the perioperative use of intravenous lidocaine as part of multimodal analgesia and beneficial to patients in early postoperative analgesia, reduced opioid consumption.

Harmful red tides in China have caused paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) pollution and led to severe socioeconomic effects in shellfish aquaculture. Although shellfish can survive harmful algal blooms, the effects on their Condition Index (CI) have been underestimated. This study sought to evaluate the effects of the profiles and levels of paralytic shellfish toxins on variations in the CI in bivalves under natural blooming conditions. We observed clear soft tissue lesions to varying degrees except in Mytilus galloprovincialis after toxin exposure. Among the five species of shellfish exposed in situ, only M. galloprovincialis accumulated PSTs content above the maximum permitted level (800 µg STX di-HCl eq./kg). The highest toxin content in all sample tissues was observed in Patinopecten yessoensis. Significant interspecies differences in PSTs accumulation among the five bivalve species were observed in the hepatopancreas. A total of nine PSTs components and four new C-11 hydroxyl metabolites (so-called M-toxins) toxins were detected, and detoxification diversity was observed among bivalves. We observed a higher proportion of M-toxin in early stages, and the proportions changed only slightly over time in M. galloprovincialis and Magallana gigas, thus accounting for the significantly higher metabolism rate. Notably, the CI in M. gigas and Argopecten irradians was positively correlated with lowest toxin accumulation of PSTs content, but significantly inhibited. In conclusion, our results revealed a significant inhibitory effect on the CI in shellfish, in a species specific manner, with distinct levels of inhibition correlated with different toxin metabolites. Our study revealed the toxin content of different bivalves exposed to a natural red tide environment and the consequent effects on growth, thus building a foundation for research on the mechanisms underlying the effects of PSTs on growth. These data establish the ecological and economic significance of the effects of harmful algal blooms on bivalves.

In the last 5 years, paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) have been recurrently detected in mollusks farmed in the mussel culture area of Qinhuangdao city, along with the occurrence of toxic outbreaks linked to dinoflagellate species of the Alexandrium genus. To understand the formation mechanism and variation of these events, continuous and comprehensive PSTs monitoring was carried out between 2017 and 2020. Through the analysis of both phytoplankton and cysts via light microscopy and quantitative polymerase chain reaction, it was shown that Alexandrium catenella was responsible for the production of PSTs, which consisted mainly of gonyautoxins 1,4 (GTX1/4, 87%) and GTX2/3 (13%). During bloom events in 2019, mussels accumulated the highest PSTs value (929 µg STX di-HCl eq·kg-1) in conjunction with the peak of cell abundances, and toxin profiles were consistent with high distributions of GTX1/4, GTX2/3, and Neosaxitoxin. Toxin metabolites vary in different substances and mainly transferred to a stable proportion of α-epimer: ß-epimers 3:1. The environmental drivers of Alexandrium blooms included the continuous rise of water temperature (>4 °C) and calm weather with low wind speed and no significant precipitation. By comparing toxin profiles and method sensitivity, it was found that dissolved toxins in seawater are more useful for early warning. These results have important implications for the effective monitoring and management of paralytic shellfish poisoning outbreaks.

Objective: This study aimed to summarize the effectiveness of rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) for the treatment of gait and motor function in Parkinson's disease (PD) through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: All studies were retrieved from eight databases. The effects of RAS on PD were determined using the following indicators: gait parameters including step length, stride width, step cadence, velocity, stride length; motor function including 6 min walk test (6MWT) and timed up-and-go test (TUGT); the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS); and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). The risk map of bias of the quality of the studies and the meta-analysis results of the indicators was prepared with RevMan 5.2 software. Results: Twenty-one studies were included in the systematic review, and 14 studies were included in the meta-analysis. In the meta-analysis, the results of gait parameters, namely, velocity, step length, and stride length, were statistically significant (P < 0.05), whereas the results of cadence and stride width were not statistically significant (P ≧ 0.05). The results of 6MWT and TUGT for motor function as well as UPDRS-II, UPDRS-III, and BBS were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusions: RAS could improve gait parameters, walking function, balance function, and daily living activities of individuals with PD. The application of RAS in conventional rehabilitation approaches can enhance motor performance in PD. Future studies should use a large sample size and a rigorous design to obtain strong conclusions about the advantages of RAS for the treatment of gait and motor function in PD.

There has been growing interest in water-processable conjugated polymers for biocompatible devices. However, some broadly used conjugated polymers like poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) are hydrophobic and they cannot be processed in water. We herein report a facile yet highly efficient assembly method to prepare water-dispersible pyridine-containing P3HT (Py-P3HT) nanoparticles (NPs) with a high yield (>80%) and a fine size below 100 nm. It is based on the fast nanoprecipitation of Py-P3HT stabilized by hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). Py-P3HT can form spherical NPs at a concentration up to 0.2 mg/mL with a diameter of ∼75 nm at a very low concentration of PAA, e.g., 0.01-0.1 mg/mL, as surface ligands. Those negatively charged Py-P3HT NPs can bind with metal cations and further support the growth of noble metal NPs like Ag and Au. Our self-assembly methodology potentially opens new doors to process and directly use hydrophobic conjugated polymers in a much broader context.

