RESUMO

The supplementation of Selenium-enriched probiotics is effective in reducing oxidative stress and maintaining meat quality stability in broiler chicken especially under heat stress. An experimental study was conducted to perform Comparative analysis of Selenium yeast with inorganic Se in broilers under heat stress. A total of 120 broilers chicks of one day were assigned to 4 groups each consisting 30 chicks fed on same basal diet but different selenium sources. The basal diet of group D1 was not supplemented with Se source (Negative control), group D2 basal diet was supplemented with inorganic selenium (Sodium selenite 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase), group D3 basal diet was supplemented with commercially available organic selenium (Seleno-methionine 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase) and group D4 basal diet was supplemented with self-developed organic selenium (Se-enriched yeast 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase). The performance parameters i.e. feed intake (FI), live body weight (BW) and FCR were not significantly (p>0.05) effected by selenium supplementation in the starter phase but were significantly (p<0.05) effected in the finisher phase. Selenium supplementation significantly (p<0.05) effected serum Se level in different supplemented groups. Higher serum Se value (58.20±0.06) was recorded in D4 group. Similarly significantly lower selenium value was recorded for D4 and higher was recorded for D1 (11.36±0.08). However lower serum Paraoxonase (PON) value was recorded for D4 (13.24±0.01) and higher for D1 (13.33±0.03). Comparatively self-developed Se enriched yeast increased the Se accumulation and improved antioxidant system. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) was found higher in D4 (12.333±0.03) followed by D3, D2 and D1 respectively. Whereas superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly lower (p<0.05) in D4 (0.1437±0.003) followed by D3 (0.1457±0.002). Selenium supplementation increased the [...].

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study is to assess the levels of Maresin 1 (MaR1) in patients with idiopathic acute anterior uveitis (IAAU) and to compare the MaR1 results with healthy controls. METHODS: This study includes 24 patients with idiopathic AAU and 24 healty controls (C). The serum MaR1 levels were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured at the time of diagnosis. RESULTS: MaR1 levels were statistically significant when the IAAU group was compared with group C (P<0.001). When idiopathic AAU patients were compared with group C, no statistically significant difference was found between ESR and CRP levels (P=0.086, P=0.549 respectively). CONCLUSION: Serum MaR1 levels are an important biomarker of disease in patients with idiopathic AAU.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is an eye disease of unknown etiology that presents with reduced visual acuity, choroidal thickening (distance between Bruch's membrane and the chorioscleral border), and subretinal fluid leakage. In the present study, the goal was to investigate the role of the interrelated tenascin C, metalloprotein-1, BAX, BCL2, subfatin and asprosin molecules in the pathogenesis of CSCR. METHOD: Thirty CSCR patients and 30 controls were included. CSCR was diagnosed by optical coherence tomography imaging. A 5mL blood sample was collected from all participants after overnight fasting. Compounds in the blood samples were studied with the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method. RESULTS: Patients with CSCR were found to have macular thickening (P: 0.08) and statistically significantly reduced visual acuity (P: 0.034) compared to controls. With regard to serum parameters, there were statistically significant increases in tenascin C, metalloprotein-1, BAX, BCL2, subfatin and asprosin levels compared to controls. We found a positive correlation between macular thickness and tenascin C (r+0.670, P<0.001), metaloprotein-1 (r+0.714, P<0.001), BAX, BCL2 (r+0.771, P<0.001), subfatin and asprosin levels and a negative correlation between visual acuity and tenascin C (r+0.605 P<0.001), metaloprotein-1 (r+0.704, P<0.001), BAX, BCL2 (r+0.738, P<0.001), subfatin and asprosin levels. CONCLUSION: The molecules studied herein were negatively correlated with visual acuity and positively correlated with macular thickness, suggesting that these molecules might have a role in the pathogenesis of CSCR. Thus, we predict that these molecules could be new candidates for the diagnosis and follow-up of CSCR in the future.