A new positioning algorithm based on RSS measurement is proposed. The algorithm adopts maximum likelihood estimation and semi-definite programming. The received signal strength model is transformed to a non-convex estimator for the positioning of the target using the maximum likelihood estimation. The non-convex estimator is then transformed into a convex estimator by semi-definite programming, and the global minimum of the target location estimation is obtained. This algorithm aims at the L0 known problem and then extends its application to the case of L0 unknown. The simulations and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better accuracy than the existing positioning algorithms.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a common subtype of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and causes many deaths. Numerous medical studies have suggested that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) exert their biological functions on ccRCC. Herein, functions of lncRNA SNHG16 in ccRCC cells and the mechanism mediated by SNHG16 were investigated. The expression levels of SNHG16 and its downstream genes in ccRCC cells and RCC tissues were examined utilizing reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses. Cell counting kit-8 and 5-Ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine assays were performed to evaluate the proliferation of ccRCC cells, and flow cytometry analyses were employed to determine the apoptosis of ccRCC cells. Western blot analysis was applied to examine protein levels associated with cell proliferation and apoptosis. The combination between SNHG16 and miRNA as well as miRNA and its target gene were explored by luciferase reporter, RNA pull down, and RNA immunoprecipitation assays. The significant upregulation of SNHG16 was observed in RCC tissues and ccRCC cells. SNHG16 downregulation inhibited the proliferation and promoted the apoptosis of ccRCC cells. In addition, SNHG16 served as a competing endogenous RNA for miR-1301-3p, and STARD9 was a target gene of miR-1301-3p in ccRCC cells. SNHG16 upregulated STARD9 expression by binding with miR-1301-3p in ccRCC cells. Rescue assays validated that SNHG16 promoted ccRCC cell promotion and induced ccRCC cell apoptosis by upregulating STARD9 expression. In conclusions, SNHG16 promotes ccRCC cell proliferation and suppresses ccRCC cell apoptosis via interaction with miR-1301-3p to upregulate STARD9 expression in ccRCC cells.

BACKGROUND: Catamenial pneumothorax is characterized by spontaneous recurring pneumothorax during menstruation, which is a common clinical manifestation of thoracic endometriosis syndrome. There are still controversies about its pathogenesis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old woman with a history of endometriosis came to our hospital due to recurring pneumothorax during menstruation. Uniportal Video-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) exploration was performed on the eve of menstruating. We thoroughly explored the diaphragm, visceral and parietal pleura: The lung surface was scattered with yellowish-brown implants; no bullae were found; multiple diaphragmatic defects were found on the dome. And surprisingly, we caught a fascinating phenomenon: Bubbles were slipping into pleural cavity through diaphragmatic defects. We excised the diaphragmatic lesions and wedge resected the right upper lung lesion; cleared the deposits and flushed the thoracic cavity with pure iodophor. Diaphragmatic lesions confirmed the presence of endometriosis, and interestingly enough, microscopically, endometrial cells were shedding with impending menses. After a series of intraoperative operations and postoperative endocrine therapy, the disease did not recur after a period of follow-up. CONCLUSION: We have witnessed the typical signs of catamenial pneumothorax at the accurate timing: Not only observed the process of gas migration macroscopically, but also obtained pathological evidence of diaphragmatic periodic perforation microscopically, which is especially precious and confirms the existing theory that retrograde menstruation leads to diaphragmatic endometriosis, and the diaphragmatic fenestration is obtained due to the periodic activities of ectopic endometrium.

The production of 1-butene by ethylene dimerization is an important chemical industrial process currently implemented using homogeneous catalysts. Here, we describe a highly active heterogeneous catalyst (Ni-ZIF-8) for ethylene dimerization, which consists of isolating Ni-active sites selectively located on the crystal surface of a zeolitic imidazolate framework. Ni-ZIF-8 can be easily prepared by a simple one-pot synthesis method in which site-specific anchoring of Ni is achieved spontaneously because of the incompatibility between the d8 electronic configuration of Ni2+ and the three-dimensional framework of ZIF-8. The full exposure and square-planar coordination of the Ni sites accounts for the high catalytic activity of Ni-ZIF-8. It exhibits an average ethylene turnover frequency greater than 1 000 000 h-1 (1-butene selectivity >85%) at 35 °C and 50 bar, far exceeding the activities of previously reported heterogeneous catalysts and many homogeneous catalysts under similar conditions. Moreover, compared to molecular Ni complexes used as homogeneous catalysts for ethylene dimerization, Ni-ZIF-8 has significantly higher stability and shows constant activity during 4 h of continuous reaction. Isotopic labeling experiments indicate that ethylene dimerization over Ni-ZIF-8 follows the Cossee-Arlman mechanism, and detailed characterizations combined with density functional theory calculations rationalize this observed high activity.