RESUMO

Recent changes in climate have reduced crop productivity throughout much of the world. Drought and heat stress, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, have seriously affected barley production. This study explored the separate and interactive effects of silicon (Si) and hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) on plant growth and mitigation of the adverse effects of heat stress (DS) and drought stress (HS) in a barley pot experiment. The impacts of simultaneous DS + HS were more severe than individual stresses due to increased ROS production, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and higher electrolyte leakage (EL), thereby leading to reduced water, protein and photosynthetic pigment content. Exogenously applied Si and H2 S alleviated the DS-, HS- and DS + HS-induced effects on barley by reducing ROS production, MDA and EL. A single application of H2 S or Si + H2 S increased plant biomass under all stress conditions, which can be ascribed to higher Si accumulation in barley shoots. A single application of Si or H2 S significantly increased plant biomass. However, Si + H2 S was the most effective treatment for metabolite accumulation and elevating activity of antioxidant enzymes to prevent toxicity from oxidative stress. This treatment also modulated osmolyte content, enhanced antioxidant activity and regulated the stress signalling-related endogenous hormones, abscisic acid (ABA) and indole acetic acid (IAA). Exogenous treatments regulated endogenous H2 S and Si and resulted in higher tolerance to individual and combined drought and heat stress in barley.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate plasma dopamine and catecholamine levels in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 32 patients with acute CSCR were included, along with 32 age- and gender-matched healthy controls without CSCR. Complete ophthalmologic examinations were performed. Plasma dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine levels were measured in the morning after 8-12hours of fasting. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: While the mean age of the CSCR group was 40.12±7.96 years, the mean age of the control group was 37.81±7.26 years. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of age or gender (P=0.229, P=0.740, respectively). The plasma dopamine level was 29.85±9.39pg/ml in the CSCR group and 23.93±7.33pg/ml in the control group (P=0.001). The plasma epinephrine level was 60.73±25.69pg/ml in the CSCR group and 45.77±18.55pg/ml in the control group (P=0.021). The plasma norepinephrine level was 206.68±71.51pg/ml in the CSCR group and 149.33±49.69pg/ml in the control group (P=0.001). Plasma dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine levels were statistically significantly higher in the CSCR group. CONCLUSION: We concluded that dopamine may be a possible factor in the etiology of CSCR, both through its receptors and by enhancing sympathetic activity.

RESUMO

Mathematical modeling of mechanical system in microfluidics is an emerging area of interest in microscale engineering. Since microfluidic devices use the hair-like structure of artificial cilia for pumping, mixing, and sensing in different fields, electro-osmotic cilia-driven flow helps to generate the fluid velocity for the Newtonian and viscoelastic fluid. Due to the deployment of artificial ciliated walls, the present research reports the combined effect of an electro-osmotic flow and convective heat transfer on Jeffrey viscoelastic electrolytic fluid flow in a two-dimensional ciliated vertical channel. Heat generation/absorption and nonlinear radiation effects are included in the present mathematical model. After applying Debye-Huckel approximation and small Reynolds number approximation to momentum and energy equation, the system of nonlinear partial differential equation is reduced into nonhomogenous boundary value problem. The problem determines the velocity, pressure, and temperature profiles by the application of semi-analytical technique known as homotopy perturbation method (HPM) with the help of software Mathematica. The graphical results of the study suggest that HPM is a reliable methodology for thermo physical electro-osmotic rheological transport in microchannels.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate levels of plasma cerebellin, cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included 30 patients diagnosed with acute CSC (Group 1) and a control group of 30 age-matched, healthy subjects without CSC (Group 2). Levels of plasma cerebellin, cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline were examined in blood samples taken after 8-12hours of fasting. A value of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant in the comparative analyses. RESULTS: The mean plasma cerebellin level was found to be 232.56±113.28 pg/ml in Group 1 and 174.07±82.04 pg/ml in Group 2 (p=0.02). Mean plasma cortisol was 13.19±3.87µg/ml in Group 1 and 9.55±2.92µg/ml in Group 2 (p<0.01). Mean plasma adrenaline was 60.62±26.67 pg/ml in Group 1 and 46.17±19.20 pg/ml in Group 2 (p=0.03). Mean plasma noradrenaline was 206.66±73.90 pg/ml in Group 1 and 149.96±51.36 pg/ml in Group 2 (p<0.01). CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that increased cerebellin may have a role in the etiology of CSC by increasing catecholamine expression from the adrenal medulla and indirectly by increasing cortisol levels via a paracrine effect from the adrenal cortex.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Barbed pharyngoplasty aims to reduce lateral retropalatal obstruction by pulling up the soft palate anterolaterally. However, barbed pharyngoplasty can be less efficient in some cases of obstructive sleep apnoea, especially in the presence of an elongated uvula with redundant tissues over it. This paper describes an attempt to overcome this drawback by modifying barbed pharyngoplasty, using a single continuous suture technique. METHODS: Thirty-four patients were assigned to two groups based on the surgical procedure performed. Those with an elongated uvula were treated with modified barbed pharyngoplasty (n = 17); the others were treated with barbed pharyngoplasty (n = 17). Pre- and post-operative quality of life questionnaires, and questionnaires concerning diet, pain and return to activity, were completed. Pre- and post-operative polysomnography was performed as an objective measurement. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between barbed pharyngoplasty and modified barbed pharyngoplasty in terms of outcomes. However, reductions in the apnoea/hypopnea index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and snoring visual analogue scale scores were greater in the modified barbed pharyngoplasty group. CONCLUSION: Modified barbed pharyngoplasty is a safe and feasible method, and eliminates the need for surgical resection of the redundant soft tissues around the uvula while lifting up the uvula base.

METHODS: Prospectively, 110 consecutive patients with a suspicious laryngeal lesion were evaluated for serum levels of T-helper 17 cell related interleukins, including interleukins 23, 17A and 22, determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The patients were divided into 2 groups after pathological evaluation: 49 patients with malignancy and 61 with benign pathology. Associations between interleukin levels and malignancy were determined via correlation analyses. RESULTS: Interleukin 17A and 22 levels were significantly higher in the malignancy group than the benign lesion group. Pearson correlation analysis showed that interleukins 17A and 22 acted in a cascade, but interleukin 23 did not. According to predictive values, interleukin 17A levels were 3.87 times and interleukin 22 levels were 1.09 times more likely to be associated with laryngeal cancer. The cut-off values for predicting laryngeal cancer were 3.55 pg/ml for interleukin 17A and 119.82 pg/ml for interleukin 22. CONCLUSION: T-helper 17 cell related interleukins are potential biomarkers that may be helpful in diagnosing laryngeal cancer. Moreover, these data may support neutralisation of T-helper 17 cell related cytokine activity, which could be an attractive strategy for treating laryngeal cancer.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Clinical handover is defined as inter-clinician communication occurring at care interfaces. In this study, we analyse the clinical outcomes and physician attitudes associated with the implementation of a electronic clinical handover system in our medical department. AIM: The aim of this project was to introduce a reliable, standardised, reproducible method of communicating information regarding inpatients within our medical department. We also sought to assess the attitudes of physicians within our department to medical handover. METHODS: We designed and implemented an electronic handover template with a protocol to guide staff as to its use. Handover was audited weekly. In addition, we surveyed attitudes of doctors to handover before and after our handover pilot. RESULTS: An average of 32 patients were handed over each week. Compliance with mandatory handover of ICU/CCU patients averaged at 59%. Extrapolating our pilot results for the year would result in approximately 1655 handover events per annum in our department. One hundred percent of physicians surveyed felt that documentation of handover was beneficial, and staff satisfaction with handover improved after initiation of the pilot (81 vs 24%, p = 0.000914). While 64% of staff were concerned that typed electronic handover would increase their workload, only 6% of the post pilot survey group felt that it did increase workload significantly. CONCLUSION: Electronic clinical handover is feasible and practical within the Irish healthcare system. In addition, it was found in our study to be attractive and effective to physicians without increasing their workload.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Bell's palsy and a novel oxidative stress parameter, thiol/disulphide homeostasis. DESIGN: A prospective study evaluating oxidative stress in Bell's palsy. SETTING: This research took place in the department of Otorhinolaryngology, Ataturk Training and Research Hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Totally, 77 patients with Bell's palsy and 38 healthy controls were included in this study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The blood levels of total and native thiol and disulphide activity were assessed, and their levels were compared in the patients and controls. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between the patients and controls regarding thiol/disulphide parameters. The mean native thiol and total thiol were significantly lower and disulphide levels were higher in the Bell's palsy than controls. On binary logistic regression analysis, the created model showed 45.3% variation. The cut-off value was 18.95 for disulphides. CONCLUSION: Native and total thiol levels were low in the Bell's palsy. This metabolic disturbance may have a role in the pathogenesis of Bell's palsy.

RESUMO

Topographic relationship; sinusitis and paranasal sinus computed tomography. BACKGROUND: The association between the symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and computed tomography (CT) findings is controversial, especially the topography of the symptoms and CT findings. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between topographic and overall paranasal CT findings with topographic and overall symptoms. METHODS: This was a two-center study comprising 166 patients diagnosed with chronic sinusitis. All patients underwent CT scans and completed a questionnaire. The symptom scores and CT findings were compared. RESULTS: A correlation between anterior ethmoid sinusitis and hyposmia was found. Blockage of the osteomeatal complex and posterior ethmoid sinusitis was associated with halitosis. There were also correlations between maxillary and sphenoid sinusitis and tooth pain. The total visual scale score was not associated with any of the symptoms. No association was seen between facial pain or facial pressure and paranasal sinus CT scores. No correlation was found between the topographic correlation of sinus pain and topographic paranasal sinus CT findings. CONCLUSIONS: No relationship exists between symptoms and paranasal sinus CT findings in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether there was any relationship between tinnitus and mean platelet volume. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted between January 2013 and January 2014 in Ankara Atatürk Hospital and Ondokuz Mayis University Hospital, Turkey, on a study group of 86 patients with tinnitus and a control group of 84 healthy subjects. Mean platelet volume was recorded and comparisons were made between the two groups. RESULTS: Mean (± standard deviation) platelet volume was 7.67 ± 0.83 µm(3) in the study group and 7.28 ± 0.56 µm(3) in the control group. There was a statistically significant difference in mean platelet volume between the tinnitus patients and the healthy subjects (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The clinical findings indicated that tinnitus patients had a higher mean platelet volume than the healthy control subjects; however, the pathophysiological mechanism remains unclear.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that insulin-like growth factor-2 (IGF-2) levels are altered in skin injury; there are no data evaluating the serum concentration and skin tissue expression of IGF-2 in canine generalized demodicosis. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To assess serum concentrations of IGF-2 collected from dogs with generalized demodicosis compared to healthy dogs and to determine the location of IGF-2 in the skin of affected dogs. METHODS: Blood and skin samples were collected from 12 dogs of differing breeds and gender at 1-2 years of age that had a confirmed diagnosis of generalized demodicosis. Age-matched control skin and blood samples were collected from 11 normal dogs of different breeds and gender. Serum IGF-2 concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Skin tissue expression of IGF-2 was analysed by immunohistochemical methods. RESULTS: Serum concentration and skin tissue expression of IGF-2 were increased in dogs with generalized demodicosis compared with control dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: These findings indicate that keratinocytes, histiocytes and fibrocytes in the dermis are positive for IGF-2; they may be a source of the elevated serum IGF-2 levels in dogs with generalized demodicosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Trimetazidine (TMZ) has been used to protect against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of many tissues. We aimed to evaluate the effect of TMZ during retinal I/R in a guinea pig model. STUDY DESIGN/PATIENTS AND METHODS: An experimental study in retinal I/R. Three groups of five guinea pigs were studied to include a control, placebo, and drug test groups. Prior to the application of 90 minutes of high intraocular pressure (IOP) to induce retinal ischemia followed by 24 hours of reperfusion, we applied intraperitoneal saline to the placebo group and 3 mg/kg of TMZ for the drug test group and repeated the injections at intervals of six hours for four cycles. Both eyes of the animals were enucleated at the end of the reperfusion period. Biochemical assay and histopathologic evaluation was performed on one randomly selected eye of each animal. The level of retinal-free malondialdehyde (MDA) and retinal layer thicknesses were determined and comparisons were then made with the control group. RESULTS: The mean free MDA level increased in the placebo group (P = 0.006) but not in the drug group (P > 0.05). We observed polymorphonucleated leukocyte infiltration, retinal edema and hydropic degeneration in the retina of the placebo group. However, significant histopathologic change was not observed in specimens of the drug group. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests TMZ has a beneficial effect on retinal lipid peroxidation and histopathologic changes due to I/R injury.

RESUMO

Since prior studies of individuals' perceptions of career-choice factors have not considered the effect of cognitive styles of subjects, this study, using 68 accounting students, investigated the mediating effects of the field dependent-independent cognitive dimension on perceptions of the importance of career-choice factors. The results, in general, show that cognitive style affected individuals' perceptions of career-choice factors, suggesting that future studies of individuals' perceptions should take into account individual cognitive differences.
